Long text ahead!

So here I am, driving two hours to pay a student loan and what did I decide I wanted to do? Write a post about my favorite band ever for everyone who isn’t Mario (Because he hates me or some shit)(Not really he just really doesn’t like Coheed but to each their own) So lemme Tell Y’all about Coheed and Cambria! 

So Coheed is just one of those bands that I’ve loved since I was a wee little nugget and has never faded from my heart. In fact, my first tattoo is a symbol from them (The keywork, which I will get into in a bit) on my ribcage, one of the most sensitive fucking places to get tatted lemme tell you (and it ain’t small) They are the kind of band that I still get chills listening to from time to time and I hope that never stops as dumb as it sounds Coheed and Cambria is a Prog-Rock band based from my home state of New York, whispers have been passed that they began as a Rush cover band but really I can’t find any proof to it so there’s that myth. One of the most recognizable songs by these guys has to be a little ditty called Welcome Home, which was used in advertisements for the movie ‘9′ https://youtu.be/n0H3RlaQVrM Or A favor House Atlantic (which is old whiney snakebites claudio)

The band includes 

Frontman and Guitarist Claudio Sanchez  Guitarist Travis Stever Drummer Josh Eppard and Bassist Zach Cooper What’s really cool about Coheed is that they are a concept band, which is one of my things that I love. All of their albums (Sans Color Before The Sun) are concept albums following the storyline of frontman (And perfect human) Claudio Sanchez and to a degree his wife Chondra’s comic book The Amory Wars (Illustrated by artist Rags Morales) Here’s the brief summary from wiki on what that’s about:

“ The Amory Wars is set in Heaven's Fence, a collection of 78 planets held in place by interconnecting beams of energy, known as the Keywork. The first half of the story narrates Coheed Kilgannon and Cambria Kilgannon's struggle against Wilhelm Ryan, the Supreme Tri-Mage (later referred to as the Archmage). The second half of the story focuses on the heroic journey of their son, messianic Claudio Kilgannon. Over the course of the story, Claudio assumes the mantle of The Crowing, foretold savior of Heaven's Fence. In the end, he will face the Archmage, absolute ruler of Heaven's Fence and the one ultimately responsible for the death of Claudio's family. “ (Wiki)

Some of their songs within the first few comics are from their older band Shabutie and were adjusted to fit their comic as it goes Just as a content warning if you do decide to read amory wars, Within the second and third comic there is rape, I’m not going to lie to you. I will never listen to Devil in Jersey City the same again. Additionally there is filicide within the comic Continuing onwards the list of albums in conjunction with the comic books are as follows: The Second Stage Turbine Blade (I have a signed copy of this comic from the whole band and it’s p cool)  In Keeping Secrets of Silent earth 3 Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow >>In here theres an album by Claudio’s side band The Prize Fighter Inferno that also has story relevence, the Album is called My Brother’s Blood Machine Year of the Black Rainbow (tbh their worst album imo) Afterman: Ascension Afterman: Descension There’s another album released in in 2015 called The Color Before the Sun which is 100% unaffiliated with the comic book, it’s mostly about Claudio’s life on the road as well as the birth of his son Atlas and sort of a rekindling of he and his wife Chondra which i believe was in response to earlier songs made in reference to her based on life events.  Long story short they have a lot of music and even if you don’t read the comic book it’s still wonderful. I’m gonna toss a few of my favorites in the bottom here to give a quick listen. They’ve teased potentially releasing a new album in 2018, but who knows.

hey kids! ever want to send me a song? well here’s my 16 criteria for songs.

(in advance i must warn you i’m listening to 2000s smash hits as i write this so i’ll be using them as examples)

1) the most important factor in whether i like a song or not is the percussion that makes up the beat. no percussion? ok! i don’t like it. opps. anyway that’s why 99% of acoustic songs are Bad

2) it doesn’t just require a beat, it has to be a heavy beat. like a bangin ass beat. just bass pumping isn’t a heavy beat bc it’s too subtle. the beat should be a central part of the song and i should really hear it. i don’t like when it’s the same volume as the rest of the instrumentals and vocals. it should be a little louder. anything from dubstep beats to shuffly sounding 90s beats (think Loser) are acceptable as long as they go hard as fuck

3) it should have a strong undercurrent that is catchy (think Love Song.) the background of a song is not just there to make the vocals sound less empty. if i could listen to a song without vocals and think it’s decent (doesn’t have to be perfect) then it’s a good song. 

4) no basic shit i don’t want a song that sounds like every other song ever

5) no unnecessary vocals. no songs that focus too much on the vocals. your excessive vibratto vocalization is boring and it does not impress me. and unfortunately i am not a person who can just listen to someone sing and find it super impressive or super entertaining unless they’re like, my friend or it’s maybe a musical?? maybe? idk. it’s all about instrumentals for me. unless you have  interesting vocals that perfectly complement the backing of the song (think Pumped Up Kicks) don’t be singing the same stuff over and over or doing annoying vocalizations or making songs that are only about your boring vocals

6) on that note, harmonies are crucial. a good harmony is like a sensory N U T to me. harmonies between instruments, people, instruments and people, etc, especially combined or on the offbeat with jammin percussion? that’s what makes a GREAT song. 

7) never underestimate the value of REALLY good piano or REALLY good guitar. (think, respectively, Drops Of Jupiter and Take Me Out. i really fucking am listening to those 2000s smash hits) it can be both a good backing and a centerpiece to a song, especially when combined or on the offbeat with jammin percussion. you can also use piano and guitar to create or enhance a beat and take a song up to banger level!

8) no folk (unless it’s beck-style weird anti-folk stuff) and no country, period, tbh

9) unless a song has such a killer message that it makes the whole song a little better, i don’t really care what the lyrics are. it don’t matter pal. it’s about the mood. if the lyrics happen to be good, as they often are in a super good song, then it’s not really a factor my dude

10) little things can make a song way better. it’s so good when a song gets all muffled and then slowly returns to clarity. those little perfect harmonies in the chorus that make you listen to a mediocre song just to hear those harmonies (think Walls by beck noah fence bek david campbell but walls isnt great except for that one part in the chorus)

11) sometimes ppl don’t listen past the first part of a song and i know i sure don’t so if it’s good it’ll catch my attention (unless you specifically tell me to keep listening and it’ll go really hard, and then that’s good bc the first part makes me excited for the part that goes hard)

12) buildup is crucial unless the whole point of yr song is to be kind of a droning dirge like Loser. building up to the chorus is crucial.

13) which leads me to: the chorus can’t be some shit! that the most important part! but also, the refrains should be decent, bc otherwise, i’ll just ignore them for the much better chorus ;)

14) except for #8, genre does not really matter. a song can go hard and be indie or pop or classic rock or punk or dubstep or electro or whatever. 

15) one really good element of a song can make up for other iffy elements. if it’s really, really catchy, the beat is less important. if the beat’s really really good, the catchiness is less important. the best part of a song is layers. when they overlap, when they duck in and out, when they go against each other and then sync up, that’s when the song is really good. it’s also acceptable if one layer is really good and one layer is just okay. 

16) finally. can you visualize me in any of the following scenarios when i listen to this song you are sending me? A) sitting on the hood of a trashy car grinning, manspreading, and stomping my foot B) revving up a chainsaw and running across a field, slashing nazis to shreds C) jumping off a cliff with a background of blue sky and flying off with arms spread in joy, accompanied by birds D) at a party in 1926 wearing something scandalous and jamming out with my wealthy lovers E) laughing and crying in drugged-out euphoria as i lie on the ocean city boardwalk after having overdosed F) having a magical girl transformation sequence with modern dance moves G) making out on the beach in my boyfriend’s camaro in 1987 H) jumping up and down in full decora while flashing peace signs and dancing around, idol style

ok take this with a grain of salt because i haven’t watched all of naruto shippuden so i’m missing out on literally all the best fights... but gaara vs. rock lee always remains iconic and jaw-dropping. naruto and sasuke’s first battle at the valley has some sick moments too, and i really enjoyed sakura (+chiyo) vs. sasori

8) favorite female ninja’s outfit

temari’s 2nd part 1 oufit, tenten’s part 2 outfit, and sakura and hinata’s ‘the last’ outfits (which i have not seen and honestly... i’m good. i’m good). oh, i also really like yugito’s outfit and kurotsuchi’s outfit from b*ruto (which i have also never watched because i’m good. i’m good...) kushina’s genin outfit was also v cute, and so was sakura’s summer uniform from the 3rd naruto movie!

9) favorite male ninja’s outfit

i also like gaara’s 2nd part 1 outfit (a major improvement on his first tbh) and i HAVE to mention sasuke’s Iconique™ Hunting For Itachi fit because that black low cut sleeveless vest over the bandages??? a+ i also know people are gonna hate me for this but naruto’s ‘the last’ look... really not so bad... you know. i’m kinda feelin it... sorta. also neji’s & shino’s part 2 looks... good. good.

naruto just has... so many fucking characters... too many to think about.
