Summary: Ubbe does not like the way someone else has been looking at you
─━━━━━━⊱❉⊰━━━━━━─
“Is this a joke?”
Ubbe sniffed when he heard your words, with a bit of irritation. He sat at a chair in the corner of the room you both shared in the palace of Wessex, where you now lived under the protection of King Alfred. He kept his bright blue eyes in the stone cold ground and yet, you know what he was thinking about. He had said it instants ago.
“No, it is not a joke, (Y/N)” he still couldn’t face you as he said such thing. He moved his right hand constantly, opening and closing it over and over again. He was nervous, thoughtful. “I mean it when I say that he wants you. I have seen it in his eyes” Ubbe finally raised his eyes and focused them on yours. “He is always around you, hovering”
“And you think that I want him too?” you questioned, taking a few steps towards him as you did so. The expression on your face was enough to make him feel a bit ashamed. “You think that I will, what? Be seduced by this Christian Bishop?”
“I don’t…” he started, but then stopped and sighted heavily. “I am not saying you will let yourself be seduced by him. I just think that he is always too close” he looked down at his hands for a moment before continuing. “To speak the truth, I think I am in fact just afraid to loose you”
“You and your jealousy” you smiled, closing the distance between you two. You and Ubbe had been a couple for quite a while now and in rare occasions, he would get jealous enough to mention it to you. That, had been one of those situations. Still smiling at him you sat on his lap, placing each of your legs on the sides of his waist and passed your arms around his neck, bringing your faces closer. “You have to put it in your mind that I want nobody but you, Ubbe, son of Ragnar Lothbrok”
He sighted and nodded his head, agreeing. He felt stupid for being jealous since he knew you would never betray him but still, he couldn’t help it. Not when he saw the clear desire the other man had in his eyes when he looked at you. “I am sorry”
“It is alright” you placed one of your hands in his cheek and caressed his hot skin there as your expreesion turned into a thoughtful one. “I saw you and Torvi training in the royal villa today. You two looked very… close”
Ubbe’s lips were curved up in a small smile as he thought about what your words meant. “Are you jealous?” he asked, placing his hands on your thighs.
“Yes” you admitted, shrugging. It was not very common for you to feel jealous too but Torvi… you knew that she and Ubbe had shared a time together as lovers right after her relationship with Bjorn was ended. Truth was, the was one of the few people who could make you feel insecure. “A little bit, yes. Torvi is an astonishing woman and shieldmaiden. But I know you will not leave me for her, as well as I will not leave you for the Christian Bishop” the anger that crossed his features made you chuckle for a moment.
“Good” Ubbe leaned in into your touch on his face. He kept staring at you for a long moment in silence, just admiring you and thinking about how lucky he was for having you right there, with him when you probably could have any person you ever wanted. He had been blessed by the Gods on the day you had agreed to share your life with him. “I love you, (Y/N)”
You gave him a quick, meaningful kiss on the lips. “I love you too”
You both felt silent again, just enjoying each other’s presence and caring, admiring, until he finally spoke again between your shared kisses. “If Heahmund ever gets too close and make you umconfortable…”
You stopped kissing him and looked deep into his eyes. “I will break his teeth myself”
Ubbe chuckled and his grip got tighter in your thighs as he tried to bring you even closer, which was not physically possible. “That’s my lover”

Part2
You were always there for him when he needed. You have been with Ivar in every situation since you met him. You did not care what others said about him, you did not mind about the warnings.
“It’s Ivar, he’s selfish and bad.” they said. But you never heard them. You faced Margrethe when she made gossip about him. You fought with everyone who tried to despise him in some way. You comforted him when Sigurd died. You were too blind to see, too passionate to realize that everyone was right. Less you.
When Ivar become the king was a great victory, you were happy for him. Ivar had achieved greatness as he wished. Even in the midst of all the chaos that had happened you were happy. You understood why he had fought a war with Ubbe and Bjorn. Even if it hurt you to stay on the opposite side of your friends, you understood. And you accepted, because what mattered was that you and Ivar were together. Or was that what you thought.
But everything changed when she appeared. Who was she anyway? You had never seen her before and now she was standing next to Ivar, talking and smiling. Later that day Ivar announced that he would marry Freydis and your heart broke into a thousand pieces. He did not even bother to break up with you. Not that you had named what you two had. But you were always beside him.
“Are you okay?” Hvitserk asked as you stepped out of yours reverie.
“I’m fine.” You replied automatically, looking away from Ivar.
The people around celebrated the news with fervor. Everyone was happy that their new king would have a queen. You ran away feeling smothered.
×××××××××××××××××
The days passed and neither you nor Ivar talked about it. You went back to sleep in your cottage, in your bed. Feeling lonely again after years. Feeling betrayed and hurt. But you would not have the pleasure of hearing him complain. Every day he asked you about your mood. “Why so quiet?” “Why so distant?” The provocative blue eyes stared at you in defiance. He wanted you to question him just so he could show his power to you. But you would not give him the pleasure of hurt you more.
Hvitserk was not happy with his brother either, and you could not blame him. Ivar is an egocentric and totally selfish king. He lived talking about himself as if the whole universe had planned his reign.
“Hvitserk, I know you’re in mourning, but you should drink less.” You said softly before sitting down next to him.
“She was frail and helpless and he killed her. For nothing.” he whispered in a choked voice as he stared at you with sad, tired eyes.
“I know. I’m sorry.” You whispered, putting your hand on the top of his. Hvitserk is your friend, not as close as Ubbe and Bjorn, but you care about him. Seeing him in pain was making you sadder.
“He hurt you too. You do not drink like I do, but you suffer like me.”
×××××××××××××××××
Days passed and your friendship with Hvitserk increased. You two talked and spent more time together. Hvitserk stopped drinking heavily and you stopped crying every time you went to sleep. Things were getting better as much as possible. Ivar was still Ivar, he still stared at you with a smug, defiant look. He still irritated Hvitserk.
The dinners in the great hall had become far more exciting for the gossip-makers. The brothers were always arguing about something and even those who pretended not to see were watching them closely. Ivar shouted expecting to be heard and not questioned, but Hvitserk questioned him. He would respond with truths Ivar did not want to hear, making clear his place and making it clear he was not going to leave.
“Are you going to kill me next?” Hvitserk asked, staring at Ivar. They were staring at each other for too long. You felt your heart jump in your chest. Ivar was capable; he would kill Hvitserk if he wanted to. He had killed a brother before and no one questioned him. No one would question now that he is king. Your breath caught in your throat, and you could not breathe again until you saw Hvitserk come out of the room safely.
You got up from the table, and before leaving you stared at Ivar with disgust. Had he always been like this and you had never seen?
“Hvitserk!” You shouted before following him into an alley.
“Are you okay?” You asked worried still feeling the tension of the moment.
“Sometimes I feel like I want to kill him.” he whispered angrily, closing his eyes.
“I know, I feel it sometimes, too.” You admitted it before you raised your hand and caressed his face. It was a gesture of innocent and unpretentious tenderness, but somehow at that moment you were connected.
Hvitserk opened his eyes and stared at you in silence. All the anger fading from looking. Did you approach first or was it him? It did not matter, all you could feel was Hvitserk’s lips against yours. Soft, warm and receptive. The arms around your body were familiarly welcoming. Everything would have been perfect if the touches did not remember Ivar’s. You were not in his arms, but with your eyes closed all you could feel were Ivar’s hands passing through your body.
“Sorry, I cannot do this.” You whispered breathlessly after pushing way Hvitserk and start running away.
××××××××××××
You felt your body wake up slowly. You were never a morning person so you always slept heavy and woke up very slowly. Your eyes were open, still with traces of sleep and you stared at the ceiling. As you turned to the side your heart began to beat like crazy inside the chest.
“Did you sleep well?” Ivar asked quietly. He was sitting in a chair near a window.
“What are you doing here?” You asked suspiciously. Ever since Ivar had left you, he had never visited you again. Or approach you outside the great hall.
“I confess I was surprised to find you alone.” He replied with disdain totally ignoring your previous question. Ivar took his crutch and stood up walking toward your bed. The movement made you sits down, pulling the furs against your body.
You had never been afraid of Ivar, after all he was always good to you. He had a difficult personality and most of the time was grumpy, but he never even raised his voice to you. But you knew how cruel he could be to the ones who annoyed him. And now he was sitting on your bed watching you as if he could burn you alive.
“Did you enjoy having sex with my brother?” Ivar asked in a voice filled with poison. The cold blue eyes watched you in fury.
“What?” You asked in a shaky voice. Confusion scattered all over your face.
“Don’t make a fool of yourself, y / n. It doesn’t fit you.” He yelled as he approached you and held your hair tightly. The movement made you tumbles forward and let out a grunt of pain.
“Ivar, what are you doing?” You asked frightened, taking his hand and trying to pull it away.
“You are a slut.” He pulled you closer and whispered against your ear. “Did you really think you were going to hang out with my brother on the streets in my kingdom and I would not know?” His big hand gripped your jaw forcing you to stare at him.
You frowned uncomprehendingly. Was he jealous? No, he did not have that right. Not after all he did.
“I was not trying to hide.” You said irritably. Anger boiling in your veins. Once again you tried to push him away without success.
The cheeky reply did not please him. His icy blue eyes now seemed to burn you alive. He was angry and Ivar in anger was never good.
You expected him to explode screaming and beating at everything around you, but he just kept looking at you and when he spoke his voice was quiet and calm.
“Did you like it?” He asked pulling your hair between his fingers, not to hurt you, just to tease.
“Ivar no-” you let out a loud sigh as you felt his warm breath against your mouth.
“Or did you imagine that I was touching you? I know you did it before, I bet you still does.” He whispered presumptuously.
You cursed yourself for telling him how you felt. How you imagined him touching you before you were together. Like all the men you kissed, you imagined he was kissing you.
“I did not.” You said angrily, pushing his chest to pull him away. But it was useless, he was much stronger than you.
“You lie.” He chuckled, running a hand through your hair. Somehow he seemed pleased to see the effect he still had on you. “I bet you think of me every day.”
“I’m tired of begging you to love me, Ivar.” You whispered feeling the warm tears fill your eyes.
Ivar grimaced before letting go of your hair and leaving a small fondling on the top of your head. He watched you for a few seconds in silence before leaning on his crutch and getting up.
“Stay away from him.” Ivar said as he walked in slow steps out of your room.
“You’re not my owner; I can talk to whomever I want.” You shouted. Anger overflowing your eyes.
“Do not be so sure, honey.” He said before turning quickly to look at you. “Stay away from him or I’ll kill him.”
“You cannot do-” You whispered sense feeling your body tremble with anger and fear.
“I can do whatever I want. If I see you with him again I’ll kill him, do you understand?” His tone was quiet, but you knew there was no calm in it.
When you did not answer, he spoke again. “You understood, and / n?”
“Yes.” You whispered, staring at the skins, refusing to look at it.
×××××××××××××××
You spent half the day scared, locked in your cottage not knowing what to do. After Ivar left you cried all the tears you had not cried for days. You did not want to be a coward and give in to any whim of Ivar. He was not your master, he had no right to command in your life. He had no right to try to get you away from Hvitserk. But now he was the king, and you knew it gave him many advantages.
When the night arrived, you went to the great hall as usual. It was already full of people eating and drinking.
Ivar sat on his throne with Freydis at his side. His eyes followed you everywhere you went; every move you made was captured by him.
You noticed his jaw clench as Hvitserk approached you.
“Where have you been? You disappeared all day.” Hvitserk said worriedly. The green eyes went through your body for some indication of injury.
“I just wanted to be alone, that’s all.” You replied reassuringly. But you were not quiet yourself. You could feel Ivar’s gaze on you.
“Are you sure you’re okay? You seem tense.” He questioned again, suspicious.
“I am fine. Let’s get a beer.” You said before you passed him toward some thrall that might serve you.
Even talking to everyone around you, you could still feel Ivar watching you from afar. He had not approached or tried to keep some contact, but somehow you knew he would do soon. You could almost feel his anger in the air.
“Y / n, you’re quiet all night.” Hvitserk approached you and whispered against your ear.
“I told you I’m fine, Hvitserk.” You almost jumped with sudden approach.
You could see that he had not believed it but decided to let it go.
After a few minutes Freydis approached the two of you and asked to be followed. You took a deep breath and did as she asked. She walked to Ivar who was now sitting alone at a table a little further away from the other people. She sat down next to him and he caught her hand against his before placing a few kisses on her fingers.
“What do you want, brother?” Hvitserk asked as he sat down in the chair in front of Ivar. You sat down beside Hvitserk in silence. Your heart beat like a drum on your chest. Your hands were sweating with nervous at what he was about to bring.
“I have wonderful news, great news.” Ivar said with a smile on his face.
“Great. I would love to hear good news.” Hvitserk said without enthusiasm.
Even without really being interested in what Ivar had to say, Hvitserk listened as he told how they family was a descendant of the Gods and how he suffered because he was born differently. And how Freydis showed how special he was. Like he was a God.
You did not understood why he had called you and Hvitserk there to tell you all this. Until he said. “And to celebrate, we will have a feast and we will invite everyone of Kattegat!” His excitement was almost manic.
“And we will make a sacrifice dedicated to my fellow gods, welcome me into the family of the Aesir!” He began to explain with excessive enthusiasm. Deep down you knew it would take him some excuse to hurt Hvitserk.
“But it must be an important sacrifice. It must be someone the gods will have heard of. Someone that all the people will have heard of. Someone…” He continued to talk without stopping until he began to stare at Hvitserk with a pretentious look.
You swallowed, feeling your hands shake.
Ivar was saying with certainty that he is intended to put Hvitserk as a sacrifice.
“You don’t know what you’re saying, Brother.” Hvitserk whispered, not believing what he had just heard.
Ivar looked from his brother to you, his blue eyes gleaming with presumption. You breathed deep before you waved, knowing that if you did not get away from Hvitserk, Ivar would kill him and would still find a way to make a big scene in his favor.

Ivar might break a bone but he will never break a promise. And he proved it to you one more time when he married you as soon as he became King of Kattegat. The two of you were the perfect opposite, but it was undeniable that you were perfectly completing each other. You always thought that your live truly began the day you met Ivar. You used to be a slave in Sweden until the day the Queen made you a Free Woman after you saved her son’s life. You grown up fascinating by the stories of Ragnar Lothbrok the poets told during feasts, so the first thing you did to start your new life was taking a boat to Kattegat. It didn’t take long for the people to notice your arrival. You were a beautiful young woman with a joyful and outgoing personality. Just like it didn’t take long for you to meet the moody cripple prince. What brought the two of you together was your admiration for Ragnar and your love for the Gods. Or maybe it was Floki… The boat builder took you under his wing immediately, as it was the first time he met someone who loved the Gods as much as he did. And you knew that he played the matchmaker between you and Ivar several times, but you were truly grateful for that. And so was Ivar. You always were an unfailing support to him, especially in the hardest time of his life. You even made him discover his sweet side. Ivar promised to marry you a few days after the death of his brother Sigurd, and that when he will take back Kattegat from Lagertha. And he did.
A marriage changes people life, that’s a fact. But it changed yours doubly. It was one of the biggest celebration you ever attended. People came from all Norway and even Sweden to celebrate your union with Ivar. After all, everybody wanted to get on his good side. “I am happy, Y/N. And that, for the first time in my life. I have avenged my Mother’s death. I am King. And I am married to the love of my life.” Ivar said to you during the feast, kissing your hand tenderly. The smile who was on your face all day became even bigger at your husband’s sweet words. “I am happy too, Ivar.” You assured him before gently caressing one of his cheeks. “I know the Gods will bless us with many children.” His words made you bite your lips instantly. It was something that a really few people knew, but Ivar always wanted to be a father. And he was convinced that you were the only one who could give him children. “Well, my love…” You started, leaning towards him while your hand was still on his cheek. “What if They already bless us with one?” You confessed to him, making him suddenly confused. Ivar took a few minutes to be sure that he really understood what you just said to him. He was looking deeply into your eyes before an uncontrollable little laugh escaped him. “You… You are with child?” Ivar asked you and you nodded, still smiling at him. He made you stand up from your chair to carefully put one of his hands on your womb. Another tender kiss was drop on this part of your body before Ivar raised up his horn of mead. “People of Kattegat! Tonight we are celebrating two things. My wedding. But also the fact that my wife, your Queen, is with child!” He shouted proudly and everyone in the Great Hall hailed with excitement. You knew Ivar for many years now, but you never saw a smile that big and bright on his face before.
During your pregnancy, Ivar never left your side. He was even more protective with you than before. And of course, he made sure that you didn’t lack or want anything. But with the joy also came the worries. At every sickness or pain, Ivar feared that you lost the baby. Or that it was a sign that your child will have his skeletal condition. It almost became obsessional; he went to the Seer at least once a day in case the wise one saw something. And countless were the nights Ivar didn’t sleep just to look at your womb. But his favourite months were probably the last ones, where he could feel your baby kicking. “He is strong.” You said playfully while Ivar laughed after he felt your child moving as he spoke to him. “He?” He repeated suddenly, surprised by the words who came out of your mouth. Ivar then straightened up so he could sit next to you on the bed. “How do you know it will be a boy?” He asked you, his beautiful ocean eyes alternated between you and your perfectly round belly. “I just know. I will give you a son, Ivar The Boneless.” Your words sounded like a promise to him, and he couldn’t help but smile and kiss your lips passionately.
Less than a mouth later, you woke up with your bed wet and in a terrible pain. “Ivar!” You screamed loudly from your room, even though you knew he was sitting near the boats like every morning since he was the King of Kattegat, it helped him clear his mind for the day he once said to you. But when the wind carried the sound of your voice to him, Ivar immediately raised his head. His heart started pounding crazily in his chest, he knew it could only mean one thing: the baby was coming. He hurried to your room just like the slaves and the healers. Ivar sat on the bed next to you, one of his arms around your shoulder and your hand in his. “I cannot do it, Ivar. It is too painful.” You said to your husband, almost in tears. “Of course you can do it. I believe in you, Y/N.” He encouraged you before you pushed again, squeezing his hand. Even if he tried to hide it, Ivar was scared. Fearing the worst for you and the baby. Seeing you in so much pain broke him. He was powerless, and he hated that. Ivar screamed with you. Wiped your forehead. And kissed your temple to reassure you. Until you both finally heard clear and strong cries. Ivar slowly released his grip on you when the healer came with your child. She smiled at the two of you before giving him carefully the beautiful and perfectly healthy baby she was holding. “It is… It is a boy. I have a son.” Ivar said with emotion, his eyes locked on your child. “It told you I will give you a son.” You responded, still out of breath and exhausted. You tenderly caressed your child’s cheek before looking up at Ivar. When your eyes met, you smiled at each other with joy. “Thank you.” He whispered before kissing your lips with all the love he had for you.

Power is dangerous. These are the words of the Gods. But that power, that danger, is everything. It lives in an army that will protect my people and my rule. My son, my legacy, has become the bravest of warriors. I listen silently to the ramblings of men. Those who dream of danger may awake to death. But life must be lived to the fullest before it is over. I embrace the idea of life and death. For I am not the one in charge of my fate. The gods have already written my story. Victory or Valhalla.
