hello, i have made a survey to gauge people's familiarity with the wide world of vocal synth mascot characters. based on this post i made

whether you're a superfan or a casual enjoyer to someone who hasn't thought about vocaloid in years or someone who only knows it through a fanatic mutual (me!!), this one's for you!

this is absolutely not an exhaustive list of every vocal synth character, but the survey is a little lengthy, so make sure you have the time and focus to take it. also, many vocal synth characters included on the survey are ones i consider "basic"/fairly popular but this is obviously based on my own biases and experiences!! everyone's touch in the community is different!!! RAAAHHH

spreading the word through reblogs and other shares would be much appreciated. i don't have a time limit or deadline to collect results but i would like to build up some responses from several POVs in the community!!!!!! thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Out of curiosity: What vocal synth songs changed your life despite the fact no one seems to have heard of them?

pro tip: if you need to explain vocaloid (and im using it as a blanket term to vocal synths in general) to someone thats never heard of it before, introduce it as what it is as a product: digital midi instruments with character designs

avoids a lot of the confusion of people thinking miku is either a real person that can write songs, or a fictional character with a canon life and personality and a voice actress that sits in a booth and records songs written by her company

referring to vocaloids as fictional characters doesnt work because the way people outside of the community see fictional characters is completly different to what vocal synths actually are, fictional characters are parts of larger narratives, they have a life and a personality and goals and such, which is absolutely not the case for vocal synths, which ive noticed has been a major point of confusion to people every time i need to explain what kind of music i like to listen to

we are very used to blurring the line but vocaloid is an entirely different beast to regular fictional characters and needs to be introduced as its own concept entirely, and introducing it as in instrument implies it requires human input, which will also likely avoid the confusion with gen ai voice models

being a vocal synth fan means at one point you will find a song, original or cover, that'll make you feel emotions and blow you away, a song that you would want to loop over and over again. everything's perfect, from the tuning of the singer used and how well they fit the song to the song itself. and then you check the view count and its like 4000.

being part of a relatively niche fandom but not having discord feels like being one of the three people alive that enjoy the media in question. i hate it here.

when did discord become the norm. it's so stressful and there are so many unknown people all at once that already know each other and you're supposed to what? fit in? and god forbid timezones exist, because when 90% of the fandom is from the US and you're from literally anywhere else you're gonna miss out on almost every interesting conversation unless you fuck your sleep schedule up. and trying to find mutuals on tumblr, currently the least bad social media site by a ginormous margin, is like pulling teeth. because why would anyone interact with you when knowing nothing about you.

and this sucks so much! i want to talk about the Dimension 20 seasons I'm obsessed with, i want to talk about Vocaloid songs, I wanna talk about translation, I wanna talk about Ace Attorney, I wanna talk about Miraculous Ladybug without having to preface everything with a disclaimer so people don't get irrationally mad, I wanna talk about fucking STUCKY in 2025 because it rewired my brain TEN YEARS AGO and it feels like Nobody gets it like I do, man i want fandom to get OUT of discord once and for all!!! PLEASE !!!!!! Have the conversations out in the open where I, a discordless person, can actually See them and maybe even Participate in them!!!!

after a lot of engineering i finally found parameters where she's behaving how i want her to.

i am admittedly sad literally five of her vocal modes make her physically ill and none of them give her any vocal strength. but when has miki ever been about vocal strength.
