What's his family like?

The Osmanoğlu family (on his father side) is composed by direct descentants from the House of Osman. When the Ottoman Empire fell, his grandfather Sehzade Osman was exiled in the UK with his family, then moved to the United States, where he married and lived most of his life. Most of his relatives live in Germany, UK or USA, but they still gather every year for festivities. All Osmanoğlu members follow Muslim traditions, but living in western countries made them inclined to a modern lifestyle.

The Doğan family (on his mother side), however, is more traditional. Mostly composed by women, they live in the same neighborhood and gather around at least twice per month. Filthy rich, pragmatic and meddlesome, they often interfere on younger relatives career choices, friendships and relationships, calling family meetings and interventions whenever they see fit. Though Hamid loves his mother and aunts dearly, their intrusive habits are among the reasons why he moved out of his family's house and doesn't have plans to live permanently in Turkiye again.

But his all time favourites are period dramas (Magnificent Century, Magnificent Century: Kösem, The Great Seljuks: Guardians of Justice, Kuruluş Osman, Reign, The Tudors, The Spanish Princess...), He is also into K-Drama and Chinese drama because of Daphne and his sisters, but he only watches with them.

Biggest guilty pleasure:

watching Daphne's trashy TV reality shows while eating greasy food. He's not entirely ashamed of the greasy food and says it motivates him to exercise more in the next day, but will blantantly deny liking Love Island, Love is Blind and Say Yes To The Dress.

Sweet or savoury?

Normally he says both, but when push comes to shove, he'll choose savoury.

THE BIO

Latif was a name to be proud of. It had been a name that was revered all across the Divine Forest. A noble family that had honor and respect. That was until they decided to sacrifice one of the lesser members of said family to save the rest of the realm. Iris had always felt that the Latifs were cowards, even at a young age. She watched as the rulers of the realm has allowed so many passage in and made deals with so many all for the sake of their safety. As soon as the vampires came, they easily gave up one of their own. They made a deal with them to have one of their own for the safety of the others. Iris was that unlucky one. At the age of twenty, she was thrust into the hands of vampires and taken from the realm that she called home. 

It was at first, a simple task, her blood was needed to create talismans that would allow vampires to walk in the daylight. They were nice to her, for the most part, in a way that a captor that needed their victim alive would be. At times they forgot to feed her. Those that didn’t need to eat often forgot meals were necessary until she reminded them, there were others that fed from her. Iris sometimes fought them and other times she was far too exhausted. There were days when she simply allowed them to feed from her until she passed out, hoping that this time perhaps she wouldn’t wake. 

It wasn’t until she met a guard one that showed her compassion, taking her from where she was being held in an airtight room that wouldn’t allow for her to become intangible and allowing her freedom to roam. Iris could hear his thoughts and feel his emotions, his feelings for her mirrored her own. They were True Mates. Being True Mates hadn’t meant much to the man as he was still one of those that aided in her capture. He thought that being mates meant that he was entitled to her body, while the other vampires were entitled to her blood. Iris had never felt more alone and lost in her life than when she was held in captivity. 

Their mate bond had broken after the vampire had violated her body, but he’d left her with a lasting present. The gift of a child. In a realm where she felt alone, where her abilities didn’t work because she felt so much heartbreak that she could barely function, she was with child. Of course she’d been forced to marry since she’d provided the man an heir. All the while her duties had remained to be essentially a blood bag for all that eventually needed daylight talismans. Iris was emotionally in agony, each day worried about the sweet baby growing inside her. This was no way for her to live, and it was no way to raise a child. When she was alone, she often caressed her belly, promising the child that she would in fact do all that she could for him a better life. 

One thing had been apparent, her husband had no want to do anything with the child, and Iris would be damned if her son ever grew up knowing that he was unloved or uncared about. When she gave birth, as exhausted as she was, she never let Viggo out of her sight. He stayed in her arms no matter what. She never handed him to anyone she didn’t trust. The two always had what they needed, but she couldn’t allow the monster that aided in the making of her son to warp his mind and poison him against her. 

She hadn’t been a heartbroken woman anymore after the birth of her son. Her love for him had rejuvenated her and her abilities. Once they did, she made sure to kill the man that called himself her husband, making it look like an attack on the family. They had no idea she was back to full strength. Iris stayed in Northland gaining her strength, and planning her escape. She wanted her son to soak up all of the information on his hybrid powers on the side of being a vampire. She needed him to gain his own strength as she taught him on the Nymph side of things. Iris had spent forty years in the Northland Realm, thirty of which she watched her son grow into a man, but she always made certain to tell him of their home. Of their escape. While Viggo never felt like a prisoner in Northland, Iris always did. 

Iris had some help in her escape, unexpected allies, helping her leave her personal hell far behind. Once they did finally make it back to the Divine Forest, Iris found that they’d given her the nickname The Lost Princess. It was a name that was more insulting than it was helpful. They’d acted as if she was lost in the Northland Realm rather than handed over without her own consent. They rejoiced in her return and awed over her son as if they hadn’t sentenced her to being drained and raped for decades. Everyone made it seem as though she was brave for saving the Realm when she had no choice. 

It was at that moment that Iris decided that there was no way this could happen to anyone else. All she saw was red and a rage built inside of her growing every day. Those allies that had helped her escape, she called on again to aid her in the long game to get the throne. While she did come from the line of ruling family, she was so far down in succession that she would never have the throne, so she killed everyone in her path over a century. It was rumored and foretold that there was a curse on the Latif family, causing the ruling family member to die well before their time. Iris had been strategic about those deaths, and even spreading the rumors. 

It was a century later that she finally took the throne. The last of her family line is gone, leaving her and her son to carry it on. Iris sat on the throne as goddess divine, and she had nothing but revenge on her mind. While she had exacted her revenge on her family, next up was the vampires. They had a good relationship for now, but Iris was ready to destroy everything they ever built. While strengthening the Divine Forest into a Realm that was revered and respected throughout Lume Noua.

Loenen Pavilion offers space to rest and reflect in Dutch war cemetery

Kaan Architecten has built a pavilion to commemorate Dutch victims of the second world war, with thickset walls that strategically frame views of the trees and sky.

Located in the village of Loenen, the building sits between two graveyards – the Loenen National War Cemetery and the new National Veterans Cemetery.

Loenen Pavilion is situated in between a war cemetery and a veterans cemetery

Kaan Architecten's aim was to give visitors a space for rest and contemplation, with a building that embodies both openness and enclosure.

With its stone-clad walls and heavy concrete roof, Loenen Pavilion seeks to create a close relationship between architecture and landscape, by creating framed apertures of the birch and pine trees that surround.

Some walls fold outwards at the base, creating informal benches around the building's perimeter.

The building is designed to create enclosure, but also to feel open

"The serene atmosphere and lack of intrusiveness have been achieved by sensitive architectural gestures, proposing an intimate yet open and inviting building, obscured by tree trunks yet in clear view," said Kaan Architecten.

"Strategically placed, natural stone-clad walls stretching from floor to ceiling accentuate the alternation between open and closed."

The concrete roof emphasises the building's horizontality

Loenen National War Cemetery was designed by landscape architect Daniel Haspels shortly after the end of the war.

Part of his concept was to avoid vertical elements that would interrupt the view of trees, as a way of maintaining a peaceful outlook. This meant that gravestones were laid flat rather than upright.

Strategically placed apertures frame views of the trees and sky

The pavilion follows this approach; in every spatial composition, the walls are designed to feel secondary to the floor and roof slabs. This effect is emphasised by the contrast in materials – the lightness of the concrete compared with the black of the stone.

"By masterfully directing the sightlines inward, outward, and through, [we] maintained the fragile aura of light and tranquillity already imbued in the National War Cemetery," said Kaan Architecten.

Stone-clad walls integrate seating areas

The building is designed to welcome individuals and small groups visiting the cemeteries but also serves other purposes.

There is an auditorium, used for assemblies and funeral services, and a gallery for exhibitions and presentations. For larger events, these rooms can be combined to create space for up to 200 people. There is also a room for condolences.

Glazing in the auditorium allows the landscape to become the backdrop

In each of these spaces, glazing deliberately directs views in a certain direction.

In the auditorium, a window wall allows the landscape to become the backdrop to any service. Similarly, the condolences room offers two different viewpoints – one facing the war cemetery and another facing the veteran's cemetery.

In the same spirit, services are as discrete as possible. Integrated ventilation systems and underfloor heating prevent the need for visible distractions.

Kaan Architecten is led by architects Kees Kaan, Vincent Panhuysen and Dikkie Scipio.

The studio has a history of producing commemorative architecture, with past examples including the Crematorium Siesegem in Belgium. This project, commissioned by the Netherlands War Graves Foundation, builds on that expertise.

The aim was to maintain "the fragile aura of light and tranquillity"

"The distinguished yet subtle Loenen Pavilion architecturally enriches the National War Cemetery, providing a reinvigorated place of honour and consolation, while allowing the forest to be the guide," added the studio.

July Birthstone and Flowers

Regal Ruby

Ruby, the July birthstone, symbolizes love, devotion, passion, and success.

The gem gets its name from the Latin rubeous, meaning “red.”  Ruby is a form of corundum, with chromium giving it its distinctive red color. (Corundum in any color other than red is a sapphire.) The corundum stones are the second hardest gems. Rubies from Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) are especially sought after, although excellent examples are also found in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Tanzania, Kenya, Madagascar, and Afghanistan.

Popular with royalty, rubies have been treasured for centuries. In the account of his travels published in 1300, explorer and trader Marco Polo told this story of a magnificent ruby owned by the King of Seilan, much desired by the Kublai Khan:

“And the King of this Island possesses a ruby which is the finest and biggest in the world; I will tell you what it is like. It is about a palm in length, and as thick as a man's arm; to look at, it is the most resplendent object upon earth; it is quite free from flaw and as red as fire. Its value is so great that a price for it in money could hardly be named at all. You must know that the Great Kaan sent an embassy and begged the King as a favour greatly desired by him to sell him this ruby, offering to give for it the ransom of a city, or in fact what the King would. But the King replied that on no account whatever would he sell it, for it had come to him from his ancestors.”

Larkspur and Water Lily

The larkspur and the water lily are the birth month flowers for July.

The common name "larkspur" is shared between perennial Delphinium species and annual species of the genus Consolida.The flower’s spur is said to resemble the claw of a lark. Popular in cottage or English style gardens, they are known for their showy spikes of blue, purple, pink or  white flowers, and for attracting butterflies. Larkspur stands for strong love, although different colors can have different meanings. 

In Greek mythology, larkspur sprang from the blood of Ajax. Larkspur are mentioned by many poets, including Alfred Lord Tennyson (“Maud”), and Edna St. Vincent Millay (”Justice Denied in Massachusetts”).

Water lily is the common name for a family of flowering plants called Nymphaeaceae, found around the globe in temperate and tropical climates. 

Water lily represents purity and majesty. And, as the The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes, they frequently also have a practical, protective purpose: “Aside from being lovely in their own right, water lilies are often used in ponds to deter the growth of algae and to shade and cool the water for resident fish and frogs.”

The Egyptian lotus is a white water lily. The blue water lily or sacred blue lotus was important in ancient Egyptian culture, depicted in art and used for medicinal and religious purposes.

The lotus is a Buddhist symbol of purity, for the long stem flowers seem to float above muddy waters representing earthly attachment and desire. Many writers have used this flower as a metaphor for rising above circumstances. Suzy Kassem wrote:

“Whenever you should doubt your self-worth, remember the lotus flower. Even though it plunges to life from beneath the mud, it does not allow the dirt that surrounds it to affect its growth or beauty.”

Water lilies are featured in the 1896 paining Hylas and the Nymphs by the English Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse,

In latter part of his life, French Impressionist painter Claude Monet created approximately 250 paintings of water lilies. To this day there is a water lily pond in the famous flower garden at his home in Giverny.

1908 E. Nash postcard for July birthdays. The word “July” does not appear.

Although larkspur and water lily are the July birth month flowers today, the 1908 E. Nash postcard for July depicts a ruby set in gold and red carnations, with the signature “guiding star: of this series shining down from the upper right corner. The verse reads: 

Thy flower is the Carnation, A token of sweet truth, The Ruby is a spark of love, Sent from Heaven to happy youth. Thy stars lustrous rays Turn Nights into Days.

The bottom of the card is emblazoned ‘BIRTHDAY GREETINGS,” but the word July goes not appear.

A similar 1910 postcard using the same symbols but not from E. Nash also omits the word July. (It  appears to be a “copycat” card, from the star to the flower, gem, and verse.) It reads:

Carnation is thy birthday flower Of truth that’s sweet, the token, By the Ruby Heaven’s spark of love To happy youth is spoken Thy star still sparkling golden bright, Makes happy day from doleful night.

This 1910 postcard for July birthdays is not by E. Nash. It is from a “copycat” series, using the same symbols and very similar verse, and even failing to use the month’s name!

My maternal grandmother, Bianca Marie-Clarisse, was born in July. Happy birthday to all July babies!
