It's September 6th. On this day in 1522, one of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s ships, the Victoria, pulled into port at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain, thus completing the first circumnavigation of the globe. The Victoria was commanded by Basque navigator Juan Sebastian de Elcano, who took charge of the vessel when Magellan died in the Philippines in April 1521. It was a long, hard journey to say the least. Of the five ships and 270 men who set sail from Spain on September 20th, 1519, to find a western sea route to the Spice Islands (Indonesia), only Elcano's ship and 21 other men survived the ordeal. Though the expedition was successful in finding a western route to the Spice Islands, it was much longer and more arduous than expected and not commercially viable. Nevertheless, this first circumnavigation has been regarded as a great achievement in seamanship and had a significant impact on our understanding of our planet. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Vasco da Gama's armada of 1502.
The Livro de Armadas shows the twenty ships that sailed in the armada of 1502-3, led by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1460-1524). This was the fourth of the armadas sent by Portugal to consolidate the newly discovered maritime trading route from Europe round Africa to India. Armadas such as this one, which was mostly punitive in intent, helped make Portugal a world power. Vasco da Gama's flagship, the Sao Jeronimo, is at upper centre on the page at left.
