THANK YOU FOR THIS INCREDIBLE META. OH MY GOODNESS.
CONNECTION AND INSTINCTS: A RED LION META
Red is the most troublesome Lion and has some very ominous foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
I’ve noticed some interesting points concerning the Red Lion that include Alfor, Keith, and Lance (and a bit of Allura). Thanks to this fabulous meta I realized that both Lance and Pidge have yet toĀ ā€œconnectā€ with their Lions fully and do the eye glow thing. Pidge is shown in a shot with GreenĀ similar to both Shiro and Alfor before they did the eye glow thing with their Lions, which gets me thinking that she’s halfway there, but Lance hasn’t had any kind of moment with Blue nor Red. Keith had the eye glow moment with Black, but not Red. So far Alfor is the only one shown to have fully connected with the Red Lion.Ā
Tumblr media
In s7 Lance nearly died because he couldn’t summon his Lion to him while everyone else could. He was the only one who struggled with this. It wasn’t both him and Pidge who struggled, which would have made more sense considering Pidge hasn’t done the eye glow either, although she arguably is more connected to her Lion.Ā
The whole team was shown just moments before being able to fly their Lions through a mental/soul connection (still not sure how that one works) while their bodies were still stuck in the Galra cell. Why then, was Lance unableĀ to summon Red in his time of need when he was shown capable of doing so just moments before?
Because there’s something more going on with Red.
And some of the implications are downright terrifying.
Delve into my madness below the cut.

This message was made by Josh Keaton. Now, I don’t know when or where he made it, but I believe it was made at the end of Voltron, S8; I think he was talking to Voltron Community and fans as a whole, is what I’m guessing/predicting/thinking (lots of slashes there sry lol). He’s saying that you might miss an opportunity to move on and be you, because you keep on thinking about what went wrong. I think it’s obvious that the voice actors and Lauren and Joaquim that people DESPISED S8 and S7. Which is why Josh made this message for us. We can’t just get what we want 24/7 365. It’s okay if some things don’t always work out. Because we live and we move on. I watched Voltron about 16 times now, ever since I was a kid. I didn’t like the last two seasons very much the first time I watched the show, so I went and watched She-Ra, Kipo, and Glitch Techs. Because I knew that moping around and whining about the last two seasons wouldn’t get me anywhere. I would’ve missed other great things that I have till today. So, to those of you who are still upset about the finale of Voltron; Don’t be. You’ll miss other great things in your future. Some things aren’t hits meant to be. But it’s not the end of the world. Who knows, maybe next year, they’ll release another Voltron, one where they learned from their mistakes and make it even better than Legendary Defender. Thank you Lauren and Joaquim, and Studio Mir for helping to make VLD. Thank you to all the voice actors who were on VLD. And thank you to my VLD community, for a wild, wonderful time. And I wish that all Voltron fans will find happiness and peace, whether that be with Voltron or a completely new show. And personal thank you to Josh Keaton, for being the amazing, talented, and inspiring person that he is. If you have made or read this far, (I doubt that most people have :/) all the info in the original post is from The Sin Squad’s Voltron video, called: ā€œHow Voltron Became A Tragedy | Part II: Storyā€. Please go and check that video out, and have a wonderful day, lovelies <3
ā€œHello, it’s Space Dad, Shiro. Josh Keaton. I wanted to say that sometimes things don’t always turn out the way that you want them to. But that’s okay. All you have to do is to remember to always be positive, cause if you’re always thinking about what could go wrong and what did go wrong, and what you think went wrong, you might miss something else that’s great. You might miss a chance to do something that’s great. So go and be great.ā€

The timelines are confusing to me and I may be wrong but as far as I'm concerned Honerva becomes Haggar while she was pregnant (or that's what s5 shows us) so how Lotor knew about Honerva??? They'd prolly change smth on the narrative looking at the nycc poster, the whole happy family is together, unless they're just from an alternate reality. Enlight me Hate, there must be smth i'm missing on??? Did Lotor meet his pre-corrupted mother?
Hello Anon! I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve used your ask as a springboard for a spot of meta.
Haggar, Honerva, etcetera
Honerva was pregnant with Lotor when she and Zarkon died in the rift.
The cinematography in s3e7 ā€˜The Legend Begins’ is very carefully framed so that we never get a look at Honerva’s stomach in the time circa where she falls ill...
But.
There’s several different pieces of evidence in-show to prove that she was pregnant, in addition to the EPs explicetly confirming it in an Afterbuzz interview post Season 5.
The in-show evidence is more in implication. Haggar is not aware of her previous identity as Honerva or her marriage to Zarkon; thus Lotor couldn’t have been conceived after the rift. But Lotor was unambiguously born after the rift as we see both a heavily pregnant Haggar and a baby Lotor in s5e2 ā€˜Blood Duel’. This also goes a long way to prove that Zarkon, on the other hand, was fully aware of Haggar’s previous role in his life; as he was present for Lotor’s birth and knew that the child was his son.
Lotor has never met pre-corruption Honerva personally. We don’t know how exactly he first learned of his mother’s identity, but the options are innumerable. He might have found out about her by coming across her research, Dayak may have told him, or he might even have learned of her from Zarkon himself - just to name a few.The NYCC poster...
Tumblr media
...raises a few interesting questions. Is this just a cute, non-canon visual thrown in to break fans’ hearts? No, I doubt it.I’ve seen a few people speculate that this implies there will be some sort of time travel element to season 8. Now, I harbor a seething hatred of time travel as a narrative device, so I’m choosing to ignore this option.
No, I think this little family is indicative of a return of the Alternate Realities.
We keep saying, that even though it’s the final season, we 'don’t know what Haggar wants’.
But y'know? I think we DO.
Haggar’s motivation? Is her family.
When she didn’t know who she was she was content to serve Zarkon as his witch, because even if she didn’t remember the specifics, she knew he was important to her.She had no outside ambitions beyond acquiring more knowledge, but even those were always in service to Zarkon’s own ambitions.
She never knew Lotor; so she felt no attachment to him.Zarkon dies and Haggar remembers that Lotor is her son at almost exactly the same time. The 'No!’ from her that prompts her to activate spy-cam Shiro, is because she has just learned that the only two family members she has are about to fight each other to the death.
After Zarkon is dead her motivations switch to Lotor. She wants to possess/protect/control him: it’s complicated. Everything she has done since season 6? Is to retrieve Lotor from the rift and/or exact revenge on Voltron for trapping him there; she sends Sendak after the lions because she needs a ship constructed of quintessence infused trans-reality ore to gain access to the rift. Of the two we know to exist, Sincline is already inside it, so that leaves Voltron.
I think the twist with Haggar/Honerva is that she doesn’t have a huge, universe altering motive; but that the destruction she will wreck is all motivated by her rage and grief over her family.
Haggar considers Lotor as belonging to her, through some twisted version of maternal feeling. She would likely have been completely comfortable serving as Lotor’s witch, as she did for Zarkon, if he would have her. But he won’t. He despises her.
And she in turn despises all that she perceives as coming between her and her goal of possessing him.
If she believes Lotor dead then her rage will be even worse.I think Lotor is still in the rift, and I think when he’s eventually removed from it it’s going to look like he’s dead and/or gone. VLD has nothing that would lead us to expect that reversing time is possible, and I strongly doubt it will introduce such now. So when Honerva sees that both Lotor and Zarkon are lost to her, her only recourse will be to tear open another reality and try to find a new version of both of them (hello happy family from the NYCC poster). She’s either going to attempt to usurp her alternate self’s life, or try to kidnap a new son and husband.
I think it’d be a great twist. Here we are expecting her to have been serving a dark god of some sort, trying to end reality as we know it, and I think it’s just going to boil down to Team Voltron fucked with the wrong person. Or, the wrong person’s family.
It’s the most twisted version of the 'devoted wife and mother’, the kind of roles that older female characters are often relegated to - but taken to its darkest extreme. It’s the exact type of trope twisting VLD likes.
I don’t think the paladins take Haggar seriously as a threat. They first met her as a subordinate to Zarkon, and never were actually enlightened as to her actual power in the Empire. After all, she hasn’t ever independently attacked them. For all we know, they may assume that Lotor was behind the Shiro clone situation.
It makes sense. She activated Shiro to extract Lotor just as they were about to deal out whatever punishment they had in store for him, and then the virus almost blew up the castle. If we the viewer hadn’t seen the other side? It looks like it was a backup plan by Lotor to destroy them should the truth ever come out.
From their point of view? it looks like Haggar was working for Lotor.
Aren’t they in for a surprise.

Theory Round-up
Rift creatures are the true main villain and the final thing they’re going to fight.
The sentient ā€˜spirits’ in the lions are actually creatures from the rift as well, they’re just the ā€˜good’ creatures while the other ones are the ā€˜bad’ ones.
The Baku from S2E2 is actually possessed by a rift creature and we’re going to see the mermaid world again.
Honerva has already retrieved Lotor from the rift, or we’re going to see a flashback of her going to the Alteans, saving Lotor, bringing them to Oriande, etc.
Lotor doesn’t have his memories anymore, and Honerva’s using that to her advantage, giving him false memories where they were always a family to ensure his loyalty.
Allura is the one that breaks this illusion.
Alternatively, Lotor actually didn’t truly survive the rift or he’s on the edge, and Honerva wants to use Keith, the only other male half-Galra, to heal him, or even put his consciousness into Keith’s body.
Allura is going to face off in a fight against Honerva, however, she’s going to refuse to kill her.
Allura earns the respect of the Alteans and becomes their chosen leader. We won’t hear ā€˜king, queen, prince, princess, emperor, or empress’ after that.
Allura, alternatively, is going to sacrifice herself, but instead of dying, she ends up ascending and becoming The Lion Goddess that watches over and protects the Alteans and all her friends. (Lotor is there with her too in this scenario).
Honerva is going to mess with time and space, and that’s going to end up releasing the rift creatures. In the end, the only way to get rid of them and fix everything is a huge sacrifice. It’ll end up being Allura, Voltron, or both.
Acxa has been working with Honerva this entire time, but she’s not loyal to her. She’s loyal to Lotor and is doing what she has to do in order to help him.
However, she will end up fighting with Team Voltron in the end.
Ezor died in the explosion in S6.
Alternatively, Ezor didn’t die, but she’s being held captive by Honerva, who is sending Zethrid, her pirates, and some bounty hunters after someone that Zethrid will have to trade for Ezor.
We may learn that Krolia isn’t 100% Galra, explaining the differences in her appearance.
What happened with Lotor and the Alteans was a complete misunderstanding, and the good guys were the one to make a massive mistake there that ended up in the Galra Empire entirely falling into chaos, and Team Voltron losing three years.
Honerva’s stupid cat, Kova, is significant for some reason. This cat is going to drive me nuts.
Kova vs. Kosmo
Lance and Allura are dating at the beginning of the seasons, but they do end up parting ways, and it has nothing to do with death, but rather, a mutual decision.
Keith is going to end up being possessed or controlled in some way, or there’s going to be an attempt to do it.Ā
Lance and Keith are going to end up fighting while Keith’s controlled, however, Lance is actually going to be actively trying to avoid fighting him, only using his sword to block Keith while trying to talk to him, to get through to him. He ends up being successful.
This may or may not happen in the astral plane.
Even if there is no romantic klance, we’re still going to get a hug between the two of them.
While Keith’s incapacitated, Lance ends up piloting Black to save him. It gives him a lot of validation, but he’s happy being the Red Paladin.
Shiro and Lance are going to have some form of discussion to talk that helps Lance sort out his feelings. Likely, this is where Adam will come up again, something along the lines of Shiro not getting a second chance, so in his opinion, Lance should take his since whoever he’s worried about did survive whatever they went through.
Allura’s going to have some kind of revelation that her father wasn’t entirely a person to be idolized, or at the very least, she’ll surpass him and get out of his shadow.
The story began with Lance, and in a sense, it’s likely to end with Lance as well.Ā
Klance.
I may have missed some, or might even think of more as the day goes on. We’ll have to see!

VOLTRON FORESHADOWING META [MONSTERS & MANA AND THE FEUD]
So I made a post exploring things the D&D episode from s6 could have predicted for s7 - now that we know what happens in s7 and I’m looking back at my meta it’s slightly terrifying how many things were alluded (particularly in regards to Shiro).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also examine things from the Feud episode, and how it pertains to s8. I think Lance is going to get a character arc in s8, as well as Pidge. Delve under the cut to see the craziness.
PARALLELS FROM MONSTERS & MANA IN S7:
Meklavar was searching for herĀ ā€œfamily heirloomā€ - Pidge’s family arguably had the most importance in s7 (SAM HOLT IS MY MAN ahem)
Meklavar was turned huge to defeat Dakin the first time - Pidge unlocked Voltron’s green bayardĀ weapon which was a giant canon.
Meklavar nearly died if it weren’t for Valayun’s healing arrow - Pidge almost got tortured.
Block’s village was turned to stone - Hunk’s family was the only one in danger when they arrived on Earth, being held captive as slaves for the Galra.
Tumblr media
Block saved the team from falling into a pit of spikes - Hunk saved the team in the Journey Within (and arguably in A Little Adventure since he was the bait).
Block initiated theĀ ā€œsecretā€ in the game - Hunk fully connected with his Lion and did the eye glow with Yellow.
Pike sets off the trap - Lance was kind of the one at fault for the skunk shrinking the team in A Little Adventure, and nearly made the team lose in the Feud.
Likewise, Pike saidĀ ā€œWhat can I say? I’m good at puzzles and junkā€ - The Feud proved he clearly isn’t.Ā
Tumblr media
Pike had an invisibility cloak - Lance couldn’t connect with his Lion while everyone else could.
Alfor was on the coin Meklavar used to pay for the meal - Alfor was mentioned by Keith (in a harsh way) in The Journey Within.
Tumblr media
Shiro wears armorĀ exactly like Alfor’s - although it could be argued Atlas was formed because of the Castle crystal combined with the crystal in Allura’s crown that now powers Shiro’s arm, I think Shiro may have contributed to building Atlas, which parallelsĀ Alfor, the one who created Voltron.
Shiro wears a crown - Shiro’s arm is now powered by the stone from Allura’s crown.
Shiro’s master and village all died - Adam died. And although we don’t know anything about Shiro’s family, they weren’t shown at all so if he had one they could have died as well.
Tumblr media
Shiro’s master’s dying words wereĀ ā€œdefeating the Leviathan will teach you all there is to knowā€ - At the end of defeating the Sincline-looking machine, it was revealed to be powered by an Altean.Ā
The last one especially made me start thinking about how The Feud episode could foreshadow things to come in season 8.
PICTATION:
In the Pictation round, Keith draws an Arusian, the Blade of Marmora, the Red Lion, and Haggar.
Tumblr media
When the team fails to guess ā€œHaggar,ā€ Bob asksĀ ā€œZarkonā€ if he wants to play or pass. Lotor and Haggar sayĀ something really interesting.
Lotor: Play! I’ve spent centuries perfecting my exquisite, lifelike renderings. Not that you cared. Haggar: I treasure your art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Umm... what???
Reminds me of Haggar’s line in s6:
Honerva: You’ve continued the work I started all that time ago and have indeed seen it to heights I could have only imagined.
The Altean colony will be addressed in s8, and I have a feeling there’s going to be a head-to-head with Lotor and Haggar.Ā
Also interesting that after the hint of the Red Lion in the Pictation game, Zarkon chooses LANCE to play the solo round. That kind of foreshadowing is making my Red Lion meta sound more and more possible. Zarkon also says thatĀ ā€œthe best offense is a good defenseā€ - having theĀ ā€œdumb oneā€ piloting the Lion you’ve tampered with certainly follows that strategy.
FACES FROM THE PAST:
Antok: Bob describes Antok asĀ ā€œKolivan’s right-hand man who fought valiantly for the good of the universe.ā€ Why would he use that DISTINCT wording ofĀ ā€œright-hand manā€ in the same episode that has foreshadowing about the Red Lion and Lance unless it was supposed to mean something??? I don’t know if I’m reading into things too much or if I stumbled upon something here...
Swirn: OK THIS IS PLANCE SHIPPPER GOGGLES TIME but Lance was excited that it was Plaxa at first but then it landed on Swirn - theĀ ā€œseriousā€ one. When Bob tells him her name Lance saysĀ ā€œnever would have come up with that oneā€ and all I’m seeing is Allura and Pidge. Pidge is theĀ ā€œseriousā€ one that Lance would never have guessed he’d end up with.
ANYWAY MOVING ON
Rolo: AlsoĀ ā€œPidge loved that robotā€??? Ok I’m stopping now I’ll contain myself. He remembers that RoloĀ ā€œfaked that distress signalā€ - interesting that we had that this season with the Blades andĀ Macidus, and I’m thinking if something is up with the Red Lion something similar to The Ruins will happen in s8. Lance remembers the distress signal and Bob reminds him that RoloĀ ā€œalso stole the Blue Lionā€ and Lance saysĀ ā€œthat tooā€ dismissively as if that was less important than the distress signal. You’d think Lance would FIRST remember that Rolo stole his precious Blue Lion?? Not that he faked some distress signal?? I seriously forgot about the distress signal, so I think they used this wording/focus for a reason.
This is where things get interesting.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lance is told if he doesn’t get this last face right he’ll be fed to the Snick, which is part of the title of the show.
You know what else is technically in the title of the show Voltron?
The Red Lion.
Tumblr media
And we know it doesn’t go well for Lance as he ends up in the vat of acid. Bob first goes to Allura and she emphasizes that the universe needs Voltron. Voltron wouldn’t happen if the Red Lion was compromised. Similar to when they didn’t have a Black paladin (*cough*parallels*cough*).
Bob then asks who should save Lance, and it’s Pidge.
Tumblr media
Pidge ends up tackling Bob (also fun to note that the light with the alarm right afterward is RED). We find out at the end that Bob is arguably some kind ofĀ ā€œgod.ā€ You know who else is referred to as aĀ ā€œgodā€ in this show?
Tumblr media
Am I suggesting that Pidge might take on Lotor? Yes I am.
It would also be a very interesting parallel if Lance was in danger like the foreshadowing suggests, and she is the one to save him, mirroring Lance’s moment ofĀ ā€œDon’t you touch her!ā€ (*coughs*PLANCE*runs*)
Lance’s progression of referring to himself as the dumb one is also something of notice since it was such a focus this episode:
ā€œWho’s he talking about?ā€ Oblivious.
ā€œWait, I’m the dumb one??ā€ Disappointed realization.
ā€œI’m not too happy being referred to as the dumb one, like, 18 times.ā€ Frustration.
ā€œYou know I’m the dumb one!!ā€ Self-deprecation.
ā€œI’m not that dumb!ā€ Acceptance.
I’m wondering if he’s going to have some kind of realization in s8, and I think it’s going to involve both Red and his Altean broadsword bayard form.
Coran: ā€œ[Bob] judges the worthiness of great warriors.ā€ Lance: ā€œWell I bet he never met anyone worthier than us.ā€ Coran: ā€œThe legends say if you meet Bob and live to tell the tale, you’re destined for great things indeed.ā€
And Allura’s words when Lance got the Altean broadsword?
ā€œYou have greatness within.ā€
And in The Voltron Show what did Coran have the Red Lion say to Lance?
ā€œYou’re great, Loverboy Lance!ā€
It’s interesting to note that in s7 Hunk got his arc and achieved the eye glow with his Lion, and it was addressed that Hunk is considered the coward but it was also resolved when Keith had the heart-to-heart with him and told him how much he admired him for being the most courageous.Ā
Lance was harped time and time again this season as being the dumb one but never got any kind of resolution. Keith did sayĀ ā€œ[Bob] was kind of a jerkā€ but that hardly counts, especially when Keith also picked to have Lance leave because he didn’t want to spend an eternity with him.Ā
I’m thinking that all of this is setting the stage for Lance to complete his arc and be fully acknowledged by the team in s8, by the means of doing something great. And I still think it has something to do with my Red Lion meta but we will have to wait and see.

A theory about Lotor’s real goal and a possible plot for Season 8
Tumblr media
With s8 coming closer, the sneak peek we got at NYCC, and the possibility of witnessing a Lotor comeback, I’m writing this meta to revisit a theory I used to have around s4 and that I feel, after what happened since s6 and what we’ve seen in NYCC (and the poster), could not be as crazy as I initially thought. I discussed it on twitter first and decided to finally write a long version, but you can check that thread for a quick ā€œsummaryā€ of this if you prefer.
In short, my theory is this: What Lotor was trying to accomplish by working so much on the rift and attempting to cross it is not just to harvest quintessence, but to travel between realities and, more importantly, TIME. Why? To reach the past and change the course of history by altering a crucial event of the reality they live in. Which one? Probably, the trans-reality comet landing in Daibazaal. And he is not alone in this: he is being helped by Alteans. Be it willingly or not, it remains a mystery.
What would this mean? No corruption of Daibazaal and Lotor’s parents, no fall of Altea, and therefore… no Voltron either. And also, many other consequences for our current timeline that could play a crucial role in season 8, especially for our paladins.
All highly debatable, but if you are interested, I’ll explain my point under the cut. Buckle up, this one is long!
It always struck me as weird that Lotor, having so much beef with his father, would be more obsessed with the rift than with overthrowing him and after he dies, more interested in Altean science than managing his blooming Empire, which he loves, but also kind of… disregards, in a way.
The motive he claims to have is valid: he declares in season 4 that he’s trying to find a way to collect unlimited quintessence from the rift to stop the Galra from exploiting planets and to finally achieve peace. But given what we see in later seasons, this raises a few questions. First, why enter the rift? There was no need: his mother created pure quintessence from the rift and made it exploitable (if unstable) without ever entering it. From what we can grasp, he managed to stabilize it, why go further? More importantly, why enter it PERSONALLY? And why make the Sincline a faithful copy of Voltron (mecha and all), but with two seats? These questions make me believe he had a more personal goal in mind, and this goal could be crucial for season 8.
Let’s go back a bit to see the full picture. In season 3, Lotor is introduced after Zarkon’s supposed demise. He has a very smart and manipulative way to control his enemies and allies alike. However, since the beginning, he is very focused on Voltron. When the paladins are struggling with their new positions, he challenges them. His generals are ready to capture the Lions at his command, but he stops them. He has other intentions.
Tumblr media
Said opportunity is swiftly explained. In S3E4, the comet is introduced for the first time, and we also get a view of an alternate reality where Alteans have defeated Zarkon. About this, there are already great metas, but for this post in particular, I’m considering 2 things as relevant:
- The episode is telling us that the course of history changes radically with just a few events being different. In this reality, Allura wasn’t put to sleep and instead, fought the Galra Empire, changing everything. Including Shiro’s accent…
- And two, Lotor ALREADY had a theory regarding Voltron and its interaction with this rift and he is just testing it.
He did the false call to lure the team, and his plan worked well. He was set on getting the comet from the beginning, but whether Voltron could do it or not, he had a backup plan. I love my sly son.
Tumblr media
As we know, Voltron brings the comet to stop the Alteans from conquering all realities, but then Lotor steals it from them (hah, losers!). Later, we know what he used it for.
Tumblr media
The mysterious ship has been built by himself and his team. We don’t even know how. Could Galra manipulate the comet’s material? Didn’t the Alteans from the parallel reality say they were the ones who knew how to work it? This would be confirmed in the last episode of this season.
The team follows the comet’s signatures and finds Lotor’s generals in a Galra base where they are trying to steal a teludav.
Tumblr media
So, Lotor has scaultrite thanks to Acxa. Which, as we know, is used for wormhole technology too. Taking Haggar into consideration, the team concludes very logically that Lotor is trying to emulate this technology to conquer other realities like the Alteans intended, and they must stop him. This episode proves 2 facts: a) Lotor really pretends to use wormhole/teludav tech for some reason, and b) that said tech is key to make the comet/ship jump between realities and must be manipulated by an Altean. The team immediately thinks of Haggar.
Well, as we know, Lotor is NOT working with Haggar, so… why would he be so set in stealing a teludav he can’t use, even risking being deemed a traitor by his own people?
Tumblr media
Yep Lance, none of this makes sense… yet. Lotor keeps the ship but loses the teludav. This slip makes him truly mad and perhaps will cost him a lot next season.
Finally, by the end of season 3, we are shown the origin of Voltron, and most importantly, we are introduced to the rift in Daibazaal, created by the comet which later became Voltron itself. There are many bits in this episode that matter a lot, but for length’s sake, the most important are:
- Quintessence is worked by Honerva and becomes an unlimited source of energy. No need to enter the rift.
Tumblr media
- Voltron was created by Alfor and is made of the comet’s material, therefore it’s capable of traveling through the rift safely. Not only that, it can open it and interact with it without suffering harm.
- RIFT CREATURES. Our boy is probably a rift creature baby (we see that much later and that would be a whole new meta, but people has already done some!).
- And, very relevant: the only ones who know how to manipulate the comet’s material are Altean engineers.
And if that’s so, it brings the question… how did Lotor build his ship 10000 years later, after the extinction of the Alteans? How does he intend to use the teludav tech by himself, if he hates Haggar’s guts?
All of that remains a mystery as we enter season 4.
A few months have passed. Lotor is accused by Haggar of hiding. Keith leaves the team and is tracking Lotor with the Blades because they believe the strange influx of quintessence (in abnormal supply lines) can take them to him. He’s using a LOT of it while he works in his secret project. And, btw, it’s this trail of quintessence which takes Krolia and Keith to the colony in season 6. Bear that in mind.
As Haggar slowly recovers her memories, Lotor is dismissed as a ruler by Zarkon (on renewed steroids), but Lotor remains unbothered. He has other ā€œplansā€.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haggar notices something’s up with Lotor. She feels something ā€œancientā€ on him. Isn’t it a curious choice of words?
Well, at this point, Lotor has built 2 ships already and only 40% of the material is left. He’s carrying it in his own ship. However, being spied by Narti (rip), Zarkon discovers his plans and this pushes him to make a desperate decision: before completing his ultimate plan (which is still a mystery), he’ll try to accelerate it and bet everything on it. And we are finally taken to the rift in Daibazaal, his secret project.
Tumblr media
Notice this face? He truly feels for what happened here, I think it was worth showing it. And then this scene happens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So… three important considerations:
- First mention of a ā€œsecret teamā€.Ā
- The construction around the rift is clearly Altean. This here is an excellent theory about it.Ā Also, it looks a lot like a teludav.
- Lotor intends to ā€œpierceā€ the barrier between realities.
This is the key to this theory. If he just wanted to harvest quintessence, he could exploit the rift in the same way his mother did before. But that’s NOT what he wants. He made it so he could cross it.
Then what was he trying to accomplish in this moment, exactly? He just had 2 ships and his father was tailing him to kill him. It’s not like he could form the Sincline mecha with that to confront him and having infinite quintessence doesn’t mean he can manipulate it immediately. Then, why did he bet everything on this strange plan instead of hiding to save his own life?
My theory is that he didn’t intend to come back from the rift. And why wouldn’t he come back? Because he intended to cross this reality, powered by a constant influx of quintessence from the rift itself, and tear the realities tissue to reach a moment/place in the past.
Which moment is debatable, but if I had to make a bet, I’d say that Lotor’s ultimate goal was to stop the corruption of his parents. If he went back and stopped the comet from landing on Daibazaal, or at least the corruption of the planet and the fall of it, he’d alter the entire course of history on this reality. It wouldn’t matter if he dies trying. It wouldn’t matter if he can’t go back after accomplishing his objective, and that’s why he put all his money on it.Ā
I know by this point it sounds like a crazy reach, but it’s in later seasons where the writing bends the rules and allows us to consider it possible. However, here in season 4 his first try failed (because he doesn’t have the teludav technology NOR the ability to use it! He’s just a plain half-galra, half-altean man, not an alchemist, and the project is unfinished), and at such an early stage none of us had a clue on why he’d just throw himself head first into the hole that had ruined his planet and his entire life. Well, most of us didn’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of his generals, the only one who seems aware of his plans is Acxa, his closest ally, and a relationship that is really important, as Astro wrote. Look at her face: she knows they failed. And also, once Lotor escapes, it’s her idea to take them to Haggar, as we’ll see in the next season. Sounds convenient, right? Anyways, Lotor shames his father’s fleet making good use of the resistant properties of his ship and heads to Naxzela, where he surrendersĀ to Team Voltron.
And here’s where it starts getting juicy. But since these seasons are more recent, I’ll just make a quick recap.
In the first ep of s5, Loki Lotor finally gives us a clue about his real intentions. In his words, he wants to find a way to give the Galra Empire a permanent source of quintessence to make them stop ravishing planets.
Tumblr media
Which makes a lot of sense, but it’s probably a lie. Or, at least, just part of the truth.
Tumblr media
I think that, from now on, he is at all moments showing part of the truth. He really wishes to put an end to the war, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t other ideas. He really is trying to enter this zone, but not just for extracting resources. And Lotor always adapts to his circumstances…Though his original plan failed the first time, he didn’t drop it. Instead, using his new position as Emperor and after gaining an unexpected but invaluable ally in Allura, he dedicated himself to discover the secrets of Oriande and strengthen his assets.
It’s worth saying that I’m a firm believer that he truly fell in love with Allura, and that this wasn’t in his plans. However, he let it happen, because it didn’t hinder them at all. His ultimate goal remains the same and being accompanied by Allura would actually grant his success, and I’m pretty sure that, in his head, he judged that it was the best for Allura too. Imagine saving her entire planet and her life. Maybe he could even convince her to join him… which I think he actually intended to do, in season 6. But in a bad moment, so it didn’t work and she uh... didn’t take it well.Ā
There’s so much to be said about the Oriande episode but I bet all has been said before. I’m just gonna rescue two bits:
Tumblr media
First, Acxa again showing her undying loyalty. She’s back to help him a second time with the plan. I’m convinced she’ll play an important role in s8.
Tumblr media
And Lotor telling his awful experience with the colony he once ruled and how it made him start exploring his Altean heritage. We see in the season 8 sneak peek this heartbreaking shot:
Tumblr media
His story is true, and I mention it here because I’m quite convinced that this moment is the trigger of his plan. Zarkon always was shitty, but Lotor was cruelly marked by this horrible day and I’d say he’d do anything to stop things like these from happening. He probably became cold and sly to survive for so long with the only hope of fixing this mess some day.
Anyways, jumping to season 6 and the colony episode, the project is finally done. Lotor and Allura try the ship and get into the rift, though NO ONE UNDERSTANDS EXACTLY WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO DO.
Tumblr media
Lance again, asking THE RIGHT QUESTIONS. After that, what?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please notice the curious composition of the ship. It’s designed to have a copilot, and that copilot was going to be Allura. He included her in his plans this time. The project is done and Lotor is satisfied, ready to change the course of the universe, but they are going to collect samples and probably study the real reach of the rift before even trying to get to the final phase. This time he is not in a hurry, after all. It must work perfectly and, more importantly,Ā he must convince Allura that trying to go back in time is the right thing to do.
But he never gets to do it. When he is denounced by Romelle, he sees himself again in the same position he was in season 4, cornered by his enemies and having to make the bet again. And it could have worked, if not for one missing piece: Allura.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allura doesn’t give him much more room to explain himself. I admit, this was a good moment to explain himself if my theory (reach, call it whatever you like) is right, but I’m pretty sure that he chose to go for the emotional approach instead of the logical one. Resulting in one epic yeet before Kuron rescues him.
After being rejected by Oriande, Lotor doesn’t have the powers to maintain himself stable inside the rift. I guess he would have succeeded if he convinced Allura to join him in this final attempt. But that doesn’t happen and, as we well know, being compared to his father (whom he despises deeply) is the last straw before he loses it and ends up trapped in the space between the same realities that he longed to cross.
And the team discovers that Lotor built his ships to form some kind of bootleg Voltron they have to fight. If he just wanted to collect quintessence, why do this? Alright, the EPs need cool mecha battles, but can’t we give them some meaning? I really believe he intended to copy Voltron’s ability to cross the rift, but failed. More than the ship, what failed was himself: he got corrupted. He had no means to defend himself from the rift’s horrors. Even Allura had trouble with that, after all. And they left him there.Ā
But the explosion from closing the rift after their battle sends the paladins 3 years into the future. They don’t know it yet, but this is confirmed during season 7. Again, the rift, Lotor, quintessence and time mechanics are all together in the picture. I don’t think it’s coincidental.Ā
Ok, but what’s the deal with the time traveling tho?
Season 6 also introduced the Quantum Abyss, a place where time rules are all over the place, which allows us to include time skipping mechanics into our current universe.
Tumblr media
They are telling us that playing with time IS POSSIBLE. And, surprise, surprise… Lotor’s colony happens to be built right in the middle of it. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
And if these mechanics exist, why not take them into consideration when we are talking about crossing realities? The Quantum Abyss on itself is remarkably similar to the rift. In 10k years, Lotor had plenty of time to study it.
To even reach such a place, Lotor must be at least familiarized with the concept of time traveling. And to do so, he probably needs technology. Dare I say, Altean technology. Technology he probably acquired thanks to the Alteans he found. The same who were meant to help him with the teludav he tried to steal, and which he could never have used by himself, not even after we discovered he is half-altean: he needs alchemists for that.
Unless you have Voltron. We saw in S7, in The Journey Within, that the paladins struggled a lot when they were hit by a similar rift (its nature remains unexplained as everything in this series lol). But once Keith and Lance formed the wings, they were able to cross this wormhole and travel in a few minutes a distance that, normally, would have taken them 1.5 years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d say this is EXACTLY the kind of horsepower that Lotor needed with his Sincline, but we don’t know if he had it. And the ship got lost with him on the other side... at least for now.
I’m not gonna get into the authenticity of Romelle’s story. There’re a lot of ways that could play out, but to defend my theory, I’ll say this: the Altean structure around the Rift, the ā€œsecret teamā€ Lotor mentioned, the fact that his first 2 ships were built in record time and in absolute secret, and the fact that Keith and Krolia found his colony just following the trail of quintessence are dead giveaways that he was working alongside Alteans and not just extracting their quintessence. There is a high chance that some Alteans were voluntarily helping him reach his ultimate goal, and they could be the same ones that are going to be introduced in the last season. So, whether we can forgive Lotor or not for his supposed crimes, season 8 will (hopefully!) answer that.
And speaking of season 8! How could all this work in the final season?
With Lotor gone, our new challenger seems to be Queen Honerva herself (yaaaas!).
Tumblr media
After NYCC, I’m convinced that Lotor’s plan will carry on to the last season of Voltron in the hands of Honerva who, unlike him, has the knowledge of Oriande. Her agenda, much like her son’s, has always remained a mystery. However, now that she’s free from Zarkon, now that the Empire is crumbling and her memory is back, perhaps she will finally pursue a personal goal. To be honest, most of this wishful thinking is inspired by the first pic of this post, where the poster showed us happy small Lotor with his parents. What if Honerva decides she will use her amazing powers to get THAT?
Ā But given the sudden attack at the end of season 7 and the cliffhanger with the Altean Eva, I suspect that she may need something else to accomplish whatever she intends to and that something could have to do with team Voltron. Why bother attacking Earth, otherwise?
The sneak peek shows many interesting bits. I highly recommend that you visit this amazingĀ frame by frame analysis and s8 prediction here. But the bits that matter to me are, of course, the flashbacks that are going to explain Lotor’s story, and these:
Tumblr media
A crew of Alteans walking into Oriande. See those mechas? Smells like danger. Also, this seems to explain why Kolivan found the colony empty. Our Alteans have a new home!
Tumblr media
This shot of the paladins traveling through a wormhole, similar to The Journey Within in s7. Sounds familiar?
Tumblr media
That wormhole looks pretty familiar too. As @luminis said on Twitter:
Tumblr media
That was the time when Coran was de-aging. See? They were already teasing us with these time-traveling shenanigans.
Tumblr media
This last bit is the most interesting to me. They are the same Alteans that are behind Honerva in the poster. And the ones around this crystal are five, huh? Maybe Honerva wants Voltron for herself to travel through the rift with these 5 cuties? Who knows. But for the Alteans to be powering the Atlas, it must be for some crazy maneuver they will have to pull after they have shifted sides. Maybe a time jump?
So, after trying to stick to the facts (hey, I tried), this is where I just let myself speculate. My bet is that Honerva rescued her son, who may or not be conscious, and now that she discovered his entire plan, she took control of the colony or the real Alteans working for Lotor, to carry on with it. With her memory restored and her Oriande powers, she will try to finish the job and recover what she destroyed. But she may be missing something that only team Voltron (or Allura specifically) can give her to travel to the past.
So, what would this mean for the plot?
This is the last part where I just go crazy because it could be a juicy twist of events. This could mean:
- A possible redemption for Lotor. It all depends on how is his relationship with the Alteans explained, and the veracity/accuracy of Romelle’s story. Whatever the case, from the teaser we already know that he is a crucial part of s8, so let’s hope that he is more than a mere memory.
- A moral conflict for the Team. If the team is confronted with the choice, what will they pick? No need for Voltron if there’s no war, after all...
Because this sounds like the golden solution, right? No comet means no war, no cruelty and no loss. Allura and Coran would have never lost Altea and Zarkon would have never been corrupted. The paladins would never become paladins and, therefore, wouldn’t be hurt by this decision. They wouldn’t even know. And depending on the timeline intervention, Lotor could or not have been born (if the comet lands but Honerva is not corrupted, he would be born. If not, he wouldn’t, and I’m sure Lotor was willing to pay this price. Honerva tho, I’m not sure).
So, our paladins would probably live normal lives, with two notorious exceptions.
a) Shiro would eventually die of his illness. I swear I don’t enjoy writing this, Shiro has had enough, but remember this is just hypothetical and I’m as salty as you about his mistreatment.
b) Keith would never be born. No war means no Blade of Marmora. No Blades mean our boy is never born because Krolia never gets to Earth.
As a demon klancer (sorry, don’t leave!), point b is making my senses tingle, because I’m pretty sure that in a moment of confrontation, Keith would consider it a fair price to pay and I like to think that the team, especially Lance, would be dead set against it. If the gang had to take sides, my bet is this: Allura and Coran would be tempted, and Keith would agree. Pidge and Shiro could be in a grey zone but I’m pretty sure that Hunk and Lance would be totally opposed to this.
And I know what you’re thinking: what a tired trope is this ā€œ magical time travel, the plot never happenedā€ crap. TO BE CLEAR: I’M SURE THEY WON’T ACCEPT IT AND THEY WILL FIGHT HONERVA ANYWAY. I’m just exposing a possible moral dilemma that could divide the team as a plotline, but I think there will be some kind of scientific inconvenience to this, that will make it too dangerous or downright impossible to achieve. And you know who I think will have to explain that to them?
Tumblr media
This fella. He is back for a reason! (he’s also in a screenshot from the sneak peek).Ā And he is the only one who understands the complexity of the trans-reality comet, the coexistence of many realities and the percentage of success of every action in the chain. And once the team settles their argument, maybe after some confrontation, they will have to stop Honerva from wrecking their reality, maybe giving us one last epic mecha fight and one last, heartbreaking team bonding moment too. After all, this cartoon is called VOLTRON for a reason, right? And it’s… ending. Finally.
Inch resting at least, don’t you think?
Many thanks to @leakinghate for letting me borrow the NYCC screenshots and also for writing an amazing post, and to @astrolatte for being on board with this and making a great thread on twitter. Let me know what you think! And sorry if you’re on pc, it looks kinda ugly lol
Edit: In case you are interested on a take about the endgames, I answered that here.

Some thoughts ab Klance after S8
this is sorta longs so hear me out
I have this theory/headcanon that after s8 of Voltron, lance and Keith just slowly realized they were in love.
They're both comfortable with each other, and they're there when the other is struggling. They both know that their relationship is more than just friendship. And They both know that what they feel isn't simply brotherly love. No Keith knows that his feelings for Shiro are different from his feelings for lance. And Lance knows that his feeling towards his sisters and their children aren't even close to what he feels towards Keith. Then how come every time, he always ends up sitting next to Keith? How come every time they have one of their bonding moments his heart flutters and he feels this weird feeling in his chest?
He still loves allura. He always had. She's smart and funny. But Keith? He loves his competitive and ambitious spirit. He loves the face Keith makes whenever he says he doesn't remember their bonding moments. He simply loves.... Keith.
They never realized. Well, Keith realized it before but simply shut down his feeling because lance seemed happy with Allura. And lance simply thought that these feelings couldn't be real. He couldn't fall for a mullet head.
But that's the thing, isn't it. They've always been interested in each other. They've slowly started to get to know each other. Sometimes Keith still visits lance in the farm. It's a quiet afternoon away from his galra duties.
Lance is always happy to have his old leader around.
One day, they sit down together, in front of allura's statue, and watch the sunset and the sky slowly turn dark.
Lance looks up and smiles. Soft sad smile. Again, as I said, lance truly loved allura. He was a loyal one, if he truly loved someone he'll always will.
Keith, of course, is there for him and says, "you miss her, don't you? We all do"
Lance nods and turns his head towards Keith. He's older. Hotter. And definitely more mature looking. Again, his heart skips a beat. Has he always felt this way?
Yes, probably. He won't admit it tho. Ā No, he assumed he was feeling nostalgic, that's all
Keith noticed something was wrong with lance. He knew lance for years now, he can tell when something is bugging him.
"Is something wrong?" He asked
Lance looked at him surprised. "Will you always be here for me?" He asked back
Keith's heart was beating faster than normal. Way faster. But he couldn't tell him. Not when Lance was still obviously in love with allura.
"Of course. We make a good team remember?"
Lance let out a chuckle. "No I don't," he said, to which Keith responded to by grumbling.
He can't help it anymore. He needs to get this out of his chest before he explodes.
"Lance, I have something I need to tell you."
"Yeah?"
"I like you"
Lance didn't say anything. for a full long minute, he stared at Keith not believing what he just heard.
" it's fine now, I mean I used to like you before-" Keith immediately said panicking
He stopped mid-sentence seeing as there was now a soft blue light.
That was all that he needed. That sentence. To make lance admit what he had hidden deep in his heart for a long time now.
" all this time. I always can to you for advice about her, and all this time..." He slowly started realizing
"Wait lance that's not-"
"Have I been hurting you? I should've known" Muttered lance
Seeing as lance was deep in thought Keith grabbed his face and pulled him really close -too close-
"Stop over thinking it!" He yelled at him, "you were happy and that's all that mattered"
Lance smiled.
"Your Altean marks...? They're glowing..." added Keith
"I know. I feel her. Right next to me. She told me she's happy someone cares about me the way I cared about her," admitted lance, as one single tear fell from his right eye, "I deserve happiness.
She's letting go of me. And I'm letting go of her.
I like you too mullet head. I always have."
Keith smiled softly as lance's mark slowly faded.
Allura made sure not to leave lance until he found his true happiness.
They both got up and started to head for the house. They were both holding hands.
I'm sorry for my shitty writing I just had this idea in my head and I noticed that no one said anything positive about how Voltron ended. I think Voltron didn't show us a lot, but they showed us enough for us to understand.
people can get confused about their feelings. Lance liked allura from the beginning, but he also felt a special attraction towards Keith Ā (I mean he spotted him from miles away, and he knew his name even tho he's "bad with names") he was obviously fond of both of them, yet he took the easy route and chose allura. Why? Cz he knows she's kind enough to accept him even if she didn't truly love him the way he does.
Don't forget that from lance's point of view, he and Keith used to hate each other, then they were stuck together many times and then he became his leader. To him, Keith was no one but someone much more talented than him. (I mean Keith is the best pilot and then he's the black paladin)
To him, Keith couldn't return his feelings
Oh, how wrong.
Keith, from day one, always appreciated lance. He always wanted lance to notice him. (To him lance is this outgoing, confident social dork) But also to him, lance was a lady's man. All he could do was support him from behind.
Since that day where lance was worried he won't be a paladin, Keith suddenly started going on missions. Has no one noticed? Keith stepped down from the team on purpose to let lance stay on the team. Ā  He also showed his interest in lance in how he was so hung up on their bonding moment. After all, that was the one moment that has him hope that he might have a chance with lance.
After that. During the time lance chose he wanted to date allura. Keith never smiled to lance the way he used to. Before it was an ambitious, competitive smile. Now it's soft, "look at my dork", sad smile. Its because he lost him. Lance chose allura. But at the same time, he wanted lance to Be happy so he didn't do anything. He just let things go. He was there when lance needed him and he'll always be.
And the way lance blushed at Keith (sunset scene). Or how lance and Keith wanted keith/Lance Ā to survive. And lance said Keith is the future. Ā (It's a lie actually. Allura brought the team together. She's the princess. If he truly wanted the best for the world he would have picked her, but at the moment where he had to pick who should survive ofc he picked his true love)
same with keith, if he stayed he was going to stay with the rest of the team. The smart choice would have been to chose himself. But no he wanted lance to survive.
Anyways, idk if I'm reading too much into this, but I think this is what's truly behind Voltron.
Lance cared for allura. But he also had feelings for Keith. Ā Keith without a doubt was head over heels for lance. And allura? She cared for lance. She wanted to be happy just as much she wanted him to be happy so she decided to stay with him. They could have ended up together if she survived but unfortunately, she didn't. So this leaves us with Keith and lance. They're both hot-headed and stubborn but also very fragile and caring and I think that their relationship will only slowly develop after a few years from voltron's ending. That's why it wasn't included. They wanted us to understand that things don't always go the way we want them to. They wanted us to also understand the true relationship between klance.
Again, this is all like 2 am talk and I can't sleep I'm just thinking about this. Idk if I'm over thinking it but this is my own cannon and I don't care DreamWorks.
I, to be honest, had this thought for a while and this is why I'm actually in love with how Voltron ended. In a way I liked how our soft boy got to be happy with allura before she sacrificed herself. And if it took lance that much to admit he loved allura then it'll take as much time for him and Keith. I liked the idea of him slowly healing from losing her. I liked his marks bc in a way that's her way of always being there with him to make sure he's getting the ending he deserves.
This is all full of headcanons filled into one giant ball of cringe but I had to say it
