every time tsukishima scolds koito

koito is tsukishima's superior officer, but sometimes tsukishima can't resist telling him what to do or yelling at him, and i like that.

volume 11, chapter 105 - 気をつけろ散弾銃を持ってる // 鯉登少尉先走るなッ "Watch out, he has a shotgun! // Don't rush in, Second Lieutenant Koito!" (when koito is about to go up the stairs in pursuit of the lightning bandit. koito ignores him and slides down the oily stairs backwards on the next page. you can't see tsukishima saying these lines, but noda-sensei confirmed in an interview that it was him.) volume 11, chapter 106 - 待て鯉登少尉一人で行くなッ "Wait, Second Lieutenant Koito! Don't go alone!" (when koito jumps up in pursuit of the lightning bandit. koito ignores him and runs across a ceiling beam and out the window.) (not polite speech)

volume 26, chapter 251 - 鯉登少尉避けろ "Second Lieutenant Koito! Dodge!" (when ushiyama is about to throw an entire usami at koito and nikaidou. koito dodges usami well, and tsukishima and kikuta jump over usami, and then usami crashes into nikaidou.) (not polite speech)

volume 26, chapter 259 - 離れてくださいッ "Please get away from him!" (when koito is fighting boutarou, tsukishima shoots boutarou's hand and yells this. if it wasn't directed at koito, he wouldn't have said it politely. then boutarou runs away.) (polite speech)

conclusion

when tsukishima scolds him, koito often ignores it unless it was something he was already going to do. tsukishima almost always addresses koito with polite speech, but when scolding him, he forgoes polite speech about half the time. if koito wasn't so very prone to rushing in, he wouldn't have to get scolded all the time. isn't it obvious that tsukishima only wants what's best for him? usually?

bonus: the one time koito really scolds tsukishima, yelling at him for letting asirpa escape in order to save him (chapter 260), tsukishima makes this face and apologizes:

he can dish it out, but he can't take it...

Life of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) - Part 21

Patience in the Face of Evil -

The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, would take every opportunity to call people towards Islam. But those who opposed him such as his uncle Abu Lahab strived hard against him in order to prevent the message of Islam from spreading. For example, during the fair of Dhu Al Majaz, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, called people towards Islam. His uncle, Abu Lahab, would follow him everywhere he went and would hurl lies and abuses at him. This incident has been recorded in Imam Ibn Kathir’s, the Life of the Prophet, Volume 1, Page 335.

This incident shows the importance of remaining patient whenever one strives in doing things which are good. Whenever one invites others towards Islam, commands good and forbids evil they will be challenging the heedless lifestyle of many others which will inspire them to resist the truth anyway they can. The major reason all the past nations rejected their Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, was due to this very reason. They could not abandon their lifestyles and characteristics and in defense of them were prepared to wage war against Allah, the Exalted, and their Holy Prophet, peace be upon him. When one takes up this important duty they must be prepared to face many hardships caused by others including their own relatives. The Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, are the most beloved to Allah, the Exalted, yet they encountered countless difficulties from their nations. One only needs to study the Holy Quran and the Hadiths of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, to observe this fact. For example, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, once declared in a Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 2472, that no one in creation had been persecuted in the path of Allah, the Exalted, more than him.

In cases like this one’s response to the bad attitude of others should be educated, respectful and gentle. An example of this is found in chapter 19 Maryam, verses 46-47:

“[His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time." [Abraham] said, "Peace [i.e., safety] will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.”

Here the kind and respectful response of the Holy Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, to the harsh attitude of his elder is discussed.

In most cases, a person must possess a character flaw if they claim to get along with everyone. Due to the differences within the members of society a person will never get along with everyone. They will always be one or more that disagree with their mentality, life style and advice. This diversity will lead to tension and occasionally problems. But if a person is liked by everyone then in most cases it shows they have adopted the mentality of the hypocrites by being two-faced. If the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, were not loved by all how can a normal person achieve this status? This is the reason one should not believe in propaganda as the group that were mistreated the most in this way were the Holy Prophets, peace  be upon them. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Sunan Ibn Majah, number 4023.

For example, the Holy Prophet Mosa, peace be upon him, was once falsely accused of illegal relations by a shameless woman. She was enticed into slandering him by the enemy of Allah, the Exalted, Quraoon. When she accused the Holy Prophet Mosa, peace be upon him, publically during a religious gathering he interrogated her. When she observed his reaction she immediately retracted her accusation and admitted the truth. As a result Allah, the Exalted, destroyed Quraoon by commanding the Earth to swallow him and his great treasury. This incident has been recorded in Imam Dhahabi’s, The Major Sins, Pages 166-167. Chapter 28 Al Qasas, verse 81:

“And We caused the earth to swallow him and his home…”

The Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, were slandered on many occasions but they remained steadfast on their mission until they were granted victory by Allah, the Exalted. When Allah, the Exalted, decides to complete a task like aiding the one who spreads the true word of faith the entire creation combined cannot stop Him.

Muslims must accept that they too will face hardships when spreading the word of Islam. Therefore, they must follow in the footsteps of the Holy Prophets, peace be upon them, by remaining steadfast in the face of difficulties. This was the attitude of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and the righteous predecessors. If one desires to join them in the next world they must adopt this attitude also.

In addition, the attitude demonstrated by Abu Lahab in this particular incident is an aspect of hypocrisy which Muslims must avoid.

This type of person spreads corruption in society. This negative characteristic affects all social levels beginning from a family unit and ending at the international level. This type of person dislikes seeing people uniting on good as this may cause the worldly status of others to increase beyond their own. This drives them to backbiting and slander in order to cause people to turn against each other. Their evil attitude destroys their own ties of kinship and when they observe other families who are happy it drives them to destroy their happiness also. They are fault finders who dedicate their time unveiling the mistakes of others in order to drag their social status down. They are the first people to begin gossiping about others and act deaf whenever good things are spoken about. Peace and quiet disturbs them so they seek to create problems in order to entertain themself. They fail to remember the Hadith found in Sunan Ibn Majah, number 2546. It advises that whoever covers the faults of others Allah, the Exalted, will cover their faults. But whoever seeks out and unveils the faults of others Allah, the Exalted, will expose their faults to the people. So in realty, this type of person is only unveiling their own faults to society even though they believe they are exposing the faults of others.

Emma took one last look in the mirror, fluffing her hair and touching up her lipstick.  She nodded, pleased with the look she’d managed to achieve.  She’d taken far longer than she’d like to admit choosing her dress for tonight’s date with Killian.  She wanted to look nice, but keep it a touch on the casual side, not wanting to scare him away anymore than she no doubt already had with her paper.

She’d landed on a yellow, thigh length shirt dress with tiny black polka dots, black buttons down the front and a thin black belt.  During class, she’d caught him looking at her hair more than once, and so she’d opted to leave it down, beach waves teased the slightest bit for some extra volume.

She imagined him running his fingers through her tresses, letting the hair slide gently through his fingers as he brought her toward him for a kiss.  Would he be that bold on a first date?  She rather doubted it, but she wanted it.  Oh, how she wanted it.

There was so much she wanted, and she hoped, given enough time and enough dates, she’d get all of it.

Emma supposed she should be a touch freaked out that she was already thinking about long term with Killian, but she wasn’t.  All of this felt right, and she couldn’t wait to begin the relationship that she hoped would span many, many years.

With one last tossel of her hair, Emma turned off the bathroom light and stepped into the common room of the apartment.  She couldn’t help but chuckled as she came face to face with Mary Margaret and Ruby, huge smiles plastered across their faces.

Mary Margaret raised a camera to her eyes and snapped away as Emma came fully into the room.

“What are you doing?” Emma asked with a laugh.

“Somebody has a big date tonight,” Mary Margaret said in a singsong voice, “and I thought it needed to be documented with photos.”

Emma rolled her eyes good-naturedly.  “Don’t oversell it.  It’s just a first date.”

“It is not just a first date, and you know it,” Ruby countered.  “You’re head over heels for that man already, and if what I saw at lunch this afternoon was any indication, he’s just as far gone as you.”

Emma felt her stomach swoop.  She couldn’t deny it.  She was far gone for Killian.  “Yeah, well, don’t you dare scare him off or there might not end up being a second date.”

“I don’t know, Emma,” Mary Margaret said, snapping another picture from a different angle.  “Ruby’s right.  Killian does seem to be really into you.  I have a feeling it would take a lot more than our good-natured ribbing to scare him off.”

Their conversation was interrupted by a tentative knock at the door, and Mary Margaret squealed, clapping her hands in delight.  “He’s here!”

Emma shook her head, smiling at her friends’ antics, feeling her heart begin to pound in anticipation of the night ahead.  She opened the door, and promptly lost any and all train of thought she might have had.

Killian looked amazing.  Dark, black jeans, royal blue button up, black sports coat, hair artfully mussed.  He grinned a touch self-consciously as he held a single, long-stemmed red rose out to her. Emma felt a rush of desire, the strongest urge to simply pull him toward her and kiss the holy hell out of him.

Probably not the best way to start the date, although, if she had anything to say about it, that urge would certainly play itself out at some point during the evening.

“Swan,” he breathed, “You look…”

She grinned at him.  “I know,” she said cheekily.  

He chuckled, stepping forward to offer her the rose he carried.  She took it, bringing it gently to her nose and inhaling the luscious aroma.  “Thanks.”

After taking a moment to put the rose in water, Emma grabbed a coat .  “Shall we?” she asked.

“Absolutely,” he answered, guiding her from the apartment with a hand to the small of her back.  

“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” Ruby called from her perch on the sofa.

“Pretty sure there’s nothing you wouldn’t do, Rubes,” Emma answered with a laugh.

Her friend winked at her.  “Exactly.”

With another laugh, and a shake of her head, Emma stepped out the door, sharing a smile with Killian.

“Sorry about them,” Emma said as they walked down the flight of stairs and Killian gestured to a black chevelle.  He led her to the passenger side, gallantly opened the door, and helped her inside.  “They mean well.  They’re just a little…much…sometimes.”

He smiled fondly at her as he slid into his seat behind the wheel and started the engine.  “They only want your happiness, Swan, and I certainly can’t fault them for that.  I…I only hope I can provide that for you.”

He was so self-deprecating, and had such a low opinion of himself.  They’d need to work on that.  One day she hoped to show him how very much he mattered.

“You’re already succeeding on that front,” she reassured.  His resulting smile was utterly delighted.

“So,” Killian said, turning toward her.  “Where are we headed, Swan?”

“I booked us reservations at that little Italian restaurant downtown,” Emma said.  “Belle Notte, I think it’s called.”

“Never been there,” Killian said with a nod, pulling away from his parking spot on the street and heading in the direction she’d indicated, “but I’ve heard it’s quite the romantic spot.”

“I hope so,” Emma answered.  “I was hoping to pull out all the stops and really make an impression on this date.”

The smile he gave her was nothing short of absolute adoration.  “Emma, I assure you.  You can’t help but make an impression.  I’ve no doubt the smile wouldn’t leave my face even if you’d planned on staying in and eating cold left-overs whilst wearing sweats.”

The drive to the restaurant was short, only a few minutes, and they filled the time with small talk.  Once parked, Killian hurried to her side of the car to open the door, and after he’d shut it behind her, she reached out and took his hand, lacing their fingers.  He looked startled for a moment, but he didn’t pull away.  Indeed, after a moment, he squeezed her hand, a delighted grin joining the twin spots of color on his face.

A smiling hostess showed the two of them to their table, and true to form, Killian held her seat for her before taking his own.

“Such a gentleman,” she murmured, reaching over and taking his hands in both of hers as soon as they were situated.  She couldn’t help herself, just wanted to touch him, be connected to him.  This pull she felt between them was so strong, so irresistible it almost scared her.

Almost.

But she felt so good, so utterly and incandescently happy being here with him, that there was no room for fear or any other negative emotion.

“I strive to always be a gentleman, love,” he said.  “My brother taught me the importance of treating a woman with respect.”

“I didn’t know you had a brother!” Emma said, caressing his hand with her thumb.

He glanced aside, the shadows filling his eyes for just a moment.  “He passed some years back.”

She felt like an absolute heel.  “Killian, I’m sorry,” she said.  “If I’d known, I’d never have brought it up.”

He smiled gently at her, waving away her concerns.  “Not at all, Swan,” he said.  “It was long ago.  The pain has faded enough that I can remember him fondly.”

A waitress stopped by their table, giving them menus and listing the specials of the night.  As soon as she’d walked away, Emma turned toward Killian.  “Should I order us some drinks?”

He glanced aside, scratching at the back of his ear.  “No, I…I don’t think so.”

“Afraid you’ll find me even more irresistible after a few libations?” she flirted.

He reddened further, even as he grinned.  “No,” he answered. “I’m fairly certain it’s not possible for me to find you any more irresistible than I do right now.  You, love, are extraordinary.”

This time Emma’s cheeks reddened as she smiled at the compliment. 

“It’s just…” he went on, looking uncomfortable again.  “I’m sort of…allergic…to alcohol.  Never touch the stuff.”

It was odd.  He seemed beyond embarrassed to admit the fact, perhaps even ashamed.  She shrugged.  “It’s no big deal.  We don’t need booze to make for an enjoyable night.”

“Really?” he asked, eyes widening.  “I’ve endured more than my fair share of mockery for my preference for goats milk over hard liquor.”

There it was again, his low opinion of himself.  It was long past time to begin moving him past that.

“Killian,” she said, lacing their fingers and squeezing his hands.  “I wish you could see yourself the way I see you.  You are…honestly, you’re kind of amazing.”

He colored even more.  “I’m not so sure about that…”

“Well, I am,” she said firmly.  “So how about you take my word for it?  Whoever it was in your past that made you feel less-than was an idiot, and they didn’t have a clue what they were missing.”

His eyes softened at her words, something big and overwhelming–gratitude? Hope?--shining from them.

“I have to admit, goat’s milk is kinda a weird substitute for alcohol,” she chuckled, “but hey.  To each their own.”

Dinner was an enjoyable affair.  The food was good, and the conversation was even better.  As they talked and laughed, sharing tidbits about their lives, their hopes and dreams, Emma found herself enjoying everything about Killian.  It was more than just the animalistic attraction she felt toward him.  She genuinely liked him; enjoyed his company; felt that above and beyond the romantic feelings they might have for each other, they could become deep and lasting friends.

Emma knew that regardless of what their relationship might bring–whether it worked out or didn’t–she wanted to keep him in her life.

When dinner finished, neither of them wanted the evening to come to a close, and so they opted to go to a local park, holding hands as they strolled through the nature pathways under the stars.  It was a magical night, with romance in the air, though Emma suspected there was truly nothing special about the night or the air.  It was the man she was with.  He brought the butterflies just with his smile.

When had she gotten so cheesy? She was so into him it was ridiculous.

By the time the evening chill began to descend upon them, they returned to his car, knowing the end of the date was fast approaching.

He didn’t start the car immediately, instead gazing sightlessly down at the steering column, looking like he was warring within himself.  Finally he turned to look at her, and there was trepidation in his eyes.  He seemed to be girding up his courage to say something to her, and Emma felt a hint of unease.

Didn’t he enjoy tonight as much as she did?

“Emma…:” he began, drawing out her name.

“Killian, whatever it is, just tell me,” she said, feeling the unease grow at his strange behavior.  “If you aren’t into me or whatever, it’s okay.  I can handle it.”

His eyes widened.  “I’m making a right mess of this,” he said.  “Of bloody course I’m into you.  This has been…well, it’s been the most enjoyable evening I’ve spent in years.  It’s just…remember how I told you I don’t, um, pillage and plunder on the first date?”

“Yeah?”

“Well, it’s…um…it’s more than that,” he admitted.  “I’ve actually…well, I’ve never slept with a woman.  None of my past dates have ever gotten that far.  And…I just hope it’s not a problem for you if we take things slowly.  It’s not that I’m not attracted to you.  Gods, but I am!  It’s just…”

He broke off, shrugging self-consciously.

Her heart turned over, the tenderness overwhelming her when he glanced aside.

She reached up, turning his face toward her, meeting his eyes.  “Killian, trust me, it’s not a problem.  I’m not exactly all that experienced either.”

“You’re not?” he asked.  “A woman as beautiful and desirable as you?”

She smiled gently at him. “I mean I’ve had long make out sessions, some heavy petting, that sort of thing, but I’ve never, you know, given all of myself to any man.”

He looked surprised, but he reached up and took her hand, squeezing gently.

“It’s not that I’m some sort of prude or something,” she said.  “It’s just…”

How did she explain this?

“Aye?” he prompted.  “It’s just what?”

“Killian, I told you I grew up in the foster system, right?”

He nodded.

“I never met my parents.  Have no idea who they are or why they gave me up,” she said, “but I like to imagine they had this epic love story, that they were like, I don’t know, Snow White and Prince Charming or something.  I like to imagine they didn’t want to give me up, but something–some outside force or curse or something–separated us, and one day I’ll find them again, and I’ll be inspired by their love for the ages–both for each other and for me.”

He cupped her face, caressing her cheek with his thumb.

“I know it’s stupid,” she said, “and I’m not naive.  I’m sure the truth is nothing like that, but…I wish it could be.  When I think about having sex with a guy, I want it to be like that fairy tale I imagine for my parents.  I want it to mean something, not just be the scratching of an itch, not just something you do because you’re dating somebody or because you find the other person hot.  When I sleep with a guy, I want it to be because I am truly, genuinely in love with him.  So no. I have no objection to us taking this thing as slowly as you want.”

They stood awkwardly before her apartment door a few minutes later.  Emma had never wanted a night to end less, and yet she knew if she invited him inside she would find it very difficult to abide by his desire to take things slowly.

The question was, just how should they bring this evening to a close?

Killian shuffled his feet awkwardly one to the other, looking aside, and Emma could read him well enough by now to know if anything more was going to happen tonight, she’d need to be the one to make it happen.

Every fiber of her being wanted something more, and as she’d never been one to stand on ceremony, she went for it, grabbing him by his lapels and dragging him to her.  She’d surprised him; she could tell, and for the barest fraction of a second, he froze, but then he was kissing her back, tentatively bringing one hand to the back of her head and holding her to him, wrapping the other arm around her waist and pulling her close.

From the first touch of her lips to his, it was like a fire erupted within her.  This was bliss.  This was heaven, but she needed more.

Opening her mouth, she swiped her tongue against the seam of his lips, and he gasped in response.  She took full advantage of the moment, plunging her tongue within the confines of his mouth.  His resulting moan was the single most sensual thing she’d ever experienced in her entire twenty-two years of existence.

She pulled him even closer, so close that she could feel the rumble of his moans against her chest, could feel the evidence that though his mind and heart wanted to take things slowly, his body very much did not.

It was time to end this–unfortunately–before they both completely lost their heads and started going at it right out here in the open.  With great difficulty, Emma pulled her mouth free, resting her forehead against his, because she needed a minute. 

(More than a minute, really.  More like a lifetime, but it was far too early in the relationship to have those kinds of thoughts.)

For several moments, they merely stood there, foreheads pressed together, both breathing so heavily they sounded as though they’d sprinted up ten flights of stairs.  Finally, Killian took a step backwards and smiled, looking into her eyes with awe.

“That was…” he began.

“Even better than I imagined when I wrote about it,” she said with a delighted giggle.

“Aye,” he agreed, his smile, if possible, widening even more.

She reached over, ran her hands from his shoulders down to his hands, linking their fingers, and stepping back into his space.  She wanted nothing more than to surge up and take his lips again–kissing Killian Jones was addicting as hell–but with restraint she felt she really deserved a medal for, she resisted.

“May I ask you something?” she murmured instead.

“Of course.”

“Will you go out with me again?”

His smile grew, and really, what more answer did she need?

After murmuring goodnight, Emma slipped inside, leaning back against the door, closing her eyes and smiling in utter rapture.  She’d told him she wanted a fairy tale, and this evening had been as close to one as she could ever imagine getting.  Her heart was so full, she doubted it could contain another drop of joy.

Perhaps this was the infatuation stage of the relationship.  Perhaps things would eventually cool down to something of a slow burn between them, but she was determined to bask in the joy of falling in love for as long as she was able.

“Looks like someone had a good date,” Ruby said from her spot on the sofa.

Emma looked over and barked out a laugh.  Both Ruby and Mary Margaret sat on the sofa, excited smiles on their faces, looking every bit like parents waiting up for their daughter after her prom.

“Nah, it wasn’t a good date,” Emma said with a happy sigh as she plopped herself down on the couch in between her two best friends.  “It was quite possibly the best date in the history of dating.”

“Tell us everything,” Mary Margaret said excitedly.  “I want all the details.”

And that was a request Emma was more than happy to agree to.

 Notes:

–I accept no responsibility for the cavities you may have gotten from the ridiculously sugary fluffiness of this chapter.  I just wanted to try to capture the joy and euphonia of the very beginning of a relationship.

–In canon, I loved how supportive Killian was of Emma, how much he believed in her and built her up at every turn.  But at the same time, I kind of hated that we didn’t get as much of Emma building up Killian.  I get it; I really do.  Her walls being as high as they were, it was very difficult for her to let her guard down enough to do so, but I wanted to kind of reverse the roles in this au.  Killian was the one who needed to be supported and believed in and built up, and Emma was more than happy to do it.

–BTW, in this universe, there is no Neal, because 1. In my opinion any universe where Neal does not exist is a good universe and 2. While this version of Emma has some walls, she doesn’t have as many as in canon.  In my opinion, in canon Emma’s difficult upbringing in the foster system of course scarred her, but it was what Neal did–not only leaving her but framing her for his crimes–and its subsequent consequence–being forced to give up her son–that truly cemented the walls around her heart.

The two manuscript chapters of Persuasion possess unique status in being, as far as we know, the only surviving holograph pages of a novel that Jane Austen planned and completed for publication. They have survived in part because in their extant form they did not see print in the posthumous first edition of 1818, being withdrawn and replaced at a late stage in writing. They were intended as the concluding chapters (10 and 11 in the second and final volume) of the novel. The manuscript fragment, an untitled,1 unpaginated single gathering of sixteen leaves, is dated in three places: at the top right hand corner of the first leaf, immediately above ‘Chap. 10’, ‘July 8’; at the bottom right hand corner of what would be p. 27 (f.14r), ‘July 16. | 1816’; and at the bottom right hand corner of p.28 (f.14v) 'July 18. - 1816.' The ending that the manuscript represents was subsequently almost wholly rejected in favour of the ending that found its way into print, written some time between 18 July and 6 August (according to Cassandra Austen's memorandum).2 The last leaf (p.32; f.16v) has pasted lengthwise a strip of paper on which is written in pencil, traced over in ink, 'The contents of this Drawer | for Anna’. The hand appears to be that of Cassandra Austen. James Edward Austen-Leigh first mentioned the existence of the manuscript fragment in his Memoir of Jane Austen, where he derived his circumstantial account from family recollections. He subsequently included an edited version of the cancelled Chapter 10 in the 1871 edition.3 Both manuscript chapters were transcribed for the first time in Chapman’s Two Chapters of Persuasion of 1926.

Provenance

In 1870, when Austen-Leigh brought it to public notice, the manuscript was in the possession of his half-sister Anna Lefroy (1793-1872). She appears to have inherited it according to the stipulations of the slip of paper pasted lengthways to its last leaf. The manuscript remained in family hands until it was acquired by the British Museum in December 1925.4

Physical structure

Made up of sixteen unnumbered leaves of laid paper, originally quired into a single gathering, each leaf has been separated, trimmed, foliated, and mounted by the British Library into a handsome morocco bound volume. The trimmed leaves measure 155 x 90 mm; they are watermarked ‘1812’, though, from the cutting of the leaves, there is no complete mark visible. Page 28 (f. 14v) forms the final page of Chapter 11. The final two leaves (ff. 15 and 16) contain an additional passage of text marked by X to be included at p. 16 (f. 8v) of Chapter 10. At p. 19 (f. 10r) a piece of paper (a little under half the size of the original page) was pasted down cancelling the writing underneath and containing a revised portion of text, fourteen lines long. This pasted paper has been separated and mounted on a guard above the original. Integral to the modern binding of the volume and before the mounted manuscript leaves there are seven unfoliated preliminary leaves [inferred pagination pp. i-xiv in the pagination table below]. A further nineteen unfoliated leaves [inferred pagination pp. xv-lii in the pagination table below] follow the mounted manuscript pages. These modern leaves are blank apart from a library stamp [p. i] and a page with a pencilled collation schema [p. vii], illustrating the foliation of the manuscript before its leaves were separated and library mounted.

The manuscript

The manuscript is written and corrected throughout in brown iron-gall ink. There is no pagination, no clear or regular paragraphing, and no separation of speaking parts one from another. Chapter divisions are clearly marked. The pages are filled in an even hand with signs of concurrent writing, erasure, and revision, and several passages of heavy deletion and substitution: some of the rewriting is interlinear, and some required extending the space of the already full page in different ways. With no calculated blank spaces and no obvious way of incorporating large revision or expansion she had to find other strategies – the pasted patch and the longer passage, written on the last three pages of the booklet and keyed for insertion at page 16.5

I'm starting to write a fanfiction for repcomm, how would you describe Darman POV?

Okay, um... this is a very broad question, so this is a very BROAD and extremely lengthy answer (sorry but I couldn’t not include text evidence.)

But in general? Darman...

1. often looks externally calm, even to his brothers, and is very good at hiding resentment or anger. people mistake him as calm or level several times in the series when he’s actually having a hard time in his thoughts. Eventually he reaches the point in 501st where it can no longer be hidden, but I think he’s been feeling it for a lot longer than anyone realized.

“He’d been alive for eleven standard years, coming up on twelve. He was twenty-three or twenty-four the manual said. It wasn’t enough time to live.

Sergeant Kal said we’d been robbed.

Fierfek, I hope Etain can’t feel me getting angry.

“I wish I could just sit and relax like you, Dar,” Atin said. “How’d you get to be so calm? You didn’t learn it from Kal, that’s for sure.”

There’s just Sergeant Kal and Etain and my brothers. Oh, and Jusik. General Jusik’s one of us. No one else really cares.

“I’ve got a clean conscience,” Darman said. It had come as a surprise to him after years of cloistered training on Kamino that many cultures in the galaxy regarded him as a killer, something immoral. “That or I’m too tired to worry.”

2. Isn’t always up front with his emotions when he feels they’d be burdensome on a loved one and wants to be outwardly positive. See the above conversation with Atin, or his hesitance to call Etain a few chapters after Fi’s injury. 

Notably in the scene above he does make mention of talking over serious things with Etain, like what would happen to the clones after the war, but I feel like he hides some of his more in-the-moment feelings and people don’t expect it because on the surface he seems like the uncomplicated one,

Brain-dead people sometimes regained consciousness and then reported what they’d heard during the coma, and Darman could think of nothing more awful in that moment than Fi being in some terrible paralysis but feeling everything. Dead was better. He wanted a cleaner end than Fi.

“Call Etain,” Niner suggested, “She always cheers you up.”

But Darman didn’t want to call her just to rage about how unfair things were. He settled down with a holozine so no one would talk to him for a while, and the others played blades, throwing knives into a target board divided into rings and quardrants. When he’d come to terms with this, he’d have something more positive to say to her. They could talk about where they’d go when they got some leave together.

I can’t imagine a mission without Fi now.

3. it’s a case by case basis though. like any human being, Dar is complicated. It really depends on the in the moment situation. Notably above, his reluctance to call and be a burden was for a situation that had been happening for a while, while in the immediate aftermath he called Etain pretty immediately.

Fi didn’t react, but then Darman knew he wouldn’t . The point was he’d said it, and that meant he’d do it. Reluctantly, he followed Niner back to the mess deck, and found a quiet corner to pour his heart out in a message to Etain.

He could have unburdened himself on his brothers, but they all knew what he was thinking anyway.

4. He notices a lot of little details. Even more specifically, he notices and is intensely focused on small changes or signals in the people he cares about. He also very much wants to provide emotional support and is watching for the cues that it’s needed, especially in Etain. 

 You can see it with Dar noticing Fi and his music, or when he goes after Etain in Triple Zero, or at the end of True Colors when he’s intensely aware of Etain’s body language radiating distress and mentally immediately tries to figure out why she’s upset and put her at ease.

Darman cut into Fi’s personal circut to speak but was instantly deafened by the volume of the music. That was how Fi dealt with things: a thick wall of noise and chatter to shut out the next moment. (True Colors, Chapter 1,  page number unknown because Kindle is an ass.)

He caught a note in her voice that said she was holding back; maybe there was someone with her. The holovids showed clandestine love affairs as exciting, but Darman just found the secrecy miserable. (True Colors, Chapter 10,  page number unknown because Kindle is an ass.)

Etain had that same expression he’d just seen on Skirata’s face. He knew he must have said something wrong, but wasn’t sure what. He unfolded her arms with a little gentle pressure and took her hand. (True Colors, Chapter 19,  page number unknown because Kindle is an ass.)

“The baby’s upset you somehow, hasn’t it? he said. Of course; being a Jedi, Etain would have never known her parents. Does it remind you of being taken from your family?”  (True Colors, Chapter 19,  page number unknown because Kindle is an ass.)

There. He’d said it, and she would feel better now, let off the hook. There was no point dwelling on his shortened life span. Neither of them knew what was around the corner. He’d take the pressure off her, because it was the responsible thing to do.

The Skydome gardens were just as beautiful and fascinating as Etain had promised. He could tell she was trying to be cheerful and enthusiastic about them, but there was something sad and wondered about her that he didn’t know how to make better. 

Evacuating Qiilura must have been worse than she let on. But she tell him in her own good time.

5. He’s pretty intensely protective, and not in an entirely healthy way? It never manifests as a doubt about his loved ones’ competency so much as a desire to jump someone else for disrespecting them. He is a worrier, but it’s not in a “no, they can’t do this” kind of way that too many shitty male romance leads get stuck in. He’s defensive of his relationships in a way that exceeds normal not-fooling-around.

 Wherever it was they were sending her, she could tell him, couldn’t she? Maybe she didn’t want to worry him. Of course I’m worried. I’m always worried. (True Colors, Chapter 10,  page number unknown because Kindle is an ass.)

Darman swallowed a sudden an unexpected desire to tell  Fi to lay off Etain, and in no uncertain terms. Fi knew nothing about her, nothing. Darman was ambushed by a split moment of protectiveness, and was immediately embarrassed by it. (Hard Contact, Pg. 222.) [ Idk why this one has page numbers and not the others.]

“Open up, or stand away from the door,” Etain yelled. She had no concept of cover, but she was a Jedi and had her own early-warning system. Darman was watching her back anyway. “Where’s the General?” Fi said.

Darman interrupted. “Saying goodbye to Gett.” He seemed to be taking an intense interest in Etain’s whereabouts. “Can you see Sergeant Kal? She said he was meeting us.”

“So… you’ve been ordered about by a geriatric and a child, have you?”

Darman’s voice frosted over. “Scorch, do you like medcenter food?” (Triple Zero, Pg. 119.) [Seriously, Kindle just fucking hates True Colors.] 

“I think it’s kind of encouraging.” Scorch chuckled. “Atin gets a cute Twi’lek girlfriend, Dar gets his very own general-”

“-and Scorch gets a thick ear if he doesn’t shut it right now.”

The comlink was suddenly silent, except for the occasional sound of swallowing. Darman wasn’t in a joking mood when it came to Etain. He never had been, not even on Qiilura, when there hadn’t been anything between them. (Triple Zero, Pg. 245.)

“Why did he need Etain then?”

“Maybe to show her how it’s done.”

Fi watched Darman bristle. (Triple Zero, Pg. 176.)

Atin hadn’t seen Laseema since the start of the siege, and just chatted with her in snatched moments by comlink. Darman couldn’t even talk to Etain until she dropped out of hyperspace; Enacca was taking her time. He checked his comlink, saw no message, and reminded himself that Etain was fine. (Order 66, pg. 371)

6. Darman is captivated by very small things/small details/small moments of beauty.

It was definitely autumn .A mist had blanketed the countryside like a sea. A puddle had formed in the sheeting stretched over the shelter, and Darman went to scoop it out but stopped.

“What are those things?” he asked, “I saw them on the river, too.”

Ruby and sapphire colored insects were dancing above the surface of the puddle. “Daywings,” Etain said.

“I’ve never seen colors like it….”

…”They’re amazing,” he said, completely absorbed by the spectacle. (Hard Contact, Pg. 182.)

7. Like most of the clones, he starts more naive/optimistic and then becomes more and more disillusioned the further in the series you go.

It was still tough to stand back and let the convoy take it. Darman itched for an excuse to open fire. He’d gone charging to the rescue before on Qiilura, breaking cover to save civilians, but he’d been a kid then on his second deployment.  The longer you spent fighting, the more cautious you became.(Order 66,  Pg. 65.)

8. Arguably all of the above paints a little bit harsher a picture than it should. I also generally see Darman as very genuinely soft and caring with his loved ones. He’s also considerate and generous. One of his love languages is food/small gifts & gestures; I swear it.

“It’s getting light,” Darman said. He sat down cross-legged in the hide, armor plates clacking against something. “You look cold. Need any more pain-killers?”

Etain had achieved a consistent level of dampness and pain that she could live with.She was too tired to think of anything else. She’d even stopped noticing the persistent odor of wet merlie wool. “I’m okay.”

“If we light a fire, we’ll be a magnet for half the Separatist army.” He rummaged in his belt and held out a ration cube to her, still that incongruous amalgam of fresh naivete and utterly clinical killer. She shook her head. He pulled out a bag. “Dried kuvara?”

She realized from the way he had put the fruit carefully in his belt and not his pack that he prized it. He lived on rations with all the taste appeal of rancid mott hide. The sacrifice was rather touching.

Darman leaned against the wall, all concern. “Do you want something to eat? We’re going to risk Qibbu’s nerf in glockaw sauce. Scorch reckons it’s probably armored rat.”

“I’m not sure I can face crowds right now.”

“You might be overestimating the popularity of Qibbu’s cuisine.” He shrugged. “I could probably get the cook to stun the thing with my Deecee and send it up by room service.” …

“Only if you keep me company.”

“Yeah, eating armored rat alone is probably asking for it.” He grinned suddenly, and she felt illuminated by it. “You might need first aid.”

Darman thought it was time they got on making friends with the Marits. He stood up and wandered over to the lizards, wondering if there might be anything in Eyat that he could acquire for Etain. 9. He does have a light-hearted side; it’s not all just ruminating.

She was suddenly aware of Darman looking up at her, grinning, and if it wasn’t for his surroundings, he could have been any young man showing off his prowess to a woman. (Triple Zero pg. 182 ish)

Even Darman had fallen happily into it. He was engrossed in the game, shoulder-charging Boss and knocking Jusik flat. (Triple Zero, pg. 158)

10. He’s just as much a romantic as Etain is.

“I never stopped thinking about you, either,” Darman said, “Not for a moment.” (Triple Zero, pg. 186)

All he wanted at the end of it was some time with Etain. (True Colors, Chapter 1, page number unknown because Kindle is an ass.)

He couldn’t even recall putting on his plates. His mind was on Etain.  (True Colors, Chapter 10, page number unknown because Kindle is an ass)

He was fed up finding things in common with insects. he was a man, and he missed his girl. He wanted to go home- and he realized he had no idea where home was.

There’s honestly also plenty to be said about Dar not wanting to upset the equilibrium in his squad- he doesn’t want special treatment, or to have more than his brothers. That’s...pretty standard for this series though?

Also Darman really doesn’t react well to secrets post Venku reveal, but lbr, I’m not crawling through 501st for quotes.

koito is calling tsukishima's name constantly, and he likes to put an extra "a" at the end, so i thought i'd keep an eye out for instances of that as i was reading golden kamuy in japanese. i have rendered each line exactly the way he said it in canon, with links to screenshots of panels where applicable.

CONCLUSION: koito extended the last syllable of tsukishima's name a total of 29 times. he said it with a hiragana A あ 10 times. he said it with a katakana A ア 19 times. (i really don't think there is any difference in meaning or connotation when he uses one A or the other. i think noda-sensei just switches it up for fun. likewise, i kept track of it just for fun.) he used a double exclamation point 17 times. he used a question mark twice. there was one tsukishimaaa, one tsukishimaaaa, and one tsukishimaan. and i'm pretty confident that i didn't miss any, but i'd have to reread the entire manga to double-check.

in koito's section of the official fanbook, in the "character connections" panel, the arrow pointing to tsukishima says, "Tsukishimaa!!" and the blurb says, "This is the subordinate meant to assist him, so whenever there's trouble, he'll start by calling his name."

TRC Translation Notes Volume 22 Part 1 (Ch 167)

Yes, it’s THAT chapter, now with translation notes! @giniroangou saves us all, once again. 

Chapter 167

p.10 - This happens a lot, but it’s more clear in the original text that Kurogane was aware that the voice he heard was Tomoyo’s and he’s just reaffirming it with her here; “That voice back then…” “It was me.”

p.11 - Though the translation has the gist of it, a closer translation of Tomoyo’s lines is as follows: “If you want to go together, if you wish it from the bottom of your heart, you must exchange something that holds the same magical power as him.”

p.12 - Waaaay back in chapter 2, when Tomoyo first casts her spell on Kurogane, she calls it a “shu” written with the kanji 呪. This word can mean “curse,” but it can also refer to a magical spell in general. This scene has her reveal its true nature by saying the word with the reading as 呪, but the base kanji as 守, meaning “protect.” It’s hard to express in English, but rather than have her call it a “ward and curse,” it’s more like she’s clarifying that the thing we were led to believe was a curse was actually a ward all along.

Tomoyo doesn’t habitually see people close to death in her dreams (at least that’s not exactly what she’s saying here) - she says that people have dreams before they die. She crossed into Kurogane’s dream (no mention of her wandering around various dreams, though I guess it’s still possible!) to tell him how to save Fai.

Tomoyo describes Fai’s curse as a spell that places the caster (in this case Fai) at its core/nucleus.

p.14 - The “...” on Kurogane’s line should come at the beginning rather than the end.

p.15 - Kurogane isn’t just asking whether Tomoyo knew that he would kill Ashura, but whether she knew that if he killed Ashura he’d end up like this (missing an arm.) Of course if you consider everything we know, the logic path becomes: Kurogane kills Ashura, inadvertently activating Fai’s curse, putting Fai in a situation from which he can only be saved by Kurogane cutting off his own arm and weakening himself.

 p.16 - Kurogane’s first line here is, “So that’s why you said all that about a ‘curse.’” We can gather that Tomoyo cast a protection spell but disguised it as a curse to try to discourage Kurogane from killing Ashura (and protect him from the events that would result) without having to tell him outright what she foresaw.

p.17-18 - Kurogane’s explanation of what he’s learned is a bit more nuanced in the Japanese version. Here’s a more direct translation: “I’ve… always wanted strength. So that no one else could take the things I hold dear away from me. But, having strength can also invite disaster. And… there are some things that strength alone can’t protect.”

p.19 - The official translation makes it sound a bit like Tomoyo’s saying Kurogane knew what true strength was all along, but no, this is growth!! I would translate her line as: “True strength… It seems you’ve come to understand what that is.”

p.20 - Regarding Fai’s outfit: I’ve seen a lot of talk in fandom over the years about what this means with people drawing all kinds of very specific implications from it, but in its broadest sense, the furisode is just a type of formal-wear for Japanese women. This is the frequent style for brides in traditional weddings, and that could certainly be something CLAMP was trying to evoke in this scene, but that is not its only usage by any means. The notion that male lovers of samurai used to wear furisode is one that I’ve seen mentioned a number of times, but have never seen a solid source on. A few years ago I searched the internet to see if I could find a Japanese source but came up with nothing. I’m not writing it off, but I am skeptical until someone can provide some reliable information about it. The closest I’ve seen is that younger samurai are often depicted in furisode because originally this was a style for both male and female children. Given that older samurai had a tradition of taking underage trainees as lovers, the two could become equated. All that said, I know very little about Japanese clothing traditions! I’d love to hear from someone who’s better informed than I am.

p.21 - Kurogane’s “Hey” here isn’t a “Yo,” which you’d normally expect from a casual greeting, but an “Oi.” WHAT IS THIS MAN.

p.23 - Significantly, “Kuro-sama” is written in quote-marks on this page, mirroring the previous instances of “Kurogane” - CLAMP wants to make damn sure we don’t miss this nickname coming back!

I was taxed at 70%, I wanted to start running in the middle of the night if I let my guard down thinking I would be working 20 hours a day and 14 hours for free. If I'd had a driver's license back then, it would have been dangerous. My body, life and my mind were dissociated, so I wasn't too moved by the 6.53 million copies.
