You haven’t really been paying attention to how much time has passed. You’ve been enjoying being curled up in bed with Viik as he tells you all about the book he borrowed from Vex, his deep voice filled with enthusiasm. The story was something about a murder mystery plot and a haunted castle, and he let you read it after he was done with it. You have yet to finish it, but he seemed so excited to talk about it, so you asked him what his favorite part was.

He has a habit of jumping around from plot point to plot point, sometimes getting distracted by details he remembers midstory, but you’re quite content to let him continue uninterrupted. There’s something so beautifully pure about being here with him, arms around him, limbs tangled together, watching his hands punctuate his story as he does his dramatic retelling. It’s a soft and sweet kind of love to just be content here surrounded by the sound of his voice. You wonder how often he gets the chance to just let his thoughts and words run free like this. You make a mental reminder to let him do it more often.

“Okay, so, the butler did the first murder but he was actually possessed by the ghost of the previous owner of the castle that was-,” he gasps and covers his mouth, but you hear a muffled, “Oh Ancestors… I just spoiled the whole thing. I’m sorry…”

“That’s okay, keep going.”

Under Control

Mal reaches her arms to the sky, stretching her aching muscles. Her training is finished for the day, but she still feels restless. Normally she would take Viik to look around the marketplace just like every other evening, but he wasn’t waiting for her after training like he usually does. By now she would have–

The scent of magic fills her lungs. Like the feeling of breathing in cold air after chewing on spearmint. A familiar magic. Viik’s magic.

Her feet are following the trail without a second thought. She follows it into a copse of trees until she sees a figure kneeling in the underbrush.

“Viik,” she approaches and puts a hand on his shoulder. He starts at the sudden contact but doesn’t turn to face her. Instead, he keeps his attention on whatever he’s holding in his shaking hands. Mal lets her hand rest on his back to ground him. She can feel his uneven breathing beneath her palm.

“Deep breaths, Viik.”

It takes a little longer than usual, but eventually, Viik’s breathing evens out. Whatever he’s holding still keeps hold of his attention, and it’s only now that Mal catches a glimpse of the young bird resting calmly in his grasp. It’s uninjured and seems undisturbed by being held.

“It fell out of the nest…”

His voice is quiet, defending his actions like he’s surely in trouble. If their parents found out he would be.

“It’s okay,” she assures as she comes to kneel in front of him, “but you know you aren’t supposed to use your magic.”

He looks up. Viik’s eyes well with tears as blood drips from his nose and onto his lap. Mal takes her sleeve and wipes away the blood, just as she’s had to do before. Startled by her movement, the bird takes flight and disappears into the trees. They both watch it go, Viik with a smile, knowing his magic has been used to help despite the consequences. Mal kneels in front of Viik, and he lets her lift him and carry him piggyback back home instead of making him walk after overexerting himself.

There’s no conversation. No interrogation. Only the resignation that despite being siblings, Mal will never be able to truly understand what her brother must feel about being given a gift that his body can't control. About living amongst the dragons, knowing he’ll never take flight as they do. True understanding may never come, but Mal is stubborn and she decided long ago that she would keep trying regardless. Try like her father didn’t. Not the father she chose, but the one that she sees traces of when she looks in the mirror. Try so that she can overcome the fear of becoming poisoned with hate and power like him. Try to keep her emotions contained so they can't hurt anyone like his did. What if history repeats itself?

No, her heart is sold on protecting her people, no matter how much dragon blood they do or don’t have.

“Hey, Mal?”

“Hm?”

“Promise you won’t tell our parents about this?”

“Only if you promise to take better care of yourself.”

POTIONS: fuck ton of health & stamina potions bc this idiot never learned restoration or alteration cure disease potions fortify carry weight potions INVENTORY: lots of stolen items that he's quick to pawn off, typically jewelry & gemstones stolen food & mead torch, journal, ink pen, lock picks, trip wires, bed roll BACKSTORY: - grew up in small fishing village on the outskirts of riften hold. mother was very neglectful & not good to him. cynic had to learn from an early age to survive on his own, which lead to him being a good sneak & pickpocket. - home was ransacked by bandits & he was captured as a boy. they kept him alive because he proved to be a slippery little fox that could be useful for future heists - bandit leader threw him into a pit full of saber cats to test his strength durability, this is how cynic got his scars. he prevailed but just barely. as a reward the leader tossed cynic his mother's kynareth amulet - ran with the bandits for a few years, they taught him everything he knows. they would often throw him into suicide missions and other challenging situations because they didnt want to do it themselves, cynic had no choice but to swallow his fear if he wished to survive. - at one point he gets captured by the whiterun guards and thrown into dragonskeep. it is there where he comes across the ring of khajiit and hears the voice of mephala, daedric prince of manipulation & sower of discord begin to speak to him. she reveals that the bandit leader betrayed him and is responsible for his capture, and that said bandits had no intention to come looking for him. rightfully angry, cynic donned the ring of khajiit and used his wits to break out of prison & made his way back to the bandit camp. begrudgingly welcomed back with open arms, cynic waited until night fall before slaying every single bandit in their sleep & proceeding to go his own way as a rogue thief. - eventually discovers that he is dragonborn, winds up using these gifts for his own gain. mephala also still occasionally speaks to him because she's 👀 @ the fact that he's dragonborn & wants him to become her new champion. cynic keeps leaving her on read.
