In Gaza, as in Bosnia, a genocide is denied only to be glorified.
Bosnians have experience with genocide. Not just the signs of it coming. Not just the fact of it happening. But also this strange phenomenon we call “Schrödinger’s genocide”: the simultaneous glorification and denial of genocide. There is a cruel dance between the systematic relativisation of the legal qualification of genocide and the continuous pursuit of genocidal politics and its results. Despite the verdicts issued by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), we have not healed. The ethnically cleansed Republika Srpska still stands as the triumph of the Serb genocidal project. Bosnian history has demonstrated the futility of the “never again” mantra and Gaza is now confirming it. The genocide of my people was accompanied by the same rhetoric that Israeli officials now espouse: a genocidal army is the only thing standing between Europe and “Muslim barbarians”, they claim. I have often lamented how the Jews, who struggled for years after World War II to globalise the knowledge about the Holocaust, started facing serious Holocaust denial as the number of living survivors started to dwindle. Swedish survivors Hédi Fried (98) and Emerich Roth (97) died recently – a major loss for the Jewish community and those working to uphold the “never again” vow. By contrast, Bosnians are experiencing genocide denial while most of us, survivors, are still alive. Genocide scholar Gregory Stanton argued there are 10 stages of genocide, the last one being denial, but we are effectively experiencing the 11th phase: glorification and triumphalism. There are people who not only invest resources into historical revisionism of the genocide they committed in the 1990s, but are de facto threatening to repeat it. The Bosnian “final solution” was not properly finalised, they often say. In my home city, Banja Luka, the administrative capital of Republika Srpska, you can buy T-shirts with the faces of war criminals Radovan Karadžić, Ratko Mladić, Biljana Plavšić, and Slobodan Milošević. And Russian President Vladimir Putin, too. In the case of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza, which the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has already characterised as a plausible genocide, we see denial among Israeli politicians and propagandists while it is still going on. There is even more denial in Western countries with histories of horrific genocides, especially Germany. Western governments and media are engaged in a systematic cover-up of Israeli war crimes and bullying of those who try to expose them. Laws are proposed on short notice that aim to criminalise free speech and criticism of Israel. At the same time, the glorification of this genocide is broadcast in real time on social media. Accounts with thousands of followers post footage of Israeli soldiers committing war crimes. People want credit even for discrediting content. The Palestinians have been dehumanised to such an extent that their executioners are deeply convinced that their violent acts are not just morally justified but also noble, and they must take pride in their “good work”. The Serb authorities did much to hide the concentration camps from foreign journalists. They tried to cover up massacres, moving mass graves multiple times. By contrast, the hubris of Israeli soldiers drives them to produce countless images and videos of their work: endearing messages to loved ones from sites of destruction, the mocking of everything Palestinian, proud repetitions of the genocidal discourse.

BELGRADE, Serbia — Tens of thousands gathered in central Belgrade on Saturday in one of the largest protests since the Serbian election two weeks ago, united in their charges of vote fraud and in urging the EU to take serious note of unfolding events in the country.
“I want to invite our friends from Europe to pay more attention to what’s happening here,” Srđan Cvijić, a member of the Belgrade Center for Security Policy who was an election monitor in the December 17 vote, told those gathered around the capital’s Terazije fountain Saturday.
He decried the fact that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who often boasts of his close relationship to EU and Western officials, only promotes European values and “hangs up EU flags” when officials from Brussels and foreign dignitaries pay the country a visit.
Vučić has for years skillfully navigated the tightrope between the West and Russia, often turning to the latter to bolster nationalist support. Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko has publicly backed Vučić’s unverified assertion that external forces are guiding the protests — a narrative often used by Russian President Vladimir Putin when confronted with dissent.
Serbia’s ruling party and pro-government outlets have disparagingly likened the protests to the Maidan uprising in Kyiv, which started in late 2013 and saw pro-democracy and pro-EU supporters engaged in widespread demonstrations and civil unrest. Notably, that movement was exploited by Putin as a pretext for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014.
“Support for the EU might have weakened, but it’s understandable because our friends from Brussels do not criticize the government of Aleksandar Vučić enough,” Cvijić said, holding up a faded European flag from back in the 1990s when he and his family protested against Serbian strongman Slobodan Milošević.
Recent events in the country are reminiscent of protest movements during the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. Much like now, a diverse crowd of all ages but spearheaded by younger generations took to the streets at the time to resist the erosion of freedoms under Milošević’s rule, a period marked by bloody conflicts in neighboring countries.
Saturday’s demonstration was set in the same location most of the protests in the 1990s were held.
Both local and international entities, including the OSCE and European Parliament observers, have condemned election fraud and manipulation in the December 17 vote.
Actress Svetlana Bojković, part of the non-partisan ProGlas or ProVote coalition which encouraged electoral participation, passionately read out from reports pouring in from across the country detailing the tactics employed during the election. The list includes instances of cancer patients awaiting transplants being manipulated to support the ruling party in exchange for advancement on the donor list; senior citizens being enticed with monetary incentives to alter their residency; and deceased citizens resurfacing on voter rolls.
Since the Monday following the election, daily protests have unfolded in front of key institutions including the Belgrade city hall and the central election commission. Saturday’s rally marked the 13th consecutive demonstration, with a notable incident on December 24 when the police responded with considerable force after a small group shattered the front windows of the Belgrade city assembly.
Opposition politician Marinika Tepić, who has been on a hunger strike since the election, had to be hoisted on stage due to her frail condition as Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” was blasted from speakers.
“These elections need to be overturned,” Tepić said, after apologizing for not being able to say more. After her appearance, she was transferred to the hospital due to her worsening health.
Ahead of the protest, student organizations organized a 24-hour blockade of a key intersection in the capital, cutting off access to the foreign affairs and defense ministries.
They camped out overnight in around 20 tents set up for the purpose in freezing temperatures, passing the time by studying, doing crossword puzzles and playing chess. They also organized panel lectures, including one on what to do if they get arrested by the police. Dozens have been detained since the December 24 escalation of the protests.
Emilija Milenković, one of the leading student figures, said that her generation was deeply disappointed by the decay in democratic norms caused by the manipulations in the election.
“That disappointment was transformed into fury. We’re furious that our elections were stolen, that our votes were manipulated, because our will has been tampered with again and again,” she said. “A democratic election process is the absolute minimum,” she concluded.

And we have a winner! One heck of a winner, at that! The first non-English song to win after the language rule was dropped, a powerful and emotional ballad after a long streak of pop, and basically no gimmick (even the costumes are understated).

Zato podržimo novi smjer ruske vanjske politike.' METRO

Exclusive: Kosovo's President Accuses 'Butcher' Putin Of Planning Genocide In Ukraine
Tumblr media
Kosovo’s president has accused Vladimir Putin of trying to commit genocide in Ukraine.
In an exclusive interview with HuffPost UK, Vjosa Osmani said the Russian president’s statements about “de-Nazifying” his neighbour showed an intention “to destroy in whole or in part the people of Ukraine”.
Osmani, a former professor of international law who became president last April, said the conflict had brought back “personal memories” of the Kosovo war in the 1990s, in which more than 13,000 people are thought to have been killed and up to 1.5million Albanian Kosovars displaced at the hands of the nationalist Yugoslav and Serb forces.
“It is absolutely devastating for all the people of Kosovo to see these images which, for us, they bring back quite a lot of personal memories,” she said.
“What we see in Ukraine is very similar — women being raped, civilians being killed, little children as well being killed, people forced to leave their homes — it’s absolutely painful.
“It’s been 20-something years, so for us the memories are very, very fresh.”
The president said she believed Ukraine was now also the victim of a similar “brutal genocidal regime” to the one that targeted Kosovo in the late 1990s and which forced Nato to launch a bombing campaign after diplomatic efforts to restore peace failed.
“As a former professor of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, we know war crimes when we see it,” Osmani said.
“The intention here is clear and the intention is the main elements of genocide.
“I believe that there is already a lot of evidence which international courts would use against Putin and against the Russian government for the crimes they are committing against Ukraine.
“I am confident that these crimes will not go unpunished. Unfortunately, in the case of former Yugoslavia, they have gone unpunished.
“The wounds are still absolutely open.”
Osmani said it was “encouraging to see” the unified response of the West in condemning Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, but said there was “more to be done, both in terms of economic sanctions and especially when it comes to having an open door policy for Ukrainian refugees”.
She said that despite limited capacity, Kosovo had been keeping “our doors and hearts open” for refugees from Ukraine.
“We have been through that, we have been refugees ourselves, and we understand how important it was to save our lives that countries around the world kept their doors open for us.”
‘We went through hell’
Osmani, 39, is a Kosovar Albanian whose family was forced to flee from their homeland during the war in 1999.
The conflict broke out after Serbia launched a brutal crackdown on separatist movements within Kosovo, which was then controlled by Belgrade.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but the latter still does not recognise it as a state, and nor does Moscow, and tensions remain high more than 20 years after the war ended.
In 1999, Slobodan Milošević, the former president of Serbia — then part of Yugoslavia — became the first sitting head of state to be charged with war crimes after a UN tribunal accused him of atrocities in Kosovo.
In an interview with the Times last year, Osmani recalled the moment a Serbian soldier shoved an AK-47 into her mouth before forcing her and her family to abandon their home in northern Kosovo when she was just 16.
!function(n){if(!window.cnx){window.cnx={},window.cnx.cmd=[];var t=n.createElement('iframe');t.display='none',t.onload=function(){var n=t.contentWindow.document,c=n.createElement('script');c.src='//cd.connatix.com/connatix.player.js',c.setAttribute('async','1'),c.setAttribute('type','text/javascript'),n.body.appendChild(c)},n.head.appendChild(t)}}(document); (new Image()).src = 'https://capi.connatix.com/tr/si?token=19654b65-409c-4b38-90db-80cbdea02cf4'; cnx.cmd.push(function () { cnx({ playerId: "19654b65-409c-4b38-90db-80cbdea02cf4", mediaId: "82a918fd-c646-4ee5-a089-9254419da80b" }).render("62273195e4b07e948aea34e7"); });
“We grew up in a country where our right to education was denied, because during the early 1990s, we lived in an apartheid-like regime where all of the basic human rights was denied to Kosovar Albanians,” she told HuffPost UK.
“All other civil and political rights people were indiscriminately arrested, and our parents were political prisoners and we had to go through hell.
“So obviously, that absolutely shapes you to understand the importance of freedom and independence and peace, but also the very heavy price that we had to pay to achieve this.”
Osmani also heaped praise on Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him an “example for everyone around the world”.
“The people of Kosovo took up arms to defend themselves, to defend our freedom and to ultimately achieve the independence and the freedom that we enjoy today,” she said.
“So we very much understand the people of Ukraine and the fact that they would never give up under any circumstances.
“All of our sympathy and support goes out to them.”
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is now in its 13th day, has exacerbated Osmani’s fears of aggressive actions against Kosovo by Serbia, supported by its long-time ally, Russia.
Already there are signs that Russia is working to “destabilise” the Balkans with the help of its “proxy and satellite” Serbia, Osmani said, citing an increase in joint military exercises and a willingness to send Russian weaponry to the border in a recent dispute over car registration plates.
Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has been using recent press conferences to accuse Kosovars of going to fight in the Donbas, which the republic says is not true.

“The only country in Europe where there are pro-Putin protests is Serbia,” Osmani said.
“The only country in our part of the world and Europe, apart from the Lukashenko regime [in Belarus] that has not decided on sanctions against Russia, is Serbia.
“The fact that he [Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić] has disagreed to issue sanctions against Russia shows that he clearly stands with Russia on this one.
“And while in the 1990s Slobodan Milošević really committed crimes to the extent that he was rightly called the butcher of the Balkans, what Putin is right now is the butcher of democracy.”
