And, those posing with them are the likes of Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, Arjun Rampal and Zareen Khan, to name a few. Not just Indian stars — the patrons include royalty and celebrities from across West Asia, including Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai.
What makes this Iranian kebab joint so popular? “The ambience and the taste we dish out,” says Majeed, who can easily converse in Indian languages like Hindi, Punjabi and Malayalam, apart from Arabic and English.
Mohammed Kazim, an Emirati businessman and a licensed tour guide who dines here frequently, agrees. “It’s a family-run restaurant and you get to interact with them, it’s very authentic and casual. It’s a place for everyone, which is exactly what Dubai represents. The food is also on another level: the taste is very pure to the culture they have lived in, and they use spices from the region,” says Kazim. The vibe is also a plus, with currencies from all over the world on display, as well as some vintage items.
Stars of the menu
Salman Khan and Zareen Khan have visited more than once. Majeed clearly remembers a visit by Shah Rukh Khan. “The star visited our restaurant with four of his friends and they ordered the mixed grill platter,” he recalls.
Asked about the most sought-after dishes by Indians, Majeed points to the kebabs. “Shish kebab and joojeh kebab are two dishes that are ordered most frequently by Indian visitors. The key ingredients are lime, salt, black pepper, yoghurt and, in some cases, saffron,” he says.
Majeed also shares a secret behind the taste — the meat is marinated for more than 24 hours. In a majority of dishes, dried lime is also used as a spice. Traditional Iranian dishes include mutton and chicken kebabs marinated in garlic yoghurt, as well as fragrant rice served with saffron and sumac, with a side of grilled tomatoes, onions and cucumbers. Fresh lavash is served piping hot, and for dessert, sticky dates are served with a delicious nutty sauce and mint tea.
Back for more
The food is affordable compared to other kebab joints. The cheapest on the menu is hummus, which will cost you seven UAE dirhams, while the most expensive dish is the Sultani dinner at 47 dirhams.
Tumblr media
The restaurant receives a great flux of people through the week. There is no difference whether it is a weekday or weekend, say regulars. “It’s always full. There are no reservations, it’s first come, first served. We see about 400 walk-ins on normal days and around 500-600 people on weekends,” adds Majeed.
“I have sweet memories of this place. My father used to bring me here when I was a child. Old habits die hard and I’m a regular visitor,” says Kazim.
The restaurant was set up by Mohammed Al Ansari, who left Gerash in southern Iran for Dubai in 1941. He first ran a grocery shop and bakery in Bur Dubai before setting up the restaurant 41 years ago, working there until he passed away in 2015 at the age of 83. His sons Majeed, Shahabuddin and Taleb now jointly run the restaurant.
And, what is Majeed’s special pick for a first-time Indian visitor? “I would recommend the mixed grill for Indian tourists. It works well when you are with a group of people or your family. The platter can work for an individual and also extend to serve 7-10 people.”
And whether or not you are pinned along with King Khan on this restaurant’s wall of fame, is up to you.
In this column, we take a peek at some of the most iconic restaurants

How Dubai Police's bicycle squad arrested 83 wanted criminals in 18 months
Tumblr media
The 26-member Dubai Police bicycle patrols have been able to arrest 83 wanted criminals, prevent potential crimes, and contribute to the arrest of residency violators and promoters of counterfeit goods who hide in residential and touristic alleys. Their rapid movement, mobility, and prompt response to reports are the most prominent features of the teams who contributed to finding lost children and uniting them with their parents in record time, as well as carrying out social tasks and engaging in community events to serve community members and visitors of tourist areas. Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, has praised Dubai Police bicycle patrols for they have demonstrated high efficiency and performance thanks to their high fitness levels and professional training. He also lauded their keenness to enhance the security and safety of the emirate of Dubai, and their valued contribution in establishing the reputation of Dubai Police in providing quality services to the public. The Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police confirmed that the establishment of bicycle teams, as field police patrols roaming the streets of the Emirate of Dubai, comes within the framework of reinforcing the strategic objectives of Dubai Police, namely, "Community Happiness", "Safe City" and "Innovation in Institutional Capacity". In addition to the Dubai Police Strategy for Sustainable Development serving the UAE Vision 2021 and the Dubai Plan 2021, to make the Emirate of Dubai the safest, most secure and sustainable city. "Dubai has become a global tourist destination attracting millions of visitors annually, and we are keen to achieve pioneering positions in all fields," Maj-Gen Al Marri added.  83 wanted criminals in 18 months For his part, Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Criminal Investigation Affairs, revealed that the cycling squad managed to arrest 83 wanted criminals in 18 months. He added that last year, the team carried out a campaign in cooperation with the Tourism Police Department in Umm Suqeim area near Burj Al Arab to achieve a zero crime rate which has succeeded in realising the required indicator during the specified period. Maj-Gen Al Mansouri pointed out that Dubai Police, to enhance the sense of stability and tranquillity of individuals, have established a bicycle division to enable the police to be present in all areas and internal and crowded roads, maintain security, prevent crime, protect public property, and save lives. He pointed out that the Dubai Police deal with more than 200 nationalities of different cultures, which requires professionalism and the search for more innovative and accurate methods to enhance the level of safety in our community. Security services  Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigations, said that Dubai Police aim to provide high-quality security services that stand to the reputation of Dubai Police as a world-class police force.  Brigadier Al Jallaf pointed out that last year the Dubai Police Bicycle Patrols, affiliated with the Crime Prevention Department, carried out a campaign in the Umm Suqeim area to achieve a zero crime rate. "In collaboration and cooperation with the Tourism Police Department, Dubai Police members provided visitors of various nationalities with awareness brochures and gifts," "the campaign also included engaging and activities and competitions interacted with the public," Brigadier Al Jallaf added. 26 heroes   The Head of Bicycle Patrols, First Lieutenant Mohammed Aman Al Zarooni, explained that Dubai Police have always been proactive in offering constructive, sophisticated and distinctive ideas that enhance the emirate's overall security and safety, hence the purpose of establishing a bicycle patrols division was sought by the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police who believed that such units would help to boost the sense of safety and security among residents especially in places which are not easily accessible for police patrols. Intensive Training  Lt. Al Zarouni added that members of the unit joined many courses to qualify them for specialised tasks, including courses in self-defence, crowd control and public order, first aid, firefighting, using taser guns, monitoring violations, CPR, shooting while moving on the bicycles, and descending on stairs. They are also required to undergo different refresher courses every three months, and to cycle for long distances not less than 20 kilometres to maintain their fitness. Unique experience It was very easy for Corporal Rashid Salim, from Naif Police Station, who joined the Dubai Police Bicycle Patrols after years of serving for vehicle patrols, to spot the difference between both security approaches. "The nature of reports received by regular patrols differs, in type and seriousness, from those received by the bicycle patrols." "We receive less serious reports and geographically limited as we have the advantage to move across narrow alleys and unpaved streets" Corporal Salim explained.  According to Corporal Salim, it is essential for bicycle patrol members to introduce themselves to guards and security personnel in residential areas, and to exchange channels of communication with them. "We also rely on having a vital connection with the command and control centre at the Dubai Police General HQ, as this speeds the response and provides necessary assistance when needed," Corporal Salim added. Lost child found Corporal Salim said that a Saudi national stopped them in the downtown area and sought the Dubai Police Bicycle Patrols' help after he had lost his four-year-old child. "We gathered some details and the description of the boy from the father, and we immediately initiated a search operation," "Having the advantage of being able to manoeuvre and move swiftly across the area, we located the child in just 30 minutes hand him over to his father who was extremely overwhelmed with our timely response" Salim recalled. Violators apprehended  Corporal Salim added that the nature of Dubai Police Bicycle Patrols' work enables them to seize vendors who specialise in selling and smuggling counterfeit goods.  Policeman Ahmad Al Saadi, from Al Muraqqabat Police Station, said it crucial for police bikers to have accurate security intuitions and the skills to read the body language of offenders and fugitives. Al Saadi explained that vendors promoting illegal or counterfeit goods usually hide in the inner alleys or narrow streets, which makes it difficult for regular police patrols to reach them. Foiling a robbery  Policeman Al Saadi recalled being in Al Murraqabt area when he and his teammates spotted two Asians walking suspiciously around shops wearing backpacks. "We stopped them and inspected their backpacks, and we found robbery tools and bolt cutters" "Investigations showed that they were planning on robbing one of the neighbouring shops" Al Saadi explained. Lost in crowd.found by Dubai Police Policeman Al-Saadi added that Dubai Police bicycle patrols, with the assistance of security personnel at the Burj Khalifa area, were able to find an eight-year-old child and return him to his mother in record time despite the dense crowd in the area. Al Saadi said such great achievements are always attributed to the unified efforts and reliable communication between the police and society. Cool Gadgets  Corporal Jassim Al Razi from Bur Dubai Police Station, said Dubai Police bicycles are equipped with some smart devices and communication technologies that enable them to exchange information quickly and track locations through smart applications. He noted that the Department of Government Communication had provided Dubai Police Bicycles Patrols with a smart map supported with an important database on each region.  He added that the members of the teams carry a number of gadgets including a German-made taser gun "TASER X2" that has a seven-metre range; a smart helmet that helps the team stay connected at all times, and to have direct connection with the central operating room to facilitate immediate connection in case of reporting incidents or calling for backup; a pair of smart gloves with turning indicators to warn other road users when riders wish to change their course from one track to another; and a waterproof, night vision, smart camera that live broadcasts the situation to the operating room. Advice for Your First Visit to the City of Gold, Dubai
Tumblr media
It’s been said many, many times – Dubai is a city like no other. An incredible amalgam of new and old, culture and fun. However, it can sometimes be quite overwhelming for first-time visitors. Because of the numerous options you have, you might find yourself unsure of what to do first, where to go, what to see. It’s easy to get swept up by the incredible diversity of the city. It has happened before: many wide-eyed visitors rush to see everything, only to end up not dedicating enough time to each adventure. If you don’t want to risk that, here is some advice for your first time in Dubai.
Tumblr media
It is best to visit Dubai between November and March
When to visit
The best time to visit Dubai is actually – in the winter! Yes, most people would like to book a summer vacation, hoping to enjoy the sun. But, remember, Dubai is in the desert and it is incredibly hot in the summer. While it is, of course, possible to enjoy Dubai in the summer, you should go when the weather is pleasant first. That way, you will be able to experience the city of gold to the fullest. So, for your first time in Dubai, it is best to choose a date between November and March. The weather is pleasant then and that’s when the city is at its most vibrant!
Learn about the culture
One of the most important pieces of advice for your first time in Dubai is – learn about the life there before going. Why is this important? Well, people often forget that not every country is the same. And while it is true that Dubai is incredibly tolerant, it is best to keep certain things in mind. After all, it is a sign of being good tourists to have respect towards the country that has welcomed them. You should never visit any country without previously reading up on the culture there. In this case, it is best to read up on the specific culture of Dubai.
Some of the basic things you should do is – try to abstain from cursing. There should be no crude hand gestures. When it comes to clothes, there are more conservative and more open-minded parts. When you’re at the beach, it’s fine to be in a bathing suit. However, make sure to cover up before you leave the beach. If you are visiting mosques, women should completely cover themselves. If you haven’t brought it with you, though, some mosques have special robes for visitors.
Check out the offer and make a plan for your first time in Dubai
No other city in the world has managed to become such a metropolis in such a short amount of time. Many people feel a bit overwhelmed during their first visit. But it all comes down to trying to manage your time in Dubai wisely. That is why it is best to first start off with a general plan. Try to be practical about your goals. With so many things to choose from, it is best to focus on the things you are truly keen on doing first.
On the other hand, it is pretty important to prepare for this adventure in advance, Physically and mentally. And how to do that? It is quite easy. On one side, you need to make a plan and stay organized. On the another one, you need to become physically active and prepare your body for what’s to come. We advise you to take a look at Dubai Personal Trainers and check out what they have to offer. Finding yourself a personal trainer has never been any easier, Grab the opportunity!
Dip in the vast pool of adventures
If this is your first time in Dubai, then it may be difficult for you to choose from the truly vast selection of adventures available in the city. There’s simply too many of them! What you can do, however, is think of it as a “taste test.” First, go and do as much as you can in the city of gold. Then, come back for more. It is often that people realize the splendor of the city and decide to return for their second (third, fourth…) visit. There’s always time and you will certainly love it enough to return soon. So, here are some things you can do during your first time in Dubai.
Tumblr media
Dubai is a city of adventure
Visit the symbols of the city
As we’ve said, there are so many attractions in the city of gold. Here are some of the sights you should definitely see during your first time in Dubai. As you probably know, Dubai is currently the home of the tallest building in the world. The astonishing view from Burj Khalifa is not for the weak-hearted. Then, you should check out Burj Al Arab. This sail-shaped building is essentially the emblem of Dubai. Of course, you also must see the Dubai Mall, or the huge Mall of the Emirates. Visit the Dubai Marina or the Palm Islands to grasp the true height of man-made achievements, made solely by vision and hard work. Another thing you should visit is the Dubai Fountain and Deira Clock tower, which has watched the growth of the city into a metropolis since it was built in 1963.
Visit the historic parts
While you’re in Dubai, don’t miss the chance to visit Bur Dubai, a district rich in history. While there, visit the Dubai Museum, the Al Fahidi Historic District and Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Built to help visitors understand the culture of the UAE, the Centre offers a unique insight into the way of life. You can go on guided tours through the old part of the city and try Bedouin-style meals. To truly get in touch with the history of the city of gold, visit the Dubai Museum. Also go and see the oldest souq (market) in this part of town. Since it is incredibly popular among tourists, it is best to go in the morning.
Tumblr media
Visit one of the city’s markets
Go on an adventure
If you’re keen on going on an adventure during your first time in Dubai, go on a desert tour. You can choose between going by car or even a sand buggy! Visit many of Dubai’s theme parks and have the time of your life. There are also helicopter tours of the city, tours with seaplanes, and even cruise tours. Try deep-sea fishing for a couple of hours or ride a camel.
There are so many tours offered, your job is simply to pick the one that suits you. Time spent in Dubai is time well spent. With so many thrilling activities, you will get an adrenaline rush of a lifetime!
