A Headcanon about Verlady:

Day Four - Confession

So I didn't actually have anything planned for Day Four originally, but this suddenly came to me out of nowhere and I've decided to post it now before I lose my nerve. It's not even anything scandalous, I'm just embarrassed by it for some reason 🤭

It's 1am where I am, and I'm busy for most of tomorrow, so hopefully this is OK! It's *technically* Day Four right?

He gasped as their lips separated briefly.

Lady's intense reaction hadn't been a part of Vergil's plan. One minute they'd been sitting on Dante’s sofa, discussing their feelings, and the next, Vergil was pinned against the sticky red leather as Lady frantically ran her hands through his hair.

“Say it again,” Lady demanded.

“Which part?”

Lady pulled him into another deep kiss. “You know which part.”

Vergil craned his neck to look down at her. “It won't mean as much if I say it on command.”

“I've been waiting for you to say it for years. It doesn't matter how many times you say it – I'll still be blown away.” She laid her head on his chest. “Please? I just want to make sure I didn't imagine it.”

“And what if you did?”

“Then I guess I've finally snapped,” Lady mumbled. She sat up again, straddling him. “And I should probably get off you before I end up full of holes.”

Vergil sighed. “Fine,” he conceded. “But only once more. For now.” He cupped her face in his hands and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, then stared into her eyes. He took a deep breath, enjoying watching her squirm impatiently. “Lady…” He smiled faintly. “I love you.”

Vergil thrived on simplicity: erect walls, fortify them, remain untouchable. It was a principle he had lived and breathed and survived by. Enforce it, and he stayed safe. Restore it, and he remained sane. But somehow, nothing ever stayed simple around her . The mission had been straightforward enough: enter, eliminate, leave. Clean, precise—just as he preferred it. However, what should have been a task either of them could have taken in their sleep had first devolved into bickering, then escalated into an argument, and finally culminated into the constant thrum of a headache she had been fueling for the past ten minutes. "We could’ve finished by now if you’d shown some restraint,” he bit out, frustration barely contained as he made his way through crumbling debris and settling dust. “If you had the patience to wait for me to clear the path—" Lady, casually rifling through her bag for another grenade as she stepped over the still-smouldering rubble, glanced back at him, her mismatched eyes gleaming with that distinct, simmering annoyance Vergil had long since learned she reserved for only two things in life: people who didn’t use turn signals, and him.

Verlady Week Day 2

Prompt: Bridal Carry

He’d seen the demon approach her out of the corner of his eye, but he’d been focused on his own battle, and anyway, Lady didn’t get hurt. She wasn’t supposed to get hurt.

She was too careful and crafty for that, even when she was surrounded by demons and firing her guns and artfully dodging hits and proving that all her gymnast training as a high schooler hadn’t gone to waste as an adult decades older.

Vergil didn’t worry about Lady, as a rule. But as he saw the Blade’s edged arms cleaving a gash into her side and drawing back for a final blow she had no hope of dodging—not like this, not hunched over the gaping wound in her ribs and, for a second, reeling with pain and shock—he knew that he would remember this in every moment of every future mission.

This time, there were just the two of them. There would be no legendary devil hunter rushing in with a cocksure laugh to swing the Blade into the air. There would be no angry, kindhearted boy to catch Lady as she fell.

There was just Vergil, on the other side of the street, with his hands covered in demon guts and the lust for blood roiling in his stomach and a poor human’s meager life in his hands, which was, historically, not a safe place to be. And yet he made his decision in a second—less than that. He unsheathed the Yamato, tricked across the street, beheaded the Blade with one fatally precise slice, and then caught the stunned, bleeding woman in his arms just as she began to tumble to the ground.

He lifted her, entirely too aware of the warm stickiness of her bloodied skin against his, the brush of her fingers as she struggled against him for a moment, the sudden tension in her body and the billow of her breath against his neck as she gasped in pain and seemed to finally realize the extent of her wound. Vergil stood in a street in Red Grave City, surrounded by dusting demon corpses, a Devil Arm at his side and a human woman in his arms, and knew with a certain pragmatic dispassion that he had made the right choice (one of the few he had ever made), and that he would keep on making it, for as long as she—Lady, Mary, this human—was in danger.

I think Vergil and Lady just enjoy watching things together, the stars in the night sky, the clouds as they drift across the sky, a storm as it rolls in, watching to see lightning flash across the sky, seeing the rain fall harder and harder and eventually die down, huddled up with hot chocolate watching the snow fall, just watching things.

Note: Here in my city it's already september 9th, so, I want to share this right now. I'll have a busy day but I'm excited for this week!

Song that I associate with Vergil and Lady:

▶ Cirice - Ghost

「 ᴠᴏʟᴜᴍᴇ : ▮▮▮▮▮▮▯▯▯ 」

I relate these two a lot to this song because for me, Vergil and Lady have that potential to be able to understand each other much more than they could with Dante. And, taking away the obvious context in which Ghost unfolds, I basically interpret the song as an unspoken understanding, a deep connection between two individuals.

To begin with, the first two verses of the song:

❝I feel your presence amongst us/ You cannot hide in the darkness❞

I can't help but think directly of DMC3, specifically the fact that Vergil was aware of Lady from the moment she stepped on the Temen-ni-gru. He knew every move, even when Arkham supposedly "took over" the unwanted guest.

Then there are these two verses that are key to me:

❝I can feel the thunder that's breaking in your heart/ I can see through the scars inside you❞

Canonically they didn't interact much, but in that fleeting exchange of words I always seemed to perceive that Vergil somehow saw through Lady, like an open book.

They have some things in common in my opinion, such as that eagerness to be tough in front of others, even in heartbreaking moments. Maybe we didn't see it on stage with Vergil, but we see Lady break down twice during DMC3 and both are when no one is watching her (of course, when Arkham is "dying" she allows it because she thinks he's innocent and didn't count on her father deserving an Oscar for such a good performance).

What more can I say?

Oh, right.

These lines:

❝A candle casting a faint glow/ You and I see eye to eye❞

I can't help but see that in them, especially in this moment:

And finally this:

❝I know your soul is not tainted/ Even though you've been told so❞

More than anything I see a description of Lady in these words. In DMC3 I see many of Lady's actions – having a hard and cold attitude in front of everyone she comes across – as a way to protect herself and cope with everything she lost, behind all that anger and hunger for revenge. She has that attitude of "I've already lost everything... what else can happen to me? What else can I lose?" then she, in her belief, perceives in herself a premature adulthood; Mary, the "pure and innocent" girl, died with her mother.

And it turns out that she doesn't. The good, pure girl showed a sign of life when she forgave Arkham that last time and called him "father" again, in that naïve, but well-intentioned idea of doing justice to Arkham, because she believed that Vergil orchestrated everything.

That's why, half-dismissively, Vergil calls her "foolish girl." But I feel like there's something in his gaze, beyond his lousy insult intent, if it gets to that level. Calling her "girl" has that hidden meaning for me. Beyond deciphering her, he understands her, he's been in that position before.

And with that I conclude my crazy ideas.

I would say "yes, it's cinema", but I'm the only one who see it that way.

Maybe the others would say, "They missed a lunatic from Arkham Asylum."

Lady is struggling with insomnia and discovers that Vergil's bed is the only place she can sleep peacefully - without him in it, of course. Things take a somewhat melancholic turn, however, when she finally asks him where he's been going at night.

Prompt - Sharing A Bed

This took me far too long to write, and I don't even know why... It ended up being longer than I'd planned, and I've been spending days trying to cut it down and make it more streamlined lol. Despite my best efforts I was still working on it today, even though I started it weeks ago.

But! I still have half an hour(ish) to go until midnight in the UK so technically I made it in time! XD

So this isn't based on a @verladyweek prompt or anything, but it still feels relevant because it definitely happened due to all the wonderful Verlady content I've been consuming all week 😆

Basically I just woke up from a crazy DMC related dream, which, amongst other scenes (including Nero accidentally vaporising Vergil with a laser, and 'slicked Vergil hair DLC'), included this gem, which went something a bit like this:

Vergil: *secretly hanging out with Lady in his room*

Dante: *calling from downstairs* Vergil! Are you home? I need to talk to you about something!

Vergil: *groans and slinks downstairs, with many apologies to Lady*

Dante: There you are! OK so listen to this, it's about this demon Nero found...*rambles*

Vergil: *Thinking about Lady and nodding*

*10 mins later*

Dante: So what do you think?

Vergil: *Jolted out of his thoughts* Uh, yes. Sure. Let's go fight it or whatever.

Dante: ...Bro. I just spent the last 10 minutes telling you how awesome Nero looked while killing the thing, were you even listening...?

And yeah, that's basically all I can remember from it lol

Super dumb, but thought it was amusing so now you get forced to enjoy it too 🤣

I didn't think of it in the moment, but now that I wrote my "divine library" version of DMC3 (my day 5 oneshot that I promise I'll share it soon), I'd love it to be a promp in a future Verlady Week. I'd be awesome to read different versions of that moment.

Wip

Note: this little wip has been almost for a month in my keep notes. It came from the original idea I had for my Vxlentine's oneshot, and that oneshot became a bigger AU idea that I couldn't end in time for the event day. I don't know If it'll se the light someday so... here it is:

Let me tonight forget about the tricks of fate upon us.

Let me lose myself in you like there's no tomorrow.

A tomorrow in which I will lose you in one way or another.

Let's pretend a forever in this ephemeral moment.

It may be the final (official) day of @verladyweek 2024, but what a week it's been! My heart is so full 😭

At a rough guess it's been about 16 or 17 years since I started shipping these two fools together and a few years ago I would never have imagined I'd ever have been back in this fandom again, let alone involved in a Vergil/Lady shipping week and not in my wildest dreams could I have seen myself taking part! Even though it was so scary I did it! I couldn't have made it without everyone's support 😭

The biggest thankies go to Sonder for founding and hosting this week. Thank you so much 😭

It's been so much fun and I don't want it to end, but there is so much tasty new stuff to drool over now (plus I still have two fics unfinished soooo Verlady week will still stretch out into the future for me oops 🙃)

I can't claim credit because they were done by my local beautician, but this time I asked for a tiny, small, white heart on my ring fingers against my usual background of "Vergil-blue" as a sweet little reminder of them, because to me - whether they know it or not - Lady will always be Vergil's heart 💙
