Eurovision Chat Over Coffee, Volunteering At Malmö's Eurovision

As ambassadors for Malmö, they can contribute to the event and experience Eurovision from behind the scenes. That could involve guiding guests around town, helping dress the city for tourists, being attached to a delegation to support their time in Malmö, and countless other roles. Johan Rönning is…

Honestly I’m so confused why people are so upset that Israel was included in Eurovision, like…my dude it’s literally a music contest for a bunch of countries---that Israel has already been included in before---not an actual political statement.
It’s literally insane to me, especially with how people were treating the Israeli contestant---protesting her, forcing her to change her song, other contestants saying shit like “talking to her doesn’t mean I support Israel,” etc. etc.
And I feel like that’s a reoccurring thing with all this mainstream pro-Palestine bullshit: y’all don’t actually care about Palestine or want to help anyone, you just want “good person points” socially, but don’t actually care about your impact.
You'll post shit like "stan Hamas" and ignore the fact that they're literally a terrorist organization dedicated to killing Jews, and that they're literally hurting Palestinians too, as well as the fact that the conflict between Israel and Palestine is only ongoing because Hamas keeps breaking the ceasefire and won't give back hostages.
But you'll ignore all of the organizations that actually help Palestine because they're run by Jews/Israelis, or even just supported by Jews and Israelis.
(And how much do you want to bet that the same people who cry- "Hamas is only doing this because of Israel's actions regarding Palestine, so it's justified/reasonable/understandable, etc." -would never say that if it was a group like, say, ISIS that was kidnapping/killing/waging war on Americans because of the US's actions in the Middle East?)
You'll harass random people on college campuses just because they're Jewish, even though they clearly have no fucking say in what a country on the other side of the world does, and barricade yourselves inside a building and be shocked when you're suspended or expelled for property damage/harassment/etc.
But you won't volunteer at any organizations that are dedicated to helping Palestine, or donate money to those organizations, or donate food/clothes/etc., or actually do anything besides whine and cry because you helped destroy a campus building and your college doesn't want you there anymore.
(Hell, 99% of y'all don't even bother volunteering for your own communities, so I know you're sure as hell not volunteering to help anyone else's---again, you just want the "good person points")
Everyone that was so gung-ho about "oh yeah, let's punch Nazis!" a few years ago are now spouting Nazi rhetoric.
Everyone that preached that bigotry is never ok, even if someone from a minority does something bad, are now the same people chanting- "Jews are shit!" -and spreading blood libel.
Everyone that was calling for solidarity between minorities and oppressed groups are now the same people ostracizing Jews because they won't condemn the only country that will actually protect them- (or rather, they'll condemn the Israeli governments actions, but won't stand side-by-side with antisemites or say that Israel should be destroyed).
Everyone that said that it wasn't okay for people to be racist towards poc because some of the BLM protests were getting out of hand/violent are now the same ones going- "oh, it's fine to be antisemitic because these disgusting Jews Zionists aren't agreeing with me on everything."
Everyone that was posting shit about being aware of misinformation and doing your research before posting something are now the ones that have no idea what Zionism actually is, don't even know which river and sea their chant means, has no clue what Israel has actually done to Palestine and is just calling it a "genocide" as a buzzword despite all the evidence stating otherwise, etc.
Like...you guys are really just proving that you don't actually have morals beyond what's socially acceptable.
"Never harass random Muslim/gay/trans/black/etc. people just for a cause or because they did something you didn't like...unless they're Jewish, then you can stalk them on campus and be physically violent towards them."
"Bigotry is never okay, even if someone from a minority does something you don't agree with or something awful...unless they're Jewish, then spread blood libel and call for the "final solution" all you want."
"Not everyone from the US/Republican states/Christian churches/etc. agrees with what their government/state/religious leaders are doing, so it's not fair to blame and ostracize them for it...unless it's Jewish people or Israelis or, G-d forbid, Jewish Israelis, then you can hate them and blame them for everything!"
Like, genuinely, fuck off.
You aren't good people, you aren't "making a difference" or "on the right side of history," you don't give a shit about morality or justice or doing any good for anyone---all you care about is your fucking popularity and the social norm.
So keep your stupid, hateful, misinformed hands off of the I/P conflict---you've proven that y'all clearly can't handle having opinions on it.

HRH the Princess of Wales in 2023 ♛
What an interesting year! The Queen of my Heart Princess of Wales' year hinged around the Coronation of King Charles III and she pulled off a truly stunning look at the event itself. She took her family volunteering with the Scouts, met the public twice (x, x), and even met Katie! Her early years work has continued, with the year starting with the Shaping Us: Campaign Launch, meetings with experts including Professor Marc Brackett, and ending with the Early Years Symposium. Catherine has also worked a lot with children and young people in general (x, x, x). This year, Catherine gained three new military positions (Fleet Air Arm, RAF Coningsby, and 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards). She has also undertaken lots of work with the military. She visited both the Welsh and Irish Guards on their national days, and she has joined training days throughout the year (x, x, x). The Princess of Wales has continued to develop her relationships with foreign royal families: she met with the Crown Prince couple of Norway and the Crown Princess Couple of Sweden at Windsor Castle; she met multiple royals at the Heads of State pre-coronation event, including her royal bestie Felipe, whom she also met at Wimbledon; and she joined a huge amount of royals at the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Rajwa al Saif. As always, a lot of Catherine's work has been linked to the arts, with a surprise appearance at Eurovision, and re-opening two different museums (x, x). The Princess of Wales continued her role as the Queen of Sports, with multiple Wimbledon appearances (x, x, x), a surprise video with Roger Federer to promote the role of ball boys and girls, multiple Rugby World Cup visits (x, x), an appearance at a 6 Nations match, and several rugby related engagements (x, x, x). Catherine has visited Wales multiple times, Scotland once and a half, and made a truly unexpected podcast appearance, but nothing was as notable as her long-awaited textiles engagements!

what was the coolest/most important thing you did with the UN? :0
so my job last summer was basically to run around Geneva CH organizing and leading big groups of students learning about the UN system, how it works, what is diplomacy, what kind of organizations exist within it.
I spent about two months planning and one month literally bursting into different UN agencies, trying to get 40 college kids places on time, sweating to death in the heatwave. WHO staff are super nice and I owe them my life. WIPO took years off my life but they have a piece of the moon in their lobby which is cool. I have beef with a Permanent Mission because they went FORTY MINUTES over their speaking time despite having a moderator present.
that was all wild all the time. the #1 coolest thing I did related to the UN was volunteering at the 2022 Nansen Awards (UNHCR awards for aid to refugees). They ended up needing to fill seats and there wasn't a lot for me to do anyway, so I kind of just...attended them. Angela Merkel spoke. A Eurovision act performed. They served Sri Lankan curry after. it was fabulous and I got a certificate for it.
on a more serious note the coolest/most important thing I did was introduce a lot of university students to the concept that you don't have to major in politics or IR to be involved in the UN. the system is massive and we need people who do every sort of thing, from every country, of every race color gender ability sexuality etc etc.
also if you work in IT please please please apply to work for the UN there are so many jobs and so many web/application portals are so so broken please

i'm adopted Scouse, moving from Bournemouth to the north in 2015, landing permanently now in Liverpool in 2020. only a couple of months later during the first lockdown, i was forced to slow down, sit with myself and start thinking about myself. my egg soon cracked in being transgender, at the later age of 23! my piece aims to show just how much being in Liverpool has aided my transition, how i found myself not only living in Liverpool but how i found my actual SELF in Liverpool too, my entire identity and the feeling of knowing who i am :) the safe and welcoming Scouse community spirit, the introduction of local GIC pilot CMAGIC aiding my medical transition, and the resulting opportunities that i found myself in. i volunteered working for Eurovision last year when we hosted, and was featured in several press interviews talking about my trans experience and why Liverpool is such a welcoming and diverse city. this led on to me volunteering with the LCR pride foundation, which i still do to this day! i don't think my transition would have gone as smoothly or opened so many gateways to finding myself and finding a direction in life if my egg had cracked anywhere else <3

A Guide To Volunteering At The Eurovision Song Contest
A Guide To Volunteering At The Eurovision Song Contest
I often describe the Eurovision Song Contest as the biggest event in the world… that you only get twelve months to plan for. Involved in the production are not just the participants but also tons of backstage staff working on everything from make-up to sound, rigging to security. At the Liverpool edition in 2023, 5,330 people were working at the Contest in some capacity, a number that excludes…

Hi friends🖤
The week after the Esc final was pretty horrible for me mentally. For the first time ever I was physically ill and actually cried because of the results. The result might have been what I expected, but wasn’t expecting to feel so betrayed and let down. I was really worried I’d start spiraling, but I am lucky enough to have you all here, which really helped. I want to say how sorry I am.
I’m sorry that the televoters didn’t get the winner they wanted. I’m sorry for all of you who used their money to vote in vain. I’m sorry for my country not getting the opportunity to host the contest next year, celebrate and show our culture and I’m sorry that I don’t get the opportunity to welcome my mutuals to Finland. I’m so, so sorry for Yle who put up the best national selection of the year and did everything they could to get the best possible result, and it still wasn’t enough. Most of all I’m sorry for Käärijä who gave his all and damn near burned himself out to reach his dream to win Eurovision and then felt like he had failed us.
As the last seven days have gone by, I’ve slowly gone through the stages of grief. Denial that the results can’t be true and believing that they must be rigged. Anger at the nepotism and favouritism. Bargaining, thinking that maybe the Swedish delegation feels bad and lets Finland co-host next year or even gives us the trophy. Depression and fear that we are never going to get this close to winning ever again and this was our only shot. Finally, acceptance that everyone played by the contest’s rules and the end result is what it is.
Yle made a great choice of showing Käärijä’s Ice Hall show live and making it available all around the world. It was the marketplace celebration he wanted and deserved, but even better. Every single person in that audience was there for him and only him, as was every viewer wherever in the world they might be. Käärijä got the main character moment he deserved and that really warms my heart. The show also gave a closure to the after-Eurovision week and the post Eurovision depression and the new national trauma that all of Finland was starting to experience. It kinda ended this season on a high note for us.
Last night I unpacked the last stuff from my suitcase, put my bolero away, folded my Käärijä shirts to the closet. Then I went for a walk by the seashore, just to clean my thoughts from all the literal and figurative noise. And I remembered how small we are, and how unsignificant everything really is. And after a while, the numb grief was repleced by gratefulness. So I wanted to say thank you.
Thank you to every single one of you. Thank you for all the love you have shown to Finland and Käärijä this year. Thank you for the comments and likes, thank you for making art and memes, thank you for streaming and voting and supporting us. Finland, Finnish artists and Finnish language are so often forgotten and being in the spotlight of the whole world right now feels unreal and incredible. Thank you for watching our silly little national selection and their content, thank you for following Käärijä’s journey.
Thank you to everyone in Liverpool and all over the world who was rooting for Finland this year. I’ll never forget the German journalist who told me off the record that she wanted Finland to win, or the half dozen Spanish guys in green boleros, or the local volunteer who sang cha cha cha with me in the middle of the street, or the people who chanted for Käärijä at the arena, or the Brits next to us who came to give us comforting hugs when the result was clear. I’ve never seen my nation supporting something or someone in such a unison. The green colour, the outfits, the haircuts; cakes, drinks, decorations, celebrations all over. I’m thankful that people showed up at the airport and made clear to Käärijä how proud we are of him and how much everyone loves him. Not only did he reach a result most of couldn’t have even hoped for a few years back, he did it in our own language. He put Finland on a pedestal for the world to see and united this whole country in a way I’ve never seen before. He showed us how important it is to be yourself, be kind, accept your flaws and laugh at them, just believe in yourself and always do your best. Thank you, Jere from Vantaa. You deserve the world.

Seeing all of the sad cha chas... Okay... Please look past your emotions, your ingrained competitiveness, the interviews and the veneer and the PR and consider cold hard facts.
Normally, the country that wins Eurovision takes on most of the expenses for hosting the next contest. It's a buttload of money, and very little time. For small countries with low levels of corruption and high levels of accountability, this buttload can eat into the budget.
Most of them do NOT want to win; it's practical and viable not to win. The countries that are actively trying to win *cough*russia *cough cough* are often corrupt and thus are also counting on laundering money *cough* sochiolympics *hacking fit*.
You've probably heard that the contest is 'political'. Thing is, the lion's share of this political part is not things like Greece and Armenia making out in public every year, no. It's the deciding behind the scenes who will pay up next year — and the jury acting accordingly. Sweden has a huge anniversary next year. Half a century ago ABBA happened. I assure you, Sweden agreed to pay. Buckled up, took a deep breath in, and agreed to win. They are already engaged in organizing, and probably have been for some time, which is awesome for all of the regular folk involved, because, you know, there's a lot of them, it's a lot of work and very little time.
As someone who worked as staff during Eurovision, I can confirm that it's daunting and a crazy hassle and the organizational part is pure nightmare. Although mostly it's just friggin' expensive. In the eyes of the organizers, behind the scenes, the country that wins is not so much a winner, but more like someone condemned. Like a guy who lost the bet and has to pay for all of the rounds of all of the drinks while also being the designated driver. The worst part used to be, the winning performer was sometimes blamed instead of being honored and congratulated: they might act jubilant in public, they might then get hugged and honored by regular folk ... and then proceed to endure some of the worst shit behind the scenes. More often than not, this singer then fades into obscurity, if enough moneybags are mad.
While the runner-up, if they actually know what's what, will act sad in public, before the press, sure, but inwardly there will be nothing but relief. This is called diplomacy, and this is called PR, and it's called show business.
By now you know Eurovision as unhinged, bright, queer, full of joy. Thing is, initially the 'insane', as functionaries called them, acts were sent as representatives specifically to lose. Then someone else saw it as a viable tactic, and someone else, and someone else, and, voila, what you know today as Eurovision. I repeat: the aim to NOT win made Eurovision into what it is now.
By being mad about your fav not winning, you are missing the point, one that, incidentally, your fav is not missing at all. The point: winning is not what matters or should matter, especially in this case (you should watch Ted Lasso, by the way). First place is not everything the best result for a performer that you love is losing the overall vote, but winning the audience vote. It's like all of the cake without any of the uuuh paying for the cake. You love the guy? Yes. You feel sad and indignant and will continue supporting the guy and listening to the new stuff? Yes. If anything, even more now, because you feel like he's been done dirty (nope). Is the guy being shamed at home? No, he's being sent love and hugs and gratitude. Do not cry for Finland. Finland will be graciously sending org volunteers to Sweden soon, because Sweden's volunteers are gon' get swamped and will cry on the floor hating everything.
The other point being, capitalism is unfair, yes, but events like that do not spring up in an open field via magic, and involve crazy money, time, and a huge amount of people working their asses off.
*puts on some Mahmood* mmmmmm runner-up.

Hi please know that this post got me images of IRL Gore.
Tumblr media
I am obviously not showing the asks here at ALL.
The fact i told you internet “““activists“““ to actually protest and help Palestinians by buying Charity, or maybe actually volunteering ended with me being told to blow my head off with images of dead children in my asks (including someone’s severed arm: with the lines “Do this you fucking zionist nobody wants you throw yourself off a fucking palace until you are nothing but mush“ <actual quote) is fucking insane.
I just wanna know: where were you guys in 2016 and 2014 when Israel attacked Palestine the same way they’re doing now? Why weren’t you boycotting the Eurovision and EBC for letting them compete in those years? Why aren’t you Boycotting for Armenia’s atrocities? Or even Russia’s Censorship and Dictatorship before 2022?
I know why.
Because it wasn’t POPULAR.
IT WASN’T COOL TO SUPPORT A COUNTRY.
YOU ARE ONLY DOING THIS BECAUSE:
It gives you cute little internet points <3
It gives you red hearts, it gives you a way to show yourself as a good person! <3
Yeah. THAT’S MY FUCKING STATEMENT.
now go call me out on tumblr.com or whatever i’m already here. Very pubblically.
