10 Vaishno Devi pilgrims die, 57 injured as bus falls from bridge in Jammu; most were from Bihar
Jammu, May 30
Ten Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims, most of them from Bihar, were killed and 57 others were injured on Tuesday as their bus fell into a gorge after ramming into the railing of a bridge here on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, officials said.
The death toll may go up as Government Medical College Hospital Principal Shashi Soodan said two of the injured admitted there are critical.
Officials said the bus, which was on its way from Amritsar to Katra, met with the accident in Jhajjar Kotli area. Katra is a base camp for the pilgrims visiting the famous shrine atop the Trikuta hills.
"The accident took place at Jhajjar Kotli bridge. Ten people have died. Rescue operation is almost compete," Jammu Senior Superintendent of Police Chandan Kohli told PTI. "We are investigating the reasons behind the accident."
Locals, CRPF and police personnel rushed to the spot and launched the rescue operation.
The fifty-seven injured have been admitted to the GMC hospital in Jammu and two of them are critical. "Two persons were brought dead in the hospital while others died on the spot," said Soodan.
A CRPF officer said 10 bodies had been recovered.
The bus skidded off the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and rolled down the bridge over a nullah at Jajjar Kotli between 6.30 am and 7 am, the officials said.
They said most of the travellers were from Bihar's Lakhisarai and were on pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi for a religious function of their child. They were members of an extended family.
Ravinder Panday, one of the travellers, said they felt that something hit the bus. "It lost balance and rolled down. The vehicle was on its way from Amritsar to Katra carrying people who were going for pilgrimage to the cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi," he said.
The accident site looked horrific with bodies trapped under the mangled remains of the bus.
Describing the accident, a witnesses said the bus was in the left lane, but it crossed over to the right side after the driver lost control, hit the railing of the bridge and went down.
The front wheels came off and got stuck in the parapet of the bridge.
"We were going to pay obeisance at Mata Vaishno Devi temple and perform ‘mundan’ of our child. We were several families together," said Ramesh Kumar, who escaped unhurt.
For the journey to Katra, the vehicle, carrying a registration number of Uttar Pradesh (UP 81 CT 3537), should have taken a left turn nearly two kilometres before the spot of the accident, but passengers said the driver seemed to have lost the direction and was probably going to the Udhampur-Srinagar side of the highway.
On May 21, a 27-year-old woman was killed and 24 people were injured when a Rajasthan-bound bus carrying Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims overturned in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district.

The Ultimate Maa Vaishno Devi Yatra Guide
Tumblr media
Did you know that millions of pilgrims visit the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine each year? It's no surprise that it's one of India's most well-known pilgrimage sites. It is regarded the holiest of the 108 Shakti Peethas and the Maa Vaishno Devi Yatra.
The sacred sanctuary is nestled in the Trikuta Hills, a three-peaked mountain at an elevation of 5200 feet above sea level.
Mata Vaishno Devi is thought to be the avatar of Goddess Durga and is said to live in a cave. Inside the cave, three naturally formed rocks known as Pindis are believed to be the manifestations of three Goddesses: Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.
To reach the holy cave, devotees must walk 12 kilometres. The trek's base camp is Katra, and Yatra registration is required, which is free of charge. There are two ways to register: online and offline.
The offline counter is located in Katra's main market. Devotees can register for online registration at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board's official website. Carry a hardcopy of the Yatra Access Slip if you registered online.
Pilgrims can access the sacred cave by a pedestrian path or stairs. Other modes of transportation to the temple include ponies/horses, palki/palanquin, and Katra To Sanjichat Helicopter Price.
How do you get to Vaishno Devi Bhawan from Katra?
There are two options for getting from Katra to Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan: by road or by plane. Ponies, palki, electric vehicles, and helicopters are also available for hiring by devotees. Let's take a closer look at each -
By Road (Holy Route) -
By Pony/ Palki-
Pilgrims can hire a pony/ horse and palki/ palanquin from Darshani Darwaza in Katra, which marks the beginning of the holy journey to Ardhkuwari or Bhawan. If necessary, they can spend the night at Ardhkuwari. Ardhkuwari is only 6 kilometres from the start of the sacred Yatra.
Trekking –
Devotees who want to hike to Bhawan can use one of three routes:
An old route that begins in Darshani Darwaza and travels through Ban Ganga, Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari, Himkoti, and Sanjichhat.
The second path, which begins just below Ardhkuwari near Indraprastha viewpoint, also begins at Darshani Darwaza and travels through Ban Ganga and Charan Paduka. It is 500 metres shorter than the traditional route, where ponies are not permitted. This route is substantially wider and more soft than the others.
The third and most recent course begins in Tarakote and does not allow horses or palkis. This road has a ramp-type design and spectacular views, with a reasonable incline and sideway amenities. Tarakote Marg connects to the Banganga-Ardhkuwari track, which begins near Gulshan Langar. This is a 1.5-kilometer connection path that allows Yatris to choose between the Banganga-Ardhkuwari route and the completely pedestrian Tarakote Marg.
By Helicopter –
Beginning at Katra, devotees can begin on the Vaishno Devi Helicopter Booking. The plane will land you in Sanjichhat, around 2.5 kilometres from the sacred cave. On the official website of the Shrine Board, you can hire a helicopter online. Bookings can be made up to 60 days in advance. Passengers must have a valid ID, proof of address, and the debit/credit card used to pay. Boarding may be denied if any of the documents are missing.
Pilgrims can also purchase their tickets offline.
Tickets from Katra to Sanjichhat can also be purchased at the Current-heli ticket desk, where travellers must produce proper ID and travel documentation. Offline ticket purchases are subject to seat availability.
The website allows you to order one-way or round-trip helicopter tickets.
Bookings for the Vaishno Devi Yatra helicopter are also available for Katra-Sanjichhat-Katra. Darshan's helicopter ticket is also termed a VIP Pass. A one-way ticket from Katra to Sanjichhat or Sanjichhat to Katra, on the other hand, is not considered a VIP Pass.
