airsLLide No. 3528: C-GKCP, Boeing 737-217 Adv., Canadian Airlines, Toronto-Pearson, August 30, 1989.
In the late 1980s, Canadian Airlines grew into Canada's second largest airline, literally as the result of a shopping frenzy. CP Air had started the move towards concentration by acquiring regional carriers EPA Eastern Provincial Airlines and Nordair in 1986/87, before being acquired itself by Pacific Western Airlines of Calgary.
Following this acquisition, the airline was rebranded as Canadian Airlines, using a stylized "Canadi<n" lettering to avoid any discussions about giving priority to either the English or French language. This was a wise move considering the fact that in 1986 Quebecair had been drawn into the merging game as well, when it was acquired by Pacific Western's parent PWA Corp. and became the basis on which feeder subsidiary Inter-Canadi<n was formed.
Last but not least, in fall 1989, also Wardair would be acquired by Canadian Airlines, thereby creating a situation with Air Canada and Canadian Airlines dominating the Canadian market by their sheer sizes.
Since the various mergers leading to the formation of Canadian Airlines followed in such short intervalls, the newly formed joint fleet operated in a whole array of interim and hybrid color schemes for the following few years. C-GKCP is one of at least three Boeing 737s still sporting CP Air's iconic 1970s livery in the summer of 1989, two years after the merger took place, and even the blanked-out CP Air tiltes can still be made out underneath the cockpit windows.

Resurrected two disused Logos
Resurrected two disused Logos
I resurrected two disused classic logos, in honour of my Dad and Aunt, who both have birthdays coming up this fall. My Dad was a #FireFighter for #TheCityOfToronto and took early retirement in 1998 when the city under went amalgamation. While my Aunt was a #FlightAttendant for #WardAir prior to it’s take over by Canadian Air in 1986 (who she continued to work for till her retirement. So I’ve…

Curling Jacket Patch
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories 1950's
This two-felt, machine-embroidered sporting patch is a souvenir of the Giant Curling Club, formed in 1947 by employees of the Giant Gold Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Giant Mine was the largest gold mine in the area and one of the top gold producers in Canada until its closure in 1999. It employed over 350 people at its height and established a close-knit community for the staff and their families with a complement of well-organized recreation facilities and programs sponsored by the mining company.
Curling was one of the most popular pastimes in northern communities for men and women during the long cold winters. Giant Mine’s curling club facility, a two-sheet ice surface with a clubroom, was the scene of many parties as the miners and their families battled it out for top spot on the rink. Bonspiels, sponsored by the airline Wardair, were held every winter in Yellowknife. Each community, town, or mining camp had a curling club and the club’s patch was a symbol of pride, worn on sweaters to signify membership. This patch was collected by a curling enthusiast who lived in Yellowknife in the 1950s.

airsLLide No. 3501: C-FWDX, Airbus A310-304, Wardair Canada, Toronto, August 30, 1989.
Canadian leisure carrier Wardair dared to challenge both Air Canada and Canadian Airlines when it entered into the business of domestic scheduled flights between Canada's major cities. Twelve A310 were acquired fresh from the factory, but the effort didn't go too well: In 1990 already, Canadian Airlines bought the struggling newcomer and quickly eliminated the excess capacity it had created with its twelve A310s. C-FWDX was sold to the Canadian Armed Forces where it was converted to a CC-150 "Polaris" tanker/transport.
