week 10 : Video arts and commercial

I would say both video art and commercial are arts. But what is the difference between both of them?

Video arts

It is an art form that relied on moving picture and audio.

Commercial

Television moving picture or radio broadcast with the goal of broadcasting the product by gaining your attention.

Both video art and commercial have their own respective history. For the aspect of video art, it came into existence in the late 1960 and early 1970. Television professional in the UK started to experiment with a new art form with television and slowly sparks the birth of video arts.

But the existence of commercial came way early than the existence of video arts. The commercial has its own goal of broadcasting their product by gaining your attention with any way possible and hopefully you will buy the product. But on the other hand, video arts doesn’t have any plot or goal of selling the products. Instead, it has more of an abstract approach. This kind of video that just doesn’t seem to make sense but able to make you feel something like an abstract art, that is what makes video art, video art

Some of the examples of video arts that I could list are like Meetings, Bloody Meetings by John Cleese, will Smith or Jamie’s School Dinners: Managing change by Jamie Oliver and not to forget The Art of Selling by Sheridan Smith. These are some video arts I watched but does not seem to enjoy it much.

One example for the commercial I wish to talk about is the Marlboro advertisement around 1970. This advertisement is one of the first lifestyle advertisement. These commercials relate the product with your lifestyle, evoke a certain of feeling which is better than commercial previously made, which is non-commercial. It was this cigarette company that forced to change their strategy in selling their product that totally revolutionized the whole industry of advertising.

“sell an identity, not a product”

I guess I had explained the difference of both video arts and commercial. In a nutshell, video arts does not have a plot, doesn’t make sense and it’s on an aesthetic purpose with more of an abstract art approach. But on the other side, the commercial does not necessarily need a plot but in today advertisement, it usually comes with a plot to strengthen the vibe that rose in you, of course with the goal of selling their product.
