I’m never going to get over how good of an adaptation VHSCCs is of the little match girl. I’ve loved the little match girl for years, and when I originally heard they were adapting it like 2 years I was honestly kind of baffled because I had no clue how they were going to make a devastating story like that work, but goddamnit they did it, and they did it SO WELL.

Leaning into the childlike perspective I think was such a good decision because it would have been so easy to lean more into the the tragedy of it all. Like the idea to call heaven Grandmaland is such a weirdly brilliant idea, because of course that’s how a child would rationalize it. She doesn’t know she’s actually dying, all she knows is she’s knowing going somewhere safe with someone she loves. And like on the surface calling it “Grandmaland” seems almost comedic. I remember seeing the original show in Chicago and that line getting a laugh. And the fact that it works on those multiple levels, being something that seems almost funny but when you think about it is incredibly devastating, is just so amazing to me.
