alias: V birth name: Verona X (gave up her surname when she left home and no longer remembers it) date of birth: september 13, 2050 affiliations: none the lore: feared merc assassin V doesn't have enemies; she has people she wants dead, and then they die. [tbc] the truth: the child of two neglectful night city junkies, verona was on her own from the moment she was born. leaving home at eleven and forced to become a pickpocket to survive, she was hardened early to the cruelty of corps and capitalism. for over ten years, V lived on the streets, before realizing that the city was going to swallow her if she didn't set her sights a little higher. so against her better judgement, she took a revenge job, robbing a maelstrom new recruit named rowen bane. she was caught, but rather than ratting her out, rowen was impressed and took a liking to her. they began a volatile and opportunistic relationship; he passed her name on to his superiors, and verona was contracted out for covert jobs when they needed her. but eventually maelstrom's leader, brick, contacted the thief and demanded she join the gang under threat of violence. in response, verona threatened to release maelstrom secrets; this was the wrong move, and brick made an attempt on her life. deciding NC was too dangerous for her to stay, verona broke for atlanta. altanta was more of the same, and didn't feel like home the way night city did. so verona returned, thinking two years was enough time for maelstrom to have forgotten about her. even so, she took on the alias "V" as a means of protection. while doing a botched thievery gig, V met ex-valentino jackie welles and became his best friend, part of his family, even. they began doing small-time merc jobs, trying to make a name for themselves, before being contacted by one dexter deshawn, a fixer running from a past of his own. the arasaka heist dex planned was a bust; V not only lost her best friend, but gained a brain-overwriting engram – who also happened to be the rockerboy that blew arasaka tower to the ground, none other than johnny silverhand. though their start was rocky, v and johnny quickly came to an understanding, finding closeness and compassion for each other as their personalities melded. eventually, they admitted they'd both die for each other, and that their unique bond was closer to love than either of them had felt before. V fought tooth and nail to save them both, forming alliances along the way that proved both her talent and tact. she went on to find a solution in arasaka's mikoshi, but while moving through the tower discovered johnny's body, intact and perfectly preserved. she eliminated yorinobu arasaka, made a deal with his sister, hanako, and won freedom for both herself and johnny. V is retired now, passing jobs on to her apprentice and adopted little brother, osiris, and dodging calls to take over the afterlife from rogue. you can find her living with johnny and their klepped dalmatian, sam, in a bungalow above the flooded remains of laguna bend.

just wanna yap about a small detail ( as usual ) :

a VESSEL is a host which already has a pre-existing soul ; a “CASK” ( or “casket” , if you want to be funny with it ) is a pseudo-vessel , transmuted from flesh , blood and bone that lacks a pre-existing soul to make it living and/or sentient and functional.

now , in-canon , it’s not novel that certain sorcerers create thralls or puppets. however , the idea of making one of ACTUAL ORGANIC MATTER and depositing a soul within … is. at least , it WAS back when it was first introduced to society in the 1500s by the Valhyrs. already a clan known for their questionable craft , people were even more appalled when they began experimenting with certain aspects of their own abilities. namely , why use a corpse when it’s already necrotic ? why not remake the body and simply grant the soul a new body ? why not perhaps go so far as to fundamentally remake a soul ?

the issue with this is that souls are notably fickle. getting it to bind to anything BEYOND its natural host was always tricky for most sorcerers ( even those with experience ) ; it took extreme care and the rite proved immensely tasking , one wrong move and the soul would be shattered. eventually , though , the process was streamlined and became easier for the Valhyrs. and although only the MATRIARCH of the clan practiced it , this of course meant verona eventually practiced it as well ( if only sparingly ) .

which means , you guessed it , verona was the one kaëltyr entrusted with transmuting ( & thus maintaining ) its current human cask and performing the rite to bind its soul to the cask. now , we could say it was STRICTLY PROFESSIONAL , but you and i both know there is something DEEPLY INTIMATE about entrusting an inordinately lethal sorceress to extricate your soul , handle it , and replace it into another form.

Wellspring greets him with shuttered windows and whispers. The living souls that still wander the streets do not look at him. They hunch their shoulders, murmur excuses under their breaths and scurry away from daylight behind slide-click-shut locks. She does not come to him, so Vash surmises she is not here. Not amongst the people, not at Claudius’s bar. 

There are no answers here for him, and so, Vash casts his gaze upwards to the shadow of the manor that overlooks the town.

The short trek to the manor’s primary entrance is filled with a gnawing anxiety.

Shadows seem taller, ominous, and the intricate spires of welded spacefaring alloys are silent as he approaches the front door. His fingers catch against the brass handle, and Vash steps past the threshold unimpeded. 

Inside, the manor is curiously still and quiet, devoid of staff, but not devoid of signs of life. His heart races in the cage of his ribs as he sweeps through the hallways in a flash of red. There, there, he senses them. Verona, and…

“Knives,” Vash breathes, and dread clings to him like hands clasped around his throat as he stands between the open doors with a blanched aspect. Knives and Verona are perched on their seat cushions, carrying on a conversation no more pressing than passing the time while they wait for afternoon tea. 

Waiting for him, almost.

He does not know how long his brother has been here. This outcome had always been a possibility, an inevitability, but so soon– he thought he would have more time, time to prepare, to head Knives off at the pass, anything. Time escaped him. 

“...Verona.” His greeting is tight, and Vash slowly passes into the parlor like a skittish tomas. “I see you’ve acquainted yourselves.”

“Now where have I heard that before?” Selena asks, laughing as she playfully dabs a touch of flour on the Valkyrie's nose. While she had not been smiling moments before, the keybearer is smiling now and her silver eyes twinkling at her beloved. 

Selena had removed her prosthetic so she could avoid getting the flour stuck between the joints and the task of cleaning it later. However, she has found that it’s difficult to knead the dough with only one hand and arm, and the keybearer may have gotten frustrated with the task.

“Can you take over for a minute, please, dear?” She asks, giving Verona a quick kiss on the nose, “I'm going to go find my arm.” If Selena recalled correctly, she had taken it off and left it either on the nightstand or by their reading nook.

Surprise alters && shifts to that of warmth. Delight interweaves itself through the makings of her expression && arms encircle knees to draw them nearer to her chest. Her crown pivots to && fro. She declines the assumption that aught might be amiss for fellow being of the insurmountable force. "No, no. Sometimes I just like to be in the quiet-- like a reset button, I guess. I'm fine though, really." There's an invitation to be given, though, in the way her palm shuffles against the spot at her side. The smile that pairs with this motion is nothing short of wondrous && true. A genuine inclination of emotion that seems so fleeting these days when battles waged would sooner see her taken away to distant realms && casting her lot in the wars of man. "Sit with me? I never really tire of your company as is, dear sister."
