The Masked Singer: S12 E1 (Season Premiere)

Despite a hurricane getting ready to hit North Florida tomorrow (and us here in Central Florida getting effects from the feeder bands, primarily rain, wind gusts, and a heightened risk for severe weather), I’m back with my running commentary as I try to guess which celebrities are underneath the masks this season.

I have not watched a single sneak peek performance in the lead up to this season, and for the first time in a while, I’ll be going into this season pretty much blind.

As always, I am writing these as I watch the episodes and I always post before seeing any unmasking, so don’t take my guesses as spoilers. I am watching on a delay via TiVo, and have done everything to avoid spoilers online.

Let the season begin!

Buffalo 🦬: Not super-tall, they’re about the same height as Nick Cannon. Buffalo’s celebrity connection (“Masked Ambassador”) is Nick Lachey (Piglet 🐷). I see a picture of a football player kneeling or “Tebowing”, so maybe it’s Tim Tebow or someone who knows him? We see pictures of Betty White and Vanna White. He was in two major sitcoms. Wait…there’s two of them! No, three! It’s a herd of Buffalo! Now I think I have an idea who these Buffalo might be! The voices are kind of leading me in the direction of none other than Boyz II Men. The “Ambassador’s Gift” clue is: A crown. Some musical “Kings”, perhaps? Their current lineup has three members, and the kneeling football player could be a reference to their song “On Bended Knee”.

Woodpecker 🐦: Woodpecker’s Masked Ambassador is Jenifer Lewis (“Cleocatra” 🐱). She’s a “mogul”, a “chic CEO”, and friends with Beyoncé. A board reading “Family” and an SAT test sheet. The “Ambassador’s Gift” clue is: A framed picture of a “World Record”. I wasn’t picking up anything with the voice or the clues, so I’m going to consider this one “stumped” for now.

Leaf Sheep 🍃 🐑: Well, this costume is being rolled in on wheels. My first instinct is that it’s a Muppet. Their Masked Ambassador is DeMarcus Ware (“Koala” 🐨). Cowboy seahorse, a quarter, and a guitar pick labeled “#1”. So, I’m gathering this is an NFL quarterback who was a #1 draft pick who played for the Dallas Cowboys. It’s not Terry Bradshaw, he’s already been on the show (and he played for the Steelers). I’m gonna guess it’s either Tony Romo or Troy Aikman. He’ll probably be the first celebrity eliminated, but darn it, we like a trier! His “Ambassador’s Pick” clue is a trophy marked “Hall of Fame”. I’m going with Troy Aikman because he was a Hall of Fame QB who played for the Dallas Cowboys. I can’t remember if he was a #1 draft pick.

Showbird 🦤: It’s a flashy dodo! Their Masked Ambassador is Joel McHale (not an official contestant, but a regular guest judge). Says she was a tomboy and a nerd. A judge’s gavel, so she might have been a judge on a singing competition? I’m not immediately picking up on her voice. Their “Ambassador’s Gift” clue is a bucket of popcorn. I’m also “stumped”. But I think she’s sticking around this week.

Ship ⛵️: Their Masked Ambassador is Jewel (“Queen of Hearts” 👸 ❤️). A clock in the shape of a plane. A “Wanted” sign, and their career started quickly. So I’m guessing somebody who came up around the same time as Jewel. I’m thinking someone from the Lilith Fair set. I don’t quite know if it’s Sarah McLachlan, but the voice is leaning more towards Paula Cole. The “Ambassador’s Gift” clue is a glittery cowboy hat. I’m gonna go with Paula Cole right now, because the cowboy hat makes me think of Paula’s song “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?”. Paula’s in her fifties now and her singing voice might be a little deeper now than it was in the ‘90s, but I think the tone and the higher notes do kinda match.

The third day of our trip had us waking up just outside the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. We drove through it to get to our first destination and got to see buffalo there! 🦬

After crossing into Tennessee, we arrived at Fort Donelson National Battlefield (strap in, there's gonna be quite a few Civil War sites on this trip). At this site, not-yet-president Ulysses S. Grant led a charge via ironclad boats via the Cumberland River to take over Confederate Fort Donelson (more on the ironclads in a future post). This battle ended with Confederate General Buckner (who was actually an old friend of Grant's from West Point) surrendering to Grant at Dover Hotel.

Next up was Shiloh National Military Park where we learned about the battles at Shiloh and Corinth. While this was another Union victory, there were nearly 24,000 casualties here—more than all of the United States' previous wars combined.

That evening we arrived at our beautiful campsite in Mississippi along one of the fingers of a gorgeous lake. Everything was perfect aside from the 94% humidity 🥵

We got hit with a torrential downpour and thunderstorm. After the first stormfront rolled through, we made the split decision to pack everything up at midnight and get to our car. We got everything shoved back in just before the next stormfront rolled through. Then we had to figure out whether we'd spend the night in the car or try to find a hotel in the middle of nowhere.

We ultimately decided to travel a bit further down our route and fortunately found a place to stay... Just took driving ~40 mins through a huge storm 😅🌩️

What only paint can do

To escape boredom, I doodle a baby horse. After a while I notice that it has grown so much that it no longer fits on the paper. Its ears and tail already occupy the table and a significant part of the couch. If it continues to grow at this rate, it will soon be too big for the apartment. I start to sketch a stable, only to notice that a hand that it is not mine is populating it with more horses. They look like my brothers.

My imaginary lover lives in London. We keep in touch through letters exchanged via homing pigeons. We talk openly about anything: my sex life, his sex life and the weather. We are in an open relationship, but even so, it’s hard not to be jealous. When I become too jealous, I remind myself that I can always cheat on him with my husband, and all of a sudden, I calm down.

Cynthia Lummis is a well-known name in the Bitcoin community, the U.S. Senator (R) for the state of Wyoming has been a BTC proponent for a long time. Unlike many of his colleagues, Lummis has taken actions to demonstrate her political position.

In a recent Financial Disclosure shared via Twitter by the handle CongressTrading, Lummis made a $100,000 Bitcoin purchase on August 16th, 2021. Filed on October 7th, the document reveals that the transaction was made via a crypto exchange in the name of Lummis.

The Senator is yet to make an official statement on her recently acquired BTC holdings. According to a report by CNBC, the document was filed with a slight delay; outside the 45 days period granted by the U.S. 2012 STOCK Act.

A representative from the Senator’s office told the mainstream media that the delay in the filing was due to an “error”. The issue was successfully resolved with the U.S. Senate Ethics committee “without penalty”.

The Bitcoin purchase sparked a debate in the crypto community, some users believe the Senator took advantage of the price action at the time to “buy the dip”. Others recommended Lummis to purchase at least 6.15, the mythical figure that started as a joke in the community.

However, other users debated whether or not there was a conflict of interest in U.S. government officials owning Bitcoin due to the incentives to “devalue the dollar to pump their bags”.

In that sense, these users argued that Bitcoin could actually make the government worse by creating more incentives to increase the dollar monetary supply.

Despite the fact that no official statement has been issued by the office of the U.S. Senator, Lummis has defended Bitcoin as an alternative to the Fiat Standard. By putting some of her wealth into the cryptocurrency, the government official is doubling down on what BTC represents for millions of people around the world: transparency, openness, and fairness.

A History Of Standing Up With Bitcoin

It is not without irony that the Twitter handle that reported on Lummis Bitcoin purchase is called CongressTrading. Many U.S. government officials have been accused of using their positions to their financial advantage.

Lummis has been advocating for more financial privacy in the U.S., for more transparency in the government, and for a store of value, such as Bitcoin, to counter inflationary policies coming from the federal agencies in that country.

Lummis was crucial in the fight against the infrastructure bill that seeks to classify almost every entity dealing in cryptocurrencies as a service provider. Thus, requiring them to gather more information on their clients.

Her BTC investment might be far from the billions of dollars poured into Bitcoin by companies such as MicroStrategy and Tesla, but it is one of the most significant gestures made by a U.S. Senator amidst an economic outlook that could negatively impact the world, similar to the 2008 crisis.
