accidental encounter ✮ k. cooney-cross
Tumblr media
pairing: kyra cooney-cross x reader
summary: in which kyra cooney-cross bumps into the younger sister of her team mate, how does their story blossom?
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ⋆✦⋆ ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
you were walking on the streets of milton, brisbane. your bodyguard and one of your closest friends, archie followed behind you. he was dressed in a black tux, that had a matching vest, and tie. it was the day of the bronze match, between sweden and australia.
you had your schedule cleared, as you missed a few of your sister’s games. there was this major business deal in the uk making made you fly out to seal the deal, which you did. there’s no doubt as you walked on the street, you caught people’s eyes.
however, you were focused on your phone call that you didn’t notice someone walking ahead. you accidentally bumped into her, sending you both to the ground.
your phone ended up falling on the street, absolutely shattering it, while her hands ended up around your waist. archie had a lopsided grin on his face, but he quickly helped you to your feet.
as he turned to the floor, he held his hand out to which the lady has grabbed. you watched as she dusted the dirt of herself. but you found yourself admiring her freckles, she looked cute.
“sorry about that, i was a bit busy.” you said, as she gave you a soft smile. archie picked up your phone, and slipped it into one of his pockets, before handing you a new one.
“no worries, i’m kyra.” she said, as you held out your hand for her to shake.
“y/n.” you took notice of the clothes she was wearing to see it be the matildas nike blue jacket, making you furrow your eyebrows. so she plays on the same team for your sister.
“do you perhaps play football?” you asked, as she nodded.
“yeah, i play for the matildas.” you gave her a soft smile, as you felt archie nudge you.
“good luck later, it’s the bronze match if i’m not mistaken?” you asked, as kyra nodded.
“will you be watching?” she asked, her voice was a bit eager but it wasn’t enough for you to notice it. but you gave her a nod, knowing how you’ll be there to support your older sister.
“great, i hope to see you there?” she gave you a small smile, as you nodded. she’d be able to see you as you were seated in the family and friends section.
you watched as she bid goodbye, you saw archie give you a smirk and you really wanted to remove it. however, you pulled something out of the inner slot of your coat, a gold vintage style automatic pocket watch, it had a silver chain where you could connected it to your vest.
you were also wearing a business attire, seeing as you had something to settle at your company before the match. you headed to the restaurant that your family was at, opening the door you saw your sister chatting with your parents.
you caught her eyes as she waved you over, you walked confidently catching the eyes of everyone in the room.
“hello el, did you miss me?” you asked, as ellie gave you a soft smile before pulling you into a hug.
“course i did, you’ve been busy with your company. archie, you’re welcome to sit with us.” she said, as you gave her a nod, you’ve been so busy with your company that you hardly had time to spend with your family. archie gave your older sister a smile, before he took a seat beside you.
“i missed you as well, el.” you said, as the food came. they ordered you a burger with a side of fries, not to mention pineapple juice.
“are you nervous, el?” you asked, watching your older sister you just gave you a short nod. you spent a few minutes laughing with your family, and catching up before you had to go.
“i’ll see you guys at the game, and el you got this.” you said kissing your sister’s cheek, before leaving. the ride to the company’s headquarters in brisbane was silent, but archie had hummed from time to time.
“how long do you think the meeting would take?” archie looked from the front mirror to see your facial expression, you looked a bit deep in thought.
“perhaps an hour or two, why?” archie asked, as you shrugged.
“just wondering if i have time to change my outfit:” you wanted to wear ellie’s jersey, if you couldn’t then you’d probably wear a football scarf.
you definitely didn’t have time to change your outfit, so you opted with the matildas scarf, it was worn around your neck. with your attire, you had attracted fans from both sides as it wasn’t quite fitted for the occasion.
however you just ignored their looks, and took your seat at the family and friends section, sitting besides one of your parent before taking a small bag of gummies.
then the kick off began, you were nervous. australia is one of the co-hosts of this tournament, so you knew what it meant for the team, for ellie. in the 26th minute, blackstenius goes down under pressure from polkinghorne, but you groaned after the var review a penalty was awarded to sweden.
rolfö from sweden’s team is the one to take the penalty, as she places the ball on the penalty mark. she takes a short run up, before drilling her shot low into the bottom right corner. arnold, the matlidas goal keeper dives right into the way but can’t exactly stretch across to keep it out of her net, 1-0.
the whistle was blown, signaling half time. you watched ellie’s facial expression as she headed to the tunnel, frustration is all across her face.
“never knew a game was this stressful.” you said, as your mother laughed. you already finished your first packet of gummies, opening the second one as you offered some to your mother who grabbed a few pieces.
then the second half has started, in the 57th minute catley sends a cross to fowler who shoots it, but it is deflected by eriksson who kicked it a few feet away, cooney-cross managed to get a tap on the ball, taking the risk and making it hit the back of the net scoring the equalizer. you watched as the aussie fans cheered.
all they need to do is maintain the score, while trying to get another goal but that’s exactly what they did. in the 89th minute, foord scored an absolute worldie. sweden has crumpled to the ground knowing that they couldn’t score another goal, as the whistle blew marking the end of the game.
you watched as the matildas’s substitute bench ran onto the field, celebrated with the XI that were huddled. they had just won the bronze medal, you wore a proud smile on your face, you were happy that your sister won.
as the game ended, they received their medal’s firstly taking a picture and they did the lap around the field. you felt someone pull you to the field, as it was ellie.
“come on, n/n. i would like for you to meet the team.” ellie said as you came to a quick stop, and looked at her with wide eyes.
“i don’t exactly think that my attire is appropriate for this-“ ellie just laughed, as she tugged your arm forward, pulling you to katrina gorry who was with harper and charli grant.
“ladies, i’d like to introduce my younger sister, this is y/n.” ellie said, as charli’s eyes had this look as if she knew something.
“it’s nice to meet you y/n, i’m katrina.” katrina said, as she introduced you to harper. harper reached out her hands, to which you laughed, and gently carried her.
“y/n?” kyra asked, as she approached you. ellie turning to you with a soft smirk, so she’s the one you talked about when you were having lunch with them.
all you described was someone you thought was cute, had freckles but she never thought it was her teammate.
“kyra, it’s nice to see you again.” you said, nudging your sister’s stomach as she coughed.
“so, you’re ellie’s sister?” she asked, as you gave her a nod.
“right, i forgot to introduce myself—i’m y/n carpenter.” you said, holding your hand out to shake as she laughed. she returned it and gave you a soft smile.
“i’m kyra cooney-cross.” you gave her a smile, as charli’s eyes widened.
“so you’re the cute person that bumped into kyra, this morning.” charli said, as kyra gave her a harsh look. you laughed, then nodded.
“i won’t say i’m cute, but i’m definitely am the one that bumped into her.“ kyra shook her head laughing along with you.
“ellie told us you played soccer, wanna score a goal?” kyra asked, as you looked at your shoes.
“why not” kyra passed you a ball, to which you started juggling before tossing it up, going into a seal position, the ball had landed on top of your nose. when the ball fell, you swung your leg and watched the ball curved sending it into the top corner.
“such a show off.” ellie joked, as you lightly shoved her. kyra looked at you with a soft smile, as you joked around with ellie.
since that encounter, kyra was the first one to make the move. she had asked you out on a date, to which you accepted. it was a dinner date, before having a night walk near the beach.

My posts
Honestly, I spent much of the week coping with storm migraines. You can tell, because I was reblogging a lot from under a cold compress rather than doing anything useful with life.
Reblogs of interest
The Hot Vintage Lady Polls are rough out there, y’all. Round three started closing yesterday (see what’s still open here), and as of this writing, we have lost Bette Davis, Alla Nazimova, Theda Bara, Myrna Loy, Barbra Streisand, Fay Wray, Lucille Ball, Ginger Rogers, and Olivia de Havilland--and it looks like Catherine Deneuve, Clara Bow, Lana Turner, and Mary Pickford are on their way out. Meanwhile, I learned about a ton of actresses I’d never heard of before, only to shriek when Sharmila Tagore, Nadira, and Waheeda Rehman lost this round. (Edwige, I will never forget you.)
Let me remind you (and me sometimes, too): Not everyone has the same taste or childhood attachments or cinema experiences as you. And everybody in this bracket loses. Everybody but one.
(I can tell I’m not cut out for brawling because I’m like, “I will be very sad to see Norma Shearer go, but Hazel Scott seems nice!”)

“Actually, Mr. Musk, I am an attorney. Do you know that?” Here’s the highlights of Mark Bankston, the man who brought down Alex Jones, coping with Elon Musk and Elon Musk’s Lawyer, who is not even licensed in Texas, for 100 pages of deposition.
Hozier Watch 2024: “Too Sweet” has now charted higher in the UK than “Take Me to Church,” and it’s getting real close on the US charts. This is a song that didn’t even make last year’s album. I am endlessly fascinated.
Happy Leland Melvin Day!
Happy Neil Banging Out the Tunes Day!
“Posting endless DNIs because we can’t (or don’t know we can) make spaces just for the people we do want to interact with” actually makes a lot of sense in this centralized social media hellscape.
There is a 20k mg weed gummy and nobody needs that. “Forget meeting the Hat Man this is what turns you into the Hat Man. This is worse than that torture drug that makes you experience 600 billion years in a second. This is the secret to honest to god shifting.”

Just this once, I will allow this AI rendition of a “traditional Polish family” and their traditional Polish woodchuck.
I am absolutely not saying there is anything wrong with being into tentacles; I’m just saying that Pyramid Head doesn’t even have them and thus is a pretty tame choice to complain about.

One of the things that’s so great about this Ilia Malinin free-skate program is, he makes it look so effortless that I would have never figured out on my own, without Tumblr’s commentary, that there’s a couple moves in here that no one in the world can do but him. Like, the very first jump and the announcers start screaming.

Getting Vintage Watches For Sale? Here Are Its Benefits
Tumblr media
Fashion changes as time go by, and from time to time they can be pretty unpredictable. But there are several things that can endure the changes and still captivate lots of people despite their aged appearance, and one of them is old-fashioned watches. Their sophisticated details, gleaming metallic casings, and mechanical designs make them very attractive. That is the reason why a growing number of people are encouraged to get vintage watches for sale.
In case you like to consider something different with how you dress up, perhaps you need to consider purchasing old-fashioned timepieces. Listed below are several advantages you can enjoy if you do so:
1. They'll be in fashion for some time
The most noteworthy trait of old-fashioned watches is their timeless style. These watches can still go well with different fashion styles these days even if they have particular components that are not utilised in the most recent designs anymore. In addition, they usually appeal to many people thanks to their history. For example, you could discover classic timepieces that are passed down to several family generations or those crafted for the military. And since these won't be out of the trend anytime soon, you might purchase a variety of timepieces and start your own collection at some point.
2. Make yourself more unique
When you buy vintage timepieces, chances are that you will have a hard time finding others with a similar design. Even if you do so, it will not be exactly similar. Knowing that, obtaining vintage watches will allow you to present yourself as a person who possesses a distinct fashion sense. It is not every day that you meet a person who uses such wonderful timepieces, and this is extremely useful if you like to stand out in social gatherings or commercial events.
3. They can last for a long time
Old-fashioned watches will have no value if they are destroyed, and that’s the reason they're designed using top-notch resources. Most of them are hand-crafted, so their parts are meticulously set up, especially the mechanics that enable precise movements. Since they can remain in their excellent condition for quite a while even with little to no maintenance, classic timepieces can still garner a high price in the market even after being owned by several individuals or sold again and again.
4. You can get the best value of your money
A huge number of people feel that vintage watches for sale are costly, but this isn't true. If you surf the Internet or ask around, you can locate reasonably-priced deals for this. You can check out stores that offer pre-owned classic timepieces instead of going to prominent stores where prices can be really high. Here, you can obtain them at relatively lower costs in comparison with other places without worrying about receiving low quality items. And most importantly, these timepieces are a lot more valuable because they are previously used by other people.
Due to a huge number of outlets around that has vintage watches for sale, it's pretty easy to buy your first watch. Just keep in mind that you're acquiring the appropriate one based on your finances and preferences, and you will surely enjoy all of these advantages.

The Vintage Calendar [AO3] by @thetranquilteal
With the ending of her contract with the UK Armed Forces, all Claire Beauchamp wants for Christmas is to enjoy a quiet holiday in Scotland with her long-term boyfriend Frank Randall. While visiting with close friends, however, Claire is gifted with a vintage advent calendar that sets her life on a path she never expected... one that leads to Northern Badgers star, James Fraser.
Modern Day AU loosely based on the Netflix Christmas movie ‘The Holiday Calendar’. New chapter posted every day!
A/N: Welcome to The Vintage Calendar! This story is prewritten and scheduled to update with a new chapter each and every day from now until December 24 (along with intermittent updates to my other Christmas stories Wonderful and The Gift). I hope you enjoy this Hallmark-esque tale and I wish you all a happy holiday. A x
Tumblr media
Prologue
“Now then, dear, tell me. What are your plans for Christmas?”
“Just a quiet day together, I think,” Claire sipped at her tea as she thought on her answer. It hadn’t been a long drive from their B&B in Inverness to the Reverend’s Manse but in truth she was still exhausted and wanted nothing more than to sit down and enjoy a hot cuppa, Christmas being the last thing on her mind. “I’m not sure if Frank mentioned, but I’ve not celebrated for some years now.”
“Oh?” Mrs Graham sipped at her own cup casually and Claire appreciated the lack of judgement in her voice.
“I always loved the holiday as a small child - the lights, the festivities, the magic of it all - but with no family to celebrate with and seeing the things that I have over the years... I suppose I’ve turned into quite the Scrooge,” Claire chuckled. “That being said, even if we did decide to do something for Christmas I would still request a quiet day in. No work. No responsibilities,” she sighed happily at the thought. “That’s all I could ever want.”
“Frank mentioned you were stationed overseas, a time or two?”
“That’s correct,” Claire nodded. “My primary role as an Army Nurse was with overseas Medical Regiments. And I enjoyed it, I truly did - it was a very rewarding career and incredibly satisfying - but most recently I was assigned to one of the local Defence Medical Group Hospitals and after a couple of months… well, I realised how tired I was. It was like I had lost that spark that kept me going for so long. By the time renewal for my contract came around I knew I had done all that I needed to do. That it was time for a change.”
“Starting with a holiday in Inverness.”
“Yes,” Claire smiled happily. “It was a hard decision to leave the Armed Forces after so many years but there are so many more options to explore as a civilian and it means spending more time with Frank.” She turned to look at her boyfriend sitting over at the table with Reverend Wakefield, a multitude of papers and books open in front of them. The look on his face as they studied was one that she had most certainly missed.
“Long distance relationships can be difficult,” Mrs Graham acknowledged and Claire turned back to her.
“It feels as though we hardly know each other these days,” Claire admitted quietly. “I’m really looking forward to spending an entire month together with nothing to distract us. I think that’s what we need at this point.”
“Well, if you decide you would like some company come Christmas you are always welcome here at the Manse. Reginald would certainly love to have you both here, as would I,” without waiting for an answer, Mrs Graham continued. “Now, drink up your cup and let’s see what we’ve got there.”
Claire wasn’t at all surprised by the request. Upon their arrival in Inverness, Frank had forewarned her of Mrs Graham’s ‘eccentricities’. Reading tea leaves, she understood, was but one of the older lady’s many hobbies. She tipped up her cup and swallowed the last of her tea before handing it over.
“Well?” Claire joked as she watched Mrs Graham tip her cup this way and that. “Am I going to meet a tall, dark stranger and take a trip across the sea?”
“No, I don’t think so,” Mrs Graham smiled briefly before becoming more serious, her brow creased in contemplation. “There’s an angel which means good news, especially good fortune in love,” she tilted her head, “a clover which means happiness and prosperity that, being near the top of the cup, will likely come quickly. And would you look at that… you might well be right about going on a journey, though not across the sea: the swallow indicates a journey with a pleasant ending. Show me your hand, dear.”
Claire did as requested and waited patiently as she studied the lines on her hand. To her surprise Mrs. Graham simply let go and pushed her chair back.
“Wait here, dear. I’ll be back in a wee moment.”
Claire leaned back and considered everything the older woman had mentioned. Growing up and travelling the world with her Uncle Lambert, she had heard and witnessed many things that were different, unusual - and oftentimes seemingly unexplainable - but she never could say she believed in the spiritual. Faith, even, was something she had come to question during her time in the Force but she couldn’t deny she liked the tale Mrs Graham had told. Good fortune, happiness and prosperity were all things she wished for - as did most other people, admittedly. She stood when Mrs Graham returned with a large wooden item in her arms, something house shaped with little numbered doors all over.
“An advent calendar?” Claire asked.
“Aye, t’was my grandmother’s once upon a time. And her grandmother’s before that.” Mrs Graham placed the calendar down on the table gently. “And now I want you to have it, Claire.”
“Me?”
“Why, yes.”
“Oh, Mrs. Graham. I couldn’t possibly. Surely your children should be the ones to receive a family heirloom? Didn’t you say your son and daughter-in-law were planning to start a family of their own? I’m sure they would appreciate such a beautiful item.”
And beautiful it was. While it was evident it had been crafted a long time ago, the paint remained unblemished and the detailing in perfect condition. Its colours, soft and neutral l rather than bold and tacky like so many contemporary decorations, appealed to her in particular.
“This calendar has been passed down through many a generation,’ Mrs. Graham nodded in agreement, ‘but... no’ necessarily in the family - though it does seem to keep coming back every now and again. I believe this calendar goes to those who need it rather than those who happen upon it."
“Your gift is so incredibly kind, I’m touched.” Claire meant every word but she couldn’t help but ask, “Are you sure you wouldn’t like to give something so special to someone else? Someone who loves celebrating Christmas, perhaps?”
“No, dear, I’m certain. I already knew your opinion on Christmas before giving it to you,” she reminded her. “Besides, you dinnae ken, this old thing might just change your mind.”
Claire looked down at the vintage advent calendar, the intrinsic details even more breathtaking at close range. While she could concede that it was an incredible piece and would look rather wonderful placed on the dresser in the living space at Mrs Baird’s B&B...
A vintage advent calendar changing her view on Christmas? Unlikely.
A/N: Fun Fact: Mrs Graham’s tea leaf interpretations are real interpretations from ‘Tea-cup Reading and Fortune-Telling by Tea Leaves’ by A Highland Seer (2006). // Are you as sceptical of the vintage calendar as Claire? Let me know what you think!

Thornwood Manor: A Travelogue, pt. 1
With our trip to the UK postponed for the second year running, my parents asked if I wanted a ‘place holder’ trip. Pretty sure they were thinking Disney Land or something like that, but I went closer to home - and decidedly more British - and chose two nights stay at Thornwood Castle in Lakewood, Washington.
Tumblr media
Actually a manor house rather than a castle, and probably a smallish manor house as far as these things go, Thornwood is still a worthy piece of architecture, a lovely place to spend the night, very photogenic, and a popular wedding venue. There was a wedding going on when we arrived and another the second day of our stay. It’s also been used as a filming site a time or two, the most recent - and famous - being Stephen King’s “Rose Red.” There were copies of the DVD liberally lying around in rooms and a poster in the upstairs ‘Movie Room’.
I stayed in Anna’s Suite, located on the second floor in the north corner (upper right in the above picture, right next to the balcony) and my parents took the Grand View right across the hall. They got the full kitchen, dining area, and balcony access.
I got the soaker tub with air jets.
Tumblr media
Yes I took a bath. Then I got out, drained the water, and immediately found the button for the air jets. So I took another the next day. This was one of the three very modern features of the room. The others are the kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, and Keurig machine; the portable air conditioner, there for the season; and the big screen TV, tactfully hidden in the wardrobe.
Tumblr media
I got the BBC miniseries of “Pride and Prejudice” as my complimentary, “here’s one you don’t have to fetch down from upstairs’ movie. My parents got - you guessed it - “Rose Red.” I didn’t watch it, but felt I got the more appropriate of the two options.
Anna’s Suite, along with being an amusing choice for Downton Abbey lovers just for the name, was the room of the original lady of the house. It is currently the honeymoon suite and home to one of the manor’s many ghosts. It is one of the few actual rooms that is considered haunted, specifically.
I didn’t see any ghosts, but one made off with one of my coat hangers. Then it brought me a different coat hanger which was, admittedly, much nicer than the one it took, and that I felt compelled to leave there because, well, it wasn’t mine. Goofy ghosts.
I really should have written about that in the guest book.
The room itself is lovely! Light blues and creams with matching curtains and wallpaper, a great view of the front drive and the garden, and furniture that’s so pretty you almost don’t dare sit on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only part I really could have done without was the doll of Jackie O. sitting on the mantle of the fireplace.
Tumblr media
I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice enough doll, but. Um. If I actually was there with my newly-wed wife, I would have carefully relocated her to the walk-in closet/dressing area/water closet for the duration of the post nuptial celebration.
The rest of the manor did a splendid job of living up to expectation. It had a large, open,  dark great hall with lots of lovely windows.
Tumblr media
It had a winding stair case with another lovely window on the landing, complete with large, expensive, vintage looking objects d’art.
Tumblr media
It, of course, had a library. The reading selection was widely varied and, to my amusement, colour coded.
Tumblr media
And, upstairs, the a fore mentioned movie room where you could get movies to take down to your room, sit and watch them there, and, of course, enjoy the vintage movie posters......

...the vintage being 2002. Actually, there were posters for a 1923 silent film called “Eyes of the Totem” that had recently been rediscovered and they had posters of that too, but they weren’t nearly as prominent.
Upstairs there’s also a game room with pool, ping pong, foos ball, a bingo cage, and a few antique toys of low-level creepiness.
Tumblr media
You can’t tell from here, but the dolls have neither glass eyes or carefully sculpted teeth....thank God. ...that and I think they’re paper mache rather than porcelain.
Then there’s the hall of mirrors, leading the way to the Casablanca room, which is just cool.
Tumblr media
Outside measures up just as nicely, with a couple of surprises tossed in. There is, of course, a fountain in the middle of the drive. You could get a great shot of it from my room, so I took pictures of it in every available lighting. I will not post them all here, I promise.
Tumblr media
The door is guarded by lions, as it should be.
Tumblr media
And here I seem to have run out of room.
To be continued.

Chapter 1
Chapter 1 | Chapter 1a | Chapter 1b | Chapter 1c | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 |
London, UK. Home to tea, biscuits, and the Queen. It all felt new, albeit being able to visit in the past on business trips, nothing quite compared to the feeling of backpacking halfway around the world just for leisure. Snapping photo after photo of the beautiful nightscapes from the top of the iconic double-decker bus.
Ping. Ping.
“God. Leave me alone.” a growl escaped her lips upon hearing the notification alarm from her phone. It would’ve been nice if she’d set her phone on airplane mode for a little while longer but what good would it have possibly done anyway? She slid the device out of her jacket pocket; tapped it a few times to unlock and view-- the message was from her trusted colleague, Max.
> Good evening. I’ve heard you’re in London, Bellona. The Council sends their regards. > Attachment: 1 file
> I’m here on vacation. Give it to someone else.
Ping. Ping. Ping. Ping.
> Oh my. That’s a first. > I thought you lived for the thrill of these? > Although they specifically asked for you on this assignment. > But alright. I'll see what I can do.
> If there really isn’t anyone else, then fine. I’ll do it. > Just make sure they don’t bother me again during my stay.
Before any ungodly curse could leave her system, a young man called from the stairs as the bus came to a halt.
“Miss, we’re here. Eldon Square!”
She pushed off the chair and rose to her feet; duffel bag hanging from the edge of her shoulder. She thanked the lad and the driver for their assistance and even took a quick snap of them before finally disembarking her first public ride in the streets of London.
She checked her phone for the directions to the apartment she booked. It was roughly 3 blocks away. Surely, a relaxing 10-minute walk under the full moon in the quiet streets of London would be a great way to cap off the night.
Ping. Ping.
She turned to her phone again with a scowl, which instantly faded into a thin smile. Thankfully, good news from her business partner greeted her this time.
> Hey, Amaya! Just wanted to let you know that we’ve secured the 15M contract with Kotsca TV! Everything is well and on its way. So just sit back, relax, and enjoy London! > The kids also bid you safe travels.
> That’s amazing! Thanks for the update, Nikki! Take them out to dinner and drinks, please. It's on me.
Just as she turned a corner, a man frantically ran into her, clipping her shoulder and knocking her bag and phone to the ground.
“Oh, dear! My apologies, miss! Are you alright?” he quickly apologized and reached for her fallen items on the ground.
“Yes, I’m fine. Are you?”
He nodded and flashed her a sweet smile. “I wish I could stay and chat but I have an appointment to catch. Good night, miss.” He left her with another nod before running off again.
“Brits.” she muttered as she picked up her bag. Being a child from the South East, Westerners always baffled her. She slightly paused in motion as something glimmered from underneath her bag: a golden pocket watch. A polished to perfection vintage with a sapphire gemstone in the middle.
That guy must’ve dropped this.
She quickly picked it up and ran after the man, tracing his steps while trying to recall what he looked like. It had only been an extremely short interaction, but luckily she got to get a clear view of him.
White hair. Glasses. Beige jacket. Blue shirt. White gloves.
“Hey! Wait!” She yelled, chasing him into St. James’s Park, away from the cemented walkways, and into denser greenery. He seemed to have slowed down past a tree, but when she got there, he was nowhere to be found.
She turned, shoulders slightly heaved as her eyes darted around to scan the area to check. He couldn’t have just disappeared into thin air... right?
Panting, she took a step back to lean on a tree to catch her breath. But just as she did, the very ground gave way and disappeared right beneath her feet.
In a blink of an eye, the park was out of view, and she was free falling into a dark abyss. Arms painfully extended to reach for something, anything to halt the fall. Nothing. This is how it’ll end, she thought.
She closed her eyes, clutched her bag closely, and prepared for the worst.
.
.
.
.
Ok hello. This first part will kinda follow the prologue of Ikerev. Kinda because Amaya (aka my first OC) isn’t really like Alice... Sure, she could eat a horse too but-- let me stop there. Well anyway, I am having an internal conflict on whether I should write it or just skip it. Or maybe keep it as a hidden chapter?
Hope you’ll enjoy her wild ride as much as I did writing it! Amaya... She’s tough and unpredictable. A real roller-coaster of a lady, and I love her.

[ @iinauras : Multiples of 5, if applicable / o/    (meme link) ]
BASICS 5 : When’s their birthday?      Who knows!  He wasn’t born on Earth and it’s difficult for him to calculate the exact day and month even if he’s managed to approximate his age in Earth years
APPEARANCE 5 : Do they have any physical ailments or disabilities?      Not really!  683 is relatively healthy, they aren’t quite in peak physical condition because earth food isn’t the greatest for them and they’re very limited in what they can eat.  despite being a little sickly thin, they’re still entirely able-bodied
BACKGROUND 5 : Where do they currently live? What’s their place like?      most of the rps on my account take place in the verse where 683 has come to Earth already but they’re still pretty new (think one to two years).  they live in the london/UK (unfortunately) on a very touristy street near carnaby, which is where a lot of very tacky 60s nostalgia festers and rots, specifically a 2nd hand vintage clothing store (hence where he gets his fits).  sid is an employee at the store, and sid, priscilla and 683 are in the apartment above it.  it’s only a two bedroom apartment so 683 just sleeps on the couch.  he doesn’t have many possessions, but most of his old stuff (his old communication device, his old uniform) is kept in a drawer chest underneath the TV set,  and he otherwise keeps his clothes in priscilla’s room, and his books/magazines/trinkets in a pile by the television.  sid is deeply dissatisfied with modern life because its Hard so he has an intense nostalgia for the 60s/70s, and the apartment decor reflects that; 683 was actually shocked that the real world on earth wasnt an austin powers movie because all the media they consumed (all the books, dvds, television, posters, culture, etc) in sid’s house made it seem like it was still 1969
RELATIONSHIPS 5 : Who do they hate? Do they have any enemies?      683 doesn’t really hate anyone; they dislike plenty of people, but not outright HATRED, and they really dont have any enemies (they’re not worth it).  in the broader context of the story that i havent really finished working on yet, there’s a local photographer/influencer who constantly makes fun of 683 for being a total loser and 683 doesn’t HATE her as much as he’s scared of her and torments himself reading her instagram posts talking about what a total dork he is and how bad his band sucks.  on atomina, 682 (to the right of 683′s room, 684 had the room to the left) also thinks 683 is a total idiot and doesn’t really hold back voicing his opinion that 683 is a waste of resources, time, effort, etc. and 683 is a lazy clown.  clearly 683 doesnt like these people but i doubt he hates them
FUN FACTS 5 : What position do they sleep in?      haha ... on a couch so ... curled up teeny tiny so they dont fall off and hit their head on the coffee table
FUN FACTS 10 : What songs remind you of them? [ wonderboy by the kinks ] [ the party’s crashing us by of montreal ] [ evening wear by mindless self indulgence ]  [ maok pi naok by ros sereysothea and sinn sisamouth ] [ lady stardust by david bowie ] i wont explain these because everyone already hates me for having such a long post on the dash
FUN FACTS 15 : Do they follow any religions/gods? Do they celebrate holidays?      683 is technically an atheist, but they wouldn’t call themselves that because the notion of religion doesn’t exist where they’re from (ergo lack of religion is just the default). they think religion is bizarre but charming.  there’s the tiniest bit of ancestor worship in their planet, but not like you would think: they just make effort to commemorate those who passed away before them, but they do not entertain beliefs of afterlife, that the deceased watch over them, etc. just general appreciation for their work.  683′s planet also doesn’t have holidays, but on earth, they celebrate the holidays that their friends do. so 683 celebrates holi, diwali, etc. because of sid and new years, christmas, etc because of priscilla.

the next chapter
No, I don’t have a name for this chapter. Yes, this is a wedding. Yes, this kind of serves as an “epilogue” to 09/01/1998. If you haven’t read those yet, please do so before reading this!
This wedding occurred on 09/03/1998, two days after the events of the last story.
Part 1 || Part 2
“Just one last touch of glitter over here,” Chiara murmured, waving the can of hairspray once more over Clara’s hair as Badeea and Tulip secured the bun on the top of her head. “And done!”
The three girls stepped back to admire the bride in the mirror, and it was a sight to behold. Donned in a red dress that embraced both vintage and oriental styles, corset shimmering like a ruby and skirt wrapped in silk and layers of tulle, she looked like a phoenix rising through a furious flame, a crimson rose fresh in full bloom--a beauty descended from the early sunrise. Her glasses were removed for the special occasion; she wore her contact lenses from her days at the Task Force in their place. Dark grey eye shadow with red and gold accents highlighted her brown eyes, and with a hint of crimson blush and a coat of magenta lipstick, what once was a warrior was turned into an elegant princess.
“Andre did a brilliant job with the dress,” Tulip said in awe. “I mean, he did a brilliant job with everyone’s clothes--and in such a short span of time, too!”
“And the choice of makeup he put on you as well--it looks stunning!” Badeea added with a nod. “Then again, he was the Style Wizard of Hogwarts. He could use his trendsetting talents anywhere.”
“I’m so lucky to be a bridesmaid for this wedding, at least,” Chiara remarked, twirling around slowly to admire the cream-coloured full-length dress Andre made for all the girls. “I never thought that I’d see the day when my closest friend ties the knot with her loved one.”
“Hey, we’re all here together, and that’s what matters!” Tulip reassured her with a huge smile. “And I’m laying off the pranks today, too. I promise I took off Dennis’ Dungbomb for the occasion.”
“Careful we don’t ruin the flower crowns little Em made for us,” Badeea warned, straightening the wreaths of daisies and sunflowers on their heads and fixing her own as well over her hijab. “Here’s hoping the others get the wedding pavilion set up on time.”
Just then, in came little Em with several bouquets of fresh flowers in hand--and she, too, was wearing a cream-coloured dress, the hem already beginning to gather grass and dirt stains from working in the garden.
“Everything’s just about set,” little Em announced with a broad grin as she handed the bunches to the girls in the changing tent. “The boys did a great job with the marquee--I had dad bring in some bamboo shoots for the pedestal for the minister, and the whole place is decorated with flowers and branches from the Wiggentrees. The Bowtruckles weren’t too happy about that, so I had to bribe them with a bunch of woodlice so they wouldn’t disturb the wedding. And everyone’s in their seats as well--they’re all waiting for you.”
“Is dad coming by as well?” Clara asked, turning around from the mirror.
“Yup--both mum and dad just arrived not too long ago,” little Em confirmed. “Dad said he had to make sure the Screechsnaps and the Fanged Geraniums had enough dragon dung to keep them satiated. And the Bouncing Bulbs he recently potted were a rather exciting bunch.”
“Ah, I remember those days in the greenhouses,” Chiara reminisced with a laugh. “Well, at least your parents are here, Clara.”
“And another man named Cecil Lee has come around too. He introduced himself as Barnaby’s uncle,” little Em added. “I’m actually kind of glad Barnaby has some decent family.”
“Indeed.” Clara nodded, marvelling at how smart the response sounded--maybe Barnaby was right after all. Everything did sound more intelligent with the word “indeed”.
Tulip then turned to Clara and gave her a hug. “We’ll be outside waiting for you, alright?”
“Can’t wait.” Clara nodded as she hugged Tulip back, and the three girls exited the changing tent. Little Em then walked over to Clara and looked at their reflections in the mirror, a frown settling over her face as she twirled the bouquet in her hands.
“So...how are you feeling?” little Em finally asked her sister. “You know, since the bonfire and all. I know you’ve been trying to keep busy with the wedding plans, but…”
She trailed off, unsure of how she could phrase the question without coming off insensitive.
“I still miss them,” Clara admitted with a wistful sigh. “There’s never a day when I don’t think about them, and even now with the ritual done I still think about them. But I know they’re happy. They lived a fulfilling life, each and every one. And we honoured them well with the lanterns and everything--I know that they’ll always be watching us from afar now.”
“Even if you didn’t like them at the start?” little Em inquired now.
“Merula...Merula I can forgive,” Clara reassured her with a laugh. “Besides, she died defying her parents in the war. I call that seriously brave. Reckless, maybe, but brave. And Talbott at least managed to take down the murderer who took his parents’ lives in cold blood. Ben...he took down so many Death Eaters on his own, too. Tonks even went to the battle to support her husband. So many things we do out of love, even if...some of us didn’t know it.”
“At least what you did, you did out of love, too.” Little Em smiled and squeezed Clara’s hand. “Just like you’ve always done, what with the danger of the Cursed Vaults and Rakepick and R and the Japanese dark forces. You have so much love in your heart, and I’m sure everyone else you know knows it too. Never forget that as you walk down the aisle and seal your union with Barnaby. What you do, and all that you do, you do out of love.”
For a moment, Clara nodded, her face pensive as she let the words sink in. Then she smirked playfully at her sister. “Remind me to give you the same lecture when you get married to Diego.”
“Oi! I don’t like him like that!” little Em protested now, scrunching her nose in disbelief. “We only kissed once before the battle but that’s it!”
“It’s still something!” Clara remarked. “Alright, fine, I’ll stop teasing if it makes you feel better.”
“Clara? Little Em? You in there?”
Jacob finally arrived into the changing tent, accompanied by their father wearing a matching black tux with his eldest son.
“It’s time, isn’t it?” little Em asked.
“Everything is in order, and the minister has arrived,” Jacob said with a nod. “It’s time.”
Clara’s father, Sueh-Yen, gave her eldest daughter a quick glance-over and smiled, the edges bringing up the wrinkles near his eyes. “You look wonderful, little star--so grown up.”
“I’ll always be your little girl, dad,” Clara reassured him. “Now come on. We can’t keep everyone waiting.”
And with a chuckle, she took her father’s arm and walked out of the tent, Jacob and little Em following close behind.
---
“Nervous, Barnaby?”
Charlie glanced over at the groom with a worried look in his eyes, reaching over to help him straighten the gold dragon lapel in Barnaby’s dark green suit.
“Very,” Barnaby nodded. “I just hope that this wasn’t a mistake. It’s been almost 5 years since we got engaged, and now...I can’t believe this is happening.”
“You don’t need me to pinch you to know it’s real, Barnaby. And besides, I’m sure Clara would love this more than anything,” Charlie said with a gentle pat on his shoulder. “Your love withstood almost three years across the globe. If that doesn’t say something, I don’t know what does.”
“I guess you’re right.” Barnaby exhaled and nodded at his best friend. “Thanks for being my best man, by the way. I really owe it to you.”
“Of course.” Charlie smiled and nodded at Barnaby’s confidence.
From the other side of the altar, Penny smiled at the two--she was Clara’s maid of honour, after all, ensuring that all the other bridesmaids were in line. “Barnaby, you and Clara have always been the cutest couple at school, and you’ve been together through so much. I can see there’s nothing you won’t do for each other. Just hold on to that for all that life is worth.”
“Shh!” Jae whispered now. “Here she comes!”
Everyone turned around now to see Clara enter the wedding marquee with her father, taking careful steps as Badeea conducted a small group of girls in a wedding chorus. Her eyes immediately locked on Barnaby at the end of the aisle, and it took everything in her not to run towards him and embrace him. All the memories from their time at Hogwarts and beyond flooded her mind, and in that very moment she had never felt more love for this man than she ever had. They withstood so much together and apart, it was a miracle that at the end of the day they haven’t cracked from all the pressure.
Jacob and Em eventually took their seats with their mother, and once Clara reached the altar, her father passed her off with a teary smile. She then passed the bouquet to Penny and took Barnaby’s hands, facing her soon-to-be husband with a small smile of her own. Perhaps it was the fact that she had her glasses off for the occasion, or that she was so close to crying again, because then Barnaby lifted a hand and gently touched her cheek, his thumb gently stroking her face.
“My star,” he managed to whisper, emerald eyes gleaming with happiness and love as he looked at her.
Clara couldn’t help but grin at the compliment, heat blooming in her cheeks like they always had with every compliment. “My hero,” she whispered back.
Soon, the chorus ended, the entire vicinity fell quiet, and the minister officiating the wedding at the altar cleared his throat. Clara couldn’t help but notice that it was the same man who spoke at Dumbledore’s funeral--the only time she had returned to the UK in her time at the Chinese Wizarding Task Force.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered today to celebrate the union of two very faithful souls…” the wizard commenced, nodding at Clara and Barnaby whose smiles were so wide they felt they could literally radiate with light.
How quickly time had flown, Clara thought, leaning against Barnaby’s hand still against her cheek. The intolerance she once felt for him had long since dissipated when he jumped in front of her to block her from Ismelda’s curse...and now here they stood, clad in not only glamour but in warmth and love. She felt Barnaby’s thumb rub over her knuckles, and she squeezed his hand in response.
All they had lived for came down to this very moment now.
“Do you, Barnaby Lee, take this woman, Clara Xing-Hui Lin, to be your wife for as long as you both shall live?” the wizard finally asked Barnaby.
“I do,” Barnaby responded almost immediately, a gentle smile on his face as he faced his wife-to-be.
“And do you, Clara Xing-Hui Lin, take this man--”
“Yes!” Clara blurted out before the minister could finish. “Um, I mean, I do, yes, sorry--”
Barnaby only chuckled and leaned forward, their foreheads touching. The simple gesture was enough to calm her, and she quietly breathed out a sigh of relief, her face relaxing in a smile.
“Then I declare you both bonded for life.”
The minister clapped his hands and raised his wand--a shower of silver stars descended upon the couple still holding hands. Barnaby gently locked his fingers under Clara’s chin, and pulled her into a kiss, the moment so warm and sweet it felt like they were suspended in time.
And soon the reception went underway as family and friends both greeted the new couple and wished them well. Food and drink were served, the Weird Sisters struck up a tune, and everyone danced the night away.
As the night slowly wound down from the whirlwind that preceded it, Clara couldn’t help but let out a tired, grateful smile. Tonight was about more than just a union--tonight was about penning the last chapter and starting a new one. Together, everyone came to terms with the losses they suffered. And together, they all came to see the new chapter unfold.
Together, they would make new marks in the enigma of time.

TheSeaVoices Drawing Playlist
A mixture of drawing moods, themes and favourites, not necessarily relevant lyric-wise but all very carefully selected for zero frustration - maximum flow, and perhaps an element of sexiness?
If you want a 43 track playlist for drawing or painting to - this works :)
-
1- Wallowa Lake Monster, Sufjan Stevens
Fucking love the fucking lyrics! Beautiful story and atmosphere and voice. I hadn’t listened to Sufjan much before watching Call Me By Your Name and just caning Visions of Gideon for weeks after.
2- Experiment In Terror, Henry Mancini
From the 60’s noir thriller of the same name - so stylish and cool - what a soundtrack sir! I love the slow threat and slinkiness.
3- My Body, Perfume Genius
Similar slink here, dirty kind of glide. Have seen PG a couple of times live and just ABSORBED it into my soul - he dances up there like a beautiful table-dancer and the crowd is moving with him - always good albums to paint to.
4- Danke Schoen, Wayne Newton
Turn this way up! 21 year old Wayne blasts this out like a genius - his voice is amazing and so feminine. I know it from Ferris Bueller's Day Off originally where it is put to very good use.
5- My Little Brown Book, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane
I can listen to Duke Ellington all day every day, those brushy cymbals in this are so lazy cool. That’s the third sixties song so far.
6- One More Kiss Dear, Vangelis
Bladerunner, one of my favourite films.  WHAT A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK! This song was an accidental recording sung for the demo by Don Percival (not the intended singer) and the weird spooky vocal just worked for the mock vintage sound.
7- Verbarhemiopia, Ed Dowie
Released through Lost Map Records. I know these people and they always have great acts - I had a lot of exceptional experiences on the Inner Hebridean island of Eigg with them. This track is just a beautiful, pulsing moonbeam.
8- Just Like Honey, The Jesus and Mary Chain
Such a sleazy, druggy, sexy song - dirty guitar and sensual drums - the opening drum intro, borrowed from (another 60’s track), Be My Baby by The Ronettes coming up on this list at number 38.
9- Grid, Perfume Genius
I rec the video!
10- Here, Pavement
Oh Pavement - a big part of my identity! - Live, they are a fucking dream! This song is a regular ear worm.
11- Demon Host, Timber Timbre
Great lyrics, great album
12- Animal Friends, P-ano
The only song I’m into on this album, the atmosphere is great. A sad little song.
13- Sleepwalk, Santo and Johnny
1959 so lets call it 60’s again XD. A great instrumental - that slide, steel guitar sound is lush and the asmr trigger of my dreams
14- Hang Out The Stars In Indiana, Al Bowlly
MY FAVOURITE SONG OF ALL FUCKING TIME. I can and do listen to this on repeat all through a drawing even if it takes a day. Withnail & I introduced me - one of my favourite films. And, of course Bowlly is on The Shining too.
15- Wasted Teens, Monoganon
Lost Map records again, excellent and crazy live performance from these on Eigg.
16- The Alien, Ben Salisbury, Geoff Barrow
Such dark foreboding anticipation. From the Annihilation soundtrack - brilliant film and score. I love Portishead too.
17- Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries, Al Bowlly
Hey cheer up everyone - fuck it!
18- Wanna Sip, Fever Ray
I do! This is from their live recording at the Troxy - I WAS THERE —- oooooooooooof fuck WHAT A SHOW honestly!
19- Lipstick Stains, Jay Som
“I wanted to musically capture the immediate and intense but beautiful feeling of infatuation.” —— yep!
20- Heat Wave, Snail Mail
Yes! They are brilliant - saw them live at End Of The Road and the tent was CRAMMED!!!!!! The atmosphere was amazing - she is so young and so great.
21- I Love How You Love Me, The Paris Sisters
Hello 1960’s! The creamy Spector sound and that spoken word is amazing.
22- Shadow, Chromatics
Loved this on Twin Peaks The Return, it’s a gem and perfect for drawing/painting to.
23- Bankrobber, The Clash
I always sing ‘Daddy was a vampire’
24- Do Your Best, John Maus
Slo-mo beauty.
25- Canadian Girl, The Walkmen
Nice vintage-tinged weirdness and soul.
26- Wave of Mutilation (UK SURF) Pixies
I love Pixies, only seen them live once but it was very, very, very special. Beautiful, laid back b side version that I prefer to the album track.
27- Fell An Ox
There was a time where all I would listen to was King Creosote - it was an obsession! I have lost count of KC gigs I’ve been to.
28- Slow West, Django Django
Love the film, love the soundtrack, loved Django Django up till the last few releases. There is a live version of this on KEXP from four years ago which is the one I usually listen to. Fucking brilliant live - got to see them on Eigg one time too. I rec the Slow West film if you haven’t seen it.
29- Withnail’s Theme, Jack Hallam
Great film and soundtrack - a big favourite.
30- Portofino 1, Raymond Scott
60’s!  Ha - I hadn’t realised this at all till writing all this.
31- Lady Gaylord, Raymond Scott
From Manhattan Research Inc a collection of his advertising jingles and snippets from the 60’s
32- The Pink Room, Angelo Badalamenti
Filthiest song ever? From Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
33- Goodnight Felicia, Chris Bear
From the score to excellent TV show, High Maintenance. I do love Grizzly Bear anyway and cried at their last gig I went to - I always cry at gigs though so….
34- Plainsong, The Cure
My teenage self was a massive Cure fan and I dedicated my record player, school books, wardrobe and bedroom to them! Saw them live only once (the LIGHTS!!!!) because I was too young, obsessed over Robert Smith a lot! This song and the whole album were a big favourite. Beautiful.
35- A Reluctant Hero/Betsy/End Credits Taxi Driver, Bernard Herrmann
I love Herrmann and I really love Taxi Driver. This is just…. ooof!
36- I Fall In Love Too Easily, Chet Baker
Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1954- what a pretty little voice.
37- Looking Back I Should Have Been Home More, Richard Swift
Just lovely, so sad about Swift.
38- Be My Baby, The Ronettes
The best opening song use ever- MEAN STREETS - turn this RIGHT up please.
39- Go, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips - Daniel Johnston cover
Doubly sad because of Sparklehorse and Daniel Johnston. I have seen The Flaming Lips many times throughout their career - from small gigs to radio telescope gigs! What a fucking show!
40- Every Night, Perfume Genius
Just nice stuff. Like I said - live he is so sensual- his moves are amazing.
41- Fireflies Made Out of Dust, Happy Jawbone Family Band
Great track. Love the lyrics.
42- Sleeping Lessons, The Shins
Richard Swift again, on keyboards. I really enjoy the historical references and atmosphere on this.
43- Smoke Rings, Les Paul, Mary Ford
1952 - ssssso ssssssspooooky

How to shop for vintage aesthetics!
With vintage fashion and aesthetics becoming increasingly popular, I thought I'll share some of my techniques of shopping affordably for vintage clothing. A couple of disclaimers to start with, my preferred aesthetic time period for clothing is the 80s and 90s however, this does not mean that this ‘guide’ can’t be used be used for whatever vintage style you’re shopping for. This post will also be UK based as that’s where I live, some of the places where I tend to shop may apply to Europe but I'm not entirely sure! Finally this is how I shop and what I look out for when shopping for vintage clothing, if you got any of your own tips please share, vintage clothes shopping unfortunately, has become incredibly expensive :( Now all that incredibly dull stuff is out of the way, lets get into it!
The first thing I would do before even attempting to go vintage clothes shopping is research. Knowing your era and the distinctive style of that era is incredibly important. I know it sounds self- explanatory but having a good insight of the fashion and culture of your chosen vintage aesthetic will mean that you can spot certain pieces in the wild with ease. With anything if you know what you’re looking for you’ll find it a lot easier. The best research in my opinion is just asking someone who grew up or lived through that time period, they tend to remember the more obscure and weird trends that have been long forgotten. Maybe, for the greater good, I'm looking at you leg warmers. If you don’t like social interaction and I don’t blame you, I don’t like talking to old people either, watching TV shows from the time will also give you an insight. Top Of The Pops in my view is the best show to watch not because of the awful obvious lip-syncing, like how did they fool anyone when they’re playing electric guitars plugged into nothing ? But because you can see how both celebrities and normal people dressed.
Tumblr media
Other shows I would recommend have to be of course friends, we all know that Rachel Greene was a 90s fashion icon, ok. To summarise, research means that shopping for your chosen vintage aesthetic is a lot easier, you can avoid common mistakes such as buying something that’s way too modern or clothing which was not fashionable in that particular era.
When you have decided what vintage era you’re shopping for and what you are looking for, knowing where to shop is the next priority. Like I said I live in the UK so some of these are maybe UK specific and I don’t have loads of money, so that narrows down some of the options. One of the best places to look for vintage clothing is charity shops. Due to the troubling economic climate at the moment there’s like 10 charity shops in every town spreading like head lice in a primary school. Consequently, it’s probably the most accessible way to shop for vintage clothes. If you are like me and favour an 80s/ 90s aesthetic look in the mens section as most of the clothes from this era were unisex or have a more oversized boxy look which means many volunteers mistakenly put these items in the mens. Anyway who need to conform to gender norms, wear what you like! Unfortunately, some charity shops have caught on to the popularisation of vintage aesthetics as such some items will go on their online shops (Still worth a look) or prices for vintage clothing will be higher than other pieces of clothing but bear in mind these prices tend to still be lower than eBay and vintage shops. It’s really hit and miss but when you do find something it’s normally a bargain. Recently I managed to get a wind breaker for £8.99 and it even had it’s original tag still attached! Plus this method of shopping for vintage clothes is ethical and helps real good causes.

Another place where I look for vintage clothing is car boot sales. Normally you find absolutely nothing but they’re still fun to go to nonetheless. Anyway you could strike it lucky and find a long lost supremes costume at a French car boot (yes that really happened!). If you do find anything the great thing about car boots is that you can let out your inner apprentice candidate and haggle on prices. Though it’s rare to find anything apart from old ladies’ bone china plates with matching bowls, if you do you tend to find something you’ll get it for a steal when compared to eBay.
Shops that specialises in selling vintage clothing obviously will have the most stock and variety of pieces however, it’s going to cost you. Vintage sales are also a possibility but though the ‘low’ price per kilo is enticing once you put one sweatshirt or a pair of jeans in that bag you’re done for. Vintage sales are only good value for money when all the items you want are super light, if not they can become super expensive real quick. Also be aware that though these are called vintage sales there are a lot of items that are not vintage in the slightest.

So, how can you tell if a piece of clothing is vintage? The first thing I look at is the label. Most vintage t-shirts and jumpers will have a label sewn in, while modern clothing will have what would been the label printed into the fabric. It’s hard to explain so here’s an example:

However, this is not a definite rule some modern clothing will also have labels that are sewn in! Some over things to look out for to identify vintage clothing from modern is the materials. Look out for those incredibly flammable and definitely safe materials. Zips are also a big clue if a piece of clothing is vintage or not, older clothing tended to have metal zips while modern pieces have plastic. This is probably a cost cutting measure.
We all know that vintage clothing can be expensive so buying new versions of retro products can also be a possibility if you want to go for a certain retro aesthetic. This is a cheaper way of shopping however, quality and durability may vary when compared to the original product. I always buy new when it comes to shoes just because I’m not a fan of wearing someone’s else's incredibly worn 20+ years old trainers. But whatever floats your boat, I guess. Most athleisure brands like reebok will do a classic range which replicates retro shoes such as the freestyle hi which was worn by 11 in Stranger things 3.

Brands like Casio also continues to make vintage products such as the F-91W which sometimes gets discounted to as low as £7.99. The quality of these are superb and can add retro feel to any outfit.
so, there's some of my tips for how to shop for vintage clothing, this isn't all of them but I think this post is way too long now! If you have any tips that you would like to share please write them in the comments. I love learning new things!!

Day 1: Candy Cane
Claire wrapped her dressing gown around her a little tighter as she shuffled across the living space to the kitchenette, early morning light guiding the way. She placed the kettle on the stove and set about preparing tea, her cold hands fumbling with the canister.
“Still cold, love?” Frank came up behind her and rubbed his hands up and down her arms gently, trying to generate some heat.
“Yes,” she admitted with a light laugh as she wrapped her dressing gown around her a little tighter still. Mrs Baird’s Bed and Breakfast was quaint and in an ideal location, in the very centre of Inverness, but it was not as warm and cosy as she would have liked. “I just can’t seem to shake it.”
“Here,” he took the spoon out of her hand and guided her out of the way, “let me finish the tea. You go and sit by the fire.”
“Thank you,” she kissed him on the cheek and made her way around the couch towards the purple armchair that had caught her eye the moment they entered their accommodation. She paused, though, when the vintage calendar caught her eye.
“Frank?” Claire called.
“Hmm?”
“Did you open this?”
“Open what, darling?”
“The calendar that Mrs. Graham gave us.”
“No, I haven’t had the chance to have a closer look yet. Is there there something for today, then?”
“Yes,” Claire’s brow furrowed as she reached out and picked up the little figurine sitting in the already open doorway. “It’s a little candy cane.”

The sun had long since set by the time Claire wandered the streets of downtown Inverness looking for somewhere to stop for a warm drink. Sparkling lights and Christmas decorations adorned each side and muffled festive tunes could be heard from many of the doorways she passed. She couldn’t bring herself to walk through any of them however, the lights seemingly too bright and vibe feeling too thick, and instead kept walking, taking turns here and there looking for somewhere a little more quiet to spend her evening without Frank.
It had been a productive day, first studying various heavy tomes with the Reverend at the Manse and then a few hours spent at the local library looking over what Claire considered to be mounds of papers brought to them by the librarian, a large eyed woman with thick glasses, all too happy to deliver more than they could possibly read to their table along with what seemed to be a never ending cup of candy canes. It was there Frank had discovered a new lead, a handwritten note suggesting some rituals performed during yuletide centuries ago had a deeper and more intricate history than previously believed. Seeing the light spark in his eyes, Claire had encouraged him to continue his research and told him not to worry about their plan to spend the evening together - they had a whole month in town and one evening spent apart wouldn’t ruin anything after all.
The streets got darker and Claire subsequently got calmer, slowing her walk to a much more casual stroll, a warm looking restaurant now set in her sights. Suddenly a door opened to her left and a group of people flowed out, merriment evident in their faces if not their voices, each carrying boxes of what looked to be homemade Christmas decorations. She instinctively moved to the side to get out of the way, just barely dodging a stray oversized candy cane to the head and waited patiently in the entrance of an alleyway for them to pass.
“Druid!”
Claire jumped and turned to find an older man standing in an unassuming doorway staring at her. He was dressed in a shirt and kilt that had certainly seen better days and she looked around quickly to make sure that he was, in fact, looking at her before responding. “I’m sorry, what?”
“Druid!" The man repeated, waving for her to come in. "Ach, come on lass! I cannae stand here waiting for ye all night. Come in before ye attract attention!”
“I don’t-”
Obviously frustrated by her hesitation, the man grabbed her hand and pulled her inside, his touch surprisingly gentle for a man so seemingly agitated.
She stumbled slightly but regained her balance in time to watch the man leave her just as quickly as he had found her to join a group of men huddled on one side of the establishment. She pushed her indignation aside for a moment to look around and - found a very ordinary tavern. It made sense that she hadn’t noticed this place herself, she thought. It was free from glitz, glamour and - perhaps most significantly - any holiday glitter. Overall, it was rather dark and grungy with lanterns and fireplaces providing a warmth she hadn’t experienced all day.
Determined to remain calm after such an undignified entrance, she squared her shoulders and walked up to the bar, raising a hand to attract the attention of the barkeep.
“Local cider, please.”
The man nodded and Claire settled herself on a stool and, feeling less conspicuous, took her time studying her surroundings more closely. Individuals and small groups were scattered here and there, their collective chatter on par with the music playing through speakers overhead.
She accepted her drink and handed over the required amount of cash. She took a sip and smiled at the taste. 'Life was too short to not enjoy the drink in your hand' as her old Commanding Officer used to say. Half way through her drink the group of men huddled by one of the open fireplaces caught her attention again when a pained grunt travelled across the room.
Just ignore it, Beauchamp. Enjoy your drink, Beauchamp, she thought to herself and for a moment she managed to do just that. Until she couldn’t stand it any longer. "Dammit, Beauchamp."
Claire got up, drink still in hand, and made her way over, their discussion becoming clearer with every step.
“Well, what if I-”
“-I dinnae need yer help!”
“Ye cannae-”
“-one phone call-”
“For the love of-”
There, amongst five or so men, each talking over the top of one another, was a young red haired man sitting on a chair cradling his arm. So busy arguing amongst themselves, they barely noticed her presence.
“It’s fine-”
“-force the joint back, myself.”
“Don’t you dare!” Without thinking, Claire pushed through to stand in front of the injured man. “Stand aside at once!”
“What??”
“Stand aside, she says!”
“Here,” she turned to the loud and overly short bearded man closest to her and handed him her glass. “Hold this.”
“Hold this, she says!”
Claire tuned out the discussion around them and focused on the task at hand.
“Now, what’s happened?”
“Ugh,” the patient grunted as he shifted in his seat, “landed on the ice wrong. Cannae lift my arm without it hurtin’.”
“How long ago?”
“An hour mayhap.”
Claire nodded in understanding and reached out a hand. “May I?”
The man looked at her for a long moment before taking a swig from a glass on the table and visibility gritting his teeth in anticipation. He nodded his consent.
“Do you have a history of instability in this shoulder?” She asked as she palpated the area gently.
“I’ve dislocated it once before,” he admitted with a grimace.
“Or twice,” a gruff and somewhat familiar voice added in, the man responsible for... introducing her to this pub, she suspected.
“Or twice,” her patient reluctantly admitted. “But no’ in a long while.”
“Hmmm… you really ought to see a doctor. Are there any clinics open this time of night?” When he didn’t answer she turned to look at the other men who in turn were equally nonvocal and completely unhelpful. “No? Well, it looks to me like you’ve suffered from shoulder subluxation - a partial dislocation, that is - and it’s fixed itself already. So long as you keep your arm immobile and make sure to rest, I don’t see why you can’t wait to see your doctor tomorrow.” Decision made, Claire stood up and turned to the others. “Fetch me a long piece of cloth or a belt. And some ice from the bar.”
"Fetch me, she says!”
“Ach, shut up ye drunk eejit and do as the lady says,” a tall, bald headed man with a thick grey beard Claire hadn’t noticed before came forward, his authority evident in how quickly the so-called ‘drunk eejit’ complied.
Requests quickly in hand, she turned back to her waiting patient and went about efficiently setting his arm in a sling, the young man following her movements closely.
“Taking a guess you’ve done this before?”
“I’m a nurse,” Claire shared as she pulled the knot tight.
“Aye, you work at the hospital? I havenae seen ye there before.”
“No, not that kind of nurse,” Claire chuckled at Jamie’s confused look and handed him the ice pack before clarifying. “An Army Nurse. But now I have to say I'm curious. Do you frequent the hospital often, Mr…?”
“Fraser," he paused as if waiting for something. A particular reaction from her perhaps? "But you can call me Jamie.”
“Claire,” she reciprocated with a smile. “Under normal circumstances I would offer to shake your hand but considering your current predicament I must advise against it and instead remind you to keep the ice on your shoulder for no longer than 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Do you have a physical therapist?”
“Aye, he does,” the bald headed man came forward once again, a hand on Jamie’s good shoulder. “And I’ll make sure he sees them on the morrow.”
“Wonderful,” Claire nodded with pleasure and turned back to Jamie, hands planted firmly on her hips. “Now, I believe you owe me a drink.”
A/N: Candy canes. Candy canes everywhere! From here we diverge from canon-adjacent and take a path that is much more Hallmark. // Are you looking forward to seeing what figurine will be waiting for Claire tomorrow?
