Week 1 - About Me

Hello!

My name is Yuchen Lin, you can also call me Harry as my English name, I’m an international student from China and I’m currently a Junior at UWM. My major is Computer Science and I’m working on Campas at this moment. I also help my family members with their own eCommerce business which is being an Amazon seller.

The reason for taking this course is this course is a part of my requirement to be able to graduate. But on the other hand, I chose this course is also because I think learning about design will be helpful for my future career. I want to be a game programmer, it is my responsibility to catch players’ attention and let them be willing to play the game I created. Therefore, the knowledge of designing became more important. While I was helping my family member out, we also need to figure out what kind of products can bring us substantial profit, sometimes, there are sellers who are already selling the products we want to try out so we have to make some differences to be able to make our products stand out more. From time to time, I figured that it was very hard for me to jump out of the box and think differently to make our products better due to my lack of knowledge of designing. When I first started to work with my family member, we found out that people are selling Whisky ice balls that were stored in a fancy little box and they were selling a good amount every day especially during Christmas, etc. So we figured that we can probably make some changes to the product and try to join the market. I advised that changing the color of the little box may be helpful, but after discussing with my family member, he pointed out that the shape of the ice ball can also be changed, or even put more items in the box to make it more valuable to the customers. I could see the differences between me and my family member, he has more experience and knowledge of designing to fit in the markets better with any products. In my opinion, design can be equally important in any field, not only Arts.

I’m very excited about this course, I hope that we can have a great semester together!

#5WomenArtists: Susan Stuart Goodrich Frackelton

For Women’s History Month, UW-Milwaukee’s Distinctive Collections are joining the 5 Women Artists challenge. Be sure to check out @agslibrary & @uwmspeccoll for their contributions.

Today we are featuring the Wisconisn artist Susan Stuart Goodrich Frackelton or Mrs. S. S. Frackelton. Born in Milwaukee, Susan Goodrich became a leader of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United States. She taught the art and technique of painting ceramics and china to women from her studio in downtown Milwaukee. The classes offered women the opportunity to develop their talents and marketable skills to make a profitable living of their own.

She was President of the National League of Mineral Painters, organized the Milwaukee Artist’s Association in 1887, authored the book “Tried by Fire” in 1885 and received patents for her development of a home gas kiln in 1886 and 1888. Frackelton also earned nine medals at the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition.

You can learn more about Susan Stuart Goodrich Frackelton (1848-1932) on the Museum of Wisconsin Art website. Her collection of papers is fully digitized and can be accessed through the Wisconsin Historical Society. The UWM Archives holds the physical copies of her papers. (Milw SC 23)

Week #1 Journal one

My name is Jason Christensen im a sophomore at UWM going for a DVC major I was born and raised in Cedarburg Wi, 20 mins north of Milwaukee but I would say I am local. I am taking this class because it is required but also I appreciate all inputs of design. This semester I am living at my apartment off campus being one of my classes is f2f but I am still eager to learn in person or online. 

The reason I am an art major is that when I was 15-16 I started applying myself to the arts community locally by getting a co-op studio in the Marshal building and participating in their Gallery nights in the third ward. After selling small pieces and doing private commissions I came to the conclusion this is where I want my life to go. Most recently I was in two shows one with “ Frank Juarez” and another at the “ Grafton Arts Mill” for painting I did over summer. While I am a graphic design major my media is mainly Spray paint and acrylic.

I come from a background of artist my mother is an abstract painter who graduated from MIAD and my brother Is an Art Director/ Printmaker after graduating MIAD. I now volunteer and work with “ The Grafton Arts Mill” and “NSAA” which are non profit art associations. Basically I have beeb raised in the art community and would love to only see that opportunity expand.

Service Learning Entry 1 (1/29/2020)

My name is Jordan Henningfield and I am a junior studying Communication Design at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. This semester, I am taking a Service learning class about Material Culture and Sustainability. For this class, I have to complete a total of 35 service hours at a non-profit organization somewhere in my community.  

For my service, I have been considering working with organizations that provide aid, services, and information to women or to people within the LGBT community. More specifically, I have been looking into working with Planned Parenthood or the MKE LGBT Community Center. Both of these organizations hold values and morals that I share, and I think it would be rewarding to be able to give back to these communities by offering my time and help through volunteering. Some other options I have been considering would be with the Milwaukee Public Library or with a UWM Greenhouse doing research or organizing information.

Service learning and volunteering have been things that I grew up doing at my school and my church when I was younger. It’s something that I haven’t done on my own time for quite awhile, but it had always been a positive experience whenever I had done it in the past. I think everyone should have the opportunity to volunteer their time within their community at least once, because there is so much that you might be able to learn from the people around you and from knowing that the work you are doing is for a cause greater than yourself.

Processing Growing Power

A new collection will soon be added to the UWM Archives—the Growing Power Records. Growing Power was established in 1998 as a Milwaukee-based, national not-for-profit organization with the goal of supporting the development of healthy community food systems. The Growing Power Records cover the establishment of Will’s Roadside Farm Market in 1993 through Growing Power’s closure in 2017. During Growing Power’s run, the founder and CEO, Will Allen, received numerous awards and speaking engagements, in addition to publishing his book The Good Food Revolution in 2012.

Like all archival collections, before the Growing Power Records could be made available for use by the public, it underwent processing. According to the Society of American Archivists (SAA), processing is “[t]he arrangement, description, and housing of archival materials for storage and use by patrons.” This also involves determining what to keep and what to discard.  

The processing of the Growing Power Records is occurring in two rounds. In the first round, the contents were browsed for more obvious records to discard, like duplicates. In the second round, the contents are undergoing a more thorough examination, which includes decisions about the arrangement and labeling of folders. The selected contents are then being transferred into new folders and boxes. Once these decisions are finalized, the description of the collection, which includes its arrangement and contents list, will be entered into a finding aid to be published online. With this, the collection will be available for public use.

Huobi Study Club: 90% of Fidelity's top clients are asking about Bitcoin

Huobi Observation

In an interview with the Boston Globe on 16 August, Christine Sandle, head of sales and marketing at asset management giant Fidelity, said that 90% of Fidelity's top clients were asking about Bitcoin.

This comes after Fidelity Digital Assets filed a bitcoin trust application with the U.S. SEC in March.

Fidelity has been mining Bitcoin since 2015 and relies "primarily on Canadian hydroelectricity" and other renewable energy sources for its operations. The size of Fidelity's Bitcoin mining operation is currently unknown, but it is said to be small and highly profitable.

According to the Huobi Study Club, Fidelity's performance suggests that a large amount of private wealth from the wealthy is pouring into the cryptocurrency market. A previous Goldman Sachs survey of its family office clients found that a number of them were looking to add cryptocurrencies to their portfolios. Many families believe that this technology could bring the same impact as the internet from an efficiency and productivity perspective.

Unlike the regulation of hedge funds, family offices manage the net assets of individuals or family and friends, they are not under any obligation to disclose their own holdings. There is also an incentive for wealthy people to invest in cryptocurrencies in terms of the privacy of their personal assets.

The qualities like wealth effects, growth prospects, and property privacy protection that the cryptocurrency market presents are alluring to the wealthy. The fact that a large number of wealthy people are now taking an interest in the cryptocurrency market is certainly a long-term positive factor, and this trend is spreading.

BTC is Showing a smaller oscillation during the day, with strong support in 45,000.

According to data from Huobi Global, BTC is currently fluctuating at a low level, with strong support near 45,000. Looking at the four-hour level, the candlestick line is located below EMA5, EMA10, and EMA20 on a daily basis, and the three EMAs all show a downward trend. The K-line runs near the lower rail of the Bollinger Band during the day, and is located above the lower rail in the afternoon. The opening of the Bollinger Band expands slightly. The trading volume is relatively sluggish. DIF is always below DEA during the day, and both are negative. CCI is located below the -100 line and has a trend of upward wear. In terms of daily level, the current k-line is a short Yinxian, and there is a downward trend overall, or it will enter the downward space.

According to data from Huobi Global, ETH went down in the day, and the lowest price in the day was 2950USDT, where there is strong support.
