New restrictions on Russians travelling to Finland as well as through Finland to the Schengen countries come into effect from Monday 10 July.

The updated measures will apply, for example, to Russians on business trips — who will only be allowed to enter Finland in the future, and not use Finland as a transit hub to travel onwards to other countries.

Additionally, students coming from Russia will only be granted entry to Finland if they are enrolled in a degree programme or are participating in studies that are part of a degree.

The updated restrictions will also apply to Russian citizens who own property in Finland, as they will be required to provide a basis for their entry into the country.

The changes were drafted by the President and Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy (TP-UTVA), which concluded last month that "travel by Russian citizens may still be harmful to Finland’s international relations".

The committee also decided that current restrictions on non-essential travel by Russian citizens should continue.

Finland began significantly limiting the issuing of visas to Russian citizens last September in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Conscripts' evening snack offerings get a makeover

Conscripts in the Finnish army can look forward to protein puddings and smoothies for their evening snacks in July, following requests to offer more varied food to the recruits.

Prior to the revamp, an increasing number of conscripts were skipping their evening meal, according to Leijona Catering, the company responsible for the conscripts' meals.

The firm runs frequent surveys to gauge the conscripts' opinions on the food on offer, and the most recent results revealed an increasing demand for a more varied evening meal.

"We are concerned about the well-being and operational capacity of conscripts, and they eagerly joined in the development of the evening meal," explained Anna-Mari Malkamäki, coordinator of the evening meal project.

"Protein is a word that always comes up in our surveys. Additionally, pastries such as buns, berry pies, and brownies received mentions," Malkamäki said. "There was also a desire for savoury fast food items on the evening meal plate, such as pizza and various Mexican dishes."

More protein and a special meal once a week

Following the survey, the conscripts will be offered a healthier, tastier evening meal based on their preferences. New additions to the table include different types of bread, such as baguettes, which can be filled with various toppings like cold cuts and fresh vegetables.

Attention was also given to the variety of fruits and protein sources.

"We have added more quark, yogurts, and puddings to the selection. Some of the product recipes have been revamped, incorporating whey protein powder to provide additional protein. The chocolate protein pudding has been particularly well-received," Malkamäki said.

Well-known Finnish delicacies such as Karelian pies and egg butter will remain on the menu.

Once a week, conscripts are served a special evening meal, something a little different from the norm.

"It will be either a meat pie or a burger with fresh sides," Malkamäki revealed.

Finnish Conscripts' Union chair Elina Riutta said the revamp seems promising.

"We consistently receive feedback about inadequate nutrition offerings. With physical exercise, one needs substantial energy to keep going," Riutta emphasised.

According to the Finnish government, the issue was also discussed by the government's foreign and security policy ministerial committee (TP-UTVA).
