Great workout performance and a trip down memory lane today. I had a #steadystaterun on the schedule today. These are a staple of any @mcmillanrunning plan, the idea being you run hard but not beyond your #lactatethreshold for an extended period of time. For me today, that meant 20 minutes, in between a long warmup and cooldown. Over time, you go longer with these runs and increase your stamina which helps for any distance you are racing. The #mcmillanrunningcalculator gave me target pace range, and I ended up perfectly in the middle of that range. Considering I felt sore from a #longrun and strength workout over the weekend, I was really happy with this. I often think of steady state as #marathonpace and while I don’t do marathons anymore, it’s good to know I can still dial that pace in when I need to.

Wait, but what’s up with those wild shoes? The @spirausa Stinger is a shoe that had a nice little run about 5-6 years ago, developing a small but loyal following. It featured something called a #wavespring in the midsole. And it literally was a spring, that propelled you off the ground quickly with less fatigue. Sounds kinda like a carbon shoe that’s all the rage now, doesn’t it? And these didn’t have anywhere near the #vaporflynextpercent pricetag, coming in at about $100. Unfortunately, the company never quite cracked that tough shoe market, and it is gone now. You can’t find these Stingers anywhere. This pair has run a lot of races with me, including my all-time #marathonpr at the @bostonmarathon in 2014. As you can see, they’re still serviceable, even though semi-retired. I brought them out for today’s workout and had a blast running in them!

Somebody was like NOPE lol Aren’t these the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly that they wanted to ban long distance runners from wearing because it was that good? Why would this one voter on @sneakernews website be so harsh on the review? 🤔 The colorway is typical with runners so that ain’t it. Maybe some runners not to happy with this version of the Vaporfly Next. Some runners not to happy with this version. Ya las tengo. Mi esposa me las compró de Navidad. Y yo a ella. O sea que, al final, cada uno acabó comprándose las suyas. Esto de las navidades puede llegar a ser una tomadura de pelo. Y lo de los matrimonios. Y, según algunos, también lo de las Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next.

Los dos las escogimos rosas. Son las mismas que usaron las liebres de Kipchoge en Viena cuando rompió la marca de las dos horas en los 42 y pico de kilómetros. Ella se las probó primero, caminó un poco en la tienda, se subió a una banda y alcanzó a sonreír como si hubiera cometido una pequeña travesura. “Tienes que probarlas”, me recomendó.

Me trajeron las mías y al primer paso esbocé una sonrisa parecida. Ahí, en esas zapatillas, había algo distinto, nuevo y hasta simpático, y de inmediato pensé: “Diablos, soy un canguro”. Mis hijos parecían algo avergonzados mientras yo trotaba ridículamente por la tienda, con ganas de correr y escapar a toda velocidad sin pagar.

“Tal vez empecemos a ver a gente saltando como canguros por las calles en vez de corriendo, ¡nunca se sabe!”, recién comentó Haile Gebrselassie, el rey etíope del atletismo, en una entrevista. “No sé, poner muelles en tus zapatillas de running… no sé hasta dónde llegará la tecnología”.

Solo una vez antes me había sentido tan extraño en unos zapatos. Fue en la escuela y no fue precisamente divertido, sino ridículo. Iba en quinto de primaria y no eran tenis, eran unos botines ortopédicos negros espantosos que tenían unas barras metálicas a los lados para dejar de pisar chueco.

Por más que le insistí a mi mamá que no me mandara con aquellas cosas horribles al colegio, allá fui, y no bastó ni la mitad del recreo para que un idiota de sexto los descubriera y a medio patio gritara entre carcajadas: “¡Miren al ortopédico taorto!”. Fui el hazmerreír.

Calzado Taorto

Taorto es una marca longeva de calzado ortopédico que, para mi desgracia, justo por aquella época empezó a sacar anuncios en radio, televisión y por la ciudad entera. El apodo me duró varios meses, hasta que una mañana, en el mismo patio, al mismo idiota, le propiné una poderosa patada en la espinilla (con mis Taorto, por supuesto).

Recuerdo ese día cómo me sentí orgulloso con mis botines. Toda la escuela los volteaba a ver con respeto. Los Vaporfly no son muy bonitos, pero espero me traigan también alguna victoria. Los voy a estrenar hasta después del 25, en honor a la Navidad y a las promesas, en las que no está mal creer. Just do it.
