Why Tutorial 

Following the animation that I have produced so far here is the feedback given by Mark and Richard.

Look at the movement of the primary research I have done and integrate it in my animation

Linger on the sausage longer, make him walk for longer or do a run for a ball

Maybe play with the jazz music, adjust the animation to the music.

I am gonna look on this feedback to adjust the animation. I defiantly agree that it's a bit short and that the sausage dog should last longer and I think the way to do it is by making him walk longer tho I don't have reference for how a sausage dog looks like when it jumps. I also have noticed looking back at the primary research video that the sausage dog only wiggled his butt when excited or sees me. Therefor, making him wiggle his butt while walking won't be accurate. I will look for other things that he can do to make him linger for longer wether it's by extending the walk or make him do a run.

Why Project -  Experimentation 

Here I have experimented with different shapes and ink to try and create sausage dogs. I have decided to add a pop of colour to the animation style and I have used markers for the background and colouring pencils. I think out of the different shaped sausage dogs I will choose the cylindrical shape because it portrays a sausage more and my idea is to get a sausage from a jar and slowly develop into a sausage dog by growing legs and a tail and a head. For this animation and idea I have developed a six frame story board to display my idea.

Why Project- Artist Research

Looking on instagram I have stumbled upon an artist called Robbie Shilstone who is an animator and film maker in Los Angeles.

Robbie's work explores shapes and giving them volume. Making them look three dimensional. I really enjoy how the inked strokes that are drawn over the shapes make the simple forms come to live and visualise the animals or characters being portrayed. I really like this style because its easy to animate due to not having to create too many layers in order to produce the animation. It is also visually appealing and abstract but it still holds its purpose of visually displaying what it's meant to portray.

Why Project - Sausage dog research (Movement and Appearence)

As primary research I have taken my friend's sausage dog for a walk to analyse its body movement and appearance. This has helped me see the way their legs move and the proportions coating its body and also how the body is resembling a sausage because of how narrow it is. I have noticed how a sausage dog wiggles its tail so much while running or walking, its very constant and very fast. They also seem to wiggle their butts when they see someone who they recognise or when they get excited about something. I can incorporate those aspects into my animation to make it more realistic and fun. I have also looked at the dachshund breed on the internet and have noticed how there are also different colours, the most popular being the black with brown dachshund. However, I think for my animation to have a clear presentation of why a dachshund is called a sausage dog will require me to use the fully brown sausage dog because it is more similar to a sausage colour.

Why is a sausage dog called a sausage dog - Research

I looked at the question ‘Why is a sausage dog called a sausage dog?’ and discovered that a sausage dog was originally made for hunting badgers which I didn’t know. I also found out that they are called sausage dogs because of their long and narrow bodies that look mostly like the type of sausages you put in a hot dog. This has helped me understand their anatomy a bit better and where they come from. I think for my further reattach it will be good to take a picture of a real dachshund and maybe a video to see their movement and behaviour which will help my animation.

Why Project - Conclusion

I have concluded that my idea of answering the question Why is a hot dog called a hot dog is too complicated and it seems to be taking a lot longer than expected which is requireing me to go to my back up option which is the question ‘Why is a sausage dog called a sausage dog’. I also think I will change my idea from a comic strip to an animation just because I am more familiar with the ways to produce an animation, plus I have really enjoyed it. This is also because I think I will not be able to produce a finished result within one week which is why I have to be realistic about it and proceed to this plan b.

Looking at the reddit’s stories that I have researched I have chosen my favourite answer directing Celvin, the guy who has asked the question, because I feel like it has a lot of potential and it’s also got a good length to be able to create the comics strips. Here I have started sketching characters and develop a sort of comic though my drawing is not perfect and I feel like I found it difficult drawing different characters the same every scene and keeping it consistent. I also found it difficult looking at the story and selecting what would best visually tell the story but in a clear way to the audience. I have also analysed that this story has a very strong imagery of death at the end which is not suitable to a child therefor I would be required to design it for an older generation start at the age of 18 onwards.

Why? In this project we are required to find our own why question and visually communicate the answer to it through either a series of posters, animation, video, book, comics, etc. Here I have started looking at different questions that I have asked myself and find their answear a through online sources. I have decided that I want to do ‘Why are hotdogs called hotdogs?’. This is because searching your those questions I have came across Reddit and Quora where people have answered those questions but mostly mocking the answer which makes it really funny. Therefore, my idea sparked to do a comics strip based on why the Reddits think a hotdog is called a hotdog. This will allow me to be playful with my work.
