Le grandi auto: Maggiolino

L’auto, piccola ma dal design delizioso, simbolo della Volkswagen… Tutta la storia del Maggiolino iniziò nel 1934 quando Adolf Hitler annunciò al Salone di Berlino che l'auto non sarebbe stata più un privilegio esclusivo del ricchi tedeschi e affidò a Ferdinand Porsche il compito di costruire la Volkswagen, con una serie di regole sulle caratteristiche che essa doveva avere. Nel 1936 erano pronti i primi tre prototipi, due berline e un cabriolet, così, poco dopo, Hitler decise di trovare il luogo adatto per edificare la fabbrica del futuro Maggiolino, individuato in una vasta zona della Bassa Sassonia, nei pressi del castello di Wolfsburg del conte Von Schulenberg, che si vide espropriate le sue terre. Fu così che nel 1938 avvenne la cerimonia della posa della prima pietra di quella che sarebbe diventata la più grande fabbrica d'automobili al mondo e il nome scelto per il Maggiolino era KDF Wagen cioè "Auto della forza attraverso la gioia". Nel 1939 la KDF-Wagen debuttò ufficialmente al Salone di Berlino, ed era così rivoluzionaria da far impallidire le concorrenti. Con l’inizio della seconda guerra mondiale la produzione civile del Maggiolino venne convertita in militare e la piccola auto si la cavò in qualunque condizione climatica, dalla torrida Africa alla gelida Russia, e in tutti i tipi di terreno . Nel maggio 1945 la guerra finì e della fabbrica di Wolfsburg, danneggiata dai bombardamenti, era in piedi solo un terzo e si pensò di demolirla, ma, grazie al maggiore Ivan Hirst, gli inglesi cambiarono idea e, qualche anno più tardi, la riconsegnarono ai tedeschi, dando l'incarico di dirigerla a Heinz Nordhoff. Nel frattempo gli operai, con i materiali salvati ai bombardamenti, avevano ricominciato a costruire il Maggiolino, ma la produzione era a livelli bassissimi e fu proprio Nordhoff a compiere il miracolo, così dalle poche centinaia d'auto prodotte nel 1946 si passò a 19.000 nel 1948 e a 46.000 nel 1949. Inoltre furono introdotti miglioramenti tecnici, senza tuttavia mai toccare l'aspetto e l'impostazione originaria del progetto di Porsche, che si trovava prigioniero in Francia, poi nel 1947 fu liberato, ma gli fu consentito di tornare in Germania solo nel 1949. Il 30 gennaio 1951 Ferdinand Porsche morì, senza sapere che successo avrebbe avuto in futuro il suo Maggiolino. In questi anni ci furono le esportazioni negli altri paesi: Olanda, Danimarca, Lussemburgo, Svezia, Belgio, Svizzera e Stati Uniti. Nel 1967 il look del Maggiolino fu notevolmente modificato, i fanali diventano rotondi e verticali, i paraurti squadrati e maggiorati, le luci posteriori ingrandite e l'impianto elettrico potenziato da 6 a 12 Volt. Fu nel 1970 che nacque il Maggiolone e le differenze sostanziali riguardavano l'estetica e la meccanica, ulteriormente modificate nel 1973 con il Maggiolone mod.1303. Quando le vendite iniziarono a calare, nel 1974 a Wolfsburg si decise di trasferire la produzione del Maggiolino ad Emden per far posto alla Golf. Nel 1978 la produzione europea del Maggiolino cessò definitivamente, ma continuò ad essere costruito in Messico, da dove fu importato in Europa e nel 1987, per festeggiare i 50 anni dalla nascita, venne lanciato il Maggiolino del Giubileo, color grigio canna di fucile metallizzato e munito di cristalli atermici azzurrati, cerchioni sportivi in acciaio stampato, volante della Golf Gti ed interni grigi a strisce di varie tonalità. Hyundai Santa Cruz, pick-up ou VUS?

On ne peut pas en douter, dans la cas du Santa Cruz de Hyundai, c’est l’histoire qui se répète. Le Santa Cruz est la nouvelle petite camionnette que le constructeur sud-coréen Hyundai nous propose en 2022. Mais est-ce vraiment un pick-up ou un VUS spécial?

Une chose est certaine, la formule n’est pas nouvelle. Le Santa Cruz a d’abord été dévoilé au public au Salon de l’auto de Detroit en 2015. Il aura fallu toutes ces années à Hyundai avant de se décider de le construire. Historiquement, la configuration existe depuis…au moins la Ford Model T. En effet, il était possible de commander une T avec une petite caisse pour faire des livraisons ou effectuer de petits travaux de ferme. Au travers les années, plusieurs constructeurs ont proposé certaines de leurs autos avec une caisse au lieu d’un coffre incluant des marques comme Hudson et autres. En Australie, dès les années cinquante (et même avant), Ford et GM proposaient des pick-up avec carrosserie d’auto connus sous le nom de «Ute» (utilitaires).

Pour l’Amérique du Nord, c’est en 1957 que Ford a lancé sa Ranchero, une sorte de familiale dont le toit avait été coupé derrière le compartiment du conducteur et passager d’avant pour en faire un pick-up. L’auto a connu un certain succès au point même où Chevrolet s’est sentie obligé d’en produire sa propre version, l’El Camino. Sa première vie a été de courte durée, seulement deux ans alors que Ford redessinait sa Ranchero sur une plateforme de Falcon en 1960 (ce qui a vraiment contribué à son succès). GM reviendra sur ce marché en 1964 avec une El Camino basée sur la Chevelle. Éventuellement, Ford allait abandonner sa Ranchero en 1979 et Chevrolet allait faire de même avec son El Camino en 1987.

Subaru a tenté sa chance avec sa Brat en 1978 puis avec sa Baja à quatre portes en 2003. Déjà Volkswagen avait commercialisé une version pick-up de sa Golf alors que Chrysler avait créé des Dodge Rampage et Plymouth Scamp (à traction) durant les années quatre-vingt. Tous ont été abandonnés.

Pour en revenir au tout nouveau Santa Cruz, on aura compris qu’il s’agit d’une formule semblable. Mais, au lieu de partir avec une berline, Hyundai l’aura conçu à partir d’un VUS ce qui explique sa ressemblance avec le Tucson. Disons que c’est un peu la version coréenne du Honda Ridgeline. Ironiquement, sauf pour les Ranchero et El Camino, aucun des véhicules mentionnés plus haut n’aura connu un grand succès ni une longue carrière. Oui, le Ridgeline est toujours avec nous mais il a dû être modifié et, malgré sa récente allure plus «truck», ce n’est pas un succès délirant!

Donc, le Santa Cruz est actuellement commercialisé mais certains observateurs incluant des gens de Hyundai à qui j’ai parlé sont un peu inquiets de la concurrence que représentera le Ford Maverick à venir. En effet, celui-ci sera bientôt livrable et à un prix nettement plus abordable que celui du Santa Cruz! Mais a-t-on vraiment besoin de ce type de véhicule?

Selon mes observations et discussions avec les gens de Hyundai, tout semble indiquer que le constructeur coréen a plutôt l’intention de faire du Santa Cruz une sorte de VUS plus utilitaire que sportif. Toutefois, on voit bien que le Santa Cruz se présente comme un véhicule plus imposant et plus luxueux que son «rival» à venir, le Maverick qui, lui, s’adresse certainement à une clientèle plus jeune et plus active.

Comme on le voit, le Santa Cruz est «presque» un véritable pick-up avec cabine à quatre portes et une caisse relativement courte (fort possiblement la plus courte du segment) mais en version compacte disponible en diverses finitions. Si l’avant est facilement reconnaissable comme celui d’un Tucson, l’arrière est plutôt original avec une caisse relativement utile incluant une sorte de rideau solide mais repliable qui est verrouillable. La caisse peut alors servir de coffre pour de longs voyages. Sinon, dans son fond, il y a un petit compartiment (aussi verrouillable) pour y cacher des éléments ou des accessoires auxquels on tient.

S’il y a un point où le Santa Cruz pourrait sortir gagnant, c’est bien à l’intérieur. En effet, l’habitacle de cette petite camionnette est invitant même si son design est plutôt simple et modeste. On le voit dans la conception du tableau de bord avec son instrumentation simple mais complète et son écran central pratique. Vous remarquerez que le Santa Cruz utilise un levier de changement de vitesses traditionnel au lieu du système à bouton pressoir du Tucson.

Les sièges et la finition de mon modèle Ultimate d’essai sont d’un dessin toujours aussi simple et modeste mais bien exécuté. S’il y a beaucoup d’espace à l’avant, c’est un peu plus serré à l’arrière surtout si les baquets d’avant sont reculés. Toutefois, les gens de dimensions moyennes s’y sentiront à l’aise. Il y a peu de rangements dans la cabine du Santa Cruz alors que les dossiers des places arrière ne se replient pas. Par contre, on trouve de petits compartiments de rangement sous les coussins. Notons aussi que la lunette arrière peut être équipée d’une petite fenêtre ouvrable.

Si l’on revient à la caisse, celle-ci ne fait que 4 pieds 3 pouces (contre 4 pieds 5 pouces pour le Maverick). Mais elle peut être utilisable pour le transport de petits objets encombrants mais moins pour transporter les traditionnels panneaux de bois de 4 x 8 ! Le panneau arrière s’abat et se relève facilement alors que le rideau ouvrable peut s’arrêter à mi-chemin pour un usage…différent (malheureusement, la poignée verrouillable a fait défaut et après l’avoir ouvert une fois ou deux, elle ne fonctionnait plus…).

Question mécanique, aucune surprise. Vu que le Santa Cruz est issu, si l’on veut, du Tucson, il en partage la plateforme et quelques éléments mécaniques d’importance. Par exemple, si le Santa Cruz de base doit avoir un quatre cylindres transversal de 2,5 litres sous son capot, mon modèle Ultimate d’essai était équipe de la version turbocompressé de ce moteur avec interrefroidisseur de 281 chevaux et 311 li-pi de couple. Et si la boîte de vitesses régulière est une automatique à huit rapports, celle de mon véhicule était une boîte à double embrayage avec autant de rapports. Évidemment, alors que les versions moins équipées sont à traction avant, mon Ultimate avait la traction intégrale plus recherchée par les acheteurs du Québec. Encore une fois, la camionnette qui me fut confiée par Hyundai Canada était équipée de pneus Michelin Primacy 245/50 sur jantes de 20 pouces, rien de moins! Le freinage se faisait via quatre disques. La capacité de remorquage du Santa Cruz est de 3500 livres avec le 2,5 litres atmosphérique mais avec la version turbocompressée, elle est de 5000 livres, ce qui est surprenant pour un véhicule monocoque, sans châssis rigide.

Sur la route

Malgré qu’il fut équipé de la traction intégrale et que ce fut un «pick-up», je n’ai pas conduit le nouveau Santa Cruz en situation hors-route (ce qu’il devrait être capable en autant que le sentier ne soit pas trop exigeant ni accidenté) . Toutefois, je crois que bien chaussé de pneus d’hiver adéquats, il devrait être très efficace dans la neige et sur la glace.

Cependant, je me suis servi du Santa Cruz pour mes déplacements réguliers et quelques excursions sur autoroute. Si, en général, j’ai trouvé que ce VUS/pick-up avait un comportement routier agréable avec un habitacle très silencieux, j’aurais des reproches à adresser aux concepteurs de la boîte à double embrayage qui devenait agaçante avec ses soubresauts et ses recherches de rapport. Autrement, le moteur m’est apparu nettement à la hauteur de la situation avec des accélérations respectables pour un véhicule de près de 4000 livres (de neuf à dix secondes) et des capacités de reprises très rassurantes. La direction m’a semblé suffisamment précise et le freinage assez puissant. J’ai bien apprécié ce système de Hyundai qui permet de voir au tableau de bord qui vient à votre droite ou à votre gauche lorsque vous signalez pour tourner ou pour changer de voie grâce aux petites caméras vidéo captant les images au niveau des rétroviseurs! Quant à la tenue de route, en partie grâce aux pneus Michelin, elle fut assez stable et précise pour ce que l’on pourrait considérer une «camionnette». Pour le conducteur, la visibilité y est très bonne. Toutefois, la consommation est un peu plus notable. Selon mes chiffres à la pompe, ma semaine au volant de ce Hyundai se serait soldée à une moyenne de 11,34 l/100 km. Ironiquement, l’ordinateur de bord indiquait…11,3 l/100 km au tableau de bord !

Si une telle «camionnette» vous intéresse, sachez qu’elle débute à 25 900 $ au Canada. Par contre, si vous poussez un peu plus loin et que vous désirez une version plus luxueuse de la même voiture avec le moteur turbo et la traction intégrale, vous pouvez vous attendre à payer autant que les 44 799 $ que valait mon Ultimate d’essai (plus taxes, bien entendu!).

À savoir si le Santa Cruz connaîtra plus de popularité que les Ridgeline, Baja ou autres autos-camionnettes du passé est difficile à prévoir. Cependant, j’ai bien l’impression qu’il réussira à s’attirer une clientèle plus fidèle à la marque ce que le petit Maverick de Ford devra démontrer. Ce sera intéressant à suivre…
