Finding Aid Friday: Jim Cohn Papers

On this #FindingAidFriday, we are highlighting the recently processed papers of Jim Cohn, poet, writer, recording artist, editor, publisher, and curator of the online Museum of American Poetics. The Jim Cohn Papers (1953-2019) were donated in 2019 and encompass approximately fifteen linear feet of material documenting Cohn’s work across his several vocations through correspondence, research files and drafts, interviews by and of Cohn, published essays and poetry, journals, photographs, and audiovisual materials.

We're getting ever closer to having the Husni Collection ready for researchers. Haley, Mariah, and Clare, our superhero team of Husni processers, recently passed an amazing milestone - 100,000 magazines rough sorted, checked against finding aids, and re-boxed. Newly Processed!

We’ve just finished processing the records of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Wellesley Hills. Totaling 87 boxes, the collection includes general church records, scrapbooks, photographs, and the records of previous ministers of the congregation.

Among some of the ministers who served at Wellesley Hills are Waitstill Sharp, who helped save thousands of Jewish children and intellectuals in Europe during the Nazi regime, and William Rice, who brokered the Unitarian Universalist merger and co-founded Human Relations Service, Inc., the first community mental health agency in the US.

Another archival processing project is underway: the George J. Stigler Papers. The Stigler papers arrived on campus in our repository in the mid-1990’s. The gathering of materials was led by his son Stephen Stigler and longtime research associate Claire Friedland, assembled from his apartment and office spaces at the University. Since that time the papers have been open for research and have received some use from a variety of scholars and researchers. With the current project we seek to further open the papers to a wider public, increasing accessibility, discoverability, and usability. As the work proceeds, we will reveal more on the interesting findings and related information preserved in the collection.

Once more I got to do Dragosteel's holiday card, and what a pleasure it was to do that one. This year the theme was awkward family foto and Christmas sweaters, or at least spren sweaters? 

Do you have a favourite?

People have been asking where the favourite Kholin son is, and yes originally Kaladin was in there, but then got booted out to be replaced by Gallant. (Seems like nobody signed any adoption papers so far…)

But I made some art with him, Shallan and Adolin to restore balance. And so I could design Adolin’s sweater details, because how can it be a fashion oriented card and then NOT show his choice for it?! It has swords and horses (Sureblood is in the back), of course!

And yes, ever since I was asked to include that chull plushy in that card, I knew I had to get one at Nexus. They are adorable. So round. His name is Chubby. Chubby the chull. TSA find them suspicious.

Lena losing her patience and furiously berating Gwen for potentially endangering the staff members of the OAIR is quite literally the opposite of how Elias ran the Archives.

Elias used the Archival staff—as well as his Archivist—as pawns that can be readily replaced as needed. His patron offered them minimal protections at best (the Archivist’s privileges notwithstanding), and even then, he would never actually intervene to save any of them if they were in danger, much less take precautions to protect them at their headquarters. They are used as bait, as sacrifices, as currency, as objects. The listener knows, eventually, how easily he could discard them if his plans called for it.

But Lena. This episode showed us that Lena keeps her entire organization running through keeping her subordinates hidden, safe, and unnoticed by the Externals. It’s quite clear through her conversation with Gwen that such a safety risk has never happened before.

As far as we know, Lena has successfully kept all of her employees alive, watched them come and go, bemoaned the turnover rate, and then got them to look the other way while they documented and dutifully filed the horrors.

But most impressive of all, she’s kept her real work hidden from her subordinates, and her subordinates hidden from her real work—a feat Elias had no interest or desire to accomplish.

Prolific animator Yoshihiko Umakoshi (馬越嘉彦) is best known for his work in shonen anime like My Hero Academia, however he also worked on several episodes of Kunihiko Ikuhara's 2011 Mawaru Penguindrum. During this time, he gave us this Revolutionary Girl Utena piece, itself a bonus purchase privilege poster at Mandarake stores for the purchase of Monthly Anime Style (月刊アニメスタイル) magazine, Vol 5.

It was first published as the full-color feature of the Hardcore of Utena's Supplement booklet in 2013. The Hardcore of Utena is a massive, two volume artbook released at Comiket 84, where you could receive this booklet with the purchase of the larger volumes. Mostly miscellaneous sketch art that features elsewhere, I nevertheless had it scanned already and felt like, hell, let's just finish it and get up there for you! So here are the scans of the 44 page booklet, or if you want the even larger versions, or a download of the lot, I also uploaded it to the Internet Archive! That's gonna be a pattern, y'all. ;)
