Early 1730s dresses (from top to bottom) -
1730 Tea Party at Lord Harrington's by C. Phillips detail (Yale Center for British Art, Yale University - New Haven, Connecticut, USA). Probably from Wikimedia; fixed spots with Pshop 1247X1623. There are many caps and veils, square necklines, and laced bodices with revers. But full-blown panniers are not to be seen.
1730 Marquise de Gueydan as Flora by Nicolas de Largillière (Musée Granee - Aix-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France). From cutlermiles.com/portrait-of-marquise-de-gueydan-as-flora-nicolas-de-largilliere/ 1908X2484. She wears a stout Swiss belt and cleft coiffure that harken back to the late Louis XIV era.
ca. 1730 Empress Elisabeth Christine by Johann Gottfried Auerbach (auctioned, probably by Lempertz). From Wikimedia trimmed 1715X2352. She wears a round skirt and a scoop neckline.
ca. 1730 Polyxena of Hesse-Rotenburg, Queen of Sardinia by Maria Giovanna Clementi (location ?). From tumblr.com/blog/view/jeannepompadour; enlarged by half 1053X1385. Her dress has a deep V neckline filled in by a modesty piece.
ca. 1730 Rhoda Apreece, Mrs Francis Blake Delaval attributed to Enoch Seeman the Younger (Seaton Delaval - Seaton Sluice, Northumberland, UK). From artuk.org; enlarged by half 994X1200. The ruff makes this a Van Dyck revival dress. The laced vest and jaunty hat lend a casual air to the portrait.
ca. 1730 Robe volante (Musée de la Mode - Paris, France). From fripperiesandfobs.tumblr.com-post-139802377452-robe-volante-ca-1730-from-the-palais-galliera 1140X1620. Dresses before the 1750s often had cuffs that could be substantial like these.
1731 Die Liebeserklärung by Jean François de Troy (Sanssouci, Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin - Brandenburg, Germany). From artsandculture.google.com/asset/die-liebeserklärung-jean-françois-de-troy/XAFpCyLiWrxHZw?h 3074X24.12. Known in the Anglophone world as “The Declaration of Love. The large patterns mark this as early century. The robe à la française is firmly established in the form it would take until the late Louis XVI period.
1731 Infanta Maria Teresa Antonia de Borbón by Jean Ranc (Museo del Prado - Madrid, Spain). From their Web site; removed spots and streaks with Photoshop 2621X3051. Spain was ruled by Borbóns after the last Habsburg was cleared out in the early 1700s.
1731 Julia Calverley, Lady Trevelyan, by Enoch Seeman the Younger (Wallington Hall - Wallington, Northumberland, UK). From nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/584399; erased navigation marks in corners & fixed spots w Pshop 1616X1992. Clasps replace lacing to close this bodice.
1731 Lady by John Vanderbank (location ?). From the Philip Mould Historical Portraits Image Library 920X1214. The dress is Van Dyck revival similar to the one worn by Rhoda Apreece.

Against All Odds
Part 725
McCoy
It was good to be home. When David finally came in to join them for dinner, McCoy found himself looking his father over carefully. He knew Leah and Mother wouldn’t keep anything from him, but he wanted to be certain.
“Hello Leonard, Scotty,” David said as he took his seat after leaning down to kiss Eleanor quickly. Dr. Boyce had entered behind him and sat down with a welcoming nod to the boys. “I trust the flight was good?”
McCoy and Scotty both murmured answers and nodded. McCoy still hated flying, but somehow each time he did it, it was getting easier, especially when Scotty was with him.
“Everything is settled,” David said, looking over at Leah.
“Good.” Leah looked across at McCoy and Scotty. “Ms. Wallington and Ms. Gannon will be here for breakfast.”
“Who?” McCoy asked. He glanced at Scotty, who had the same questioning look on his face.
“The reporter and her technician,” Leah said, obviously trying not to roll her eyes. “Ms. Wallington wants to see you and all of us, and how we interact, before she sits down with you formally.
“Francine will arrive some time after breakfast. If I understand it correctly, Ms. Wallington wants to talk with you both before lunch,” Leah glanced at David, who nodded. “And then each of you separately after lunch.”
McCoy took a deep breath. A whole day. Scotty had gone a shade paler next to him. McCoy pushed his knee tighter to his fiancé’s, then slipped his foot around the inside of Scotty’s as well.
“The apologies from both girls went out this afternoon,” David said. “I haven’t seen how they were received yet.”
“It looked split,” Leah said. “But, it hadn’t made the evening news rounds yet.” She shrugged.
“Are you alright?” McCoy asked with concern as Scotty sat lightly on the bed. They had passed on doing anything with Leah after dinner. McCoy knew Scotty needed time to take in the idea of the reporter being with them all day.
Scotty nodded, but he still looked pale. McCoy moved to sit gently next to him.
“I’ve never done anything like this before either,” he offered. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a reporter here all day.”
Scotty nodded absently.
“You’ll be fine,” McCoy tried to reassure him. “I’ll be there and then your mom will be. We won’t let the reporter ask anything bad.”
“Ok Len.”
“Wanna look up the apologies?” McCoy asked. “Get mad about that?” He grinned wildly and was rewarded when Scotty gave a small laugh.
“I bet Jocelyn wasn't happy.”
“I hope so!” McCoy said with sudden vehemence.
He got up to unpack his PADD, and they both settled back on the bed. They watched the video of Denise first. The girl looked about to cry the entire time, but at least sounded sincere. Jocelyn’s eyes barely hid her contempt the whole time.
“They did those at school?”
McCoy nodded.
“They were setting up in the large dining hall when we left. Pike told me between classes earlier. He wanted to let me know to avoid that area.” He set the PADD on the bedside table.
“Don’t ye want to read—”
“No,” McCoy said with a shake of his head. “The truth is out there now, I don’t care what other people say.” He turned to face Scotty with a soft smile. “Besides, there are other more important things at the moment.”
“Oh?” Scotty said, raising an eyebrow as he caught McCoy’s meaning. “And what are those?”
“I suppose I could tell you,” McCoy said huskily, as he leaned towards Scotty, “but showing you would probably be more fun.”
McCoy was reluctant in the morning to leave the warm circle of Scotty’s arms in their bed. He knew they had to get up, knew they had to get done with the reporter, but all he wanted was to keep Scotty safe. Gently he brushed a hand across Scotty’s forehead, moving some hair back. He watched Scotty’s eyes flutter as he began to wake. His chest ached, wishing all their time could be that soft and caring and just them.
“Morning darlin’,” he whispered.
“Mmm, mo ghràdh.” Scotty pushed forward and kissed him.
McCoy melted and let out a sigh as he kissed him back.
“We could stay here,” he whispered. “Lock the door, keep everyone out.”
“Len,” Scotty gently chided.
“I know,” McCoy pouted. “Doesn’t mean I can’t wish.”
“The sooner we get it done, the sooner we can be back here,” Scotty said.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Part 726
Scotty
The night was just awful. After Leonard and he had enjoyed their togetherness, Scotty still didn’t manage to get a wink of sleep. Too many thoughts were racing through his head. Although he knew it was important that he remain calm, he still panicked about the day ahead. So many hours under observation... it was a terrifying thought. But somehow he had to get through it.
"Good morning, Your Highness, Mr. Scott."
They had barely entered the dining room when they were greeted by the royal family and two ladies they didn't know.
One was tall. She wore her long, black hair in a ponytail and her overall appearance seemed very well-groomed. The other was smaller and more compact, with light brown hair. She held a camera in her hand, but she was not yet pointing it at the boys. There was something mischievous in her eyes.
"Good morning," Leonard and Scotty replied as if from the same mouth. They were used to greeting people in unison from school.
"Boys, this is Ms. Wallington," David pointed to the taller lady, "and this is Ms. Gannon."
The little woman nodded graciously at the two.
"I hope it's all right that we've sort of invited ourselves to breakfast? I'd really like to get a sense of the interactions between the two of you," Wallington commented, and Scotty immediately felt the heat rush to his cheeks.
"Uhm... a-aye. Of course."
Leonard nodded as well.
The reporter eyed Scotty critically for a moment, raised an eyebrow.
"Are you all right, Mr. Scott?"
Scotty's eyes widened and he nodded quickly. He certainly didn't want anything to seem weird or forced.
"Aye! It's just... well... this thing with interviews and reporters is still new to me. And... some reporters have... behaved horribly."
He thought back to the reporters in Scotland who had harassed his mother and also Robbie. They were bad memories.
Immediately, Wallington's features softened.
"I can imagine it all too well. Please believe me when I say I'm doing my best to keep this all as pleasant as possible. Feel free to let me know if you have a problem with any question or situation."
Surprised, Scotty looked up from the floor. Wallington smiled gently at him, but her gaze was equally on Leonard.
"We will. Thank you, ma'am," the latter replied with a nod as he realized Scotty was obviously at a loss for words.
"Now then... let's have breakfast. It's going to be a long day."
David pointed to the already set table and everyone took a seat.
They talked about various things from school and class, during breakfast. Of course, Leonard's job shadowing day was also a topic. Dr. Boyce asked his young protégé some questions.
Scotty tried to ignore the reporter and the technician's camera, which had been turned on in the meantime.
It was unusual, but somehow he managed to talk to Eleanor about her progress in Gaelic and to participate in the other conversations as usual.
Almost involuntarily, he took Leonard's hand, which was on the table, when he told the others that he still had to repair his own ring because the light was broken.
"Your Highness, Mrs. Scott has arrived just now."
A servant’s voice interrupted the conversation and David quickly got to his feet.
"Oh please, send her in."
It wasn't long before Francine entered the room.
Scotty noticed out of the corner of his eye that Wallington and Gannon exchanged a puzzled look but said nothing.
Francine was greeted with a kiss on the hand by the gentlemen and hugged by Leah and Eleanor.
Leonard and Scotty followed last and were both embraced by Francine at the same time.
"A mhàthair," Scotty murmured and his fiancé also greeted the lady in a friendly manner.
"Hello, ye two. I arrived a wee bit early after all. I hope that's not a problem."
Francine looked questioningly at David, who quickly shook his head.
"Not at all. Everything is just fine. Francine, this is Ms. Wallington and Ms. Gannon from the press. Ladies, this is Mrs. Scott, Scotty's mother."
"I... would like her to be present for my interview," Scotty quickly spoke up and the press ladies nodded in understanding.
"Good morning, Mrs. Scott."
Francine joined the group and they finished breakfast.
Scotty began to feel queasy. Shortly, the first interview with Leonard and him would start.

I wrote recently about Newcastle's Old Assembly Rooms. William Newton, a lesser-known Newcastle architect, was born in London in 1735 and died in 1790. As architect, he built the Old Assembly Rooms. Newton's late-18th-century neoclassical civic, residential, and religious buildings were famous. Newton moved to Newcastle upon Tyne in 1776 after studying architecture with Sir William Chambers. His Old Assembly Rooms on Fenkle Street in Newcastle were famous. The Old Assembly Rooms, built between 1776 and 1778 for the town's elite, hosted dances, concerts, and plays. The building's neoclassical facade has six Ionic columns supporting a central pediment made of local sandstone. Newton designed the Old Assembly Rooms, Theatre Royal, Custom House, and Mansion House in Newcastle upon Tyne. He built Wallington Hall and Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland.
