Adorno is the real Uncle Ted. one of the more prescient thinkers of the last century who gets unfairly maligned sometimes.

anti-civ goo is superior to pro-civ goo

"civilization" is a nebulous term that you can fill with whatever content you want (admittedly, all words are like this, but some have a greater track record historically) which I do think makes it a bit of a non-starter for discussion. a lot of arguments about it are actually arguing about primitivism/industrialization which is both narrow and uninteresting.

for me the term "civilization" within the history of political thought doesn't refer to any single social technology or manifestation of social power but a complex convergence of them, produced in a specific context and turned to specific ends (particularly the maintenance/social reproduction of the society, and the maintenance of it as a class society), and qualitatively mutating from their interactions in the process. Rousseau, in the Second Discourse:

The first man who, having enclosed a piece of ground, bethought himself of saying This is mine, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows, “Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody.” But there is great probability that things had then already come to such a pitch, that they could no longer continue as they were; for the idea of property depends on many prior ideas, which could only be acquired successively, and cannot have been formed all at once in the human mind.

another way I tend to look at it is the reuptake of different manifestations of domination or oppression, as described by Marx in the preface to Capital Vol. I: "We are oppressed not only by new dire circumstances but also by an array of inherited ones that still occur because antiquated, out-of-date modes of production have managed to keep limping along, accompanied by their entourage of anachronistic social and political relations. The living make us suffer, and the dead do, too. The dead grasp the living!"

(I want to revisit how crucial the idea of social death, or a society ruled by death, was to Marx and Engels. That's another topic I guess.)

I think the "crude Marxist" has decided that the category of civilization is purely ideological, that it has no referent beyond an invocation of the supposed superiority of whiteness and coloniality. I don't reject that claim necessarily. But I think it is noteworthy how the idea of civilization is so fundamentally embedded in the political thought of our enemies, common to liberals and fascists (and increasingly many socialists), the task of saving or preserving civilization. And the development, spread, and refinement of these different technologies of power - the state, education, health infrastructure, industrialization, racecraft, reproductive control and familialism, monoculture - often act as foundational elements or "happy coincidences" for a society of domination (e.g. the increased centralization of state power, or legal positivism and the refinement of legal systems to have an internal "logic"), and thus none of them are uncomplicated goods that can be left untouched by a process of revolutionary social transformation.

However, what exactly that will look like - what it might mean to make agriculture, education, cities, and public health no longer subordinate to capital and nation such that they might promote greater freedom and power to act - is a lot more ambiguous and difficult to visualize than a prepper apocalypse scenario. so it's easier to just post the blurry tiger meme

Ancient Arlathan Timeline is weird?

I was reading up on the timeline and I'm already hitting snags because, well they aren't plotholes or continuity breaks or anything, but the timing is not what I expected.

Ancient Arlathan is founded in 1 FA or -7600 Ancient give or take (as said on the wiki & in The World of Thedas, vol 1).

Presumably the First Elves (Elgar'nan seems to have a fair claim to being the first ever Elf, and Mythal seems to be of a similar age) came into existence not long before that - maybe a couple centuries older (so around -7800 Ancient).

Solas could have made his body before or after 1 FA. I presume before as he also seems to be fairly old, as he is part of Ghilan'nain's generation (as said in her reply letter), and likely helped to build Elvhenan.

the part that I'm finding odd is the timing of the Titan War.

The Elves meet the Dwarves around -4600 Ancient or 3000 FA (wiki). That's roughly 3000 years after they've established their empire, but we also know that the Elves would imprison the Dwarves in the Deep Roads at the end of the Titan War (wiki), and that the Veil and the end of the Evanuris occurs at around -3100 Ancient or 4500 FA (wiki).

so... Arlathan is established in 1 FA, is fine for around 3000 years (under unknown rule if any at all), then the Titans and their "soulless" (wiki) workers (like 99% sure the workers are the Dwarves, probably considered "soulless" because of their "Isatunoll" ability to connect to each other like ants) go to war with them over their theft of Lyrium.

Only after this war is won, the Titans are made Tranquil and the Dwarves are imprisoned, do the Evanuris rise up as "gods" (as said in Solas' Regrets). So only after this event can they begin to take slaves and brand them with vallslin, and only after that can Solas stage his rebellion.

which means that the Evanuris ruled for less than 1500 years. and were fighting Solas' rebellion for several of those.

that... doesn't feel like any time at all?

It felt to me that the Ancient Elves were sort of built up as this slow-moving, stagnating civilisation that couldn't move forward because they felt they had thousands of years of life ahead of them.

and instead they were around for maybe 4500 years and about 30% of that time actually had the Evanuris in any sort of power.

like, take Solas:

he spends 3000 years living in Ancient Elvhenan, then joins the war agaisnt the Titans, then spends less than 1500 years living under the Evanuris' rule and then as leader of the Rebellion. then he's in a coma for 4000 years?

He's been asleep for almost as long as he's been alive???? what??

it just feels so incredibly short - esp for an Ancient civ, populated by unaging immortal beings that influenced pretty much everything in Thedas?

Animal Bodies, Colonial Subjects: (Re)Locating Animality in Decolonial Thought

"Similar to the ways in which Indigenous peoples can undergo a violent process through which we rid our colonial mentalities, I argue that animals can be liberated from their colonized subjecthood through an aided 'process of desubjectification'. That is, thinking through animality as an infrastructure of decolonization re-positions animal bodies as agents of anti-colonial resurgence.They can consequently engender 'forms of energy that are capable of engaging the forces that keep [Indigenous people and animals] tied to [a] colonial mentality and reality'. Settler colonialism has therefore required the normalization of speciesism within Indigenous communities to obfuscate the radicality of Indigenous-animal relations. In that sense, recalling the representation of animals in Indigenous cosmologies/oral traditions and unsettling speciesism as a 'colonial mentality' must be prioritized in decolonial thought..."

Black Flag Vol. 3, No. 2

This issue features a lenghty essay titled "Anarchy in the USA: The International Working People's Association (IWPA)". The IWPA is famous for its association with the Haymarket anarchists. Dissent From Within: The Hidden Story of the Anti-Whaling Members of the Makah Tribe

This zine was put together not only to honor the memory of Mahak whale protector Alberta Nora Thomspson, but also to commemorate the story of resistance surrounding the Makah anti-whaling warriors whose very existence has been (intentionally) hidden from the world. Their dissenting voices silenced by the powers of intimidation, patriarchy, and a capitalist pursuit disguised as "traditional hunting". Indigenous writer Linda Hogan and Seattle writer Brenda Peterson journeyed to Neah Bay to interview Makah elders who were breaking the silence about this narrative and speaking out against their tribe’s return to whaling.

Of Diets and Morality: A Vegan Egoist Perspective

The title summarizes this well. It's a vegan egoist text that argues for seeing animals as having inherent value. A quote:

Two Worlds. Two Hearts. (Part III)

Hello my friends! This is the third part of this topic. This time we are gonna talk about 'Funeralia' episode 13x19 written by Steve Yockey.

We had a little of second meaning and laughs in this episode, so I hope you enjoy it.

Cas is a clueless hot angel

The first scene I wanna talk about is Rowena flirting with Castiel because I can. Our sweet witch doesn't lose her opportunity to show she really appreciates Castiel sex apple when she hears him talk at the other side of the line.

Of course, our cute angel reacts all flustered and Dean just looks at him askance like: "why are you blushing?" Which I find very accurate with Jealous!Dean. It's exactly the same reaction he had when Meg was around sending hearts with her eyes to Cas.

Rowena: Ah, the handsome angel is there, isn’t he? Hello tweety pie.

Castiel: Um, hello.

Another funny scene was the classic 'ball handler' .

Let's see how this scene starts...

Castiel and Dean are both trying to think how to track Gabe.

Dean: I didn’t say it was gonna be easy, but uh… All right, come on. Ideas. [closes his eyes and rubs his hands together] Come on. Here we go.

Dean starts by making a gesture with his hands, very cute and dummy, just because Castiel is there watching him. Cas sighs and closes his eyes. In that moment Dean flicks his eyes to him. Yeah, Castiel's handsome. But then Mr. MISCOMMUNICATION strikes again...

Dean: (...) Nah. I need a real drink. I’m gonna get a beer. You wanna beer?

Castiel: No.

Dean: I’ll get a beer.

Okay, this is something very VERY known in the fandom, so, I'm not saying new things but, Yockey wanted to remark here the Destiel classic MISCOMMUNICATION. In which Dean offers beer, Castiel says NO, and he gives him a beer anyways. So, if you pay attention bro the body language, Castiel shifts uncomfortably in his place as if he was mad.

Castiel: Maybe Heaven could help us.

Dean: Ah, not for nothing, but don’t the angels mostly want to kill you?

Dean again sending danger around Castiel. He doesn't want his angel to go through it, or die again. So, angels? Heaven? Is not a good idea.

Castiel: Yes. Yeah. This would be something of a Hail Mary.

Dean: Hmm.

Castiel: It’s a sports term, like slam dunk or, uh... ball handler.

Dean: That’s, uh… Mnh-mnh. No, I don’t think it's a good idea.

Castiel is hilariously using a second meaning term and Dean can't explain it because it would mean explain a sexual meaning to the angel, which, it's a big no. So he just checks him out, because he knows Castiel is not aware of he said. But it's also kind of hot and cute.

This is related to Gabe apparition in this season and all the sexuality and second meanings linked to angels.

When they engage into a discussion about why going with the angels is not a good plan, Sam appears in the middle bringing another problem. Dean solves that one and then, coming from nowhere, he just throws the conclusion to their previous chat with Castiel. This quote is full of Dean's deep fears. And it caught Sammy's attention, giving him an idea of what he had just interrupted.

Dean: You better. Cas, you wanna try this angel thing, then go for it. Just don’t get dead again.

'Just don't get dead again'. It's an inner prayer Dean has everyday, each time he recalls Castiel's dead and his own mourning. And Castiel's sueprised face.

Two Lovers

The dialogue between Jessica, the reaper, and Sam and Dean, telling them she's always watching them, it's a creepy foreshadow of Chuck and his eternal watching over the boys. Not intimacy at all.

But, I named this section 'two lovers' and I'm gonna explain why.

There's a pic inside a book Sam and Dean find to research about the murder of several reapers.

That picture had been analyzed plenty but a lot of meta writers in this fandom.

What I'm gonna add here is...

A lady in red ( Dean) a man in blue (Cas) and Death trying to separate them, unfructuously. Why? Because the man in blue (Castiel) kills Death.

This could be applied to:

Castiel killing Billie and then dying and then coming back from the Empty. It could be seen as triumph in episode 13x05 when the lovers are reunited.

But, but, knowing now the facts, I think it applies mostly to 15x18. Because Cas killing Death again... Being swallowed by the Empty (lovers separation) and then coming back to life in Heaven. And they robbed our Destiel reunion, for sure.

To Conclude, Death was always there separating the lovers...

Another quote I'm gonna bring here is something Bernard said to Dean...

Bernard: She’s powerful, she’s gorgeous, and she’s paying me a small fortune. That woman didn’t have to cast a spell on me.

This, my friends, it's related to the spell those two sisters put on Dean to make him fall in love with one of them. But... Takes those words and put it in Dean's mind. That applies perfectly to Castiel and him. Because CAS DIDN'T NEED TO PUT ANY SPELL ON HIM, BECAUSE CAS IS GORGEOUS AND POWERFUL, AND DEAN IS IN LOVE WITH HIM, FREELY IN LOVE WITH HIS ANGEL.

Another little foreshadows were implied in the conversation between Naomi and Castiel.

First of all, Castiel is able to snap at her what she did to him in season 8, as a growth of character. But, let's point at the little clues...

After talking about the few angels alive, which bring the huge crisis in Heaven, that will be solve by Jack as the new god at the end of the show, we had a foreshadow for 'souls walking the Earth' that will open season 14.

Naomi: Without him, in time we’ll burn out. Heaven will crumble, and all the souls that have been entrusted to our care will fall back to earth. Picture it, Castiel-- billions upon billions of ghosts unleashed upon the world. All that chaos, all that death.

And then, in our noses, Naomi is telling us the show was about to end...

Naomi: Everything ends, Castiel.

Cas: Everything ends.

To Conclude:

This episode had it all, sexual innuendo, fan service and clues to decipher the incoming season and also the end of the show.

For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!

It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.

X-Force Vol 5 #3

Well I found a proper tag for these things.

TL;DR Synopsis: 

X-Force manages to save most of the mutant refugees that rescued last issue from the giant robots, mostly thanks to Tabitha who finally showed up. The mutant civilian and Deathlok make it into the Federal House, however the civ betrays Deathlok and runs through the big spooky portal. Ahab kills Constantin’s mutant son and then it looks like maybe Deathlok LOL.

Things I like About This Issue:

It’s amazing how much Boom-Boom’s presence improves things, bless her. So far she’s easily my favourite in this series, and fan-fucking-tastic compared to the writing for the other characters. I can actually feel her personality. 

Cannonball and Baby Cable’s talk is mostly good; I particularly like the acknowledgement at last that Sam has an infant child that he apparently just up and left for reasons not fully disclosed. Though I guess the only reason was because he’s curious about Baby Cable? Wow, I wonder how that conversation went with Izzy. Still, it’s less depressing than what I was imagining might have happened, given his new depressed-ass Kurt Cobain look. I did find it amusing though how Sam’s just like “we need to talk” and pull’s Baby Cable aside for a private conversation... like three steps away from the rest of them, and as if Jimmy and ‘Star don’t have super hearing adkjfsgd.

I was genuinely surprised by the guy betraying Deathlok. I guess I should call him by name since he appears to be more important than anticipated. Assuming Andrei comes back, that is. I’d be pretty disappointed if he didn’t after what happened, like, who the fuck is this guy, then?

While I’m not overall fond of the art style as I previously said, I will say the way Andrei’s powers look when blasting guys is pretty cool.

To feel antsy over the possibility of Deathlok’s death would require me to give a single shit about him, which I don’t LOL. (But if someone’s gotta die, I’m sure as fuck glad it’s the guy I don’t care about, and not someone I actually do.) Also the fact that he’s on the cover of #7 kinda defeats suspense as well, so...

Things I Dislike About This Issue:

Um. Excuse me. Who are you?

Poor James isn’t the only one of my faves to catch the OOC bug, it seems. This is something I can see Baby Cable saying, maybe. Definitely not Shatterstar. More likely he’d ask if Warpath was okay while jumping to take over fighting whatever took him down, not yell at him to “get off his ass.”

It’s a pet peeve when people forget that Sam and Cable’s relationship was not all sunshine and roses, but instead a very complicated one. Sam gets quite misty eyed calling Cable a father to him, as if most of the time the two were on X-Force together wasn’t spent butting heads. And let us also not forget X-Force vol 2 they did even more than that. I think they have a lot of respect for each other, definitely, but Cable was quite often a real asshole who didn’t know how to talk to kids, so instead he treated them all like soldiers. Sam saying “Cable became the father ah needed...” Sorry, but I would definitely argue this. 

Also regarding Sam: for some reason his eyes closed for most of this issue like he’s Brock from Pokémon. 

This isn’t really a positive or a negative but I’m just gonna put it here: What exactly did that old man think he was gonna do against the giant robots with tentacles for arms? I could understand if he had a mutation that was remotely offensive against, I repeat, giant robots, but tentacles?

Overall I certainly liked this one a lot better than the last, but say it’s about on par with the first. Honestly if it wasn’t for the fact that I am very dedicated to a number of the characters in this series, this is the point where I’d start to debate on dropping it for failing to hold my interest. Fuck, it’s like the struggle with Weapon X all over again...

Hello my dears! I will talk today about a very interesting topic and how Gabriel's character was used as a reminder and also as a realization of angelic sexuality. Not just that, but a constant introspection to sexuality too for Dean.

Gabe as a reflection of Dean

First of all and before jumping to Gabriel sexy bones, let's talk about the way Dean was talking with his husband at the phone as he was scolding his little brother at the same time... I'm talking about episode 13x20, "Unfinished Business"...

[Dean’s on the phone with Cas]

DEAN: Yeah. No, we just got in. Mm-hmm.

DEAN, to SAM: What are you doing? Don't unpack.

SAM: Dude, we could be here for days.

DEAN: No. No. Hey, hell, no.

DEAN [again to Cas over the phone]: Hey -- No, not you. That's… Just call us when you get to Amarillo, all right?

[he disconnects his call]

Why am I pointing at this scene? Because when Dean realizes Castiel thought he was yelling to him, he immediately changed his body language and the tone of his voice became more sweet, almost intimate, as if he was saying: 'No, not you, babe." It looks like that and it sound like that. Just go rewatch that scene and die with me.

The encounter with Gabe

Gabriel will speak and behave as if he were showing future Dean, but also, will bring the sexual references.

Just a little thing over here to connect with my meta of hands and foreshadow, in the middle of the battle between the Nordic gods and the boys we had Sam touching his neck, as a foreshadow of they way he will die in episode 13x21.

DEAN: Whatever. What did they want with you?

GABRIEL: I killed their brother.

This is very meaningful because if we took the demigods as the angels and Gabriel talking about killing their brother, it's what Dean will do when he will kill Lucifer in 13x23.

While Gabriel was telling his story, Dean was the one imagining it. And how his mind went from porn stars to watch a man receiving a relaxing touching from a handsome black haired boy with a red ascot, related to Dean and his own bisexuality.

GABRIEL: Don't let anybody ever tell you you're just a pretty face.

[Dean frowns and shakes his head at that]

This is so cute, because Dean is listening to him as if Gabe was his teacher. He feels identify with Gabe story and words. Gabe is literally, a Destiel Sexologist.

GABRIEL: Oh. That top one? That is for the man with the plan, the architect of my torture, and my own personal public enemy numero uno. Their papa… Loki.

The big similitude between Gabriel's revenge on Loki for being his torture, and Dean's trying to find and kill AUMichael, for being his torture too, in 14x03, is noticeable.

Another important paralell is Gabe taking a new identity to hide, but, adopting Loki's shape by doing it. This is the same with AUMichael, who will take Dean and a woman's shape.

Another foreshadows...

Pay attention to Kevin's last words...

KEVIN: Michael doesn't want to kill you. He wants to break you. He said for me to tell you that, “Even if you win, you still lose.” I'm sorry.

This is what Michael will do with Dean. He will break him while releasing him at first, making him think he won, and then will possese him again in 14x09.

Dean going alone to kill Loki is Jack going alone to kill Michael.

But... Loki vs Gabe (played by the same actor, it means, the same two faces) as a foreshadow for AUCas vs Cas, but mostly, AUMichael vs Dean in Rocky's bar (14x10)

Now, it's time to see Angels can have active sexuality.

Jumping to episode 13x21...

Let's talk about Sammy's dream. And Castiel, the pizza man, giving Dean his pizza. Even when he ate 7 pieces.

7 is the number that will appear too on episode 15x10. And is symbolically talking about TRUTH. So, practically, Dean will have the truth from Castiel in 15x18!

But also the innuendo that comes with it... Because this episode will talk about angelic sexuality.

Grace and virility

A lot of points and scenes with sexual innuendo throughout the episode, because Gabe is here:

Gabe taking off his own grace could be related to masturbation, thanks to Castiel's hands gestures and Dean's reaction.

The little grace Gabe gives them to open the portal was related to Erection. Also Gabe following "the fall" of the rift with his own sword.

His dialogue with Rowena as he read a book with a pipe on it, another sexual reference to erection.

The seduction after that between the red haired witch and the Archangel.

The "make out session or more" between Rowena and Gabe with it's consequences as they were caught: Dean is amazed, Sam is speechless and Castiel is ashamed (because the sacred oath).

The incident after they arrived to the AU, in which Gabe's face is on Castiel's crotch, a very gay scene for Dean's eyes. Which at first was staring at them with curiosity and suddenly in turned out into a gay panic mode.

The triumph over the brother's pathological codependency (at least for now)

When Sam dies there was another scene writers tried to show how the pathologic codependency could be left behind. Castiel stops Dean who was heading to look after Sam. The angel said it was in vein because he was already dead and there was a mission: to find Mary and Jack.

The trust in Castiel won over the codependency between brothers. Even when it was a very controversial way to show it.

To Conclude:

Gabe's character introduction brought the idea of sexualization of grace and angels.

The idea of a sexual active Castiel blocked by the sacred oath and the introspection of Dean's bisexuality.

Chapter 8

PREFACE.

The Catholic Church hath received and declared this Epistle to be part of the Canonical Scriptures of the New Testament, though some doubted of it in the first ages[centuries], especially in the Latin Church, witness St. Jerome on the 8th chap. of Isaias; Luther and most of his followers reject it, but the Calvinists and the Church of England have received it. Others, who received this Epistle in the first ages[centuries], doubted whether it was written by St. Paul, but thought it was written by St. Barnabas, or by St. Clement of Rome, or St. Luke, or at least that St. Paul only furnished the matter and the order of it, and that St. Luke wrote it, and St. Paul afterwards read it and approved it. It was doubted again, whether this Epistle was first written in Hebrew (that is, in Syro-Chaldaic, then spoken by the Jews) or in Greek, as Estius pretends. The ancient writers say it was written in Hebrew, but that it was very soon after translated into Greek either by St. Luke or St. Clement of Rome, pope and martyr. Cornelius a Lapide thinks the Syriac which we have in the Polyglot to have been the original; but this is commonly rejected. See Tillemont on St. Paul, Art. 46, and note 72; P. Alleman on the first to the Hebrews, &c. St. Paul wrote this letter about the year 63[A.D. 63], and either at Rome or in Italy. See Chap. xii. 24. He wrote it to the Christians in Palestine, who had most of them been Jews before. Ver. 1. Capitulum super ea quæ dicuntur, kephalaion epi tois legomenois. Beza and others reprehend here the ancient Latin interpreter. They have as much reason to blame the Greek original. St. Augustine observes that the Latin interpreter was more solicitous to follow exactly the sense than to write proper Latin.

2 A minister of the holies, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord hath pitched, and not man.

Ver. 2. A minister of the holies. Literally, of the holy places, and of the true tabernacle: he adds true, to signify that though he speaks with an allusion to the sanctuary, and the priests of the former law, yet that Christ hath now entered into the true holy of holies; that is, into heaven, of which the Jewish sanctuary was only a type or figure. --- Which the Lord hath pitched, and not man; i.e. all the parts of the Jewish sanctuary was the work of men's hands; but heaven, the habitation prepared for the saints, is the work of God. (Witham) --- The Old Testament was a figure of the New; but the tabernacle of Moses, and the temple of Solomon, were in particular an image and figure of the Christian Church, ver. 5. The Church triumphant in heaven is the true sanctuary; the Church militant on earth is the true tabernacle; and Jesus Christ is the sovereign priest of both the one and the other, and exercises his priesthood both in heaven and upon earth.

3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is necessary that he also should have something to offer:

Ver. 3. For every high priest, &c. That is, as all priests are ordained to offer up to God some gifts and sacrifices; so Christ, a priest for ever, has now in heaven something to offer to his eternal Father; to wit, the infinite merits and satisfactions of his death and passion. This he doth in heaven, and also by the ministry of his priests on earth, who offer the same in his name. (Witham) --- This is the daily sacrifice of Christians, foretold plainly by Malachias, chap. i. 10. 11. This is also clearly mentioned in St. Justin Martyr, Dial. cum Tryphone.; Tertullian, co. M.[contra Marcion?] lib. iii. chap. 21.; St. Irenæus, lib. iv. chap. 32.; St. Cyprian, lib. i. adv. Jud.; Eusebius, lib. i. Dem. Evan.; St. Chrysostom, in Psalm xcv.; St. Augustine, lib. xviii. de civ. Dei. chap. 35, &c. &c. For authorities see annotations on chapter x. of this epistle. The apostate Courayer, who pretending to remain a Catholic, ended by becoming a Socinian or Unitarian, taught that persons were at liberty to deny the real presence, and admit with Catholics a commemorative or representative sacrifice, which applies to us the merits of Christ's death. But this system was condemned by the Gallican church, as contrary to the doctrine of the Council of Trent, which has defined the mass to be not merely a commemorative and representive sacrifice, but a true and real offering of a victim, really present, and actually offered to God by the priest. "By his last sentiments, (published by Dr. Bell) it appears, says the New Gen. Biogr. Dict. edited by Chalmers, an. 1814[A.D. 1814], vol. lxxx. art. Courayer, that although he professed to die a member of the Roman Catholic Church, he could not well be accounted a member of that, or of any other established Church. In rejecting the doctrine of the Trinity, he became nearly, if not quite, a Socinian, or modern Unitarian; he denied also the inspiration of the holy Scriptures, as to matters of fact; and as to baptism, seems to wish to confine it to adults. In 1811 a more full exposure of his sentiments was published by Dr. Bell, in a posthumous work of Courayer, on the Divinity of Jesus Christ, 8vo. a publication we have little hesitation in saying ought never to have appeared. It could not be wanting to illustrate the wavering, unsettled character of the author. The creed of innovators is never fixed; and when once they cast off the authority of the Church, they are carried about, like children, with every wind of doctrine."

4 If then he were on earth, he would not be a priest: seeing there would be others who should offer gifts according to the law,

Ver. 4. If then he were on earth, he would not be a priest. He speaks of a priest according to the custom of the Jews, where none were priests but of the tribe of Levi, and Jesus Christ was of the tribe of Juda: and if the law of Moses was to continue, there would not be wanting priests to offer sacrifices according to their worship, though such priests were only employed about things that were types[2] and shadows of heavenly things in the new law after Christ's coming, and of the sacrifice by which he offered himself on the cross. And this God doubtless revealed to Moses, when he said to him: take heed "thou make all things according to the pattern which was shewn thee on the mount." (Witham) --- Earth, &c. That is, if he were not of a higher condition than the Levitical order of earthly priests, and had not another kind of sacrifice to offer, he should be excluded by them from the priesthood, and its functions, which by the law were appropriated to their tribe. 5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things. As it was answered to Moses, when he was to finish the tabernacle: See (saith he) that thou make all things according to the pattern which was shewn thee on the mount.

Ver. 5. Who serve unto, &c. The priesthood of the law and its functions were a kind of an example, and shadow of what is done by Christ in his Church militant [on earth] and triumphant [in heaven], of which the tabernacle was a pattern. (Challoner)

6 But now he hath obtained a better ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better testament, which is established on better promises.

Ver. 6. But now Christ, the Messias, being come, hath ordained a more excellent ministry and priesthood, being the great Mediator betwixt God and man of a better and more excellent testament, accompanied with greater graces and blessings, and established with better and more ample promises, not of temporal blessings, as the former, but of eternal happiness. 7 For if the former had been faultless, there should not indeed a place have been sought for a second.

Ver. 7. For if that first testament had been faultless: if it had not been imperfect, and all those sacrifices and ceremonies insufficient for the justification, salvation, and redemption of mankind, there would have been no need of a second. (Witham)

8 For finding fault with them, he saith: Behold, the days shall come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new testament with the house of Israel and with the house of Juda,

Ver. 8. For finding fault with them. It is not said here, blaming the law, says St. Chrysostom, which in itself was good, just, and holy, (see Romans vii. 12.) but blaming the breakers and transgressors of it; not but that men were saved in the time of the law, who by God's grace believed in their Redeemer that was to come, and lived well. And the mercies of God were so great, even towards sinners, that he made them a solemn promise, clearly expressed in the prophet Jeremias, (Chap. xxxi. 31. &c.) The days shall come, saith the Lord, and I will make a new covenant,...not according to the covenant (or not such a one) as I made to their fathers, at the time when I took them as it were by the hand to lead them out of....Egypt, &c. with signs and prodigies: I then made choice of them to be my people, but they were always transgressing against this testament, this covenant, which I had made with them: and for their transgressions I neglected them, punished them from time to time, and, what was the greatest punishment of all, permitted such ungrateful and obstinate offenders to run on in their own sinful ways to their own ruin. 9 Not according to the testament which I made with their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: for they continued not in my testament: and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10 For this is the testament which I will make to the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my laws into their mind, and I will write them in their heart: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people:

Ver. 10. For this is the testament which I will make with the house of Israel, and with all nations, as I promised to Abraham, I will give (literally, by giving) my laws into their mind, and I will write this new law, not as the former, in tables of stone, but in their hearts, and to them I will be a merciful God, and they shall be my elect people. (Witham) --- The Jews were like slaves, and God ruled them as a master; Christians are his children, and God rules them as a father: and so great is the efficacy of this divine teacher, that by means of a short and easy catechism, children are now taught to know God more perfectly than the first sages of antiquity by their abstruse and erudite disquisitions. We moreover observe under the new law the grace and spirit of love, engrafted in the hearts of the faithful by the Holy Ghost working in the sacraments and sacrifice of the new law to that effect....This covenant was made at the last supper, and ratified the next day by the death of the Testator on the cross, when he exclaimed, "consummatum est," all is consummated. [John xix. 30.]

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying: Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest of them:

Ver. 11. They shall not teach, &c. So great shall be the light and grace of the new testament, that it shall not be necessary to inculcate to the faithful the belief and knowledge of the true God, for they shall all know him. (Challoner) --- All shall know me, &c. This seems to signify that by the truths which Christ preached, and which the apostles published to all nations, the faithful in the new law should have a greater knowledge of God, of the true manner of worshipping him, and of heavenly things, and also greater and more abundant graces than they had before Christ's coming. They shall also serve God with greater fidelity, by considering his mercy in sending them a Redeemer to free them from the slavery of sin and damnation, of which they stood guilty. (Witham)

13 Now in saying a new, he hath made the former old. And that which decayeth and groweth old, is near its end.

Ver. 13. In calling this testament a new one, he hath made the former old. This is to put the Hebrews in mind that the former law, as to its ceremonies and sacrifices, is now to be laid aside, and the new law or testament to be received and complied with. (Witham) --- Thus the first alliance was to end according to the testimony of Scripture itself, and make place for the second, which is infinitely more perfect.
