Athens neoclassical trinity: The national Library, University and Academy A greek Trilogy of neo-classical buildings for arts, science, knowledge and wisdom The architectural trilogy of Athens was designed by the danish architects the Hansen brothers. In the center is the University, flanked by the Library and the Academy, all facing Panepistimio avenue and Downtown modern Athens. The Vallianos building to the NW is the second of the trilogy designed by Baron Theophil von Hansen, foundation in 1887. It was he main building of the National Library of Greece from 1903 to 2018. Its collection has 4500 classic greek manuscripts, and a total of 570.000 titles. The Danish architect Christian Hansen, brother of Theophil, was the architect of the Central building of the University of Athens. It was finished in 1841. By the entrance stairs statues of hero of the War of Independence, Count loannis Kapodistrias, and a famous Hellenist, philosopher and participant in the French Revolution, Adamantios Korais (made in 1875 in marble, by Georgios Vroutos) is placed. The center propylae has a fresco with the former king Otto as god with the nine muse protectors, designed by Karl Rahl. The modern Academy of Athens building was finished 1889, after 30 years building. It is considered Theophil von Hansens main work and his first in the trilogy. Like the Library, the building process was executed by Ernst Ziller. Today, most of these buildings are supplanted by larger buildings elsewhere in Athens, but they still play minor roles for administrative and ceremonial purposes. And major roles as architectural and historic gems. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Library_of_Greece #culturalheritage #architecture #neoclassic #library #university #academy #academyofathens #universityofathens #nationallibrary (ved National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQtZLKZJ8i8/?utm_medium=tumblr
