Speaking of Palestinians appropriating everyone else’s causes, I remember learning in class that Palestinian resistance movements founded around the ‘60s/‘70s were inspired by Vietnam’s resistance to America. More recently, I’ve been independently learning that Israel and Vietnam have basically been great partners with no hiccups since 1947, when David Ben-Gurion befriended Ho Chi Minh, till today
The single most important quote pertaining to Israel and Vietnam:
"The Palestinians are always coming here and saying to me 'You expelled the French and the Americans. How do we expel the Jews?' I tell them that the French went back to France and the Americans to America. But the Jews have nowhere to go. You will not expel them." --Vo Nguyen Giap, Vietnam's Defense Minister who fought for 40 years to liberate his country from Japan, France, America, and China
The Ben-Gurion / Ho Chi Minh story can lead you to a jawdropping proposition for a novel, too:
In 1946, future Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and North Vietnam's Politburo chairman Ho Chi Minh stayed at the same hotel in Paris, and became very friendly. Ho Chi Minh offered Ben-Gurion a Jewish home-in-exile in Vietnam. Ben-Gurion turned the offer down, telling Ho Chi Minh: "I am certain we shall be able to establish a Jewish Government in Palestine."
I'd read it!

“The American soldiers were brave, but courage is not enough. David did not kill Goliath just because he was brave. He looked up at Goliath and realized that if he fought Goliath’s way with a sword, Goliath would kill him. But if he picked up a rock and put it in his sling, he could hit Goliath in the head and knock Goliath down and kill him. David used his mind when he fought Goliath. So did we Vietnamese when we had to fight the Americans.” ― Vo Nguyen Giap

Relic of General Vo Nguyen Giap's residence and workplace, Dien Bien, Vietnam: Võ Nguyên Giáp was a militarily self-taught general of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), communist revolutionary, and politician. This place preserves many relics of historical value, such as the living quarters and office of General Vo Nguyen Giap, Deputy Chief of General Staff Hoang Van Thai, Head of the Communications Department Hoang Dao Thuy, etc. Over time, the monument retains the wild and heroic aspect of national history.

An interesting illustration of the effects of light levels on leaf color - when I bought this Paphiopedilum ‘Vo Nguyen Giap’ its leaves were lime green, almost yellow. Looking at pictures of it online, it’s typically much darker green. Knowing the nursery I bought it from has really strong lighting, I moved it to a low light spot in my house when I brought it home. It’s been a month and the difference is really noticeable! Gotcha day on the left, one month later on the right.

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu, March 13-May 7, 1954.
The Indochina War has raged since 1946, pitting French colonial forces against the Viet Minh separatists. To counter the latter's advances in northern Vietnam, the French army set up a base in the heart of enemy territory, in Diên Bien Phu. This strategy turned into a trap: the troops of General Vo Nguyen Giap (1911-2013) launched the assault on March 13, 1954 and conquered the camp in three operations, until its fall in May. Two months later, on July 20, the conflict ended with the signing of the Geneva Accords.

ASSEMBLE THE PARTY MEMBERS -- VIETNAMESE LIBERATION IS NOW.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a shot of Le Duan, general secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party, with Ho Chi Minh at a rally in Hanoi, North Vietnam in 1966. 📸: Nihon Denpa.
OVERVIEW: "As any account of combat in the Vietnam War will tell you, America fought an “elusive enemy”: guerrillas who would strike and then disappear; battalion commanders who refused to engage in open battles. But there’s more to the cliché than most people realize. Even by 1967, America’s military, intelligence and civilian leaders had no real idea who was actually calling the shots in Hanoi.
To some extent, this is what the North wanted — the impression that decisions were made collectively, albeit under the gentle guiding hand of President Ho Chi Minh. But the American confusion also, inadvertently, reflected the messy, factionalized reality of North Vietnamese politics, one that historians are only now coming to grasp. Thanks to the slow if capricious process of historical declassification, the publications of renegade memoirs and histories, the dissemination of “open letters” by disgruntled former leaders, and the careful and painstaking research and analysis by Vietnam specialists, we now have a better understanding of who was on top in Hanoi and what battles he waged to get there.
During the war, American intelligence experts cycled through a long list of suspects. At one point or another, intelligence reports and analyses at the time named all 11 members of the top Communist leadership, the Political Bureau or Politburo (Bo Chinh Tri), as the true leader of the Vietnamese Workers’ Party.
The obvious choice, and the one portrayed as the North’s leader in the press, was Ho Chi Minh, a grandfatherly figure whose global travels and illustrious anticolonial career made him a world-renowned figure. Another popular candidate was Vo Nguyen Giap, the general credited with foiling superior French forces in spectacular fashion at Dien Bien Phu. Even Prime Minister Pham Van Dong, who represented the Democratic Republic of Vietnam at the Geneva talks in 1954, was put forward as the real mastermind behind Hanoi’s war.
In fact, it was none of these. The real leader was Le Van Nhuan, who later took the name Le Duan, a nondescript party official from humble origins in central Vietnam."
-- THE NEW YORK TIMES, "Who Called the Shots in Hanoi?," by Lien-Hang Nguyen, published February 14, 2017

i'm sure this has been said thousands of times and far more eloquently and in a more educated way than i can, but seeing all this fallout just makes me think that many people from other countries wouldn't keep interfering and loudly shouting their opinions (especially hate), is one of the major things making things worse.
i know there are people who legitimately seek peace and do work towards it, but that seems like such a tiny minority, drowned out by hateful people gleeful to dehumanize. it feels so disturbing in ways i can't even put into words, how people seem to be treating this like sport teams or something. all when they will never be affected by the human toll of the actions or their rhetoric.
"allies" for EITHER israel or palestine (especially westerners) seem to do them and the cause they claim to support, the most harm.
Wars end when the loser stops fighting.
The Palestinians lost their war a long time ago and nothing this week changes that. If anything, they are farther away from any of their ostensible goals than ever. (They are succeeding in the goals of killing Jews and leftwashing fascism and genocidal antisemitism worldwide).
But millions of people worldwide keep encouraging the Confederate Lost Cause delusion that Palestinians are just about to win! That if they just keep fighting one more day, take one more F-16 hit, nailbomb one more pizzeria, that will reverse the entire 20th century. These "allies" are nothing but useful idiots for death.
Wise Palestinians recognize how opportunistic and false their "supporters" are. Wise outside observers recognize how doomed their mission is. Other Arab leaders recognize it as well - they just can't say it publicly.
As I kept saying for years, all of this could have been solved with a handshake and a signature, and anyone who truly cared about the interests of Palestinians should have been urging them to do exactly that. Get SOMETHING for yourselves. As a Jew, Yasir Arafat's "Plan of Phases" could have worked. Agree to ANYTHING with Israel, sign off on ANY vestige of statehood, say it's enough - get sovereignty in Gaza and some of the West Bank - then wait 10 years and say it's not enough anymore, say you want more adjoining territory, you want what's next door, you want an airport, you want you want you want, and evil Israel is blocking you from it. Israel would have been left pointing at a piece of paper like Ned Stark. There is really no such thing as a "final status agreement," borders are the most social-constructy things in the history of the universe, and every divorce begins with an "I'll love you forever."
But that doesn't involve killing enough Jews right now.
I like to think of myself as a politically astute person. I've successfully anticipated things enough, particularly regarding people who are so transparent in their behavior and desires and skill levels. I can absolutely see Israel coming through this - worse for wear but recognizable, still fulfilling its mission as a Jewish home, now with some more depressing memorials. But I can't make any confident predictions of the future for the Palestinians right now.

Once upon a time, in a mystical land by the sparkling waters of My Khe Beach, there stood a row of magnificent 4-star hotels that catered to the whims and fancies of the most discerning travelers. Among these elegant establishments, the Bluesun Danang Beach Hotel on Vo Nguyen Giap Street shone like a beacon of luxury and comfort. At the helm of this opulent hotel was a mysterious and enigmatic figure known only as the Magician. His real name was a closely guarded secret, whispered only in hushed tones among the staff and guests of the hotel. With his silver hair and piercing blue eyes, the Magician was a formidable presence, commanding respect and admiration from all who crossed his path. The Bluesun Danang Beach Hotel was known far and wide for its impeccable service, exquisite cuisine, and lavish accommodations. From the moment guests stepped foot in the grand foyer, they were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and sophistication. The staff, dressed in impeccably tailored uniforms, moved with grace and efficiency, anticipating the needs of the guests before they even knew they had them. But it was not just the opulent surroundings that drew travelers to the Bluesun Danang Beach Hotel. It was the Magician himself, with his uncanny ability to make the impossible possible. Guests whispered tales of his extraordinary feats – turning lead into gold, conjuring exotic creatures from thin air, and even foretelling the future with alarming accuracy. One day, a young woman named Linh arrived at the hotel, seeking refuge from the troubles that plagued her in the outside world. She had heard stories of the Magician and his incredible powers, and she hoped that he could help her find a way out of her predicament. With a trembling heart, she approached the front desk and asked to speak to the Magician. The staff exchanged nervous glances, unsure of how the Magician would react to this bold visitor. But to their surprise, he welcomed Linh with open arms, his eyes sparkling with mischief and curiosity. He listened intently as she poured out her troubles, her voice trembling with emotion. After a moment of silence, the Magician smiled knowingly and gestured for Linh to follow him. He led her through a maze of corridors and secret passageways, finally arriving at a secluded garden hidden away from prying eyes. There, under the soft glow of lanterns and the gentle rustle of palm trees, the Magician began to weave his magic. With a flick of his wrist and a whispered incantation, the Magician summoned a shimmering portal that shimmered in the moonlight. Linh gasped in astonishment as she saw her troubles unfold before her, each one unraveling like a thread from a tapestry. In that moment, she knew that she was in the presence of a true master of the mystic arts. As Linh stepped through the portal, leaving her troubles behind, she felt a sense of peace and liberation wash over her. She knew that she had found her sanctuary in the Bluesun Danang Beach Hotel, under the watchful gaze of the enigmatic Magician. And so, the legend of the Top 10 4-star hotels on My Khe Beach continued to grow, with the Bluesun Danang Beach Hotel at the forefront of it all. The Magician, with his infinite wisdom and boundless powers, remained a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who crossed his path. And Linh, forever grateful for the magic he had wrought in her life, whispered a silent prayer of thanks as she walked into the sunset, her heart full of wonder and awe.

New additions! And at great prices - 10-15$ each. These will be my first Phragmipedium - wish me luck.
1st is Phrag. ‘Incan Treasure’, a primary hybrid between Phrag. kovachii and Phrag. longifolium. I’m very hopeful for this one, hybrids tend to be more tolerant of varying conditions. Also, the flower is gorgeous - light pink with twisting petals.
2nd is Paph. ‘Vo Nguyen Giap’, a miniature white and pink paph. I like these little tiny guys a lot, let’s not kill this one.
3rd is Phrag. humboldtii. I am not familiar with this one, but I’m intrigued by its long, thin, streamer-like petals so I decided to take a risk.
(Bloom photos are not mine, credit is attached to each one)
