How to Make a Sine Drop in Music Production [Blog Tutorial]

What's a Sine Drop? The ‘sine drop’ is a classic sound, typically used in synth based music, or as sound design in sci-fi games, or films. It’s a great effect when used subtly, adding flavour and movement to the music, commonly creating a dropping feeling, as if you’re falling into something, or even for horror, as when used in a specific manner, the effect can replicate a sense of dread.

If you don’t know what a sine wave is, it’s basically a fundamental pitch, with no distortions or harmonic layers. Unlike when you press one key on a piano, where many different pitches in the harmonic series will sound to create the tone that you hear, a sine wave is a smooth sound with just the fundamental frequency. It is also represented as a smooth line, in a regular wave fashion. The reason we use a sine wave for this technique is because of its smooth nature. It is easy to blend into your music, while still having the same effect. Regardless of that, you can add plugins to stylise, and add nuances to the sound if that is the desired effect!

Examples

My absolute favourite use of this effect is in Joe Hisaishi’s score for Princess Mononoke. This was my main inspiration for writing this article, and adding it to a hybrid orchestral production of my own. In the track ‘ The Legend of Ashitaka ‘ It adds SO much drama and tension to the music that when it drops, the release is just ethereal bliss. Breaking through is a lush string melody that soars, giving me chills every single time. You can make a similar basic sound using any Sine on a soft-synth. In this case, I’m using Logic Pro’s stock synth ES2. A good starting point is to use the preset Sine Bass, but I like to start from scratch, as this is where interesting things/happy accidents can happen! ->  Make a 100% sine wave by choosing Sine on oscillator 1 and switching off oscillators 2 + 3. Move the triangular oscillator blend to only sound oscillator 1. It also doesn’t hurt to turn up the sine level dial on the right hand side of ES2. 

->  Ensure that the synth is playing a mono-voice mode (Legato is even better). Sliding the glide up to ~around~ 1800ms.

-> Head down to the ADSR settings, and increase the attack so the notes start smoothly, and don’t suddenly cut in. Also pull back the sustain by about half.

-> Add some distortion in ES2 or with a plugin to beef up the sound. You want the distortion to be bright, if you can, but it’s down to personal taste. Some chorus works really nicely to smooth out the distortion too!

-> Now we’re going to assign LPF FM [Low Pass Filter Frequency Modulation] to the MIDI-Modulation control for some automation later on. Turn the blend fader in the big round filter section in the middle of ES2 all the way to the right (and increase the cutoff on the right while you’re there..). This is because we need to use the FM dial for the modulation. Then, go to the dark blue router panel and on the first set, click the box, and on the dropdown choose LPF FM. The middle box should be set to off, and choose ModWhl for the lower. Then slide the little green arrow to the side all the way down. This step allows us to control the filter setting with your modulation wheel, or just the modulation channel in Logic (CC1), which you can draw automation with!  

-> Then for some extra movement, you can add a really slight pitch vibrato to the synth sound we created. A similar method to the previous step with some differences. Choose Pitch 1 for the first box, then the middle “via” box, choose LFO2, and the last box choose LFO1. Then make a tiny space between the two arrows that appear to the right, so the depth isn’t too noticeable. Also, you might want to adjust the LFO2 rate below, to about 1/8. 

-> Then to execute the sine drop, choose a note in the high/mid range, and let that gliiiiiiide down to a note in the low range. A cool effect can be made when you swell the modulation once it hits the low note. Also, I add a light echo and reverb to create space. -> To add impact and a ‘destination reached’ feeling, you can add a low impact, or boom noise. These steps are just a guide and I wholeheartedly hope you manage to get something useful out of them! It’s a good position to branch out and try your own things with this particular sound, whether you’re adding this to for drama to an orchestral track, or doing some badass sci-fi sound design. Today was at least a good lesson in how to deal with Purrely because Dimensional Barrier still works on Noir even while it's unaffected. Still ate up like half an hour of my usual play time. [Win]

Only had time for one more game after that I just opted for my Flour Garden build with Madolche.

What Does PRE Button Do? | Audio Mixer Setup

Quick Answer: The PRE button on an audio mixer switches a channel's aux from post-fade to pre-fade operation. This dictates whether or not the aux send is affected by fader adjustments for that channel.

Where Is The PRE Button On An Audio Mixer?

PRE, aka Pre Fade, buttons are typically located near the aux controls on each channel strip; you should find that each channel has its own PRE button.

How Does The PRE Button Work?

There are two things you need to do in order for the PRE button to work. - Set the gain for the channel - Turn on or unmute the channel The PRE button toggles the state of the aux send from being post-fade to pre-fade. What does this actually mean? Imagine you have the channel fader set to zero/unity, and an aux send level dialed in for a monitor channel. By default, any adjustment you make to the channel level will affect the monitor channel too. If you press the PRE button, the aux send level for the monitor channel will not be affected by any changes you make to the main mix when adjusting the channel level.

When To Use The PRE Button?

Pre-fade is really useful for setting up monitors in a situation where the front-of-house mix is constantly changing, but the performer doesn't want to be affected. Background vocalists are a great example of where this is useful. Their vocals may be prominent in the mix of some songs and buried in others. Irrespective of the front-of-house mix, they need to hear themselves in their in-ear monitors at a consistent volume to make sure they're singing in key.

When To Avoid Using The PRE Button?

Avoid using the PRE button on any aux that you need to accurately track what's happening in the main stereo mix. Let's say you have a dedicated aux for your live stream; you want it to track what's happening in the room, with perhaps one or two slight modifications. You can set different levels for your live stream but keep everything relative to the main mix.

PRE Vs. POST Buttons | What's The Difference?

On some audio mixers, everything we have spoken about is reversed; by default, the channels are pre-fade. These mixers have a POST or Post Fade button to toggle the pre/post behavior of the channel. So, they essentially do the same thing, just the other way around. It varies by manufacturer, much like Yamaha mixers have "On" buttons while Mackie mixers have "Mute" buttons.

working out some alana stark endgame things.

alana’s body is largely made up of prosthetics, including an extremely sophisticated android left arm to supplement where hers was virtually crushed by a car. there’s a partly mutilated blast of scarring in the form of visible steel melted into her cheek across the left side of her face. the damage seems almost like she’s been raked by a set of claws.

a series of complex and frankly terrible events lead alana to have been exposed as the invincible iron man after she’s been trapped in space. the earth’s convinced of her death, and sorting through this understanding plus the snap leaves the world in chaos. alana stark is iron man changes everything, and now it’s another element of entropy inside the loss of half the populace.

lena is running l corp in addition to stark industries in alana’s absence.

the steel fused into her face was due to an incident during the events prior to, having been forced during a battle and repeated hits to the helmet to rip it off her head. the metal melted into her skin and the process of removal would be more painful than merely allowing it to remain. this was caught on camera, nationally broadcasted, threw her identity into the light.

the loss of trish and peter prompts alana and stark industries to take up their precise expected position: doing as much as is possible for relief and rescue efforts for victims of the snap. this is first set in motion by lena and then picked up by alana once she returns from space.

during the first few months, alana ranges between selectively mute and, were it not for lena and daphne, would be totally isolated.

her preferred form of communication for the first year or so is sign language. being in space severely retraumatized her and alana often finds it’s hard for her to stay completely present.

she’s not adjusting well to her public identity. she’s heavily expected even more to fix the events of the snap now that iron man is exposed, and while undoubtedly with lena’s help anything is possible, alana’s exhausted and buckling under the pressure.

a slow return to aa also becomes attending support groups for those having been victimized by the snap. lena comes with her if largely because it’s so important alana can actually get help and, inadvertently, kind of also finds some help herself, if in small parts and by proxy.

starts a huge foundation that helps the displaced children who have lost parents in the snap.

If you told Logan he and Patton would be parents to a cute son named Oliver, he’d look at you perplexed.

But now? He wouldn’t have it any other way.

He and Patton and little Ollie were in a small, private section of the Royal Gardens as opposed to the main garden itself, as that was where the Royal Family would mainly be.

Originally, it was Patton’s idea, as the moral Beta wanted to have a happy day with Logan and their son, just the three of them with no work or any other duties keeping them apart.

At first, Logan was adamant about not causing confusion and delay within the palace by not doing any work; however, after some gentle reassurance from Virgil, and some stubborn encouragement from Roman, he simply obeyed his King and Queen and spent the day with his family.

And after spending a whole day outside— with the ability to allow his shoulders to slump and his posture to relax, and to have a slightly unkempt look with no one to judge or criticize— he was quite satisfied.

The sky was ombre with dark plus and purples, not completely black just yet. Dots of sparkling white decorated the sky. The moral Beta can see very familiar shapes as he gazed up at them from his position on the grass, searching for some of his particular favorites.

He gazes away from the star-dusted sky as he heard soft footsteps padding towards him. Little Ollie was staring down at him with his big, deep blue eyes.

Logan sits up a little, putting most of his weight on his arms as he stared at his son with a gentle look. “Hello, my son. Is there something you need?”

Oliver shook his head. Even if the boy can speak a multitude of words at this point in his development, he had his moments of being quiet and observant very much like his father. He holds his tiny little hands out and presents something to Logan.

It was a flower crown. Patton had taught their son to make some earlier that afternoon after helping Oscar, the Royal Gardener, tend to some of the plants that he was curious about. His wide eyes watched as his daddy weaved and chained certain flowers together to make a wreath for his hair.

Quickly, the little boy picked up the skill, and now he was presenting his creation to the logical Beta.

Unlike the one on his son’s head— made up lilacs, symbolizing the joys of youth; and spring crocuses, symbolizing youthful gladness— the one in his hand were made up of wildflowers with some lavender and sage weaved in as well— symbolizing virtue and wisdom respectively.

Logan turned red in the face. “Is…Is that for me?”

Oliver nodded. There wasn’t a smile on his face, but there was a gentleness in his eyes that very much reminded him of Patton.

Logan sat up a little more and bent his head enough for his son to place the chain within his dark hair. The small flowers and herbs looked dark against his head due to the darkness, but from how his son looked satisfied, the logical Beta considered that to be enough.

“Thank you, my boy.”

Now Oliver smiled. He trotted toward his father, diving head first into his lap. Logan grunted as he was thrown back down onto the damp grass, but a warm laugh left his lips.

“Wha fader do?” the Omega toddler whispered in curiosity. Logan moved him so he was laying on his chest, a gentle hand running through his dark, curly locks.

“I’m looking for constellations.” the logical Beta whispered back.

Dark blue eyes widened in excitement and even more curiosity; his head was thrown back as he hastily looked up like his father. Logan chuckled and carefully maneuvered his son off his chest so he was also lying on the grass beside him.

“Where stars?”

Logan starts to explain in a hushed tone, pointed at each one he finds. “Right there, that’s Ursa Major, the Great Dipper. And right underneath it is the Leo Minor, the lesser Lion.”

Oliver squints before nodding, paying attention to his father’s words. “Like Uncle Woman?”

A snort followed by a snicker. The Omega toddler should be fortunate said uncle isn’t out here with them, otherwise it’d be a night of indignant, kingly noises and a bruised ego.

“Yes,” he says when he’s calmed. “Very much like Uncle Roman.” He continues to point and whisper, “Above the Ursa Major is the Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. Within the bears you can see the Dippers—”

“Fader?”

“Yes, my boy?”

“Why we whisper?” Oliver asked.

Logan stopped abruptly, finger lowering a little. “I’m…I’m not sure. But I’m sure you were the one who started it.”

Oliver shook his head. “No.”

Logan nodded. “Yes.”

Oliver shook his head faster. “No!”

Logan nodded slower. “Yes!”

“Are my boys having fun out here?” an amused voice called out to them.

Both of them looked up to see Patton standing in front of his mate’s feet. In his hands was a tray of goblets and a bottle, steam rose up from them, meaning it was warmed milk; underneath of his arms was a giant pillow and a blanket; and still on his head was the flower crown he made earlier, which were of daisies (innocence and purity) and sunflowers (adoration).

His son nods, beaming happily. “Fader tell me of stars!”

“Constellations,” Logan gently corrects with a small smile.

Patton also smiles happily. The logical Beta’s heart fluttered in his chest. It was little things like that that showed him just how much of his husband was also in their son.

“Is that right?” he asks as he kneels down beside his family. He sets down the tray of warmed milk and arranges the blanket and pillows for them.

“Yeah! He talk about spoons!”

“Spoons?”

“The Dippers.”

Patton giggles, nodding in understanding.

Once everything was in place, the family climb on top of the soft, fluffy material. Patton’s head was resting against his mate’s shoulder while their son was cozied up between them. Logan had a hand resting on the moral Beta’s waist.

“Now, what were you going to say about spoons?”

Logan scowled lightly, but continued to talk about any stars and constellations that were shining above them.

“Fader?” Oliver asks again.

“Yes?”

“What you favwite star?”

Logan ponders that question thoughtfully before turning to his family. Patton saw something akin to love and happiness shining in his eyes, similar to the twinkles in the sky.

“I like to think my favorites are the ones that are right beside me.” He gently twists and gives his husband a sweet kiss. When Oliver giggled and let out a high-pitched ‘ewww!!,’ Logan and Patton smiled and started tickling their son’s belly.

The Omega toddler shrieked in laughter, hands clapping in glee.

Hearing their son laughing brought laughter to them. They continued to laugh and smile until their cheeks were red and their lungs were out of breath.

When Oliver let out a yawn, Patton giggled. “I think it’s time for all of us to go to bed.” he says as he reaches over to grab the goblets and bottle of warmed milk. “But first, some milk to warm our bellies.”

Logan affectionately rolled his eyes while Oliver giggled as he made grabby hands for his bottle.

“Puns, Patton. Really?”

“What can I say, I’m a punny guy!”

This time a groan with another giggle.

They drank their warmed milk and continued to talk about constellations until Oliver began to drift off to sleep. When he did, Patton rushed back inside to grab some an extra blanket so they wouldn’t get cold in the spring night air.

He came back and covered them all with the blankets before snuggling into them.

“Lo-Lo?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you regret everything that we’ve been through?” Patton asks in a gentle voice, genuinely curious as to what Logan would tell him.

Like before, Logan had to ponder that thoughtfully, but he also knew he had to be serious about it.

He remembered how upset and cold he was when the moral Beta wanted to use the Felix Gestare potion in order to try and have a baby. It went against all the science and logic that Logan had studied for years and years. Even if Thomas and his late Consort, a Beta and Alpha respectively, had Roman this way, it was something that the logical Beta didn’t want for them.

However, Patton was very adamant about it. And so, Emile gave him the potion, they mated (albeit, a little forcefully, particularly from Logan’s end), and soon, they were pregnant with Oliver.

And throughout, Logan maintained some form of distance. While he felt guilty about it later, back then, he had a very good reason: Thomas nearly died in childbirth, and he didn’t want his mate to go through the same thing. Sure enough…that nightmare almost came true.

Patton suffered an internal hemorrhage, leaving Logan to suffer with his thoughts (even if it was only for about a day). But even still, it made the logical Beta truly realize how much he truly loved his husband and for him to possibly be dying crushed him immensely.

“No,” he finally says with a yawn. He slips off his glasses and rests them in a spot where they wouldn’t break. “Despite my negative emotions, and I still apologize for that, I do not regret us having the experience that gave us our Oliver Flynn.”

And he truly means that. Oliver is one of the purest lights of Logan’s life, someone who would the logical Beta would do any and everything for besides Patton (and the Royal Family, but that’s besides the point).

“Good,” Patton whispers, looking down at their little boy. He gently runs his fingers against his soft, curly hair, listening to his soft snores. “Because I don’t regret it either.”

Logan gently takes his mate’s glasses off and places them where he laid his own. He kissed his son’s head, then kissed Patton’s cheek.

“I love you, Patton,” he whispers as he drifts off to sleep. “I love you both…”

Patton smiles, pressing a gentle kiss to Logan’s hair. “We love you too, Lo-Lo.”

we also had a mini lecture during our yfp week to catch up on missed lectures due to being online. we started by recapping how to turn on and off the studio and then looked at gain staging (mic preamps) and creating a headphone mix

gain staging (mic preamps):

place mic around sound source 

when you plug it into channel 1, the input and output is line 1

if it needs phantom power, turn on +48v 

the red dial is gain and you turn it to the right level (2/3s of the way)

then make sure the fader is up, press the mix a button and turn up the master fader

when you are finished and want to hear it, turn off the ‘R” button on logic (DAW) and the press the ‘DAW’ button on the desk

if you need more than 8 channels, you need to use the external box to fix the gain for the additional mics (to the left of the SSL desk)

Pro Tools Shortcuts To Memorize

Reading time: 3-5 minutes

Yeah we use Pro Tools (actually I use Logic as well). To be honest, I don't really care too much about what DAW I use. I am comfortable using Pro Tools because I've been using it for 15 years, that's about the only reason. So get over it all you naysayers! This post is for the Pro Tools users out there :)

I'm just going take it easy on this one and list a bunch of essential Pro Tools Keyboard Shortcuts. Make these second nature, and your workflow will drastically improve.

OPERATION

Command + Space, F12 or 3 on numpad = Start recording (careful of spotlight search on Mac)

Space = Stop recording

Option+L / Numpad 5 = Loop Recording toggle

Command + Shift + P / Numpad 6 = QuickPunch toggle

Control + Click on main Record Enable button = Switch through types of Recording

Command + Click on track Record Enable button = Record-safe track

Return = Jump to start of Session

Enter on Numpad = Create a Marker

Control + / = Create New Playlist

EDITING

Command + Z = Undo

Command + Shift + Z = Redo

Command + X = Cut

Command + E = Seperate at selection

Command + H = Heal separation

Option + Shift + 3 = Consolidate selection

Command + C = Copy

Command + V = Paste

Command + A = Select All

Command + D = Duplicate selection

Command + R = Repeat selection

Command + T = Trim Region to Selection

Command + 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 = Select tool (7 is multitool)

Command + [ or ] = Horizontal Zoom

Control + Option + A = Zoom until all tracks are visible horizontally

Command + Option + [ or ] = Zoom in/out on a waveform

Control + Option + Up/Down = Increase or decrease track height

Command + F = Creates Fade

Control + Click on playlist button = Open Playlist View On Track

Option + Control + v = Copy Selection To Main Playlist

MIXING SHORTCUTS

Command + '=' = Switch between Edit and Mix window

Option + Command + M = Narrow Mix / Normal Miix

Command + Click = Add new track to selection

Option + Shift + Click = Change Input/Output/Sends/Insert/Mute/Solo FOR SELECTION

Option + Click = Select all /execute all /change all /add to all/ mute all/ solo all

Shift + Click = Selection from selected to where you click

Option + Command + Select Input/Output/Sends = Assign Input/Output/Sends in ascending order from the point you selected

Option + Click on Fader or Knob = Jump back to zero

Command + Slide Fader or Turn Knob = More precise selection

Option + Drag and Drop = Copy Insert

Command + Click on Insert = Bypasses Insert

Command + Option + Click on Insert = Bypasses a row of Inserts

Command + Click on Solo Solo-safe track

Command + G = Make a Group for selection

Command + Shift + G = Suspend all groups

Comman + Option + B = Bounce to Disk

oh , if that ‘s not the biggest smile that lights up her entire face. stark is a sucker for exactly one thing and that ‘ s being thought of. affording him even a little bit of consideration is enough to make blinky blink so briefly bright it almost startles stark himself. buzzes underneath her hand when she touches him , helpless to do a thing about it to hide it.

maybe sometimes he ‘ s unguarded in the worst way. it ‘ s no wonder the so - called emotionless man in a tin can fails entirely at being apathetic. those sweet baby blues hide nothing. he takes the cup gratefully with an even bigger grin. 

“ i just wanted to see you , so i don ‘ t know how you just knew. but you also brought coffee , so at least i can pretend it ‘ s about more than me wanting to get out of an hour long meeting. it ‘ s not just you being here and distracting me from a meeting that i don ‘ t want to attend. it ‘ s you with caffeine to keep me awake. you ‘ re just helping me survive the last home stretch of my day. so this ? this is not an excuse at all. “
