Southerness

Notable for the distinctive lighthouse, Southerness is derived from an earlier name Saulterness meaning saltmakers point.

The first Southerness Lighthouse was erected by merchants in Dumfries to aid navigation to the town and avoid treacherous rocks.

Southerness lighthouse has grown over the years. Originally it was a landmark for mariners built in 1748. It was raised in height in around 1785, then fitted with a light in the 1790s. Finally, it was raised again to its present height in 1842.

We have been working with students at Glasgow University to enable them to find out more about the history and ecology of the area. They have also been helping with beach cleans.

Nests

There are 5 nest names on the Galloway coast. Two Raven’s Nest, two Crow’s Nest and a Glede’s Nest - Gled is Scots for kite. While ravens and kites do return to reuse old nest sites this is rarely the case with crows, making a nest an unlikely landmark. Perhaps the use of nest is a corruption of the word ness meaning promontory.

Ravens Nest is the name of this promontory on the Dundrennan coast. By late January ravens are already starting to nest. They sometimes return to the same nest year after year. On the rugged shores of Galloway abandoned raven nests are often adopted by peregrines .
