hey aunt asy just wanted to thank you for being so vocal and open when it comes to Queer history and reblogging informative posts about it, as a 24yo bi (and non american at that) it can be disconcerting trying to piece together LGBTQ history, especially coming from a website that's extremely US centric, I stil have a very limited idea of the queer movement within my own country, but knowing about the history of the international movement helps piece some national events together

You’re most welcome! It really is super disconcerting how all the queer history and queer information we tend to see online is US-centric. However, I’m also not really sure what to do about it, because English-language internet is hugely dominated by US culture and US voices so…. yeah. 

Where possible, I try to reblog queer stuff that centres on my country, Australia, or other countries that aren’t the US. 

Something that’s really upsetting to me is that no one in Australia had a problem with ‘queer’ 4 years ago. It was a neutral word to describe the community. Since the rise of neo radfem anti-queer shit courtesy of almost wholly US folks all over English-language internet, that’s been seeping into Ausralia, too. 

I had a really upsetting conversation with the lovely receptionist at one of the locations I work at who is a younger gay man. I said something-something ‘queer’ and he’s like, “Oh, we probably shouldn’t use that word. It might offend people”. How did he hear that? On Facebook. 

Like, I am flat-out horrified not only such an inclusive, powerful word with a strong, inclusive, powerful history is being intentionally sullied by radfem bullshit, but that also that grossest, most toxic parts of US-centric culture has oozed its way out of the US and into MY culture and MY country and is now taking MY words. 

Queer history is mostly word of mouth. When we have young US radfems shouting over non-US people and intentionally spreading false information about our words and our history and acting like the US experience of being queer is the only experience…. dude, idk where we go from here. 

It’s just really sad. 

Anyway, this turned into a rant about how omnipresent US culture and people are on the internet and how that’s damaging and influencing culture in other countries.

as a new fan of DW I've been seeing a lot of old fans complain about 'hey wtf is Chibs doing, I thought they said this year was gonna be a new point for new fans to join, they haven't introduced or explained the doctor or x y z important plot point!' and I'm sure some of those claims have validity but before s11 I had ZERO Doctor Who context aside from "it regenerates" and "it has a companion" and I'm finding it actually a good start for my new sci-fi obsession so idk, it's working for me

I’m always happy to hear how new fans are enjoying this series! I know a few people who are watching DW for the first time too and they seem alright with it so far. 

Obviously they don’t get the deeper implications of certain moments that long-time fans would e.g. why the Doctor warns her new fam about the dangers of travelling with her, why confronting a Dalek is a personal to the Doctor etc. But i don’t think it significantly hurts their enjoyment of the show. 

Honestly some “fans” are unhappy and just want reasons to complain. It’s human nature. We want to find people and ways to justify how we feel about something. Just like how I want to surround myself with people who enjoy the show, there are folks who want to surround themselves with negativity and feel justified in disliking it.

You don’t do a big project without research and I’ll be surprised if the people running this major franchise haven’t done focus group testing on what is or what is not working with new and existing fans.

i got seriously disapointed the new year special didn't get canonically framed like a crazy History Channel alien documentary, bc those voice overs were EXACTLY what made it seem like and I was always expecting to have a random human with a tv controller watching 13th hop around from place to place in the UK to kill a Dalek

And, I know that Specials often use narrative voice overs but I can’t help but wonder too, if the voice narrating the story will be significant in series 12? 

I hope so. I hope they bring up the Order of the Custodians in series 12, since it seems like its an organization now or at least, maybe it’s a small organization comprised of the families of the Custodians?

hi! omg this is amazing! now i’m glad someone got a hold of that post and made it go viral lol. i’ll probably come from a biased standpoint considering, but it’s true nonetheless; roman is just the most wonderful man and human being! also a badass in the ring! he’s what made me fall in love with wwe again after years of not watching and has just been a huge inspiration. and i’m sure you’ll end up falling in love with some of the other wrestle boys and girls too. this fandom can be crazy at times, but can also be the most fun! i’ve made a lot of friends here ^^
