Playing MGSV for the First Time Knowing the Twist, Part 0: Ground Zeroes

I’m a big Metal Gear fan but I dropped out sometime after MGS4. I’ve recently begun playing MGSV but I already know the twist about a certain character’s true identity. Still, the rest of the game is new to me and I’m ready to let Hideo Kojima break down my perceptual reality and teach me war is hell all over again. I’ll be chronicling my takes on the game as I go through it, starting with this post.

MISSION START

It’s been a while since I’ve done some tactical espionage action, so I died a bunch playing even this tutorial level. Good to see the ol’ TIME PARADOX death screen, reminding us that history is already written.

On PS4, the graphics on Big Boss look great. Kiefer Sutherland slots into the voice nicely. Admittedly, David Hayter will always be Snake to me, thanks to nostalgia.

I love that the series has added a ton of quality of life adjustments since its last main console release, with hints and instructions given without too much handholding by both Kaz on the radio and the design of the level itself. Kojima’s design chops have always been as strong as his penchant for indulging in meta-fiction. I remember being dropped into the first challenge of MGS1, where you have to enter Shadow Moses from the outside, and finding it difficult to know what I was looking out for.

Granted, I was a child. This game is easier now.

Speaking of children, I’m pretty comfortable saying that this is the darkest opening to a Metal Gear game full stop. To begin with, you’re rescuing children as part of Big Boss’s MSF. Metal Gear has spent a good long time telling us that child soldiers - and children being involved in war at all - are not good. MGS2 sees E.E. die trying to help Snake and her step brother Otacon. Raiden himself is a child soldier, which leads him to be emotionally closed off. Sunny ends up helping save the day in MGS4, but Snake and Otacon, having seen the brutality of war and how it permanently harms children even if they survive, keep her away from the fighting as much as possible. Kojima’s stance on child soldiers has always been - unsurprisingly - that they are a heinous crime and a symptom of a system which knows no morality, only conquest accomplished by feeding humans into a flesh-rending machine for money.

The existence of children that you must rescue from a PoW camp shows that this is far beyond Big Boss realizing the President made him kill his mother figure, lied about why, and still wanted to shake his hand. We are at the precipice before the inevitability of Outer Heaven and Solid Snake. And it’s only getting darker.

Paz, the little girl I just rescued, has had a bomb sewn into her gut. Here I become impressed with the care put into animating Big Boss - Kojima has always seen himself as bridging the gap between film and games so he treats his characters like actors. Their body language matters, not just their voice acting and mechanics. Big Boss’s body language couldn’t be clearer when he realizes what’s happening aboard the helicopter. Gone is the confident super soldier and master of CQC: he raises his hands nervously, like an overwhelmed new parent whose child is sick. He doesn’t know what to do; he knows his skill set as a soldier is completely helpless against a medical crime such as this. He believes in a world where this doesn’t have to happen, but to make it exist, he has to endure this part. He is just as much of a child as he was when he was deceived into killing the Boss. The child is raising children and all his strength and cunning won’t stop the hurt.

Kojima forces us to watch Paz’s guts get opened up and sifted through while Snake holds her down. The panic in her body conveys the pain viscerally. Kojima’s stance that war isn’t a game and treating it like one only removes humanity from the greatest aggressors is clear even as he makes war games. He wants us to know that this is the cost of using war to battle a world controlled by war. It’s not to be fetishized.

The bomb is retrieved, and all seems well. With a little bit of quiet, Kaz rages against their situation impotently. They were played like damn fiddles.

And the tune isn’t over.

Paz announces there’s a second bomb in her… (we don’t get to find out where specifically, I’m going to assume something only mildly horrific and not speculate too hard for my brain’s sake). She jumps out of the chopper, but it’s too late. Her proximity to the chopper immolates all inside and our mission ends. Kojima’s theming is already strong here. The bomb you see, the bomb you catch, is bad. Horrible. More awful than you ever wanted to deal with.

The second bomb is worse.

Indeed, in this series which began on the dangers of nuclear proliferation, Kojima has called out the two bombs which make his message a necessity. The Little Boy, dropped on Hiroshima, was the first and only uranium bomb dropped. 98% of the material did not undergo fission. It obliterated the city nonetheless. The second bomb, Fat Man, was plutonium and devastated Nagasaki, cementing the nuclear bomb as the ultimate in material destruction.

In Metal Gear Solid 2, the first bomb, that the S3 plan was the Solid Snake Simulation, blew the audience’s mind as they learned anyone could be Solid Snake, soldier genes be damned, so long as they experienced the right soldier memes. The second bomb, that your perceptual reality was constructed by sociobiological AI too vastly powerful to be understood by a single mind and the true S3 plan was to curate digital media to its normative liking in the Selection for Societal Sanity, is the one people remember Metal Gear Solid 2 for.

In Metal Gear Solid 3, the Virtuous Mission ends in the disaster of the Boss defecting and Volgin firing the Davey Crockett nuke. Operation Snake Eater ends with Snake realizing his life is a lie; that the nation he has given his life to will never respect it, only burn it as fuel for its own ends.

Here, we have begun with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and one bomb has gone off.

The second bomb, I can only assume, has been armed and left for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Bai Qi In Love - Character Study

Archiving from Reddit. This is also the main post I wanted to bring over but it required my previous Bai Qi - Character Study post LOL.

So I went through Bai Qi's Spring Festival Date and I have not been the same ever since, so I wanted to expel all my emotions in another character post.

Had a couple of songs in the background while I was writing this, so feel free to put them on too while reading this post LOL.

Contains spoilers up to Chapter 15 and lines from unreleased CN cards. Translations are from the CN and JP version, so may have differing lines from the ENG version.

My road map this time is starting out with the origin of Bai Qi's love, moving onto his letter, how he's gone through his life with MC being his North Star, and then finishing off again with just how much he wants to share every moment of his life with her.

I mentioned before in my Speech Quirks post that Bai Qi always defaults to absolute sincerity when he's not sure how to respond to MC and I hope this reminds you of that, and just how he has a sixth sense when it comes to MC. Every cell in his body is attuned to her.

Normally, this level of devotion to someone is probably unhealthy but, well, MC is the paragon of goodness here so he's in good hands LOL.

FALLING SLOWLY (IN LOVE)

First (another song here!), this is the JP translation of ground zero in the [Campus Date]:

The man raised his knife and attacked Bai Qi, stabbing the sharp blade at him. But still, Bai Qi desperately countered.

Finally, everyone was knocked down but Bai Qi, who was bleeding horribly, stumbled. In his hazy consciousness, the sound of the piano gradually weakened. It was like falling into light from heaven.

In that moment, the boss of the gang took this chance to kick Bai Qi and, because of that hit, Bai Qi fell from the rooftop.

Bai Qi reached out with both hands, trying to grab something as he felt himself plummeting.

Suddenly, a melody reverberated, filled with a strong energy, pressure, and tension.

That sound crossed space and time and resonated with Bai Qi's memories.

The sight of his father wearing a military uniform and his gentle mother... memories of his childhood poured into him all at once.

"Lieutenant General, regrettably, there was no evidence of Evol in his genes."

"There's no meaning for such a useless thing to exist."

Since his mother passed away, he was always alone. It was like he was the only one in this world.

If he died, those guys would probably be happy.

Bai Qi heard rhythmical and strong piano notes and, as he was engulfed in the fierce winds, he felt his body becoming lighter.

"NO!"

Not like this.

His life didn't need his father, friends, or a meaning.

Bai Qi clenched his hands into fists with these strong emotions and the power, sleeping deep in his body, awakened.

He felt a pulse in the wind and, between the vast expanse of heaven and earth, life spread through on the wind.

The melody he heard eventually turned into something overflowing with emotions. In the depths of autumn, the gingko leaves blown up by the wind danced and glimmered in the air.

Bai Qi traveled through the air like a bird and small birds, with their wings spread, gathered happily around him.

Entranced with the piano notes, he hummed freely to the song.

The birds flapped their wings, startled by Bai Qi's sudden humming.

Bai Qi gently picked up a small bird and continued to hum.

It was joy for his reborn self and a declaration of the coming light and end of darkness.

He heard the singing of a girl along with the piano notes.

That clear voice had a powerful force which captured people's hearts and wouldn't let go.

The girl's singing and piano drew Bai Qi's mind and body over strongly.

The wind lifted Bai Qi's body and carried him to a window. Looking inside, he saw a girl playing the piano.

Maybe it was the reflection of the gingko leaves fluttering outside the window, but the girl's eyes sparkled like stars.

She continued to accompany herself on the piano and it was as if she was resonating with the wind.

It was an ordinary girl, but he felt a strong spirit from her.

The girl's hands danced on top of the white and black keys and her piano song shook Bai Qi's heart.

He quietly watched her, feeling that the seed sown in his heart was sprouting.

The girl had no idea that her piano saved a boy who was about to fall into a dark abyss.

And there was no way for the girl to know that the boy swore on his life to protect her.

BTW, the song MC was playing at this time was Liszt's Liebestraum No. 3 (Love Dream). During the second anniversary, Papergames confirmed some of the piano songs in the game.

I don't think it needs to be said that Bai Qi was literally going to die at this moment. Not only physically but I'm sure he was mentally at his limits too. Despite the tough act he puts on about being used to loneliness and not caring for what other people think about him, humans are social creatures. He felt like he was all alone in the world and was about to give up on life. I feel like we can draw some analogies to depression here.

There's also an intentional foil in [Chapter 12] between Bai Qi, Jay, and Josie. There's a reference to Josie in [Chapter 7] and MC was sympathizing about how Evol made Josie get treated like a monster, and that sort of darkness can easily change someone. Bai Qi's reply is:

[Main Story 7-18]: "Then I'm very lucky. There was someone who caught me right before I hit the bottom."

But going back to the scene with Jay in [Main Story 12-8], when he's being interrogated, he accuses Bai Qi of not knowing anything about the despair he went through. But, as we all know, Bai Qi lost his father (when he didn't show Evol genes), lost his mother (in the fire), and lost his younger brother (their father took him away and their relationship soured after the death of their mother).

Yet, unlike Jay, he didn't lash out at society and turn to the darkness because he met MC.

[Campus Date] is such a critical date about Bai Qi's character and his convictions and how, while a part of it was formed to go against his father's version of justice, it really solidified because of MC. He learned to love life and cherish its preciousness because of MC.

Because of just how important this ground zero is for Bai Qi, we see references made to this scene again and again and again:

[Main Story 15-7]: "And you saved me. Don't lower your head, look at me. Don't feel insecure and don't feel like you're useless. You caught me again right before I hit the bottom."

[Spring Festival Date]: "The day I met her, there were gingko leaves drifting and falling slowly through the air, and it was the most beautiful time in late autumn. It was also the darkest time of my life. But she was the one who caught me tightly when I fell."

[CN Rumors and Secrets: Ashes]: Bai Qi is bleeding out and touches the picture of MC that he always keeps on him in his breast pocket and sees that a corner of it is stained red. Then he thinks back to the time he heard her play the piano, lightly, gently, slowly, and how it seeped into his body and heart. [Context: this is before he reunites with MC].

THE. LETTER.

We learn about it in [Chapter 7] and how Bai Qi gave it to Minor to pass to the MC, but she saw the bloodstains on it and, because of the bad rumors around Bai Qi and how she misunderstood the sight of him threatening a student to cough up (stolen) money, she thought the letter was a threat LOL.

I'm laughing out loud, but rest assured I'm actually crying inside.

However, the truth is that it was a goodbye letter:

[Main Story 7-20]: "What I regret the most? Probably not handing that letter to that girl personally. [Was it a love letter?] No, it was a goodbye letter. [Why did you write a goodbye letter?] Why should I tell you? [Bro, look, everyone's listening. Give me some face] Because that girl said that she hated it the most when people leave without saying goodbye. [One last question. Could you tell us what was in that letter?] It doesn't matter. Let's just leave that letter in the past. We'll have lots of time in the future together."

For those curious, the contents of the letter is from [CN Rumors and Secrets: Angled Light] but I think this is part of the Dream Heart Lake event series and so won't be released: "Saturday, 9:00AM, I'll be waiting for you in the school library."

By the way, to make things more tragic, you also learn here that he waited for 14 hours at the library, until he was forced out because it was closing, and before he left he slid a gingko leaf into a book that had a collection of Lord Byron poems, which the MC often carried.

The reason he wanted to say goodbye to MC was because, after his Evol awakened and he was going to graduate, his father enlisted him into special training and (threatens) points out that Bai Qi now has someone he wants to protect, but MC is special and she won't have a peaceful life. Does Bai Qi really think he can protect her (as he is)?

It doesn't say what page Bai Qi placed the gingko leaf into, but in [CN Rumors and Secrets: Ashes] Bai Qi thinks he finally understands one of the poems in the book.

Lord Byron's "Don Juan" - Canto the Ninth, XVI and I bolded the part he quotes:

"To be, or not to be?" — Ere I decide, I should be glad to know that which is being? 'Tis true — we speculate both far and wide, And deem, because we see, we are all-seeing; For my part, I'll enlist on neither side Until I see both sides for once agreeing; For me, I sometimes think that Life is Death, Rather than Life a mere affair of breath.

Meanwhile, in [CN Tide of Light SSR Chasing Dreams Date]:

"That year, I did want to give you that letter personally. But I gave myself a way out and left it up to luck. I knew that, at the time, I was still lacking a lot and so I decided that I had to meet you again with my best self."

On a last note, in [CN Yesterday's Breeze SSR Former Days Date] MC asks Bai Qi if he has ever imagined them not reuniting with each other again:

"I've thought about it before. I've thought about how, if I wasn't there, would there be people who would bully that girl and would there be anyone who'd get back at them for her? I've also thought about whether there'd be someone who'd give her a love letter and if she would end up loving someone else... So, if I was to ever meet her again, I had to make sure to catch her. And I'd never let go again."

BTW, in this date, MC has some sort of dream projection where she goes back to their high school days (but the past her also exists LOL so there's two of them) and she has some fun interactions with a grumpy high school Bai Qi. But the heartbreaking part is that MC sees the letter and runs to find him and you get to hear Bai Qi say, self-deriding, that he knew "she" wouldn't come...

HIS (GUIDING MOONLIGHT) NORTH STAR

So, after seeing just how important MC is to Bai Qi, is it any wonder that every atom of his body is attuned to her? SOBS HE JUST LOVES HER SO MUCH. Xu Mo may have the red string of fate, but Bai Qi has "all roads lead to you". She's his lodestone and his compass always points to her.

[CN Lost Forest SSR]: "I will always walk towards you first. You're forever my flag, the one I've kept to throughout every moment of my life."

[CN Go See Him: Military Uniform]: "This uniform and these medals are my convictions, and you are the direction I move forward in."

[CN Southern Wind SSR Road Trip Date]: "The start and end of this journey is you."

I feel like I'm missing more, because I swear the majority of Bai Qi's cards all seem to have some sort of direction quote and relating it back to MC.

Anyway, I won't bother bringing the examples I put in the other post (because they're over there) but this is also why it melts me whenever there's description about Bai Qi's eyes following MC or whenever he's just focusing his attention on her (with heart eyes) in the ASMRs.

Additionally, in my previous character study for Bai Qi, I talked about how MC and Bai Qi both encourage each other to grow with unconditional love and acceptance, but I want to add some quotes here about just how much he takes becoming a better person for MC to heart:

[Spring Festival Date]: "She's the one who told me I could live more strongly, and she's also the one who told me I could live more gently."

[CN Clear After the Rain SSR]: "You're the only one who can find the real me."

[CN Drunk Easterly Wind SSR Three Worlds Date]: "Regardless of whatever lives we have, I will always take my best self and give it to you. This isn't an undertaking and it's not a joke. All of these are just words from my heart."

[Slightly Drunken Date]: "No matter which side of me, they're all yours."

What can I say except that's love, baby! You don't need to complete each other, you just need to encourage each other to be the best version of yourselves!

FOREVER BY YOUR SIDE

Now that we've gotten through the bulk of what I want to say, I'm just going to dump all the romantic stuff Bai Qi has declared to MC.

It really bothers him that he wasn't there for most of her early life, but he maintains his optimism (wouldn't be surprised if he learned it from her) and looks forward to their future together.

[Prank Date]: "I wasn't there for your university, middle school, or elementary school years, and even the time before then. In my memories, there's only the sight of you in high school. At that time, your hair was longer than it is now. But it doesn't matter. From here on, we have time to create new memories."

[Love of my Life SSR Goodnight Wish Call]: "I just... thought about you in many small instances. For example... a movie, a song, a lyric, when I'm crossing the road, and... the moment I close my eyes [...] As long as you're willing, I want to take all the time that's considered yours and turn it to "ours" [...] I want to know how you were before I met you. I want to walk the roads you've walked before, see the sights you've seen before, and... brand my mark on all those moments [...] Yes. I really care about that. I want to make up for all the time I wasn't there in your life. But, right now, what I care about more is our future [...] In our future... I want to hold your hand and walk to the end of our ever after. That's the best future I can imagine."

[Mediterranean Date]: "The missed holidays, the dates I couldn't make, and the many times I had to disappear without being able to tell you... I've never had the time to make up for all of these things. So, no matter what we do, no matter where we go, as long as the person beside me is you, I won't have a single objection."

[Love of my Life SSR Wish Call]: "My wish? From the second I met you again, the wish I made to the stars every night has already been realized."

[2018 Birthday Message]: "Sometimes, whenever I pass an interesting place, I'll think about when I can bring you here to walk around. Whenever I eat something good, I'll buy one more on habit. And, whenever I run into danger on missions, I just need to think about you and my will to fight is rekindled. Because you're here, happy occasions went from being for one person to being for two people. And all the things that would worry someone have disappeared into nothing. Is it strange to hear me say this? But I want to tell you, just how important you are in my life. I don't believe in fate, but I believe in miracles. Meeting you is the most precious miracle in my life."

[Spring Festival Date]: "In the rest of my life, I want to use it all to accompany you, care for you, and love you. This is all genuine. They're all words I want to say to you... words said only to you."

[Main Story 14-22]: "I'll be with you, until the very last moment."

MOM, I LOVE THIS 2D MAN SO MUCH!! Haha, sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. Thank you for reading up to this point and I hope this lets people appreciate Bai Qi more. Gotta spread more propaganda for him and convince people that he's not just the boring vanilla character.

He's someone who was teetering on the edge of darkness and could have become someone who lashed out at society like Jay, but instead he chose to be a protector of the people and to uphold justice (even if his methods are unconventional and morally grey).

He struggles with insecurity but it never gets in the way of what he wants to do and instead motivates him to continue to better himself for MC. There's nothing wrong with setting someone or something as your goal to get through life. Baby steps until you learn how to run on your own, or not when you find someone who will walk the road of life with you.

He's a man who loved the person who literally saved his life (and is probably his raison d'être) for 7 years, never forgot her during that time, and has finally reunited with her.

Okay, ending this post for real now with the Lunar New Year card. BTW the ENG version is totally fine and I have no qualms with its translation, but I just like the nuance more in the CN and JP version.

CN goes 你是我的此生眷恋 which is literally like "you're my affection/attachment in this life". If I wasn't separating it from the English version, I'd translate it as "love of my life" too to simplify it and make it flow. But I find it interesting that 眷恋 (juan lian; sentimental attachment) is used instead of 挚爱 (zhi ai; true love) and the way you'd actually write "love of my life" is 此生挚爱 (ci sheng zhi ai) rather than the card's 此生眷恋 (ci sheng juan lian).

JP goes おまえは俺の一生の憧れ which is literally like "you're the aspiration/longing of my life". Again, I find it so interesting that neither JP or CN are using the character for love 愛 (ai) and JP's 憧れ (akogare) bundles in feelings of yearning, longing, desire, and aspiration. IMO the JP version drives in the fact that MC is someone Bai Qi's trying to catch up to. He's loved her for so long, tries so hard to better himself, and all of it is to become a person he believes can stand by her side.

Collins was not given leave during his mourning. If that were standard, no one would be there to fight the war. He was left helpless with the letter from her family saying that his girl was killed in an air raid, just one of the many casualties. He couldn’t imagine anything worse and he didn’t want to think of that either.

He distracted himself with writing his feelings on paper and stuffing them at the bottom of his suitcase. It worked for a while. But what soon got him was that his darkest emotions were underneath his bed, just sitting there.

An idea popped into his head. It was a waste of paper, ink and stamps. He posted letter after letter to a no longer existing person. But to Collins at least, it felt like he was close to her again. Sealing the envelope was like a stitch over the open wound

The time between letters sent grew and soon Jack was sending a letter once a month. Catharsis underway but he never forgot her and looked upon their time together with fondness instead of depression. That was until an unexpected letter arrived one day. It was in an unfamiliar hand. Curiosity led him to open it sooner rather than later and Collins took a seat on his bunk as he read the letter.

Collins,

I hope you forgive the invasion of privacy. I was merely collecting my friend’s belongings to send to her remaining family when I came across all these letters, dated after her death.

I’m sorry for reading your letters; they were incredibly intimate but I couldn’t leave them unread. You see, finding a person who knows exactly what you’re going through is rare. My friend rather kept to herself but she spoke about you often. Forgive me if I’m wrong but it feels like you might be the only one who can understand me. You see, I lost my partner too.

Again, what you wrote was beautiful. I’m sorry you lost her.

What should’ve been reopening the wound and restarting the mourning process ended up soothing Collins. There was a swelling in his chest as he smiled at the paper. Someone was listening to him and understanding him.

He flipped the letter over to see that the return address neatly printed with an added PS from Y/N about how the inclusion of the address was pointless since she worked at the same place as the intended recipient of Collins’ letters and a request that he write back if he’s comfortable. Collins laughed shortly to himself. It was barely a huff but it came with the tiniest of smiles and that meant something. He just didn’t know what yet.

The train whistle shocked Collins out of his daydream to remind him that the next station was his. It was almost a sign that he should stop. He’d been thinking about Y/N, what she looked like, sounded like, felt like. Almost smacking himself for the last thought, Collins shuffled in his seat. There was a deep set guilt inside him that he was disregarding his previous love for her friend, or worse only feeling an attraction to Y/N as a rebound.

The countryside was a sufficient distraction for the short interlude between stations and soon enough Collins stepped off the train to begin the walk to his home. It was a forty five minutes trek but he’d just been sat for hours. The leg stretch was good for him. Plus he packed light.

He was welcomed home with open arms and plenty of tears. It was for five days but that was more than he’d had in months. He nearly cried in his mother’s arms and fully welcomed the force feeding he received from what must’ve been a week’s worth of rations.

A series of knocks spread through the house. Half expecting it to be his next door neighbour, Collins opened the door up. It was a stranger, a woman in a dark green dress and clutching her bag.

“Hello,” She said, slightly out of breath, “Sorry, does a pilot named Collins live here?”

Amused, Collins nodded, “Yes.”

A smile broke out on her face and she spoke, “I’m Y/N, I’ve been writing to him.”

She was nothing like he’d thought she would be but Collins was nevertheless blown over by her. Her face was somehow familiar and he suddenly had the recollection of seeing her face in the background of a photo sent by his beloved. She was more charming in real breathing colour than in blurry black and white.

“I found one of… my friend’s letters and this was the return address. I had time off so I thought maybe I could find him. Is he in and, if so, may I speak with him?”

“You’re speaking with him now,” Collins revealed with a less than lacklustre “ta-da” tone.

“Oh!” Y/N’s face broke out in a bright smile that made Collins weak at the knees, “Hello!”

“Hello,” He nodded, feeling a flush stretch up his neck.

“I should’ve recognised you, there was a picture she had of you by her bed…” Y/N drifted off, sensing that this was an uncomfortable topic for both of them, “I’m not sure what to say. I didn’t expect you’d actually be home.”

There was still an ache at the reminder of his deceased love but it was coupled with something else that Collins still couldn’t quite put his finger on. It felt nice though.

“I’m on leave,” He explained.

“Oh I should let you get back to it,” Y/N moved back from the doorstep but Collins quickly interjected.

“Would you like to come in?” He followed and pointed behind him inside the house.

“I wouldn’t want to impose,” She paused with her brows adorably furrowed, “Although, in saying that, I don’t think there was a nice outcome from arriving at your house that wouldn’t involve me coming inside.”

They both laugh awkwardly, hands fidgeting with other hands and scratching hairlines. Eager to spend more time committing her presence to memory, Collins stepped aside to let her in. He didn’t really think through what his mother was going to say, nor did he care.

Albeit initially uncomfortable, the conversation flowed between the two of them and without one mention of the person uniting them. She was still there, with them in spirit. However now there was something new and exciting for Collins and Y/N. The sadness ebbed into nostalgia just as the guilt faded away into remembrance and love.

Book Tag: New Year’s Resolutions

Hello again my fellow readers and book eaters! Happy New Year’s Eve! It’s hard to believe 2017 is already at an end.

For the past week I’ve been working on an “18 Questions for 2018″ kind of deal to talk about our book-ish anticipations for the new year. While we will probably be posting those within the next week or two, I came across a fun little book tag for New Year’s resolutions that I wanted to do. So before I ramble on for too long, let’s just jump on in!

GET IN SHAPE: Name a book that doesn’t quite fit in your shelf correctly.

Taste of Darkness by Maria V. Snyder

Here’s the deal with this book:

For Christmas I asked my aunt for some books, and whatever she didn’t buy, I did. I set up my Christmas list back in...I’d say October, so when I went to purchase my books at the beginning of the month, BookDepository no longer had the edition of Taste of Darkness I wanted (or rather it was unavailable at the time). I bought the edition they had, which looked the same as the copy I wanted, but I couldn’t figure out why the book was $4 more expensive. Come delivery day, I find out the book is about 2 inches taller and wider than the standard book. If I had to guess, I accidentally purchased the large print edition...but hey, at least I got my book.

EAT HEALTHY: Name a book that you feel was good for you to read.

Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between) by Lauren Graham

I don’t remember when I bought this book, but I know that I had put it down for other books. However, during the summer I decided I would pick it up again while I was on vacation, because it would be a quick read. There are so many good stories and tidbits that really helped me through this year. It was funny, quirky, and just as informative.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales by Oliver Sacks

I think I’ve own this book for...4 years and every time I pick it up I end up swapping it out for another book. I’m not much of a non-fiction reader, but the case studies in this book sound so fascinating that I just want to get through them! As a psychology major, this book is usually mentioned at some point in about 75% of the psychology classes I’ve taken. Hopefully in 2018 I’m able to sit down and push through it!

QUIT SMOKING: Name a book you kept going back to even though you had finished it.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Granted, I’m not much of a re-reader. But, And Then There Were None is one of my favorite novels of all time. I read it seven to eight years ago, and have been dying to read it again. I’ve gone back to it a few times, but I haven’t finished my reread of it.

SAVE MORE MONEY: Name a book you got for a really good price.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor and Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Amazon was having some insane blowout where some of their bestsellers were more than 50% off. I’ve been eyeing Strange the Dreamer for quite some time, but it was always close to $20 when I went to look at it. On Amazon, at the time I bought it, the book was only $6.32. I figured I might as well pick up Caraval while I was at it, since it was on my TBR list and was only $5.47 compared to it’s usual $18.99. Overall I think I did pretty well with those two.

BE MORE ORGANIZED: How do you organize your bookshelves?

I have very small bookcases (as in...four shelves across two bookcases), so each shelf holds a different set of books. My first shelf has my all-time favorite authors or series on it (all of Alexandra Bracken’s books, the Precious Stone trilogy, and all of Maria V. Snyder’s books). On the shelf below it I keep all my most anticipated TBR books, including all of Agatha Christie books I own. On the second case I have all my read books gracing the top, while the shelves hold all my other TBR books. All the shelves are arranged in alphabetical order by author.

BE PUNCTUAL: Shortest time and longest time it took you to read a book.

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

I had to read both books for my Literature and Controversy course, but The House on Mango Street took me about an hour and a half to reread (since I read it in high school), and Aristotle and Dante took me almost a solid month to finish.

GO OUT MORE: What book made you isolate yourself from the outside world?

Storm Glass, Sea Glass and Spy Glass by Maria V. Snyder

In the last week I’ve really blown through the Glass trilogy. I haven’t been on my laptop, I haven’t been texting people, and I spent hours on end in my bed just reading. If I wasn’t reading, I was sleeping!

BE UNIQUE: What was your favorite book of 2017?

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken and Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

I really tried to pick between the two, but I seriously can’t. They are the two books that stick out to me and my favorites, mostly because both prompted me to read pretty much everything else written by the authors. Their books line my bookcase after all!

BE MORE PERSONAL: What book are you waiting for most this year?

The Darkest Legacy by Alexandra Bracken

I honestly don’t know what’s coming up in the book world for 2018, but I do know Alex is releasing a companion novel to the The Darkest Minds trilogy in the point-of-view of Zu. I’m so incredibly excited!

REALLY, RESOLUTIONS?: What book do you promise to read this year?

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Mostly because I need to return it to my co-worker, but I’ve been trying to get myself to read this book all year! I have the biggest urge to read it, but I keep putting it down in favor of other books. I think once I get through a majority of my TBR, I really won’t have an excuse to not read it.

So many swen I feel are starting to lose all faith and hope in ouat, even the ones who were startlingly swendgame positive. Of course I get it, they're starting to destroy the one thing that made this show great (swan mills family) all in favor for daddy hook and cs. I'd not be surprised if they honestly kill Regina off at this point, I mean if it's the last season what could they lose (besides dignity) ? I just wanted to ask are you still aboard the hope train ?

Hiatus fever. It’s a thing. Last thing we’ve seen was Regina and Emma holding hands in the wish realm. Emma singing one day her prince will come while Regina showed up dressed like a prince. I think all it takes to know where I stand is to scroll down my blog a little. In the last couple of months I’ve written more than a few posts.

The GuideRuby is Emma’s wolf. Her story guides us to the truth, just like the wolves made Graham remember who he was.

Emma’s SuperpowerWe think Emma’s superpower is failing, but there was always one exception to the rule. Emma can lie to herself. Denial.

Hook as the AnimusHook represents a part of Emma she needs to make peace with. It also fits in with what looks like Hook and Emma parenting Henry. It’s about Emma wondering if the darkest parts of herself are fit to be a parent.

The musicalThe musical episode fits in with @colyssa’s Women who run with the wolves meta and is a great opportunity to show us how the characters are really feeling. It might be a way to break through the denial.

Snow & Charming parallelsEmma & Regina’s current story matches that of Snow & Charming in the episode “Heart of Darkness”.

I wouldn’t call what I do hope & faith, however. At least not the blind version of it. I’ve explained my reasoning in this now half-finished series.

One of the parts I hadn’t gotten to yet, was research. I didn’t know anything about fairy tales and I felt like I didn’t understand the show. There are several schools on the interpretation of fairy tales, but luckily Adam gave us one clue. The book Uses of Enchantment was what got him thinking about Fairy Tales in the first place, so we know that they are using the depth psychology approach.

All of the books - you can find a selection here - my more recent theories are based on can be linked back to this book. To Freud, Jung and depth psychology. The references on the show are abundant. It suddenly makes everything make sense. Every part of the show becomes relevant. There are no plot holes and the story threads aren’t dropped, the continuity is in the recurring themes like abandonment, abuse and killing fathers. With every new story we get extra elements… and while everything is relevant, Emma, Regina & Henry are more obviously than ever at the core of this story. If you don’t recognize that, you can’t begin to understand the psychology and the mythology. You can’t decipher the clues. Heteronormativity actually serves to keep the story hidden.

The thing with depth psychology is that it assumes the truth lies beneath the surface. We repress things, but here and there you can see the truth shine through. The entire show is built based on that principle. They use text to tell the main story, but then they use everything else available in audiovisual storytelling to mimic what we hide in our subconscious. The text is full of innuendo and double speak. The music tells its own story, as do the clothes, the references to known stories evoke something else, the setting, the symbolism, the props. The subtlety in the acting is amazing, because even there multiple stories are told.

They don’t try to hide it from us either, they include so much to encourage us to look beyond the surface, like Emma saying the truth is tricky and something to look for.

The actions speak louder than words line is another invite to look beyond the text.

In season one there’s even a reference to the philosopher Derrida. The man is mostly known for his theory of deconstruction. Which - simplified - means that everything that you read holds different interpretations. Meaning changes dependent on context. It’s almost an invitation to pick their story apart the way… well mostly the Swan Queen fandom has been doing from the beginning, but it needs to be applied to everything.

Then I haven’t even gotten into the fact that the Aladdin and Jasmine parallels, OperationOUT, Women who run with the wolves, the circle story structure theory and the recent talks about a different season 7…. All point to Emma & Regina’s relationship finally being taken out of subtext at the end of this season or at the beginning of the next.

So, hope? I guess you could call it that, but it’s not unsubstantiated.

2019 New and Future Cars

To hear some tell it, we’ll soon reflect on the past several years and the near future as the final halcyon days of machines made to be driven. The feedback we receive from you, our readers and fellow gearheads, along with a growing mainstream global narrative, illustrates an increasingly pessimistic view of automotive inevitability: a world dominated by urban transportation pods, ride-sharing programs, and of course the darkest cloud looming above the enthusiast community—soulless autonomous cars that might drive us to our destinations perfectly well but with nary a hint of the passion that binds millions of like-minded members of the car community together. Opinions, even well-educated ones, are all over the map when it comes to predicting the arrival of this Orwellian existence, but thankfully there are still far more than a handful of new and future cars to put your mind at ease.

This year we begin our New and Future Cars feature with seven hyper performers because, well, #NOBORINGCARS. From here, over the next few weeks, we will introduce you to and update you on what we believe are the most interesting and significant vehicles on the near horizon. The best news of all: Drivers will need to keep their eyes on the road and their hands and feet on the controls of each and every one of them.

McLaren Senna

“The Senna is such a whirlwind of g forces, so Krakatoa-like in its speed and braking power, in only a lap or two it could easily reduce a NASA astronaut to a trembling, babbling impersonation of Linda Blair.” That’s what our Arthur St. Antoine said recently after driving the Senna for several laps around the U.K.’s Silverstone Circuit—and when you look at the hardware McLaren blessed the Senna with, you know he was pedaling a savagely devastating car and not peddling hyperbole. Do not mistake the Senna for an upgraded 720S: The cars share some basic hardware, but this is an entirely new automobile—the pinnacle of McLaren’s Ultimate Series range. Legal for street use and limited to 500 copies, the Senna uses the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 found in the 720S, but improvements bump output to 789 hp and 590 lb-ft. A slightly reworked seven-speed dual-clutch paddle shifter carries over. Top speed is 211 mph, but that’s not what this carbon-fiber McLaren, named for late three-time Formula 1 champ Ayrton Senna, is about. With its active aerodynamics, almost 1,800 pounds of downforce, and 2,900-pound curb weight, track-day lap records should be very afraid. After driving it, we know the F1 legend would be proud of his namesake. And if, somehow, it’s still not enough for you, McLaren plans to build 75 track-only Senna GTRs that will lap even quicker, priced at about $1.4 million each. Not interested in the Senna, whose looks might not be everyone’s cup of racing fuel? By year’s end we expect to see McLaren finally unveil the long-talked-about 243-mph hybrid-powered BP23 three-seater. Think of it as the modern follow-up to its legendary F1 supercar of the ’90s. It should land late this year.

Dallara Stradale

Sure, Ferrari and McLaren are famous race teams that also build some of the world’s best performance cars, but what enthusiast doesn’t want a car from a company still known mostly for building top-level dedicated racing chassis such as IndyCar’s present-day IR-18? That’s where Italian constructor Dallara comes in with its Stradale, the first road car to bear its name. This is a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis covered in carbon bodywork, and one available in a doorless configuration (among others)—you don’t want to add weight while adversely affecting aerodynamics, do you? No, you don’t. And speaking of aero, up to 1,800 pounds and change of downforce mean cornering forces can exceed 2 g, with the approximately 1,900-pound (dry weight) Stradale also boasting 395 hp and 369 lb-ft from its 2.3-liter Ford EcoBoost four-cylinder, channeled through either a six-speed manual or single-clutch automatic transmission; that should be good for 0-60 mph in the low 3-second range. The bad news: Dallara didn’t want to float the tens of millions it would have cost to certify the Stradale for sale in the U.S.

Brabham BT62

The past year or so has seen more than its share of new mid-engine hypercars, including Mercedes-AMG’s Project One and Aston Martin’s Valkyrie, and there are plenty more in the pipeline. From ex-Formula 1 driver and Le Mans winner David Brabham’s Brabham Automotive comes the carbon-fiber-bodied BT62, a track-day kraken inspired by his famous late father Jack’s third F1 championship, in 1966—the only F1 title won by a competitor while driving a car of his construction. The BT62 gets a six-speed sequential gearbox and a 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V-8 from another maker (Brabham hasn’t identified it), which Brabham pumps up to send 700 hp and 492 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Handling should be off the leash thanks to Michelin slick tires, a dry weight of 2,143 pounds, and an alleged maximum downforce figure of more than 2,600 pounds. Brabham plans to build 70 examples for the 70th anniversary of Jack’s first race, with the initial 35 copies featuring liveries honoring the 35 Grand Prix wins achieved by Brabham race cars. Driver coaching is part of the buyer’s package—a good thing, too, since traction control is the BT62’s only “driver aid.” The car’s name is an extension of the BT60B designation given to Brabham’s final Grand Prix car, in 1992.

Fittipaldi EF7

Add the name Fittipaldi to the others steeped in racing tradition that now seek to stick a Nomex-covered toe into the high-performance road-car arena. Two-time Formula 1 champion, two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, and one-time IndyCar champion Emerson Fittipaldi has long dreamed of building a car bearing his name, and the EF7 he unveiled at the 2017 Geneva auto show is the result. Developed in conjunction with Pininfarina and racing-centric German engineering company HWA, which will build the cars, Fittipaldi Motors’ shark-styled track-day toy will be crafted to the tune of 39 examples, the number you get when totaling Emmo’s F1 and IndyCar wins and championships. No surprise, it features a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and carbon body panels, with weight targeted to come in at less than 2,300 pounds. Power comes from a 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V-8 making 600 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, with a racy 9,000-rpm redline; 0-60 mph should happen in less than 3 seconds. Like a purpose-built race car, the six-speed sequential gearbox is a stressed part of the chassis. Similar to the Brabham BT62, buyers will get professional instruction—in this case from Fittipaldi himself. A street-legal version could be in the offing down the road once all track-spec cars are delivered.

Hennessey Venom F5

Building off the success of the tremendously fast Venom GT that claimed the production car speed record five years ago (though Bugatti would quarrel with that), the forthcoming Venom F5 is the Texas performance peddler’s second hypercar. Compared to the Lotus-based Venom GT, the F5 is a ground-up, clean-sheet design with a bespoke chassis. A unique 8.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 spits out what Hennessey claims to be 1,600 hp and 1,300 lb-ft, managed by either a seven-speed single-clutch semi-automatic or six-speed manual transmission. For the very brave (or the very stupid), the F5 will reportedly top out at 301 mph.

Ruf SCR

You can be forgiven for thinking this is Ruf’s latest package for the Porsche 911 at first glance. Despite its very, very Porsche-esque silhouette, the SCR is the second car Ruf has built from the chassis up. As expected of Ruf, the SCR is incredibly high-tech, using a carbon-fiber monocoque and integrated rollcage adorned with a pushrod suspension and carbon-fiber body panels. It’s fast, too—a Ruf-designed 4.0-liter water-cooled flat-six sends 503 hp and 347 lb-ft to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. All this power pushes just 2,755 pounds, allowing those with access to the autobahn to touch 199 mph.

Pininfarina H2 Speed

With the traditional role of the coachbuilder and external design house all but disappearing in the face of in-house operations, legendary Italian studio and longtime Ferrari partner Pininfarina has been increasingly striking out on its own, most recently with a lean, green hypercar known as the H2. In place of a massive turbocharged V-8 or V-12, the H2 uses a set of four “race-spec” electric motors outputting a combined 643 hp at 13,000 rpm, fed by a 250-kWh hydrogen fuel cell system. Pininfarina says the H2 will hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and top out at 186 mph. Just 12 will be made, restricted to use at a few track days hosted by Pininfarina around the world
