Audrey Grace in a vintage outfit! She went on a shopping trip with friends in a 1950s Thneedville and found some stuff she liked. 😊 I had fun researching dresses, sweaters and shoes, also this piece [link] from the Lies of P OST was the music I listened to the most while painting, I think the vibes fit...🥹 Click the readmore below to see a video of my WIPs!

"I have my happiness, which I guard like a wolf, and I have authority now and a certain amount of daring, which, if you remember correctly, I never had before." (Two Serious Ladies – Jane Bowles, 1943)
the first half of the 1940s was, of course, dominated by world war two. just as with world war one, more women were involved in the war effort, and those who weren't often took the jobs dominated by men. icons such as rosie the riveter propagated a sort of idealized "tough girl" image, with her denim coveralls and clenched fists – yet red lips, defined lashes, and thin brows. she was just masculine enough to fit the mold of serving one's country, and still feminine enough for the general public to accept. once again, fabric rationing led to certain garments and styles being reused and revamped. some designers, like claire mccardell, worked within the confines of wool and silk rationing to create clothing made of denim and jersey knits. "ready-to-wear" clothing was becoming more popular, especially in the united states, allowing fashion trends to spread faster and further than before. at the end of the decade, christian dior debuted his "new look", which would set the stage for the iconic mid-century silhouette: cinched waists (thanks a lot, dior...), full skirts, and round shoulders. this "new look" emphasized the stereotypical ideal of femininity and ruled post-war fashion.
okay, maybe the tangent about claire mccardell wasn't that important, but i did just see a museum exhibit about her, so i wanted to include it.
(ps. i know 1942 isnt entirely accurate but it was a fit of inspiration, and it takes like 20 minutes to get my game open so i was not willing to exit when i already had two looks done)

🔸 "The "Oxford Arm" Inn, London, demolished in 1878, was an excellent example of the galleried Inns now becoming every year more scarce. As was said by a writer in the Athenaeum of May 20th 1876: "Despite the confusion, the dirt, and the decay. he who stands in the yard of this ancient Inn may get an excellent idea of what it was like in the days of its prosperity, when not only travellers in coach or saddle rode in and out of the yard, but poor players and mountebanks set up their stage for the entertainment of spectators, who hung over the galleries or looked on from their rooms - a name by which the boxes of a theatre were first known." The "Oxford Arms" was situate, as shown in No.3, at the end of a short lane leading out of the west side of Warwick Lane, Paternoster Row. The buildings were disposed on four sides of a large courtyard, being bonded on the west by the old City Wall. But little is known of the history of the "Oxford Arms." That it existed before the Great Fire is proved by an advertisement in the London Gazette for March, 1672-3, quoted in Cunningham's Handbook of London:- "These are to give notice that Edward Bartlett, Oxford Carrier, hath removed his Inn in London from the Swan at Holborn Bridge to the Oxford Armes in Warwick Lane, where he did Inn before the Fire. His coaches and wagons going forth on their usual days, Mondays, Wednesdays and Frydays. He hath also a hearse, with all things convenient to carry a Corps to any part of England." The Inn was within the area of the Fire, in which it no doubt perished, being rebuilt, however, a few years later on the old plan. In Strype's Stowe we read that the "Oxford Arms" was much frequented by persons attending the Market, i.e., Newgate Market, close by. #victorianchaps #victorian #retro #goodolddays #vintage #history #london🇬🇧 #oldphoto #1870s #dickensian #streetlife #nostalgia (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CodNGiSAsCH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Shoes in the 1920s
Tumblr media
The most popular shoes in the roaring twenties were pumps with one or two several straps and a modest 2-inch heel. For Summer days and sporty activities, there were canvas flats, two-tone saddle shoes, and the first canvas sneaker. Young flappers made galoshes the fashionable boot to wear in Winter.
Shoe heels for daywear were sturdy “Louis” heels, also called tango, curved, Spanish or vintage heels. However, the curved heels went out of fashion in the mid-20s, being replaced by the sturdier military or Cuban heel. Toes became almost square at the end of the 20s.
Most shoes were made of leather. The most popular were: calfskin, kid, suede, lizard, alligator and goat. Daytime shoes consisted of both matte finish and shiny patent leather. Meanwhile, evening shoes required heels that sparkled with a high sheen. Colours for daytime shoes tended to be shades of black, brown, grey and beige.
Indoor shoes were pretty satin, grosgrain, brocade, velvet or lamb skin materials. These could be worn in the evenings for dinner and dancing.
There were many different styles of shoes in the 1920s, for example:
-Strap Pumps
-Lattice Pumps
-Colonial Pumps
-Step-in Pumps
-T-strap Heels
Silver and gold painted pumps and strap heels were popular at the end of the decade. The height of the heel was raised to almost 3 inches. Many shoes designers hand-painted shoes in swirls of gold, silver, red and blue inspired by Asian or Greek motifs. Rhinestones, sequins or diamanté were added to many heels. The more ‘bling’, the better.
