(Retro & Vintage) Gaming Consoles #1 - PlayStation 1 (PS1) - Updated & Fixed
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, Mr. Procrastination has been squatting with me for a good while now. I have so much CC to upload but for some reason I never get around to it.
I’ll be making a collection of retro/vintage gaming consoles and thought I’d start with a tribute to the Sony Playstation 1, dedicated to my Hubby who grew up playing on the O.G. gaming consoles!
This is a set with a total of 5 items! 1. PlayStation (PS1) Game Console - Decorative 2. PlayStation (PS1) Game Console - Functional (Requires City Living EP) 3. PlayStation (PS1) Controller / Gamepad - Decorative 4.  PlayStation (PS1) Controller / Gamepad - Functional/Override for “Game Console Controller” from City Living EP. (As Shown in the picture below) ⤵️ 5. PlayStation (PS1) Controller / Gamepad - Functional/Override (in Simlish)! (install EITHER the simlish override or the regular override, not both.)

The world got very excited about convolution reverbs for a couple of years, but it seems that more traditional algorithmic designs are making a comeback. After all, convolution processors are still pretty CPU-hungry, so in situations where you want three or four reverbs in a mix, they can be impractical. Moreover, they don't tend to offer as much flexibility as their older brethren, and although they provide unsurpassed realism, it turns out that real doesn't always mean better, at least in your average pop mix.

The latest entry in the retro reverb stakes comes from Nomad Factory, whose Blueverb DRV2080 is allegedly 'intended to recreate the warm qualities of vintage-style digital reverbs from the '80s'. And this is pretty much exactly what it does. It's not the sort of plug-in that offers endless potential for tinkering; instead, it provides just a few basic controls, enabling you to get a sound fast, without crippling your PC in the process. Control over the reverb itself is limited to seven familiar parameters, all of which do pretty much what you'd expect, and the output can be shaped by a simple two-band EQ.
It's the sound that counts, and to my ears, DRV2080 does a decent job. Although there appears to be only one reverb algorithm, it's flexible enough to deliver smooth long halls and some fairly recognisable plates, as well as more subtle ambiences. None of them is exactly convincing as an emulation of a real acoustic space, but they can work very well on vocals and other sources within a mix. I particularly liked the plate presets, though I found that their usefulness on vocals was limited by a strong tendency to exaggerate sibilants, which the basic two-band EQ didn't really help with. Overall, however, this is a surprisingly versatile plug-in with a likeable, rich sound that's a lot more dense than that of many algorithmic reverbs. CPU load is minimal, and if you're looking for something that will provide an affordable step up from the reverbs bundled with DAWs like Cubase or Pro Tools, this is well worth considering. There are quite a lot of high-quality mastering limiters around these days, and it seems that if you want to stand out from the crowd, you have to offer something a bit out of the ordinary. Thus, Sony's Oxford Limiter has its unique Enhance function, while Waves have developed the clever multi-band technology used in their L3.
At first glance, Kjaerhus Audio's MPL1 seems to lack a comparable USP, but closer inspection reveals some very interesting and innovative design features. It's a wide-band, stereo plug-in, and offers all the luxuries you'd expect from a high-end limiter. It uses a look-ahead algorithm and oversamples the incoming audio, enabling it to detect and limit inter-sample peaks. There's excellent level metering, which displays both peak and RMS output levels, and the Pro version includes some helpful additions, such as an input gain control (I know we should all be paying more attention to gain structure in our DAW mixes, but sometimes it's just easier to attenuate the gain on the master channel than to bring every track in your mix down by 3dB!). In terms of the features on offer, the only thing that might be a negative point for some is the relative lack of output dithering options. It's TPDF noise shaping or nothing; I confess I'm unlikely to lose any sleep over that, but the golden-eared might.
So what makes MPL1 special? Two things, as far as I can see. The first is its unusually flexible and musically sympathetic way of setting the limiter release times. There's a manual Release control, but you can also introduce a programme dependent release algorithm. If you do so, the Release control then sets a maximum release time for the programme dependent algorithm, so you can combine the benefits of programme dependent release with the control of a manual system. This isn't so unusual in its own right, but the Pro version goes further. An additional PDR Amount control allows you to introduce a variable amount of programme dependence into the release, while a PDR Time parameter modifies 'the time factor used to identify peaks in the music', and you can also adjust Compression Smoothing, which controls the shape of the transition between hard limiting and the release phase.
The second out of the ordinary feature is, as far as I know, unique to the Pro edition of MPL1, and Kjaerhus say they've applied for a patent to protect it. We're used to being told that stereo linking is essential when using any dynamics process across a stereo mix, in order to prevent the image from wandering, but MPL1 's design challenges this dogma. The idea seems to be that when limiting is triggered by transient peaks in one channel, the audible side-effects of reducing gain in both channels can be noticeable, but that within a short enough time-frame, the disturbance to the stereo image is not. So, what MPL1 Pro allows you to do is, in effect, to set an attack time for stereo linking. This can be varied from 0 to 100 milliseconds. At the former extreme, MPL1 Pro behaves like any other limiter. At the latter, the level in the left channel would need to exceed the threshold for a tenth of a second before limiting in the right channel is triggered.
You’ll be able to race everything from front wheel drive subcompacts to roaring ’60s era muscle cars by the time you’re done, with a few supercar exotics thrown in for good measure. As you impress the locals, you’ll build your own racing gang or team; each additional character actually races along side you and can help you out in a pinch. Wins also net you cash, which you can turn over into seemingly endless varieties of car customization or new vehicles that you’ll be able to unlock as your influence and your list of winning races increases. And of course, there’s straight-up slaloms through busy city streets with a pack of opponents on your tail (or in front of you, depending on how good you are). Each race you win will earn prestige, not only for you but for your little racing club and its control of territory. https://blogvan883.tumblr.com/post/652771639720886272/download-need-for-speed-carbon-for-mac.
As you'd expect, higher attack times for stereo linking can tend to make the stereo image unstable, but used with moderation, I think the results bear out the designers' reasoning: momentary limiting in one channel only didn't disrupt overall imaging, even on headphones. That said, on my test material the benefits were pretty subtle — rather more so, for instance, than those of the Enhance function in Sony's Oxford Limiter. Likewise, the effect of the Smooth control is often hard to notice, though in most respects, the flexible release settings provide clear benefits. In general, MPL1 performs flawlessly, and it's one of the most flexible wide-band mastering limiters I've used. At barely $100 for the basic version and under $150 for the Pro version, it's also excellent value for money. Sam Inglis

Voxengo Marquis
Format: PC VST
Tumblr media
The basic EQs, compressors and effects included in your average DAW program can do a yeoman job, but they often lack flavour while they are doing it. So if you yearn for more upscale effects, but the cash (or credit) is lacking, you could do worse than checking out Voxengo's range. Their Marquis compressor is a step up from the native compressors I've dealt with, even the higher-end versions such as Sonar 's Sonitus Compressor. Voxengo call it a universal compressor since it can be used on individual tracks during mixing, on a buss or, in a pinch, pressed into service as a mastering plug-in. Preset management follows the VST standard, while the right-hand side of the compressor looks and acts like most others, with knobs for Threshold, Ratio, Knee, Attack and Release.
Things get interesting, or at least complex, with the more unusual controls. These include Force, which mixes in a compressed signal with zero release time, and Dry, which allows you to mix the uncompressed signal with the compressed signal to achieve 'parallel' compression. There are also a number of ways to modify the detection and compression algorithms. For instance, the former can be switched between Classic and Round modes, while the plug-in can emulate both a conventional 'feed-forward' design and an optical compressor circuit. You can choose from three different attack and release behaviours, while optional Soft and Sharp modes introduce different varieties of harmonic coloration. You can also engage a phase-linear mode for mastering and other sensitive applications. Switching any single button won't always have a dramatic effect on the sound, but in combination, they are sure to.
Another nice feature is side-chain filtering, with a spectrum analyser to view the results and the ability to listen to the filtered side-chain signal. You can click and drag four breakpoints on a graphical EQ curve, with the Shift, Ctrl and Alt keys providing variable control over the dragging.
Finally, not only does Marquis offer a programme dependent release option, but it allows you to edit the programme dependent 'release contour' in detail. In programme dependent mode, the release time you set manually is treated as a minimum, and the 'release contour' provides three knobs for altering the amount by which the programme-dependence can extend that release time. Raising the values produces a steeper slope, meaning less variation in the release time, while lowering the number straightens the green line to the horizontal, permitting more variation (and hence, on average, a longer release time).
The detailed editing available means that tweakheads can burn up lots of time trying to emulate the sound of their favourite hardware compressors, but for those who want to adjust and move on, there are enough presets and big-picture sculpting tools to get on to the next project quickly. Although Marquis can sound transparent, it can do 'vintage', too, without breaking into a sweat. The drum buss collection provides good starting points, and any preset with 'movement' in the name does just that. They can turn your mild-mannered loop into a seething, pumping thing. Of course, you don't have to mangle sound, and it is easy to add a little glue, sparkle or bass to individual tracks or entire mixes. It is easier to hear it working (in a good way!) than most native DAW compressors, since it doesn't sound like it is straining to affect the sound. Despite its complexity, Marquis manages to stay CPU-friendly, too. This is a plug-in that covers a lot of sonic ground, yet is fairly inexpensive for the quality it provides. Alan Tubbs

Chandler EMI TG12413
Formats: Mac & PC TDM & RTAS
Tumblr media
The best-known studios of the '60s and '70s all had their own, identifiable sound, and none more so than Abbey Road. Lots of factors contributed to the unique sonic fingerprint of EMI's in-house studio, from its engineering practices to the shape of the recording rooms and their lush reverb chambers. Among those factors were the numerous pieces of equipment that were custom-built or extensively modified by EMI staff, and of those, the TG-series desks introduced in the late '60s hold pride of place.
Chandler already make hardware compressors, limiters, preamps and channel strips based on the TG-series design, but TG12413 is their first plug-in. Available for Pro Tools LE and TDM on Mac and PC, it emulates the compressor/limiter built into every channel on the TG-series mixers. It's authorised to an iLok key, and installed by the slightly clunky but effective method of copying two DPM-format files into your Pro Tools plug-ins folder.
One glance at the interface tells you that controllability isn't the prime reason for this plug-in's existence. There are only four controls, all of which are stepped and can be moved either by clicking and dragging, or simply by clicking the appropriate number on the scale. The most basic control is a switch that sets whether the plug-in should act as a compressor or a limiter. These modes have fixed attack times of 44 and eight milliseconds respectively, while release time is adjustable using a six-position Recovery switch. In limiter mode, the fastest release available is 50ms and the slowest two seconds, and switching to compressor mode scales these up by about five times.
As is the case in many vintage dynamics processors, there's no Threshold setting. To get more compression, you simply up the input gain to drive the unit harder. On the original unit, the input gain control was rather unconventional and not especially intuitive, and sensibly, Chandler have provided two versions of the plug-in. One is faithful to the original, while the other has a conventional gain control. And, apart from an output gain control, that's it. A retro-style VU meter displays gain reduction: it's not the most helpful visual feedback, but this isn't the sort of processor you'd use in situations where you need absolute precision. Its raison d'être is to add character to your tracks, and boy, does it do that.
I can't ever recall testing a plug-in compressor that can match TG12413 for sheer punchiness. In compressor mode, it can pump like a nodding donkey in an oil field, but I found I used it more in limiter mode, where the snappier time constants seemed to work for almost everything. The attack is just slow enough to let transients through, so it can add substance to a drum track without losing the initial 'crack' of the snare. Alternatively, it can nail a vocal to the front of the mix without sucking the life from it. Buying TG12413 alone won't turn your mixes into Dark Side Of The Moon, but you may well experience moments when it really does seem to bring a little slice of Abbey Road into your life. Sam Inglis

The Cameras We Love With Stunning JPEG Images
If you like to shoot for the JPEG and want a camera that will let you back away from photo editing, these are the cameras worth a look.
We recently posted an opinion piece about why you should shoot for the JPEG instead of the RAW. RAW files certainly have their place, and they can allow all manner of edits during post-processing, but not all photographers want to spend countless hours behind their computers: they’d much rather be out shooting. After all, this is what we love to do more than anything. If you’re a photographer who wants to break free from the rigors of editing images, and you just want to shoot and enjoy the images you create, the cameras we rounded up after the break are the ones you need to take a closer look at.
There is no don’t about it; when it comes to getting the absolute most out of your images, editing the RAW files your camera produces is the way to go. Having complete control over your images is great, but it can also be incredibly time-consuming. Unless I am shooting for a client, I find myself aiming to shoot for the JPEG more often than not these days. It’s such a nice feeling to know I don’t have to edit pics every time I take my camera out. Image processors inside modern cameras are incredibly powerful: they can work wonders with your images. When you also consider the film simulations and art filters many manufacturers now include in their cameras, it makes even more sense to have fun with the JPEGS your camera can produce.
Tumblr media
A straight, out-of-camera JPEG from the Canon EOS M6 II
All of the cameras we have listed below can produce outstanding JPEGS. You can pick these cameras up, shoot to your heart’s content, and then instantly share your images without having to transfer files to your computer to tweak a myriad of settings. It’s quite liberating. If you want to shoot for the JPEG, check out the cameras below.
Shoot for the JPEG With Fujifilm’s X Pro 3
Tumblr media
When it comes to cameras that produce mind-blowing JPEGS, the Fujifilm X-Pro 3 tops the list. This beautiful, 26.1 megapixel, rangefinder-style camera is packed with gorgeous film simulations that can give your images a unique look right out of the camera. You can mimic some of Fujifilm’s emulsions (Provia, Acros, Velvia, Classic Chrome and more) right out of the box, which means you will love the images it produces and you’ll never have to step near a computer for photo editing if you don’t wish to. Here are the pros and cons from our full review:
Pros
Superia is beautiful (Classic neg)
We love the lack of a major screen
Autofocus can be fine-tuned for different situations
Everyone loves the look of Classic neg
You can push the shadows for forever and get details – the highlights not as much, but they’re still there
The screen helps you stay focused and aware
USB C charging ensures that you can keep using the camera
Video features deliver pretty video
Arguably, you don’t need to edit the RAW files because the JPEGs let you do so much
For street and documentary shooting, the hidden screen will keep you in the zone when shooting
Face detection is fantastic when not trying to track erratic movements
Acros and clarity enhancements are going to make you fall in love with Fujifilm all over again
The Chrome effect for skies is subtle and very nice
Autofocus is fantastic for events and most professional work
Fujifilm’s collection of small primes pair wonderfully with this camera
The best camera to embrace high ISO noise on the market
Using the OVF will prolong battery life at the expense of slower autofocus
This is less of a street camera than a documentary and event shooter’s camera
Multiple exposure mode is a very welcome addition
Very good battery life
Cons
Has problems keeping subjects in focus when they’re continuously moving
When you need the screen, it’s a bit of an annoyance; like when photographing a portrait subject in motion
This camera desperately needed Blackout Free EVF shooting
Touchscreen menu navigation should be on this camera
Autofocus needs improvements
Enhancing the clarity makes the camera take extra time to render the image
The battery life in long term use is about on par with the new Sony Z batteries
For street shooting, the wide and tracking AF area still lets you select a zone, but it shouldn’t. This can throw off shooting in real-life street situations
Shooting from the hip? You may accidentally hit the function button and not the shutter release
Exposure dial needs a locking mechanism
Multiple Exposure mode saves the final images only as JPEGs
Buy now: $1,729
Shoot for the JPEG With the Olympus OMD E-M1 III
Tumblr media
Like Fujifilm, Olympus has been bundling unique and creative filters into their cameras for many years. The JPEGS from the E-M1 III are always fantastic, but they can be even better when used in conjunction with filters such as Monochrome, Vintage, Pop Art, Grainy Film, Pinhole, Diorama, and more. We called the E-M1 III a travelers gem, so if you want a camera that can come along with you on your travels and produce images that don’t need to be touched, check out the Olympus E-M1 III. Here are the pros and cons from our full review:
Pros
Feels nice when shooting for a long time
We like the shutter sound
Good continuous autofocus which does tracking
The processor is fantastic
The art filters continue to make Olympus unique amongst other camera brands. Shooting surfers with the cross-process and the vintage filter was so fun. Same with grainy black and white.
Live composite is so incredibly pleasant, along with Starry AF
It survived sand and saltwater
Continuous AF+Tracking works well with wide angles
The custom shooting mode switch on the back is something every adventure brand should have
This is the foundation for an Olympus camera we’d want to bring with us everywhere
Handheld high res shot continues to be one of the best things ever
Face detection works on monkeys
Cons
Battery life in the heat and the cold
C-AF + Tracking is useless with telephoto lenses
Why no touchscreen menus?
Olympus’s menu system continues to give headaches
Some of the parts seem very dated
A top screen LCD could have made shooting easier
Why couldn’t it have Dual UHS-II Card slots?
Above ISO 1600, you really need the art filters to take the most advantage of the otherwise too-grainy sensor
Could really use no blackout in the EVF
We couldn’t find spot metering AF linked to the face (or at least it didn’t work for us)
Buy now: $1,799
Shoot for the JPEG With the Ricoh GR III
Tumblr media
In our review, we said that the JPEG images that came from the Ricoh GR III were so good that the option to be able to shoot in DNG simply wasn’t needed. The color profile simulations that can be used to enhance your images are simply fantastic, and we were overjoyed with the results out of the box. If you want a pocket-friendly APS-C camera that’s perfect for street photography with its 28mm f2.8 lens, the GR III is the way to go. Here are the pros and cons from our full review:
Pros
We are smitten with the JPEGs and the color profile simulations
Snap focus is nice
Sharp image quality
The small size of the camera
Good battery life if you leave the screen off
USB charging
Touchscreen
Image stabilization is nice
Cons
We don’t really care for the RAW files. You may as well just embrace the flaws of the otherwise unique image quality.
Autofocus is very slow: I’m not even sure why it’s there to begin with.
No weather sealing is a big problem.
This camera desperately needed a faster aperture lens. Otherwise, the sensor should have started at ISO 200.
Deep menus
No pop-up flash
Lots of folks have been having issues with firmware updates
Buy now: $899.95
Tumblr media
Captured with the affordable Leica TL2
Pro Tip: When you shoot for the JPEG, the files your camera produces will be much smaller in size when compared to RAW files, but don’t get lulled into a false sense of security because you can still fill an SD card up quite quickly with JPEG images. Always make sure that you have plenty of spare SD cards in your camera bag or on your person so that you always have more storage space for when you max out a card, or if one becomes corrupted.
Shoot for the JPEG With Canon’s EOS M6 Mk II
Tumblr media
The Canon EOS M6 II stole our JPEG loving heart when we reviewed it at the end of 2019. We love the form factor, the 32.5 megapixel sensor is the largest available in any APS-C platform, and it is capable of greatness. Couple it with the image processor that turns out clean, colorful JPEG images that are full of detail, and you have a winner on your hands. Every image in our review was a JPEG straight from the camera: that’s how much we loved the output from the Canon M6 II. Here are the pros and cons from our full review:
Pros
Beautiful colors
The sound of the shutter will appeal to long-time photographers
It feels like a solid, impressive camera
Canon’s implementation of the Touch and Drag AF system is the best it’s ever been with the Canon EOS M6 Mk II
Pretty stellar battery life
You’ve got more megapickles than you need. U DONT NEED MOAR MEGAPICKLES!!!!
Cons
We really wish it were weather sealed
An integrated viewfinder would have put this over the top
Buy now: $849
Shoot for the JPEG With the Olympus OMD EM5 Mark III
Tumblr media
You can expect the same great quality JPEG images from the Olympus E-M5 III as you can from the company’s E-M1 III and E-M1 II thanks to the same sensor, and inclusion of all of the great art filters. The biggest difference is that the E-M5 III is smaller, lighter, and quite a bit cheaper. We loved the gorgeous retro styling of the Olympus E-M5 III, we lauded the weather sealing, and of course, we loved the images it could produce. If you want a Mirrorless camera that has a small form factor and that can pump out great images when you shoot for the JPEG, the E-M5 III might be for you. Here are the pros and cons from our full review:
Pros
Beautiful retro styling
Excellent image quality
Robust weather sealing
Reliable image stabilization
Accurate autofocus
Compact form factor
Built-in Live Composite and 50 MP High Resolution shooting modes are highly effective
Cons
Form factor can be too compact for some
Plasticky build quality
Single UHS-II SD Card slot
Lacks dedicated joystick
Poor battery life
Convoluted menu systems
Buy now: $999
Shoot for the JPEG With the Leica TL2
Tumblr media
When we first got our hands on the Leica TL2, we weren’t quite sure what to make of it, but soon we found out that this little gem of a camera was very good. While we weren’t blown away with the versatility of the RAW files, we loved the JPEGS that this 24.3 Megapixel APS-C Leica produced. The build quality is excellent as you would expect, and it can fire of 7fps with the mechanical shutter and 20fps with the electronic shutter. Pair this camera up with some great L mount glass, get the exposure right in-camera, and enjoy the results that the JPEGS will give you. It’s that simple. Here are the pros and cons from our full review:
Pros
Super solid build quality
Nice, big screen
Simple touchscreen interface, but can get complicated depending on how you configure it
Feels better in the hand than you’d think
Good image quality
Fantastic battery life
Cons
Autofocus is fast, but not fast enough for something like street photography
Buy now: $1,699
Shoot for the JPEG With Fujifilm’s X-T30
Tumblr media
It would be remiss of us to forget about the little Fujifilm that could; the Fujifilm X-T30. This camera is small in size, but it packs a big punch. The little brother to the X-T3 features the same 26.1 Megapixel X-Trans sensor as the X-T3 and the X-Pro 3, and it features all of those glorious Fujifilm simulations as well. Shoot for the JPEG and X-T30 will allow you to back away from the computer and spend more time out shooting, which is what we all want to do. Here are the pros and cons from our full review:
Pros
Solid construction that we’ve come to expect and love about Fujifilm cameras
Compact
Lightweight
Almost everything that made the X-T3 such a hit
Cons
Lacks in-body image stabilization and weather sealing
Rear touchscreen-only tilts up and down
Perhaps a tad too compact
The new joystick is awkwardly placed on the rear of the camera body
Unremarkable battery life
Buy now: $899

How I Podcast: Let’s Talk About Cats’ Mary Phillips-Sandy and Lizzie Jacobs
The beauty of podcasting is that anyone can do it. It’s a rare medium that’s nearly as easy to make as it is to consume. And as such, no two people do it exactly the same way. There are a wealth of hardware and software solutions open to potential podcasters, so setups run the gamut from NPR studios to USB Skype rigs.
We’ve asked some of our favorite podcast hosts and producers to highlight their workflows — the equipment and software they use to get the job done. The list so far includes:
Broken Record’s Justin Richmond Criminal/This Is Love’s Lauren Spohrer Jeffrey Cranor of Welcome to Night Vale Jesse Thorn of Bullseye Ben Lindbergh of Effectively Wild My own podcast, RiYL
This week, it’s a nice, in-depth workflow from Mary Phillips-Sandy and Lizzie Jacobs, the host and producer (respectively) of Let’s Talk About Cats. Now in its second season, the Acast network show sits down with artists, musicians and other creatives to, well, talk about their cats. Recent interviews include Spin Doctor Chris Barron and adult actress/writer, Stoya.
Episodes can be found on the official Let’s Talk About Cats website and purveyors of finer podcasts everywhere.
We record most of our episodes at our network’s office in New York. They’ve set up a little recording room that Acast shows can use — it’s convenient, and there are always cute dogs hanging around. No cats, though.
The Acast space has ElectroVoice RE20 microphones with windscreens on ElectroVoice 309A mounts. Love that warm, classic sound. Also, I (Mary) am self-conscious about my S’s, and these mics do a good job of controlling them. The headphones are Sony MDR-7506s. They’re… fine. Over-ear headphones always kind of suck for me because they squish my glasses. The headphones run through a PreSonus HP4 amp, which lets everyone set their levels exactly where they want them.
The studio board is a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 and the DAW is Hindenburg, which we only use for recording. Lizzie edits and mixes the show at home with ProTools and her beloved Sennheiser HD 380 pros. She has to be listening to a lot of Cats before her head hurts from the headphones. But she doesn’t wear glasses.
We try to avoid remote interviews. The more we do the show, the more we’ve realized that it works best when the guest is here in person. We make fast transitions between segments, and one bit (the Cat Quiz) involves handing over a special prize, so getting that IRL reaction is important. (Lizzie cutting in here. Mary’s prizes are next-level. It’s incredible what she’s able to find on eBay, Etsy and I don’t even know where else. The show would not be what it is without them, or without Mary’s research skills. Every week she digs up something like a vintage perfume packaged with a cat figurine in a feather boa, or musical theater-themed cat stickers.)
When remote is the only option, we’ll do Skype with Ladiocast on the studio laptop. We also ask our guests to record locally with whatever prosumer or office studio gear they can get their hands on — anything to make their voices sound closer.
This may be obvious, but Dropbox is essential to our process. We have a shared folder with Acast where studio tracks get uploaded so Lizzie (or Virginia, who helps with production) can grab them. We also use it to share clips and images for social media. Speaking of which, we’ve been using Headliner to make captioned preview videos for Instagram and Twitter. Very convenient, highly recommend. We are not graphic designers, so we use Canva to make images for our social accounts and website, which we built on Squarespace, using one of our favorite podcast’s promo codes for a discount.
Scripts, research, booking trackers, scheduling and everything else happens in Google Drive/Calendar, which we’d be lost without. In season one we worked with a human for transcription, but she went back to grad school, so now we use Otter. It’s not perfect, but it’s by far the best automated transcription tool we’ve found, and you can’t beat the price. I (Mary again) actually like taking some time to go through and correct transcripts, because it’s a good way to become (even more) aware of your verbal tics. By the fourth “of course,” you want to travel back in time and slap yourself.

Intellivision Amico: Exklusive Entwicklungen
Intellivision verriet 2018 schon allerlei Spielenamen.
Microsurgeon
Atlantis
Demon Attack
Dracula
Beauty and the Beast
Ice Trek
Swords & Serpents
Dragonfire
Truckin’
Miner 2049er
Super Burgertime
Bad Dudes
Caveman Ninja
Moon Patrol
R-Type
10 Yard Fight
Lode Runner
Spelunker
Kung-Fu Master
MotoRace USA
Tropical Angel
Archon
ToeJam & Earl
Unklarheiten.

How the Internet Revolutionized the Musician and Their Work
It’s easy to get so caught in the beat coming from that radio playlist on Spotify, that we don’t really think about how this artist came about, or even how this song got on Spotify! So many possibilities came as the internet enter the mainstream space, such as social media, knowledge availability, distribution. Band pages on Myspace, tutorials on YouTube, downloading entire instruments; things are very different compared to just a few decades ago.
The internet has changed how musicians work substantially. One of the more straightforward ways is how quickly and easily work can be done remotely. Recordings, tracks, demos and whole project files can be shared in minutes. Musicians can record and edit projects simultaneously thanks to software like Ohm Studio.
This level of speedy communication has also enhanced an artist’s ability to distribute their music online themselves. Many sites allow artists to do this, such as SoundCloud and Bandcamp, but even sites like YouTube are still very applicable to this category. This gives the artist much more control over their work. Typically, a music label like Universal Music Group, or Sony Music would handle how music distributed. With this new way of communication and publishing, an artist could interface with their fan base and a one-to-one level. The trade-off being the need to build an audience from the ground up.
This links directly into social media and how artists present themselves online. Once again this was typically reserved for an expensive and talented marketing team but in the modern case is a responsibility being placed on the artist. Prior to either an artist would simply have to perform in front of many small audiences to gain notoriety.
Independent artists now take time to create, or even invest in their own pages and branding as a method of differentiating themselves from their fellow artists. These pages could be found as early as the mid-2000s on sites like Myspace, and similar pages still exist today on Facebook and Twitter. These pages acted as a hub for their music, shows, and any other information they’d like to share. This further deepens the one-to-one connection between the artist and their fans.
The internet has also brought knowledge to the masses, helping accelerate the learning process for musicians looking to do so. Books and classes were traditionally the methods to learn about music, or sound engineering, or even something like marketing. In contrast, the internet allows artists to delve very deeply into the nuts and bolts of these topics and more. Even books and classes are now distributed online for everyone’s convenience. Again, YouTube houses high quality videos on numerous topics from simple like the 12 notes, to the Circle of Fifths, to Polyrhythms. These are all topics you’d need to go out of your way to have access to.
However, many fields and their participants have benefited in very similar ways due to the internet. What about the tools that have been allotted to them through the internet?
Software for music production certainly existed prior to the internet but shortly after the internet became mainstream, this type of software became incredibly accessible. This new-found accessibility played a huge role in the number of people creating music. It no longer meant you needed expensive equipment or instruments to make something musical, just a common household computer.
Some of the most notable software is Apple’s Garageband and Imagine-Line’s FruitLoops (Now known as FL Studio). This type of software is known as a Digital Audio Workstation or DAW.
DAWs typically come with a variety of tools that allow the user to create melodies and patterns as a method of creating whole pieces of music. They also very often come with audio samples setup in a way to mimic a real-life instrument such as, pianos, guitars, or drums. These included virtual instruments can be lackluster for some artist’s needs and quickly created a market for higher quality virtual instruments.
Companies like 8DIO and Native Instruments create and digitally distribute virtual instruments that are sonically indistinguishable from their real-life counterparts. By meticulously recording every detail that the instrument produces and some well-put-together code, an artist can “download” a 1928 Steinway Grand Piano for a fraction of the cost. Whole orchestras, bass guitars, vintage synthesizers, even one of kind historic Italian violins, all able to be downloaded through the internet for the use in music pieces without ever having to even own an instrument.
Music has completely changed since the internet as entered our lives. Some people might argue that things have become worse. That things have become even more stale, and formulaic. I’d like to ask something of those people.
Perhaps in this new internet-age, don’t look down at the forest and point at the trees that stick out the most on the highest mountain. Go down there and take a good look at everything you see. You might just find something worth looking for. Check out these sites and see for yourself how they’ve changed the music making and distributing process! https://www.native-instruments.com/ https://8dio.com/ https://www.image-line.com/flstudio/ https://www.apple.com/mac/garageband/ https://www.ohmstudio.com/ https://www.facebook.com/ https://twitter.com/ https://myspace.com/ https://www.youtube.com/ https://bandcamp.com/ https://soundcloud.com/
