Johnny Test: Power Up! - Villains

Hey, starlets! After expanding the spinoff idea with the main characters and introducing the side characters, it's time to introduce the other side of the spectrum, also known as: THE VILLAINS!

Although many having different motives from something silly to outright sinister. And similar to some supervillain groups, the villains will be in rotation, in order to spice things up and cause trouble for our heroes.

Let's start things off with the list of the bad guys and gals with:

The returning villains!

Dark Vegan will be a combination between the original and the revival. Even though he may be the destroyer of planets in some galaxies, in the galaxy, where Lumina is, he's seen as a total joke in comparison to some, since there are even more dangerous threats out there. It didn't help, that his family, including his daughter Jillian, who also got teleported to Lumina, are slowly adapting to the planet and even making new friends. He blamed this on Johnny, even though he and the bad guys can't remember a particular incident, when they got teleported there. (In fact, in the beginning, NONE of the returning characters, who are involved in that incident, not even Johnny, Dukey and the twins, remember that incident) So of course, he would try to destroy him, but considering that he has a very aggressive snail, who wouldn't go down without a fight, a fairy, who would blast him with her spells and robot, who has better technology than him, it's gonna be difficult, unless he had to adapt himself with Luminian technology. (In which SPOILER ALERT: He would do that)

Brain Freezer would be a mix between the original and the revival. (In fact, most of them are like hybrids of the two versions, with some new things added). His design will be left slightly unchanged. Since he decided to learn about Luminian technology and combined it with his own, he became a slightly bigger threat. But only by a fraction. However, there is something, that has been troubling his mind. Like remember the episode, where Johnny helped him out? Well, initially he became reformed, but for some unknown reason, he became evil again. I have a theory, that could potentially be explored in this spinoff. However, he decided to keep it as secret, even to his brethren and even to Johnny. Like most of the returning bad guys, he would bounce between a campy rival to Johnny to a villain. That depends on the whatever situation. Another thing is, he would become best friends with Zizrar, due to having similar experiences. In fact, I could imagine them in some funny antics, but in the end, despite the differences, their friendship would remain strong. (I was inspired by @rominadrawsart15 and her version of Brain Freezer. She does an amazing job of expanding him.)

Mr. Mittens would be left slightly unchanged to the original and revival versions, but of course combined into one. One new thing to add, is because there are anthropomorphic cats in Lumina, he would try to recruit them. Some of them refuse (in fact, those who refused, would become allies to Johnny and the others, much to Dukey's annoyance. But Schalot's too excited, because that dude is a cat enthusiast.) However, some cats, who are down on their luck would accept his help, because they had no other option. Anyways, much like Dark Vegan, he would be compared as a total joke, since once again, there are more menacing threats out there, with one of them being a very muscular panther, who's the boss of an evil organisation. Much like the returning bad guys, he would bounce between rival and enemy, depending on the situation. The scar would remain from the revival, along with him being a bit fluffier.

Albert would basically left unchanged, other than the fact, that he would basically be a combo between original and revival. His outfit would be slightly enhanced to make it look a bit more regal. There's not much to say about him, since I don't know much about him. The only new addition, I could give him, is perhaps his interactions towards the new characters. Like he would act like a grandpa towards Serena sometimes for example. (If you have anything to add about Albert, comment down below.)

Zizrar would remain unchanged, but because he was teleported to an unknown galaxy, along with his mole people, who are all MALE, they had to fend off for their survival, while also learning about the new universe. After reuniting with Brain Freezer and his pals, he would slowly adapt to and much like him, Zizrar would bounce between playful rival to a silly threat. Even Schalot would be really annoyed by his loud and flamboyant personality, but that's due to him having a different personality. One new thing to add, is he and his people would encounter a different encounter of mole people, who they're all female. The difference is, the girls are strong warriors with a strong sense for justice. However, they don't see Zizrar and his men as threats, but rather as tiny, yet annoying nuisances. It will develop throughout the series. Anyway, he would also became best friends with Brain Freezer, due to them sharing similar experiences. However, much like Brain Freezer, he would also have an inner conflict, regarding of his relation to Johnny and the others, because of the past.

By the way, after looking back at the original series, a bit of discussion and some reconsideration, I decided not to bring Whacko and the Tickler back for various reasons:

They're problematic. Given with their goals, if they're brought back nowadays, it wouldn't take long till the internet would go insane. Especially politics (which personally, I try to avoid).

They're not well known and loved. It's understandable, since the original did made them really repetitive and annoying. Which is a bit of a shame, since if Whacko comes back, with some changes, he would be a legitimate villain.

But alas, some things have to be sacrificed for a better quality and experience.

With my thoughts out of the way, it's time to introduce:

The new villains!

Mind you, the most of the new villains would be one off ones ranging from a robot clown, an alien tycoon, a group of thugs to powerful conquerors. Some of them would help out the bad guys from Porkbelly and some of them would do things on their own. Heck, at one point, evil versions of the main characters or even one or multiple corrupted main characters would be the focus on some situations. However, one of the stands out from the rest with the biggest potential to be the biggest threat of our heroes and the entire universe:

Vipra (VA: Kathleen Barr) is known as the "Empress of Evil" and she lives up for her role, due to her ruthless, cunning and menacing demeanor. Her design can he described as a tall alien woman with red snake eyes, a black bodysuit, some silver armor, a braided hairstyle, that resembles snakes, sharp fangs, killer boots, a slick, sharp tail and silver stiletto nails. Inspired by Trakeena, Astronema (minus the redemption arc) and Queen Chrysalis, her personality can be described as a mysterious, cold, intelligent, yet sinister and a bit sadistic. She is the leader of a very big army of monsters and giant creatures, bent for intergalactic conquest and bringing pain and despair to every single galaxy, she invades. Unlike most of the villains, she will always remain in the shadows, watching everything unfold and manipulate small things, until the perfect moment would arrive to strike big time.

Terios (VA: Mark Acheson) is Vipra's second in command, who's specialised in hand to hand combat, along with mastery in weapons. He is described as a dark knight with his own code of honour, meaning that he can't finish off someone weaker than him and instead waited for them to get stronger or even find someone, who's worthy for the real fight. As for his design, he would have a dark silver armor with green accents, a tall yet strong build, glowing green eyes, scales around his body, gradient horns with the tips being darker, that are placed on his head and back and his face being obscured by a metal mask. Despite being on the side of evil, he is very loyal to Vipra and would do anything to protect her.

Kit (VA: Brenda M Crichlow) is Vipra's general and is a cosmic black alien with multiple tails, like a kitsune fox, a red gem on her ear and feline-like yellow eyes. She is known as the smartest being in the universe and would develop strategies for Vipra and her army to defeat the heroes and conquer galaxies. She is also known for also being a powerful mage with dangerous spells in her arsenal.

There will also a few people in Vipra's army, aside from her henchmen, like a pair of brothers, named Bink (VA: Ian Hantlin) and Bonker (VA: Peter New), who will be the comic relief duo and the ones, scouting on missions and such. Unlike Vipra and the others, they're more bumbling morons.

And that's all the returning and new villains for the spinoff project. Of course, some concepts will change in the future to be more refined and fit to the series, while also bringing new stuff with them. With the characters out of the way, the next post about this spinoff project will be about world building and infos about the galaxy, Lumina's currently in.

pressurized (part two.)

Catra/Adora | (part one.)

“Today just keeps getting better.”

“Hang on, I saw a flashlight,” Adora mumbles in the dark.

She scoots along the edge of her seat and feels around for the excursion kit she first opened. It takes a while, but she eventually manages to fumble it open and seek out the familiar shape of a flashlight. Adora flicks the switch and the beam shines directly at Catra, who hisses and flings an arm across her eyes.

“Whoops! Didn’t see you there. Obviously.”

“Okay. Adora, get up.” “Uh, why?”

“You’re sitting on something I need, just switch with me.”

Adora complies, pivoting over to sit on the other crate while Catra drops to her knees in front of the box with the parachutey thing. She leans forward to watch, holding the flashlight with the beam pointing upward. The cockpit is so small that this narrow beam alone does a half-decent job at dimly illuminating the area.

Catra gives her a dry look. “You gonna point that over here and help or are you gonna tell me the story of the Weeping Princess?”

There’s couple seconds of confusion before Adora realizes what she means. The beam from below must be lighting her the way Lonnie held a flashlight beneath her chin when she told ghost stories at night.

She points the flashlight to the crate and suggests with a snort, “I have lots of new princess stories you’ve never even heard of. They’re super different from the ones we had. A nice, non-spooky variety.”

Catra opens the crate with a disinterested hum.

“There’s this one I just can’t get out of my head... It takes place way before the Princess Alliance was formed, when the realms were still establishing themselves. These two neighboring princesses, Melodiance and Lumina, were at war over—”

“Adora, this is so fucking boring.”

“No, shh, you’ll like this one—”

“Does a princess die?”

“Actually, yeah.”

“Okay, fine. Go.”

“Ugh, you made me ruin the ending!”

“Tragic.”

“It is! Basically, the two princesses meet for the first time on the battlefield. Melodiance stabbed her enemy and secured the victory, but…”

The word ‘stabbed’ actually gets Catra to look up from what she’s doing and pay attention. Adora makes sure to put a little extra ‘oomph’ in her retelling, going out of her way for dramatic pauses in all the right places.

“The moment Lumina collapsed into her arms, Melodiance said she saw a kindred spirit—another brave kid, proud and driven for glory. But Melodiance was so absorbed in proving herself that she realized it one crucial moment too late. She never married and spent the rest of her life writing about Lumina. Even though her reign was hundreds of years ago, her realm today is still packed with more monuments and memorials to Princess Lumina than to anyone who actually ruled.”

Catra laughs quietly, a little huff of breath through her nose. “You think I’d put up a statue of you?”

“That was not the point of the story.”

“It’s the point you ended on. A statue’s a little much, but I guess I could be generous when I tell your story for the princess books.”

Adora rolls her eyes, an action that surprisingly ticks Catra off during a moment Adora’s been assuming to be playful.

She prickles, ears pointing back. “What, you don’t think I could be a kind ruler?”

Adora has an answer she’s pretty sure Catra doesn’t want to hear. A long silence stretches between them.

It ends with Catra clicking her tongue. “I could be as fair as any princess alliance.”

“Then act like it.”

Catra gives her a look that’s disturbingly familiar and triggers some kind of flight-or-fight response at the back of Adora’s mind. It’s the look that suggests she understands something Adora doesn’t.

Whatever it is she knows, she keeps to herself. All Catra says in return is, “Hey, they killed their own kind on the battlefield.”

“That was not the point of the story.” Adora’s gaze floats down to what Catra’s taking out of the crate and she raises an eyebrow. “What’s that for?”

“This,” she unzips the front of the hazmat suit, “is the only way out of here.”

It looks sort of like a old space suit. Or sort of like something that belonged an old deep sea diver. Knowing Entrapta, she may have cobbled it together from a frankenstein mix of both things and any number of other things Adora wouldn’t even identify.

“I don’t get it.”

“It’s the only thing in here that can handle a little tar.” Catra shuts the crate’s lid again and drapes the suit over it. She tucks the helmet under one arm.

A chill drops like an ice cube running down Adora’s spine. “There’s only one.”

Catra looks her dead in the eye. “Yeah.”

She swallows hard, the inside of her throat suddenly feeling full of cotton. A spike of panic rises behind her ribcage, followed by a sharp drop of regret. After all they’ve been through, they’re going to kill each other over a fucking suit? Adora’s adrenaline pulses, preparing for another fight like the one when she first jumped in this tank. One with no interruption this time.

Then Catra adds, simple and sharp, “So, get in.”

The complete certainty in her stare shakes Adora to her core. “What…?”

“Put the suit on, stupid.”

“But,” Adora looks at the hatch, then up at the black windshield. “If one of us tries to open that hatch, the tank fills with tar, stupid.”

“You said you could push through it as She-Ra.”

“I mean, probably. Still, you can’t survive long enough for me—or, I guess, the Horde—to come back.”

Catra narrows her eyes. “Yeah, no duh. And how long can we keep re-breathing the same air in here before we both pass out and die? We’re not in a bunker. There’s a real short time limit to how long we can stay here.”

Adora hadn’t thought of that. They need to conserve air. She’s conscious of every breath, suddenly. She tries to hold her next inhale in just a few seconds longer before letting it out in a measured exhale. She can’t concentrate on this enough to keep it up while her mind scrambles for a quick fix. The flashlight’s beam roves wildly around the dark cockpit.

It does a double take over the compressor tank that caused the nasty bruise on her forehead. “There’s the huge air tank! Set it up and we’ll take turns breathing.”

Catra barely reacts to the revelation. “That’s not oxygen.”

“What?”

“This,” Catra shakes the suit’s sleeve to demonstrate, “is a HAB suit.”

“Um, what’s—”

“High-altitude balloon. Entrapta sends ‘em up for some kind of research. That’s the helium tank.”

Adora shakes her head. “Okay—Doesn’t matter.” She must look like Light Hope when she’s stuck on a loop, because she can’t seem to stop shaking her head. “No. I’m not—I’m not gonna—I can’t just—”

Catra lets out a long exhale that sounds a lot like a prayer for patience.

“You got my permission this time. You can go, for the sake of saving the world, or whatever.” The way she says it is stilted, each word painfully and reluctantly plucked out of her.

“If you cared so much about saving the world, why haven’t you been on my side?” Adora’s voice rises, not even trying to downplay her distress anymore.

“I don’t, okay! I don’t care. People suck and the world’s still gonna suck whether the Horde or the Princesses are in charge.” Catra’s arms cross over her chest. “Only reason I got so invested was to make a point. A point that becomes worthless if you die in a tank at the bottom of a tar pit.”

“You said your plan was to kill me.”

“Not like this.”

“More like…” Adora’s fingers reach out to brush their knuckles against Catra’s hand. “Melodiance?”

“Shut up.”

Beneath the grazing touch, Adora feels her hand unclench its grip around her own bicep. She takes the opportunity to slip her fingers underneath Catra’s. Catra lets Adora gently pull her hand away to hold it against her chest.

“Let me be the hero I’m supposed to be and you put the suit on,” Adora whispers, pleading.

Catra’s mouth twists and her brows furrow. “Yeah, and what about your big mission? Saving the princesses?”

“It doesn’t have to be me.” She clutches Catra’s palm between two trembling hands. “If I’m not there for you to go against, what will stop you from making the right choices?”

“Oh, Adora. You always think the world revolves around you.” Catra’s hand comes up to hook around Adora’s neck and slowly shift up the back of her head. “But you are, unfortunately, the one literally destined to save the princesses.”

“But you—Why are you doing this now?”

“The world’s bigger than the two of us. I can’t be the only person you look out for.”

Having her own words thrown back in her face like this cracks Adora’s resolve. The levee breaks and the tears well up. It’s a cruel wonder for this to be the time and place Catra takes her words to heart.

Catra goes on, “I already told you I don’t actually care what happens to the stupid princesses. I don’t even really care what happens to the Horde anymore. Maybe I want Hordak to eat shit.”

Adora nearly asks, What do you care about, then?

On second thought, the answer is obvious.

Catra’s fingers wind around Adora’s ponytail and use it to pull her forward. Their foreheads touch. Their eyes lock.There’s something secret, something heart-vexing, in Catra’s gaze. Adora hasn’t seen this look since they separated. They haven’t held each other in so long. They stay like this for a while, close enough that their eyelashes brush against the sides of each other’s noses. Bow calls that butterfly kisses.

Catra’s right, Adora realizes in a terrible lightning strike of self-honesty. She can’t do this to Bow. She can’t do this Glimmer. There are so many people counting on her to fix everything. People she cares about more than anything in the world. Yesterday, she was training to kill Catra.

Adora doesn’t need to speak it. Catra seems to have understood it long before she did. Catra’s the first to pull away from the embrace. She gets Adora to step into the suit. Helps her put it on. Zips her up, pulls her gloves on, hands her the helmet.

Blue eyes, still rimmed with shimmering tears that refuse to spill, stare down at it. “I can’t do this.”

Catra takes her face in both hands.

“Hey.” She forces Adora’s chin up. “Yeah, you will. You’ll be fine.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No. You’re not, really.” Catra holds her face still for the kiss she presses to her lips.

Adora makes a soft, wounded noise in the back of her throat.

“Okay,” Catra pulls away, panting—Almost sniffling? “C’mon, it’s time. Put that on.”

“Wait.”

“You can’t keep waiting.” Catra takes the helmet from Adora and attempts to put it on herself.

Adora bats it away. “Seriously, stop!”

The abrupt shout alarms Catra enough for her to actually pull back.

Gloved hands fumble with the suit, fighting to tear it off. “Take this—Get this off me—”

Catra stands still. “What is it?”

“The balloon! We have a giant balloon.” Adora’s out of breath, struggling to peel the gloves off without any help.

“Okay?”

“We—listen—We tape the bottom of the balloon around the hatch—and we fill the cockpit up with helium—”

“The balloon’s not big enough to float an entire war tank out of a tar pit.”

Adora grabs Catra by the arms. “It’ll make a little tunnel through the tar for us. We just need to hold our breath and crawl along the bottom.”

“That… Huh.” She watches hope dawn on Catra’s previously resigned expression. It’s beautiful. “We can do that.”

Catra swings around and flings open the HAB crate. Adora takes a minute to get out of the rest of the suit before bolting to the excursion kit and snatching the roll of black tape.

“Can’t believe I didn’t think of this,” Catra mutters to herself as they tape down the rim of the balloon all around the hatch door.

Adora snorts. “Yeah, ‘cause it was, like, so obvious.”

Together, they heave the helium tank beneath the balloon. Catra takes a deep breath and plugs her nose while Adora twists the handle to open up the flow all the way. The gas spills out with a loud hiss. Next, she drags the discarded HAB suit over to her and reaches inside for the gas mask. Adora holds the mouthpiece up to her face and—”Ouch!”

She cringes at the flare of pain when it touches against the gash across her nose. Holding it in front of her more gingerly this time, she takes a deep inhale. Exhales. Inhales, and holds it. She beckons Catra over and passes her the mask. Catra does the same. Inhales, exhales. Inhales, holds it, and passes the mask to Adora.

While Adora breathes, Catra crawls back beneath the balloon. It’s like disappearing behind a curtain. Adora hears the latch click. Catra grunts and metal creaks. In the next instant, the balloon is seemingly sucked up and out of the tank’s open hatch. Catra stands at the door, blinking in astonishment.

“Can’t believe that worked,” she says, but in the voice of a chipmunk.

Adora laughs, but the sound also comes out like a high pitched series of squeaks. It makes Catra laugh, just as high pitched, and now they’re stuck in a terrible feedback loop. Perhaps a little intoxicated with hope, they both share one last breath on the mask before they suffocate on helium. Adora, still in a giggle fit, struggles to hold that breath in.

Catra crawls out first, flashlight in hand. Adora follows, leaving the helium tank spilling behind them. Crawling inside the balloon isn’t at all like the fun play-tunnel experience she imagined. It’s more like being inside a water-wiggler toy. It’s squishy and warm on all sides, sort of collapsing around her. Feels gross, actually. Doesn’t smell awesome either.

Adora drags herself forward on her elbows, following the circle of light dancing ahead of her and the occasionally swish of Catra’s tail across her face. She can’t tell direction which direction they’re going in the pitch black balloon. Adora hopes they’re crawling along the floor of the pit and not like… up vertically, or else at the end of this they will find themselves still stuck in the middle of the tar pit.

The balloon seems to collapse more heavily around them the further they push forward. She hears Catra grunting as she tries to squeeze through the crushing pressure of tar all around her. Adora can’t even help push her, she’s stuck trying to wriggle herself forward. The water-wiggler experience turned into something more like seriously tight-space spelunking.

Out on the surface, the tar pit bubbles, seemingly undisturbed. A particularly large bubble rises up along the shoreline, then pops. A sword bursts through one side, a clawed hand on the other. Adora and Catra haul themselves out from the end of balloon, sweating and heaving.

They drag themselves a couple feet out over the soil and collapse at the edge of the Whispering Woods. Adora rolls onto her back, catching her breath. Daylight is painfully bright after the past hour or so of darkness, but she forces her eyes to stare up at the blue sky and white clouds. In a moment of bliss, her hand finds Catra’s and squeezes it.

“There you are!”

They both jolt upright at the shout from within the trees. Oh, no.

Branches rustle and a familiar face barrels out of the bushes. Scorpia runs at them with so much concentrated force that Adora reflexively braces herself for a tackle, fully expecting to be slammed to the dirt. That’s not what happens.

Instead, she swoops Catra off the ground and spins her around, hugging tight. “Iwasfreakingout, youhavenoidea!”

“Agh!” Catra tries to squirm out of the hug, but Scorpia seems way too adept at the art of hanging on.

“I followed your tracker and the location was in the middle of the Torpid Tar Pit!” She does set Catra back down, but only so she can use her free hand to point at Adora. “I thought this one threw you in!”

“She sorta did.”

“You wear a tracker?” Adora laughs. “What’s next, a collar?”

“Shut up, Adora.”

“Yeah, Adora,” Scorpia helpfully supplies. “The Horde search team I called will be here any minute now.”

Adora doesn’t wait for Catra’s permission to go this time. She hisses, “Fuck,” beneath her breath and darts into the trees without looking back. Scorpia lunges after her, but Catra’s arm across her chest stops her.

“She’s getting away. Again.”

“Just leave it. Don’t tell anyone she was here.”

“But—” She starts, then falters.

“Scorpia. I need you not to tell anyone she got away, so that I won’t have trouble.”

She’s already nodding before Catra finishes the sentence. “Well, yeah.”

“Cool.” Catra turns her face to stare at a nearby thornbush.

Scorpia’s been pretty good at keeping her mouth shut about momentary lapses in judgment when it comes to Adora. She’s lucky for that.

“Oh, wildcat,” Scorpia sighs, “you keep falling into the same old velvet ditches left and right.”

Catra’s sharp eyes snap to her. “Velvet what did you say?”

“A velvet ditch,” she repeats. “You know, a low place you fall into and don’t try to climb out of. Because you’re so comfortable there. It’s what my mom calls the Fright Zone.”

“I don’t fall into anything—Why’d you say ditches? Like I have more than one?”

“I think you do. But that’s okay. I’ll lend you a hand when you’re ready to climb out again. And I’ll help wash that tar off your arms.” With a spark of excitement in her eyes she adds, “It’ll probably take a while.”

Another thing Catra’s lucky for, is that Scorpia tells her the truth.

Director’s Cut: Part III (Finale)

OK. When I started writing this Director’s Cut, I figured it would be an easy couple-thousand-word post. My plan was to rapidly look back at the past six months of Destiny 2 and layout a simple outline of where we want to go this Fall. I think I still did that, but I ended up wanting to talk more about the “why”, the team, and share how we are thinking about Destiny. I remember following games when I was younger and being excited to dig into the messages the developers put together, like Tigole’s posts on raids and dungeons back in my WoW days.

And I loved it. And I loved reading those posts.

Maybe this was all a love letter to long-form communication—a relic from a time before it was all hot takes, 140/280-character posts, and upvotes.

I didn’t think this would add up to something longer than almost every paper I wrote in college. But here we are.

Before we get to today’s programming, I want to circle back on reloader mods and also about mods more generally in Armor this fall, in case you missed my Twitter thoughts.

These general mods--which provide the exact same effect as Hand Cannon reloader (but also affects other small arms weapons)--cost 4-5 energy (depending on the mod) and do not have an elemental affinity associated with them.

These general mods -- of which there are 11 -- are unlocked for everyone automatically, so you can start to tinker right away.

Basically, when you want to specialize your weapon, it requires matching your armor's energy type.

And then you get an energy discount on socketing the mod.

Thanks for the questions on this.

Let’s finish this series by looking at combat—where the action game and RPG collide—and begin the conversation about the “single evolving world” portion of our vision. (We’ll have more on the evolving world later this month after the feeling has returned to my fingers.)

COMBAT: THE INEVITABLE COLLISION OF ACTION AND RPG

We want the game to be an awesome power fantasy where challenge can push back on its players. As we discussed in Part I, the game started to bend in Year 2 under the weight of this Power and Destiny’s imperative that it ride the line between action game and RPG. This section is going to explore that collision across a variety of places: the UI, the player character, and of course PvP.

Part I: Damage Numbers and the 999,999 Problem

Destiny 2 was built with very different goals in mind than was the much-improved version of the game we’re playing today. Some parts simply weren’t meant to last for several years. One of those parts is the displayed-damage values relative to the player’s Power level.

This problem most clearly manifests to players as the frequency of “999,999” showing up in your HUD. As the post-Forsaken year continued, the curve that dictates the value of displayed damage sharpens into a hockey stick. The display values for Shadowkeep rocket off the graph and become almost vertical!

This inflation for damage is getting retooled this Fall. It will look like a UI numbers squish, but more crucially, behind the scenes we’re setting up the damage-display system to last. It’s important that you understand we are not nerfing your outgoing damage; rather, we’re refactoring the displayed number game wide.

We’ve also had something that, over the years, the team has come to call “The Immunity Wall.” This is a value where players cannot damage AI. In the game today, if you’re 50 Power below an enemy and you shoot it, you deal a big ol’ donut. Another change we’ve made for fall is that we’ve lowered (raised?) the immunity wall to 100. This means you can now deal damage to enemies you are up to 100 Power below. The at-Power (you and an enemy are the same Power) experience isn’t changing. This isn’t a nerf. This is a way for folks to take on greater challenges by fighting further below the Power curve.

Part II: Buffs, Debuffs, and Stacking Rules

You know it, I know it, and Gladd knows it: The way damage stacking works in the game right now is busted. Multiplicative damage combines with the exponential damage inflation above to send damage numbers to soaring heights of “we cannot continue this way.”

We’ve taken all the weapon damage buffs (these enhance the player’s outgoing damage) that can appear on the character and stack-ranked their damage effects (these are effects like Empowering Rift, Well of Radiance, Lumina’s buff, and top-tree Void Titan’s Weapons of Light). We’ve also overhauled the system under the hood, so the damage calculations use only the most powerful buff on a player at a given time. It’s got nuance to it, though: If you’re under the damage effect of something stronger than Well of Radiance, you will still receive the healing effect from the Well, but the damage bonus would come from the other buff (e.g., Lumina or Weapons of Light).

We’ve made some changes to debuffs as well (a debuff is an effect that weakens the enemy). We’ve touched the effects and durations of a number of them. These effects include Hammer Strike, Shattering Strike, Tractor Cannon, and Shadowshot (Shadowshot will now work on powerful weapons as well).

In general, only one ability buff can be active on a player at a given time, and enemies can be affected by only one debuff at a time. There are notable exceptions in the form of Exotics and weapon amplification perks (Kill Clip, Rampage, et cetera). The Exotics and weapon amplification perks will remain multiplicative increases to damage above the ability buff values.

Here’s a simple version: Buffs that apply to a single weapon (Rampage, Kill Clip, Exotics) can still stack. But buffs that affect all your weapons no longer stack. The most powerful of those buffs will be applied to your damage. I’m sure someone is gonna make a video that shows this in action on October 1st.

Part III: Supers Everywhere

Masterworked guns. Super mods. Orbs everywhere.

Right now, for a pretty decent player running Super mods, the time it takes to gain a Super is under two minutes in PvP. If you compare the duration and damage of roaming Supers in Destiny 2 to roaming Supers in Destiny 1, you’ll see they’re more powerful now than ever before. We didn’t even have roaming Arc Titans in Destiny 1, but every time I play PvP, I get killed by one twice in the same Super. Similar to the way that deep down, we all know the damage-dealing capabilities of Guardians has gotten out of control, we know the Supers have too. Destiny 2 was overly restrictive at launch, but now the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. We’ll start bringing this back toward center in Shadowkeep.

On a livestream a couple months ago, I mentioned that we’re lowering roaming Super damage resistance. And we are. Seeing someone pop a Super should not instinctively make us want to run away, give up, or float off the map. We want Super kills to feel earned, and we want players on the business end of a Super to feel like they can make a big play and put down that Striker Titan. Being able to challenge someone in their Super is important, and right now, many of the Supers are very, very hard to challenge.

On top of that, more things than ever now contribute to players getting their Supers back, so we’re doing some tuning there as well. Supers will be just as powerful, but they will be a more strategic choice. As such, we’re reducing the effectiveness of orbs on refilling the Super meter and reducing the Super energy gained from kills and assists.

This isn’t just a PvP problem. Remember that series on the Reckoning in Part I? It’s all related. Supers are still very, very powerful in the PvE game—players will just need to be slightly more specific with their timing and positioning than in the past. This kind of tuning is a pendulum: We’ve swung it hard in different directions, and we’re all hopeful that these changes will begin to find a better middle ground for Destiny 2.

Part IV: Heavy Ammo Available

In Destiny 1, Heavy ammo became an in-match rally point in 6v6 matches. Once opened, players nearby would all get some Heavy ammo. In Destiny 2, Heavy ammo is a jockey-for-position speed-before-need looting game that gets played all the time. In Destiny 1, Heavy ammo felt metered, and in Destiny 2 you can defeat a team (but not an Arc Titan) multiple times with a brick for a Hammerhead.

See where is this heading?

We’re making some changes to Heavy ammo in Destiny 2: Heavy ammo will be communal in 6v6 playlists. We’re also reducing the amount of ammo per brick in PvP for certain 6v6 archetypes. It’s not exactly the same as D1 though—when a player cracks open the Heavy crate, other players have a window of time to interact with it to get their Heavy ammo.

Part V: Let’s Talk About PvP

There has been a lot of conversation (internally and externally!) at different points during the year around the support Bungie provides PvP. On one hand, we have continued to tune the game each quarter, added pinnacle PvP weapons (that somehow ended up as pinnacle PvE weapons), tried out a ranking system in the Crucible, and returned the game to its 6v6 roots. On the other hand: We haven’t released a new permanent game mode, many game modes from Destiny 1 are nowhere to be seen, there isn’t a public-facing PvP team, and the last real thing we said was Trials is staying on hiatus indefinitely.

Let’s get some of this sorted out.

Trials of the Nine wasn’t the hero we wanted it to be. We made too many changes to a formula that—while it had begun to decline in Destiny 1—wasn’t as flawed as we thought. When we were making Destiny 2, we talked a lot about making sure it felt like a sequel, bringing in new players, and simplifying the game—and Trials of the Nine created another casualty there. It happened on my watch, and if I could turn back time, I’d challenge us to do many things differently. If nothing else, I hope it’s clear we are committed to learning from the mistakes we make and making it right.

There were some really cool parts to the Emissary. Some of the gear was pretty potent (Sup, Darkest Before), but the theme felt weaker, the Trials card was less important, and the stakes felt lower. Trials of the Nine didn’t work the way we’d hoped, and Trials of the Nine is on hiatus indefinitely.

So why have we been so quiet about PvP? Well, we didn’t have a lot to say. We weren’t actively developing something to hype up. We knew PvP was going to be something everyone got for free in New Light, so it wasn’t really a part of the Shadowkeep core offering. What are we doing about PvP became a question we were asked internally, too. A bunch of folks on our team are passionate about PvP and wanted to know where it was heading.

PvP is in need of some quality-of-life improvements and restructuring. This Fall, with New Light (hopefully) bringing a bunch of new folks into Destiny and with our existing players looking for some updates to PvP, we will start by making significant changes to the PvP portion of the Director.

Today, it’s a fine balance between adding playlists and maintaining healthy populations when we’re looking at changes to playlist structures. We want to achieve a couple of goals: First, we want players to have some more agency with respect to “pick a playlist, play a mode.” And second, we want the playlists to drift back to the “everything is a factor of 3” that Destiny 1 used (and that the rest of the game mostly uses).

Player counts being based on a common number (like 3) is important. It enables a bunch of activity options for groups of friends to engage with. In Destiny 1, players could run a couple strike groups, team up for a raid, go play 6v6 PvP, split up and go to 3v3 PvP, et cetera. At launch, Destiny 2’s 4v4 PvP completely broke this pattern, and we want to reset that bone with PvP this Fall.

We’ve revised the playlists a lot, and here’s how it’s going to work:

We’ve removed the Quickplay and Competitive nodes from the Director.

If you’re looking for an experience like Quickplay, we’ve added Classic Mix (a connection-based playlist [like Quickplay today]). Classic Mix includes Control, Clash, and Supremacy.

Competitive is replaced by 3v3 Survival (which now awards Glory).

We’ve also added a Survival Solo Queue playlist that also awards Glory.

We’ve added 6v6 Control as its own playlist.

With the potential influx of new players this Fall, we want to have a playlist that signals to new players that this is where to start.

We feel like 6v6 Control is the right starting place when introducing new friends to Destiny.

We’ve added a weekly 6v6 rotator and a weekly 4v4 rotator.

These rotator playlists are where modes like Clash, Supremacy, Mayhem, Lockdown, and Countdown will appear.

We’ve removed some underperforming maps from matchmaking, too.

We’ve also been working on four variants of 3v3 Elimination. They include different approaches to revives (token resurrection or not) and variations on how Heavy ammo works. Elimination is going to make its return in Crucible Labs. However, Elimination is very much unfinished. It’s missing VO, and there are no unique medals associated with it. Between the missing polish and the four variants we’d like your feedback on, Elimination—for the time being—is a great fit for Crucible Labs. We fully expect it to graduate out of Labs and find a warmer home.

We wanted to make sure we could test Elimination on some familiar maps, so we’ve brought back Widow’s Court and Twilight Gap. We want to play with you, and watch you play Elimination in this combat sandbox and see how it all fits together.

We’re also changing how we do matchmaking. With a bunch of potential new players entering Destiny via New Light, we don’t want PvP to feel like you’re being told it’s time to learn to swim as the helicopter door opens over the Pacific Ocean. So, we’ve made some changes to separate the new swimmers from the Olympians.

Additionally, we’ve also taken a longer look at matchmaking and overhauled the skill-matching system. In the game today, Quickplay is the only playlist that doesn’t have some version of skill matching in the game. We’re preserving that behavior (connection matchmaking) in the 6v6 Classic Mix playlist. Here’s what gets really annoying about skill match:

When it’s overly restrictive, it’s fatiguing when every single game feels like a sweat fest.

When it’s overly loose, a player can get an entire evening of unlucky matchmaking RNG where they’re getting dumped on by squads of Terminators shredding Kinderguardians. A bad time (for the Kinderguardians)!

There’s much more complexity and nuance to an evening of PvP than those two statements above, but they do accurately capture the core problem: a lack of match-to-match variety. Sure, for a bunch of Terminators, a night of stomping might be a blast, but what about the folks on the receiving end of that business? This is where it gets tricky to improve matchmaking—people generally tend to focus on their own experience in their feedback.

We think variety across an evening of PvP is important. This Fall, skill match should ensure a wider variety of matches, regardless of player skill. Some matches should be tense and thrilling, while other matches should be stomps. This philosophy should also apply to the top players, so they don’t feel like every match is a sweatshow, either. We’ve refactored how players gain Glory ranks with these skill match changes—we’re factoring in your skill value to Glory gains and losses, so that number can more effectively represent skill. We’ve also made a number of quality-of-life changes to Glory, Valor, and Infamy to make losses less punishing to your streaks. Once the above changes go live in October, we’ll be watching, listening, and reading as you check them out.

AN EVOLVING WORLD

There’s an aspirational vision for what “evolving” could mean for Destiny. Someday, Destiny could become a dynamic world, where the world changes each season. We want playing Destiny to feel like you're playing in a game world with true momentum, a universe that is going somewhere. A game where things are happening—not just in terms of new items and activities but also in terms of narrative. It’s frequently seemed like Destiny was treading water in terms of moving the world’s narrative forward. We want to tackle this in Destiny 2’s third year.

During Season 8, a new situation will unfold on the Moon (I’m being cagey here only because I am reluctant to spoil anything). Over the course of the season, parts of the game will change before the situation culminates in an event that will ultimate resolve it, and its content will be exhausted. But this resolution sets up the events of Season 9, which again adds something new to the game and resolves it, something that too will go away, but not before setting up Season 10, et cetera.

This differs from last year’s Annual Pass, which permanently added activities to the game. This year will see events that last for three months and offer new rewards to chase, although at the end of that period, some of the activities will go away. For a time, the rewards will too. But we also acknowledge that part of playing Destiny is collecting all of the stuff, so in future seasons the weapons and Legendary armor associated with these seasonal activities will be added to other reward sites.

I alluded to some of this when we were Looking Back. The game continuing to grow forever isn’t something we can support. Destiny’s simulation, fidelity, and architecture fundamentally make it a big game. I’ve seen a lot of “game X does it, why can’t Destiny?” but the referenced games and ours have very different technical profiles.

Technical limitations aside, we also don’t think making a game that grows forever is Destiny’s path forward. It’s why the second component of the vision is a single, evolving world (to clarify, that single evolving world doesn’t mean there’s only one destination on the Director—that’s not where we’re heading!).

You were there with your friends, got the gear and weapons to remember it by, made the memories, and changed alongside Destiny.

In late August, we’re going to talk more about the Annual Pass and how it’s continuing to evolve.

Aikatsu! Episodes 161-168

Going on for our dreams with all our knowledge from our great potato days™

Like promised, here I'm for more OGkatsu. It's kinda wild to think I just started this yesterday and I've already passed the mid-point of the season, it makes me sad that this is such a short season because I'm loving it, even the parts I don't like. XD Oh well, it is what it is (sadly), let's go to the episodes.

To start this batch we have the episode of Nina! Like I said before, getting to know idols from other schools is my favorite element of this tour, so this episode got me really pumped. I had a Kokone experience here again, from m past knowledge of reading the wiki, checking youtube, and playing photokatsu I always had Nina in a very high place, but at first in this episode I really disliked her? I don't, I think is her style of comedy that just doesn't hit with me so I had this very awkward feeling throughout the episode. But as I was seeing more of her my appreciation for her started to rise again, and when she explains she became an idol so that she can make people smile like people on tv made her smile when she was younger my heart melted and I open my eyes to my laptop screen and said "come here, my child". XD

Another thing that I appreciate a lot is how different of an idol she is and how her school specializes in something that is kinda vital for idols on Asia but that doesn't get as much highlight in most idol anime franchises. I think the last thing I have to add here is how weird Mieu Miel's lyrics are like I knew the song was a mess (that I love), but I didn't know the lyrics were that weird. XD

The next episode is a follow up from the past one, but it wasn't as interesting. To be honest, I was very bored with this episode. Again, Nina's style of comedy isn't really my thing so watching the girls doing her thing trying to please an audience didn't work for me. This episode could be a very good one to show that comedy ain't easy, and that is difficult to please an audience, but they had to come up with a super kindergarten that has a very sharp eye to comedy on the mix and it ruined every good intention this episode had. Also, this happened and this ain't cool.

We're back to starlight again for another CM shooting, this time for a new line of toys. Ironically, none of the idols participating uses Magical Toy, but oh well. This episode was actually very cute, we could've gone without the Sena x Akari thing, but it was still very lovely. The passion of woman in charge of the Aikatsu Dolls was very adorable to see, and as hard it is to believe, seeing how Asuka gives her love and attention to every Angely Bear out there really made me all warm and fuzzy inside. It also worries me quite a lot because she probably has some terrible arthritis, I hope grandma has a very good doctor.

Episode 164 was kinda weird, we were just seeing the girls running around from place to place recording shows for New Year's Eve, and even though not a lot was happening there, I still liked it? I don't know, it was something so different from the usual, it was interesting to see. Given that I probably feel this way about this episode just because we're following Nono and Risa, but still I enjoyed. I don't know how necessary it was for DanDiva to perform at the end, but to balance things out we can see Ichigo giving some of her knowledge to the new girls making her aura as an inspirational senpai get even bigger which I like.

I was very shookt by episode 165 because I didn't expect the tour to be ending so soon??? It's just the half of the season, they could've gone for at least more 3~5 episodes IMO. But despite this, the episode was still good, the idea of bringing snow in trucks from Hokkaido is very absurd, but I like the intention and in the end, it works so that's what matters. What I like the most is that this is a Christmas episode that is very different from the usual for Aikatsu and I love that they made something new for it. I don't get why we had to see Ichigo, Mizuki, and Juri performing with Luminas, but I appreciate that they've done it. I haven't watched the Xmas episodes from Stars, but I think I can safely say that this is my favorite Christmas episode of the franchise.

The only thing about this episode that makes me sad is that another "tour" girl wasn't used properly and all she got was just a few seconds on screen.

The shookness never stops, because the next episode caught me completely off guard by already announcing the Starlight Queen Cup. THANK GOD, the cup isn't starting yet, but I sure wasn't ready for seeing this happening so soon. The episode tried something nice by playing with Sumire's doubts and insecurities about the cup, but in my eyes, the resolution of the conflict wasn't as good, I do think that it'd be more emotional if Sumire's realization came after a few episodes. But then again, shorter season they can't take as much time to deal with things sometimes, so I can give this a pass. Now there's no excuse for not putting Mizuki, Otome and Sakura on a collab stage, COWARDS.

Now Episode 167 is probably my least favorite of this season. Nothing here was interesting to see, I'm sorry. This episode is probably the favorite of many shippers out there, but since I couldn't care less about Sena and Akari I couldn't care less about this episode as well. That's it, I have nothing else to add about this one.

Last but not least is Episode 168, and I have mixed feelings about this one. I thought this episode was building up for Risa and Nono to start growing individually, which was something I was eager to see, but by the end, the conflict was another thing which to me was a little weaker from what I wanted to see happening. I also kinda don't like that both girls were chosen as May Queens because it kinda weakens the whole thing they were trying to do. But somehow, even though I have such big problems with this episode, I still loved this episode? I think this was one of the rare cases where expectation and reality are very different, but the reality wasn't all so bad? I don't know how to explain it. Maybe is my love for Risa screaming louder on my subconscious "this isn't what you wanted, but is still good" trying to convince myself this episode wasn't bad, or if it's just my love for the lucky train parody and my brain is going "ohhh this is what they were referencing", the thing is that I liked, despite its flaws.

And this was Aikatsu for the day, no windows update shenanigans this time, THANK GOD. Can't believe I'm just 10 episodes away from the end and that I'll be done with this season in two days, I don't wanna let my baby Risa go. T-T Hope it won't take very long to see her in On Parade. Anyway, I'm gonna get gloomy now while I eat a slice of pizza and watch videos of Risa on youtube (gosh I'm ridiculous), see you guys tomorrow. Bye-bi~

Super-long rant-review post about Werewolf of London (1935) with images and spoilers...

I love Werewolf of London, this 83-year-old film. It’s got some problems typical of 1930s Hollywood, but I still find a lot of value in it.

The setting, the moonlit hills of Tibet. Accuracy? not so much.

Apparently the “Tibetans” are actually speaking Cantonese...and the white actors are clearly not speaking anything. 30 years before Star Wars and it honestly sounds like they’re speaking Ewok...but it’s just gibberish. I think the only realistic part of this scene is the fact that there actually are bactrian camels in Tibet. At least it’s quite well filmed.

The sequence where Dr. Glendon (Henry Hull) is attacked by the werewolf is really eerie and holds up well.

The actual bite is so quick but if you screencap that second it’s creepy AF.

Despite the attack, Dr. Glendon gets his coveted “Mariphasa Lupina Lumina” flower (sadly, completely fictitious) and heads back to England.

In his lab, Dr. Glendon lives out his mad-scientist aesthetic surrounded by some high tech equipment. He even gets buzzed by his wife on what is basically an old-timey FaceTime device that lacks audio. Even though we know it’s superimposed footage it’s fairly seamless.

Next we get a little portrait of a marriage. He’s working on an experiment with flowering and artificial light and his wife Lisa (Valerie Hobson) wants to know what the hell he’s up to. He’s secretive and she’s understandably annoyed. But she calls him “dear old bear” which is quite sweet but ironically hints at the animalistic transformation to follow. He says that after the experiment he will try to be more “human” but we know that ain’t gonna happen.

Henry Hull’s accent. It needs its own paragraph. It’s not bad for someone from Louisville, Kentucky, and in fact sometimes it’s really amazing, but other moments it crosses your mind that the dialect coach was out sick that day of shooting. He enunciates very strongly. His jaws much have hurt him a bit. He’s fun to listen to though and you gotta give the guy credit because he doesn’t shy away from being über-Brit.

Enter Lisa’s old childhood sweetheart Paul, played by the adorkable yet suave Lester Matthews. He and Lisa, whom he refers to as “Lee”, reminisce about their joint childhood exploits.

Cue Dr. Glendon’s jealousy:

Understandably, Dr. Glendon is quietly dying inside because he hates all the socializing that comes with being a world-renowned botanist. Seeing another man making his wife smile does not help his mood.

Lookit ‘em; holding hands for heaven’s sake. Aunt Ettie also likes to stir up trouble and add to Glendon’s jealously which isn’t very nice of her.

Side note, Dr. Glendon has some tricked-out plants:

Now we meet Dr. Yogami (Warner Oland).

Warner Oland, who was often cast as Asian characters because he “looked Asian”, was actually Swedish. (One would think that 80 years later this casting of white actors in non-white roles would have come to an end but we’re still dealing with this crap.) While Oland is a fairly good actor, he’s still NOT Asian and it would have been so much better if they had cast Sessue Hayakawa as Yogami as he was not only gorgeous but a better actor.

However, Yogami is implied to be Chinese or Tibetan and Hayakawa is Japanese. Still, if the character was stated as Japanese it would have been perfect. Ironically, later on in the film Aunt Ettie keeps calling him Yokohama which is the second largest city in Japan. And I can’t find the surname Yogami anywhere. I can find Yagami and that’s a Japanese surname, not Chinese or Tibetan as far as I can tell. Oh, Old Hollywood and your stomach-churning whitewashing.

Dr. Yogami says that they met before in Tibet...in the dark. He’s giving him a really big hint that he’s the one who bit him (...either that or he’s implying they met for an evening liaison). Dr. Glendon is trying to piece it together.

Dr. Yogami says, “The medical term is ‘lycanthrophobia’.” WRONG. The medical term is lycanthropy, if being a werewolf was actually real. (The uncommon thing were people grow all the excess facial hair is hypertrichosis.) Clinical lycanthropy is a rare psychological condition that is linked to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and/or clinical depression. (More on that later.)

Here’s a cap of Dr. Yogami intimately stroking Dr. Glendon’s injured arm while making hella awkward eye contact. As modern viewers we may or may not have a strong impulse to read this as somewhat sexual, or maybe as an identification of repressed homosexual desire. Lycanthropy in literature and film mythology has occasionally been used or identified as a metaphor for homosexuality.

In a world where stabbing yourself with a plant gets rid of monthly hair growth. I’m curious to know why it looks like his stabbing it into a dorsal metacarpal vein and not the palmar (inside) side of wrist....medical side of Tumblr help me out here. Maybe they just wanted to feature the hairy hand.

Dr. Yogami essentially asks Dr. Glendon for a blossom of the glow-in-the-dark flower to save his soul (and his fellow botanist as well), albeit in a cryptic way. He says “But remember this Dr. Glendon, the werewolf instinctively seeks to kill the thing it loves best.” Sadly, Dr. Glendon thinks he’s full of crap and ignores his warnings despite knowing that stabbing himself with this rare flower magically makes his moon-grown hand-hair disappear. Dumb or in denial?

So of course Dr. Yogami steals not one, but two flowers. For two of the four nights of the full moon. Technically there is only one night of full moon at any given time but I’m going to give this a pass. Maybe during the time that the moon is still almost full, though waning, it still have the power to change man into the “satanic creature.”

Meanwhile, skeptical Dr. Glendon does a little lycanthropic research:

Lisa drops by and asks him to join her and Paul at a society party but he pegs out or course, and then adds a jibe about not wanting to hear anymore childhood memories. Is the werewolf infection making him bitchy or is he just like that? Hard to tell.

Lisa is hurt. But he says she should go out and enjoy herself. She tries to show him this brocade he bought her but he flips out when she turns on the lights. Presumably being a werewolf makes you sensitive to light.

He responds with the “I put some medicine in my eyes” routine and they clearly don’t buy it.

Seems fake, but ok.

I feel like this is one of many allusions to depression in this film: sensitive to light, wanting to be alone, disliking small-talk and society parties, general introversion and distrust of others. We get a sense that he’s kind of this way anyway at the core of his personality but the werewolf contamination has made that all worse.

Dr. Glendon may be a jerk but it’s hard not to feel sympathy for him. He really does love her. She’s still too annoyed to reciprocate.

Even his cat’s pissed at him.

When animals start rejecting you, ya know you got problems.

And lo, he thought, “oh shit.”

The moonlight transformation sequence is quite simple by today’s standards of physical and special effects, but it’s still effective. Using the shadows to break up the footage isn’t fooling anyone, especially nowadays, yet it has a kind of fluidity that makes it oddly very evocative.

A word about Jack Pierce’s makeup. Believe it or not it was originally going to look like this:

Oink oink. Thank heavens someone talked Jack into a more minimalist look. Jack Pierce, known for his incredible work on films like Frankenstein (1931), The Mummy (1932), and The Wolf Man (1941), to name but a few, appears to have been a tad stubborn depending on the actor he worked with. He had a great relationship with Boris Karloff as far as I’m aware but the harmony working with Hull didn’t last long. There was a rumor going around that Hull was super vain and didn’t want the makeup to obscure his face. The truth of it was there are a couple scenes when Lisa and Paul both recognize him and if the werewolf makeup was applied too heavily, this part of the plot just wouldn’t work. Apparently Hull went over Pierce’s stubborn head straight to Carl Laemmle to fix the problem. The book Universal Horrors: The Studio’s Classic Films, 1931–1946 by Tom Weaver and John Brunas has more on this. (And in the Svengoolie intro to the film featured on ME TV.) The incident paid off because the final makeup was stellar.

That awkward moment when someone steals your flowers:

Suddenly filled with jealous rage...

...but wait lemme just put my hat and coat on first. If he does that when he’s full-on werewolf can you imagine how much time it takes for him to get ready normally? Diva.

The obligatory party scene...

...with a comic interlude from Aunt Ettie who drunkenly says to “Dr. Yokohama” as she calls him, pointing to a dodgy district visible from her flat, that people there would “knife you for a shilling.” But then they hear the howl of a “lost soul” which is the chilling call of Dr. Glendon and it’s time to go inside.

Drunk lady trope scene. No point in rescuing her she already made a fool out of herself but off they run:

There is a ring of sadness to Aunt Ettie’s drunk scene because she says “she gets so nervous.” Hello social anxiety. She is a tad obnoxious as a character but this part makes her seem so much more sympathetic.

“A-woooooooooooo!”

Ok, that’s not a dog.

Dr. Yogami is quaking in his spats at this point.

Even though you know that this is Dr. Glendon, this remains creepy. Who hasn’t thought of a monster clawing their way into your bedroom late at night? They really milk the suspense in this scene.

Lisa is offended by Dr. Yogami’s seemingly sexist and controlling behavior but in reality he’s trying to save her life. He knows that Dr. Glendon is on the loose and can probably smell her and will likely kill her. But she goes up to comfort her friend anyway.

Cue the “you just had a bad dream” scene. For once Ettie isn’t full of hogwash.

Poor Ettie. Seeing a werewolf will sober you up pretty quick.

Mr. Hyde? Oh wait, wrong movie.

Apparently all young women of a lower class looked like Hollywood starlets back then. Pretty stylish.

This is why I don’t have a Tinder.

Dr. Yogami executes an A+ facepalm. His wrist-leaning skills are classic. 10/10:

I mean, what did he think was going to happen? You can’t blackmail a guy who’s in denial about being a werewolf, it doesn’t work. But then, if he left one flower there you wouldn’t have a second act.

Paul says that it might be a werewolf attack. He’s almost joking but he makes the suggestion anyway. His uncle, head of Scotland Yard no less (now that’s convenient) thinks this is ridiculous.

Meanwhile Dr. Glendon reads about how he accidentally murdered a woman last night:

“You’re being utterly hateful, Wilfred.” She sees that he’s not happy and we all know that he’s past the point of no return. Someone has already died. His bitterness at her relationship with Paul is exacerbated by this revelation. But he doesn’t storm from the room or hurt her. He actually acts like an adult, says he’s sorry, and says that he will go out horseback riding with her after all. A lot of reviewers don’t like his character but I find him continually sympathetic.

Again, it’s a realistic portrayal of a marriage. Dr. Glendon “forbids” his wife to go out on a midnight horseback ride with her ex. As sexist as his I’m-the-man-putting-my-foot-down-with-the-wife routine is, he has a couple genuine reasons for acting this way. He’s worried about her safety cause he knows the moon is gonna make him crazy and he could unintentionally kill her in a fit of jealous rage. And of course he’s ticked off that Lisa is galavanting around with another man. She in turn is appropriately angry with his controlling remarks without having good reason for his concern...plus she wants to prove a point that he’s not making enough time for her in their marriage.

Mrs. Moncaster explains how decking her “dearest friend” Mrs. Whack was an appropriate action to take in the sake of business.

Dr. Glendon calls himself “Singularly single, madam. More single than I ever realised it was possible for a human being to be...” Which seems to evoke qualities of his situation and depression. He feels so isolated.

He prays that this transformation won’t happen again but it does.

“If I ran the zoo I'd let all the animals go” - Dr. Seuss. This is Glendon’s way of causing a distraction so that he can attack another woman but it’s also symbolic of him releasing his inner animalistic nature.

Ya gotta appreciate the special effects:

Dr. Yogmai hails from the University of Carpathia. Here to represent.....an institution that I’m fairly certain doesn’t exist. Unless they mean Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University but that wasn’t established until 1940. Still, he’s a professor of botany so that’s cool. Kind of like Professor Lupin.

Presumably, Dr. Yogami goes to Paul because he’s well connected and he wants to prevent Dr. Glendon from doing anymore damage.

A+ usage of the scary uplighting effect.

Dr. Glendon instructs a servant to lock him in until sunrise. Oh the upper-classes and their odd demands.

Paul still loves her. Duh. She can’t reciprocate because she’s married.

Those bars are toast.

Henry Hull does a great job of prowling with just the right balance between animal and man.

Now that’s a scream:

Paul to the rescue.

Paul recognizes Dr. Glendon. (Thanks, Mr. Hull.)

Dr. Yogami’s rooms “smelled like a kennel" when they found the mutilated maid. Yuck. Did he pee all over the room? Not something anyone likes to think about for too long. Especially the head of Scotland Yard. Just look at his face.

Paul digs through the trash and finds the discarded flowers.

Maybe Paul should work for Scotland Yard instead of his uncle.

Hey how was your trip? So, Hawkins (J.M. Kerrigan) doesn’t think it’s odd that Dr. Glendon is hiding from the police? Does he even know why? Did Glendon tell him “hey I’m a werewolf and I accidentally killed people?” or does Hawkins just give him a pass like “it’s his life and none of my business.”? Well, as the scene suggests, Hawkins clearly does not know because he’s confused by how important this damn flower is to Dr. G.

I have to say, I get this excited about my sweet peas every year so I totally identify with his reaction. #humor

How does he even get into the lab?! Dr. Glendon needs better security or just, ya know, locks.

Somehow Glendon doesn’t see Yogami tip-toeing down the steps. How bad does your peripheral vision have to be?!

"You brought this on me that night in Tibet!” (You don’t say.)

The problem with stealing a plant that only blooms as the moon emerges is that the werewolf might kill you mid-transformation. Exhibit A:

They were both doomed anyway.

Dr. Glendon goes looking for Lisa.

Lycanthropy makes Dr. Glendon strong. Those chintz curtains and flimsy doors are no match for him.

Paul also lacks clear peripheral vision, apparently. Funny how ya don’t see a werewolf perched above a door you’re about to go into.

With all that jumping off buildings, werewolves must be prime candidates for knee replacement surgery.

More great uplighting to do justice to some remarkable makeup:

“It’s Lisa!”

Who the hell is Lisa?

Maybe he remembers at this point. Hard to tell.

A regular bullet does the job. The myth that a werewolf can only be killed by a silver bullet most likely dates back to the legend of the Beast of Gévaudan, in which a humungous wolf is killed by a hunter named "Argent" which is Latin for silver, who uses a gun loaded with silver bullets. The filmmakers clearly don’t feel that this is a necessary part of this movie’s mythology. And in a way, this is a good decision because it makes the werewolf more pitiable and certainly less mythological. If a werewolf has most of the same vulnerabilities as a human, most of the same human rules of existence apply because werewolves are not semi-indestructible. It also just makes werewolves more human and more sympathetic. Werewolf!Glendon is basically afflicted with a kind of disease that could hypothetically be explained by medical science; he isn’t some mythological beast.

We can presume his soul is saved. “Thanks...thanks for the bullet. It was the only way. In a few moments now, I shall know why all of this had to be.”

“Good-bye, Lisa. Lisa – good-bye...I’m sorry...I couldn’t have made you...happier...”

(This is immediately followed by the sound of my heart breaking.) Seriously, this isn’t a guilt trip like he thinks Lisa is some overly-needy wife. He knows that he’s not always equip to give Lisa what she needs out of a relationship. He genuinely feels bad. It isn’t because of the lycanthropy, he was like this before, as a scientist. Did he have depression anyway? He might have. He really does love her and they have an understanding. This is probably some of the best acting in the film, the way that Hull delivers his lines and the look on Valerie Hobson’s face tells you so much.

Thankfully, his death means that he is free of lycanthropy.

The sun comes up.

A plane is in the air, presumably Paul and Lisa are off to California.

And then we get a nice transition into the Universal Studios plane.

Incubus [4]: Bucky x Reader

Warnings: not much... getting attacked at night, i guess?

The gentle rise and fall of your head against Bucky’s chest keeps you relaxed, the rhythmic exhales of his breath brushing ever so slightly against the crown of your hair. He’s got one arm curled underneath you, his hand pressed to your back to keep you close. Your legs are a tangled mess beneath the sheets of his bed. His body heat engulfs you with warmth and a sense of tranquility you know you won’t find anywhere else.

“Bucky?” you voice quietly, not wanting to disturb the atmosphere that’s been created between you two.

“Hmm?” his hum is so low, it’s almost a growl.

“Can I ask you about being an incubus?”

He can’t help but smile, amused by your inability to control your curiosity. “Of course, Lumina.”

“What’s it like for you?”

“What’s what like?”

“The sex.” You run your hand over his bare chest, watching your fingers dance across his skin. “Like, is it as intense for you as it is for me?”

“It depends,” he starts. “With you, yes, things are rather intense. It feels better and the energy lasts longer. The transference is stronger with humans than other creatures of myth. With only one exception. At least in my experience.”

“What was the exception?”

“An ethereal.”

You lift your head off his chest, looking up at him in shock. “You’ve slept with an ethereal?”

He releases a soft chuckle. “Just once.”

“What was that like?”

“Intense,” he jokes. When you send him a pouty glare, he explains further with a grin. “The energy was very potent, but it didn’t last nearly as long as it does with you.”

You hum thoughtfully. “Was she fire or lightning?” you ask curiously.

He laughs again. “It’s kind of cute that you would assume it was a female,” he grins teasingly.

Your brows shoot up in surprise. “You slept with a male ethereal?”

Keeping one arm around your waist, he lifts the other to tuck his hand behind his head, a smug grin curling at his lips. “Yes. And to answer your question, he was bonded to lightning.”

“Wow,” you breathe, slowly overcoming your shock. “Do you sleep with males often?” you question curiously.

Bucky shrugs a shoulder. “You have to remember that sex is different for an incubus. We use it to feed, not necessarily for the emotional connection. The gender of my partner doesn’t matter nearly as much as the energy transference.”

He hadn’t meant to, but something about his words strikes a chord within you and you frown. You push yourself off his chest, holding the bedsheet in place as you sit up. “Is that why you’re keeping me around then? Because the energy transference is so strong?” You feel a sting in your chest. You hadn’t realized until this moment that there was a possibility he was just using you.

“What?” he asks, a little thrown by how fast the conversation shifted. “Lumina, no. It’s not that.” He sits up as well. “Do you really think I’m the kind of man that would do something like that?”

You shrug defensively, keeping your gaze downcast. “I don’t know. We hardly know each other.”

His hand reaches out, gently cupping your cheek and lifting your gaze. His eyes are sincere as he looks back at you. “Then ask me more questions. Get to know me.”

You tug your bottom lip between your teeth. Now that your insecurities have been bared, it’s difficult to hold the rest in. “Last weekend you said that demons couldn’t love. Is that true?”

Bucky has to hold back a grimace. That wasn’t exactly what he meant by ask him questions. “Love is a complex emotion, Lumina. And demons are simple creatures.”

He can physically see you retreat a little further into your shell. “So, then it is true.”

He sighs, almost wishing that it was easier to lie to you. “I’ve never met a demon that’s admitted to falling in love,” he tells you. But before you can pull away from him, he quickly adds, “But that doesn’t mean we can’t experience emotions or feelings of attachment. We display our affections, we feel happy when those we care about are happy, and sad when they are sad. I’m a demon, not a robot.”

“Do you care for a lot of people?”

“I care for you,” he admits honestly. “And it’s not because of the transference. Yes, the sex we have is pretty phenomenal, but I also enjoy talking with you, making you laugh, feeling your body tucked against mine. Do you really think I share my past with just anyone? We knew each other one day and already I was willing to answer anything you asked me. Hell, after a few minutes I brought you to my home. You’re the only person I’ve brought here. The only woman to ever share this bed with me. When I’m with you, Lumina… there’s no one else. Do you understand how significant that is for an incubus to say?”

Your heart pounds in your chest as he seems to wipe away your insecurities with just a few words. You can’t even help it when you lean forward to press your lips to his. You’re so drawn to him it’s almost as if there are outside forces at work. Call it destiny, or fate. You didn’t care. Being with someone had never felt so right.

Bucky kisses you back fervently. His hand cups the back of your neck, fingers making their way into your hairline. He gently guides you back down onto the mattress, the thin sheet becoming trapped between your bodies. His mouth molds to yours, also aiding in the removal of your insecurities. He kisses you with purpose, trying to convey his earlier words through his actions.

When he pulls back, you’re absolutely breathless. Your gazes meet once more, his eyes are soft and tender. “If it means that much to you, we can spend the rest of the weekend just getting to know one another. Let me prove to you that this isn’t just about the sex.”

You find yourself smiling up at him, your hand reaching out to brush his hair back. Just the fact that he was willing to forgo sex to work on your relationship with each other was enough for you. You release a low hum, pretending to think it over. “But you already promised that you were going to fuck me against every piece of furniture you own… Maybe we can try the whole talking thing next weekend.”

He grins crookedly down at you, his gaze flickering between yours. “I think that’s the first time I’ve heard you say fuck.”

You laugh lightly. “Maybe you haven’t been trying hard enough to get me to say it.”

He smirks wickedly. Challenge accepted.

When Bucky takes you home Sunday night, there’s a satisfied ache between your legs that you know you’re going to need the week to recover from. He kept to his promise and he managed to draw out plenty of curses from your lips over the last two days.

You part with a heated kiss, leaving nips on lower lips so the sting will remain after you’ve separated. Unspoken promises are created for the next weekend. And at least this time, you’ve got his phone number. As you enter your apartment, you’re on cloud nine.

“Have an eventful weekend?” Wanda asks you with a knowing grin.

You bite your bottom lip, unable to hide your grin. “Mhmmm….”

She laughs. “You look worn out.”

“I tell ya, he’s a god damn machine.”

“Take a shower then come join me for a movie. I can smell the sex on you from over here.”

You shoot her a grin, and head to your room. “I’m sorry if my sexified stench offends you.”

She sticks her tongue out at you, her eyes shining with humor.

The work week once more passes like normal. That is… until Thursday night hits. Tuesdays and Thursday are your workout nights. There’s a 24 hour gym just a few blocks from your apartment, and you do your best to stay on routine. Saturdays used to also be a part of the routine, but you figure you’re getting enough of a workout now, that it’s not exactly necessary.

Because the gym is so close, you typically walk, unless its pouring rain. But it’s a clear night tonight, a little warm too. Your muscles burn slightly in satisfaction as you make your way home. You’d just completed your workout and you were more than ready for a quick shower and maybe some Netflix before bed.

One earbud is tucked into your ear, the other dangling loose as you bob your head to the catchy beat filling your head. You’re not really paying attention, lost to the music and your thoughts. Which is why you don’t feel the presence behind you until it’s too late.

A hand clamps around your upper arm moments before you’re thrown to the side. Your body impacts with the unyielding brick of the building framing the sidewalk. You gasp in surprise, looking up at your attacker.

Glowing red eyes meet your gaze, they shine with anger. “I’ve been looking for you, little angel.”

You feel your heart drop to your stomach when you realize who this is. It’s the vampire from the club. “What do you want?” you’re surprised when your voice comes out braver than you feel.

“You think you can just walk into an under club without there being any consequences? Did you really think you could hide from us? Were you gonna tell your superiors what you saw there?”

You shake your head quickly. “No. I don’t work for SHIELD.”

He releases a threatening growl. “Why am I having a hard time believing that? Oh yeah, because you descendants are nothing but filthy liars.” He grabs your shoulders in a harsh grasp.

“No! Let me go!,” you struggle against his hold, but your muscles are already weak from your workout. You’re no match for a vampire anyway. Even at full strength.

His eyes flash from red to a soulless black and when he opens his mouth, his incisors have elongated. “This world will be a whole lot better without your kind in it.”

You never cease your struggles, even if you know you won’t win. “Stop! Let me go!” You’re not entirely sure what guides your movement, but you find yourself pushing your hand out. You palm slams into his chest and suddenly there’s a flash of blinding white light.

You hear his hiss of pain, and just as suddenly as the flash appears, his hands are off you and you take the opportunity to run. You don’t give yourself the luxury to think about what just happened, all you can focus on is getting away. Your heart bangs in your chest, pumping blood to your weary muscles. The vampire can probably smell the fear wafting out of your system in thick waves.

He’s going to follow it, he’s going to find you. You have to get somewhere safe.

You close your eyes, picturing the one place you know you’ll be safest. But with how fast your mind is racing, you can’t for the life of you figure out how to get there.

Without warning, you feel a tug deep in your gut, like the floor has just dropped from beneath you. Releasing a startled gasp, you open your eyes. You automatically assume the worst, that the vampire recovered and pounced on you.

But looking around… the vampire isn’t in sight. In fact… you’re on a completely different street.

“What?” you gasp out, looking around in confusion. What the hell just happened? How did you get here? Where even was here?

You realize you’re standing next to a large building. Looking up, it only takes a second to realize that it’s Bucky’s building. You breathe a sigh of relief, because even if you couldn’t for the life of you figure out how you got here, at least it meant you were safe.

You push open the large glass door and enter the lobby. After stepping through, you realize you’ve actually never entered the building this way, and thus you have no idea where to go.

“May I help you?” a voice pulls your attention to the front desk. The lobby is built more like a hotel’s rather than an apartment complex. The concierge desk is wide and thick, separating you from the man standing on the other side.

You approach hesitantly, hyper aware of your recent altercation with beings of this man’s ilk. You can tell he isn’t human, but you’re not entirely sure what exactly he is either. Glancing at his name tag, you read the name Scott.

“Um… hi. I need to see James Barnes. It’s an urgent matter,” it’s difficult to keep the panic within you from making your voice waiver, but you seem to manage.

The man’s gaze washes over you. “I’m afraid Mr. Barnes isn’t accepting visitors tonight, Miss.”

“Please,” you choke out, the panic beginning to make your body shake. “It’s important that I see him right away.”

The man gives you a look of realization. “Oh, I believe I understand what’s happening. I’m afraid you’re going to have to find relief from your withdrawals elsewhere, ma’am.”

“What?” you look at him in confusion, until it hits you. He thinks you’re an incubus sex addict. And honestly, you’re probably showing all the symptoms. The shaking, harsh breaths, the desperation to see an incubus. You shake your head at him, “No, it’s not like that. I’m a friend of his. Please, I need to see him!”

“I cannot help you. Please don’t make me call security on you.”

You gape at him. You don’t know what else to do. All you do know is that if you don’t see Bucky soon, you’re going to have a complete mental breakdown in the middle of this lobby.

Because of how frazzled your mind is, it takes a while for you to remember that you have his fucking phone number. Your hand grasps at the strap holding your phone to your arm. You realize briefly that the chord to your earbuds had been yanked out of your phone and was now missing, but it’s a fleeting thought. Ripping the phone out of the case, you nearly scratch your arm with your nails. Your hands are shaking so bad, it takes effort just to get into your contacts. You scroll down, glad you put him in as Bucky and not James.

The phone finally begins to dial and you place it to your ear. A tiny part of you is terrified that he’s not going to answer, but he does after the second ring.

“Hey.”

“Bucky!” you breathe out in relief, the puff of air just as shaky as everything else. “I need your help.” It’s becoming harder and harder to keep it together. A few tears slip out of your eyes.

“What’s wrong?” his voice is steady and strong and you desperately try to hang onto it.

“The vampire. From the club. He came after me,” a choked sob escapes you.

“What?! Tony?!” You can hear the anger in his voice, and despite knowing that it’s not directed toward you, you can’t help but flinch.

“I got away. I don’t know how. There was this light, I think…? I- Bucky I was so scared,” your voice breaks off into a pitiful whimper.

“Where are you? Are you safe?”

You sniff, attempting to wipe away some of your tears. “I’m in the lobby of your building.”

“I’ll be right down,” he tells you quickly.

“Okay,” you sniff again. Your shoulders sag in relief, the hand holding your phone falling limp to your side.

The few seconds it takes for his elevator to descend seem to tick so slowly. But then a soft ding rings throughout the room and suddenly he’s there. His black slacks are slung low on his hips. The white dress shirt he wears is unbuttoned, the material hanging loose against his sides. His steps are hurried as he approaches you, bare feet barely audible against the tile.

“Lumina, are you hurt?” Concern lines his features as he reaches out to cradle your jaw in his palms.

You shake your head, a few more tears spilling, only to be caught by his thumbs. His gaze washes over you.

“Your shoulders are bruised. Did he bite you?”

You shake your head again. “I think he was going to. I stopped him somehow. I don’t- I don’t know…”

He releases an angry growl, the blue in his eyes flashing to black for a brief moment. “I’m gonna kill him.”

“No!” you cry out, launching yourself forward. You bury your face into his chest and wrap your arms tightly around his torso. “Don’t go. Please!” You can’t bear the thought of being alone. Not right now.

“Hey,” Bucky softens his voice, his arms coming around you in a comforting embrace. He can feel how hard you’re shaking, it makes his chest ache. “It’s okay. You’re safe here. I’ll protect you.” He lowers his head, placing a kiss to the top of your hair. You only tighten your hold on him even further. “You got away from him. You’re safe,” he whispers to you soothingly.

You inhale sharply, slowly lifting your head from his chest to look up at him. “That’s another thing,” you whisper back. “Bucky, I don’t even know how I got here.”

He doesn’t seem particularly shocked by this revelation, he merely nods and continues to hold your gaze. “Alright. Let’s get you upstairs. Then we can figure this out together.”

“Okay.” Your voice is so small and weak, almost like a child’s.

Bucky keeps your body tucked into his side. He looks over to the man at the desk, who has grown quite pale upon witnessing your interaction. “Scott, see to it that she’s given full access to my pent house. She’s never to be barred from entrance again.”

The man nods frantically. “Yes, Mr. Barnes. My apologies.”

With one arm still around you, Bucky guides you to the elevator. You realize that this must be a different elevator from the usual one, because there are actual buttons on this one. Bucky presses for the top floor. The silence between the two of you is broken only by your quiet sniffles and the occasional shuffle of clothing as you try to burrow further into him.

The elevator doors open to a small entrance room. There’s a door on the other side. Bucky pulls his keys out of his pocket and unlocks the door. Some of the tension seems to leave your body when you step into his apartment. This is as safe as you’re going to get.

Bucky turns to face you, pushing some of your hair back and continuing to look at you in concern. “How about I draw you a bath?”

You nod your agreement. He takes you to the bathroom in his bedroom. Keeping your hands clasped, he uses his other hand to turn the taps and start the flow of water. It doesn’t take long to heat up before he plugs the drain and allows the bath to fill.

He stands and turns back to you. He gives you a tender look, his eyes flickering over your form. “Can I undress you?” He may have already done so a dozen times, but after the trauma you’ve just gone through, he doesn’t want to startle you further.

You nod once more. His movements are slow, giving you time to anticipate his moves before he makes them. He reaches for your phone first, prying it from your fingers where you hadn’t even realized you were clutching onto it like a lifeline. He then pulls off your tank top and your sports bra. Bending down, he helps you out of your running shoes and socks before pulling your yoga pants and underwear down your legs.

“Can you join me?” you ask vulnerably as he stands again.

“Of course,” he agrees, shrugging out of his shirt. After tossing his pants to the side he bends back down to check the water temperature and then turns off the taps. He gets in first and then holds your hips as you follow to make sure you don’t slip.

He settles back against the rim, pulling your body flush to his as you settle between the V of his legs. The heat from the water mixes with the heat coming off of him and as you lean back against his chest, you can finally feel yourself beginning to relax.

“Where were you when it happened?” Bucky asks after a long moment of silence has passed.

Honestly, you want to just forget the whole ordeal, but you know you have to talk about it. “I was walking home from the gym. It’s only a few blocks away.”

His hands circle your stomach, pulling you a little closer. “Can you tell me what happened?”

You release a shaky breath. “He came up behind me. Grabbed my arm and threw me against a brick wall. I think he thought I worked for SHIELD. He said this world would be a better place without descendants in it. Then his eyes turned black and he opened his mouth. I begged him to stop, to let me go. And then… then I don’t even know what happened.”

Bucky’s head bends down as he brushes his lips against your shoulder. “Try to describe it.”

“I… um. I put my hand out,” mimicking your movements from before, you lift your hand out of the water and hold it up. “It was against his chest… And then there was a flash of light. I don’t know where it came from. From me? Maybe? I heard him hiss, possibly in pain, or just from anger. But he let me go and so I ran.”

“And then what happened?”

Your hand lowers back into the water. “I was scared he was going to come after me again. So I tried to think of the safest place I could go. All I could think about was being here. But then, next thing I know, I am here. And I don’t… How… Bucky, what’s happening to me?”

He can tell you’re scared, and he’d give just about anything to take your fear from you. “Your powers are emerging,” he tells you. “And quite rapidly, it would seem.”

Your breath hitches in your throat. “My powers?”

“There’s a chance that being with me has triggered them. The demonic energy from our couplings, it must have activated them in you. Normally descendants don’t get their powers unless given intense training. This is something I should have foreseen, I’m sorry Lumina.”

You release a soft sigh, settling your hands over his and entwining your fingers. “It’s not your fault. It takes two to tango.”

He places a kiss to your temple, his fingers squeezing yours gently.

“Can you help me control them? What if I accidentally use them on you? I don’t want to hurt you,” you frown. Using them against raging vampires was one thing, but if you were to hurt Bucky, you’d never forgive yourself.

He huffs out a quick laugh. “I’m afraid I’m not the correct person for that job. Demons harness energy quite differently from descendants. But Talia may be able to help.”

“Talia?” you question. “But she hates me.”

“Let me talk to her. I may be able to convince her.”

You bite your bottom lip. It might not be the most appealing option, but it was looking like the only viable one. “Okay. But only if you’re there too.”

He chuckles quietly, “Of course.”

“Do you even know what it was that I did?”

You feel Bucky nod his head. “Yeah. It sounds like you used light manipulation and translocation. Both are pretty advanced moves, which is probably why Tony didn’t expect you to have either of them.”

Your lips turn down slightly. “I still don’t understand.”

“Light manipulation allows you to create light. Judging by Tony’s reaction, I think you may have created a burst sunlight. And then translocation is basically just teleportation. You wanted to get somewhere safe badly enough that you were able to transport yourself here. We have wards set up to prevent descendants from being able to translocate directly into the building, which is why you showed up out front, but it got you close.”

You take a moment to process this information. It was difficult to believe that you could do either of those things, yet alone both.

“Do you think that this might be what Vision meant by trials?” you find yourself asking. The strange interaction with the seer was never too far from your mind, despite how much you’d try to distract yourself from it.

“I don’t know. Maybe. We’ll figure that one out together, too.”

You sigh quietly, sinking a little further into the water. “I don’t like being the cause of your problems.”

Bucky tightens his hold on you, placing another kiss to your cheek. “You’re not. If anything, this is all my fault.”

You release a humorless laugh. “We just keep going in circles with the blame, don’t we?”

He exhales in a laugh as well, the burst of air making your skin tingle. “Yeah, I guess we do. Wanna just share it?”

You find yourself smiling genuinely for the first time this night. You lean your head back against his shoulder and look up at him. “Sounds good to me.”

He smiles back at you.

You reach your hand up to cradle the back of his head, your eyes going soft. “Thank you for coming to my rescue again.”

You watch his gaze flicker down to your lips. “I didn’t even do anything.”

You smile, tugging him just a little closer. “You’re here and that means everything to me.”

His eyes turn molten with tenderness and desire. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

Your lips finally meet and you find yourself in complete agreement with him.

Womanlalaboy's Travel Guide to Gulugod Baboy

SUMMARY

Joiners are common for many climbing activities. A lot of people do this to be a part of a larger group as this would mean lesser expenses and a merrier climb. Joiners usually join, though, with some of their friends, but when I climbed Gulugod Baboy, I was on my own in a group of groups. It was fun, though- got the chance to learn a lot of life lessons and understand a few things about myself. I’ve gotten to meet interesting people and of course, experience the beauty of Anilao Batangas.

Gulugod Baboy would be an adventure enthusiast’s amusement park. It’s no longer required to get a guide to climb the mountain since 2005 and there are many trails to choose from to get to the summit. Climbers are also offered a panorama view of the coastal areas surrounding Mabini. More than that, there are many side trips to add in your adventure including island hopping to Sombrero, snorkeling, and possibly diving.

ITINERARY

3:00 AM - Meet up Imus Lumina 6:00 AM - ETA Phil Pan Junction 6:30 AM - Register Site. Breakfast. 7:00 AM - Start Trek 9:00 AM - Summit 10:00 AM - Start Descent 12:00 PM - Philpan drive resort for lunch, swimming 4:00 PM - ETD Phil Pan 8:00 PM - Imus

I joined a company club called TUCLAS (TaskUs Climbing Association) for their climb for a cause to Gulugod Baboy. Their beneficiary was Little Angels Foundation, Inc. They always do hikes with a purpose, and I think that’s beautiful. I found no reason not to join, so I did and I regret nothing.

SAMPLE BUDGET

for 30 pax

1050 - Environmental Fee per head is 35 500 - Guide's fee (divided by the number of persons included in the group) 3000- Entrance fee to Philpan Dive Resort per head is 100 1000 - Cottage per head would be 34 12000- 2 vans; Van transpo per head is 400 3450 - Fund for Little Angels Foundation, Inc. ___________________________________

21000 - 700 / head

We initially paid P 600 inclusive of transportation, cottage, and donation. Other activities such as diving and island hopping are not included in the package, though, as well as the entrance fee of P 100 per head to Philpan Dive Resort. The plan was to hike in the morning and do an island hopping for those who were interested, but we settled by the beach, swam and rested. If you’re just gonna do the climb, you wouldn’t need to shell out that much. Just leave a budget for your transportation, guide fee, and environmental fee if you’ll bring a private car, and you’re all set.

HOW TO GET THERE

Commute from Manila: Board any bus bound to Batangas Grand Terminal > board any jeep bound for Anilao, Batangas, drop off at Philpan- Mabini Junction > Rent a tricycle and drop off at Philpan Dive Resort/registration area

Bus liners are available along LRT-Buendia and Taft in Pasay, and Cubao and EDSA-Kamias in Quezon City (Jam, Jac Liner, ALPS). The fare for a ride to Batangas would be around P 170 depending on the bus liner you’ll catch or from what terminal you’ll come from. From the Batangas Grand Terminal, you can simply ride a jeepney to the Philpan-Mabini Junction for a fare of P 35. From the junction, ride a tricycle and drop off at the registration area. Fare is P 40.

Commute from Bacoor/Imus Cavite: Board a jeepney/bus bound for Dasmariñas Pala-pala terminal for P 25 (the terminal is right after 7/11 from your right) > Board a van bound for Anilao, Philpan- Mabini Junction > Rent a tricycle and drop off at Philpan Dive Resort/registration area for P 40)

The vans available in Pala-pala don’t really follow a schedule. They usually wait for the vans to get full before heading to Batangas. The jeepneys going back to Batangas Grand Terminal, though, are hard to find later than 8 PM. If you happen to miss the last trip to the Grand Terminal, ride a jeep bound for Bauan instead then board a jeep bound for Batangas Grand Terminal.

OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST

Diving

If you’re into diving, you’ll find Mabini irresistible. They’ve got a lot of Scuba Diving Resorts in the area like Halo Anilao Dive Resort, Aquaventure Reef Club Dive Resort and Aiyanar Beach & Dive Resort, but the closest from Gulugod Baboy, one of the cheapest and the most famous would be Philpan Dive Resort. They’ve got cottages for as low as P 500.

Island Hopping and Snorkeling

Since it doesn’t have to take too much time to climb Gulugod Baboy, many opt to do Island hopping afterwards to Sombrero Island. Boats can be hired from your lodging area or you can go to Anilao port to board boats going to Sombrero Island. Boat rental is around P 2500 to P 2800 for 10 pax.

Trail food (energy bars, peanuts, chocolates, banana, salt)

NOTES

Pack light if you’re going to commute. Those who will visit this place with their private car or van would have it easier. They can simply leave their stuff in the van and hike only with those they ultimately need.

Don’t eat heavy before the hike. Energy bars are better for activities like this.

Sun exposure is notoriously acute when dry. Apply plentiful of sunblock whenever needed.

When you encounter something that would hinder you from descending using the trail when you ascend (e.g. an accident / you suddenly felt ill), you can rent a tricycle from the camp to the registration area or to your lodging/resort for P 150.

When you miss all trips to Grand Terminal, you can rent a tricycle, but this would cost P 400 for 4 pax.

It’s not that safe to swim around Philpan as the rocks and pebbles would be too sharp for our bare feet. The place is a diving spot after all. It would help, though, if you use aqua shoes there.

While hiking, wear quick dry clothes and stay away from cotton fabrics and denim pants since you will be sweating profusely during the climb.

Wear a pair of hiking shoes or sandals.

LEAVE NO TRACE (LNT): Kill nothing but time, take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.

Ok, here's what's going on. i am basically a new driver and have passed my test 18 march last year. the time has come for me getting a car, however the insurance premiums are ridiculously high. I have used the comparing websites, but they offer no real result, so I phoned a few up. This is what they gave me, I was asking for a quote, on an 04 Renault Clio 1.2 Dynamic with 3 doors. Co-operative insurance 4645 (Full Comp) Direct line Over 3000(Full Comp) (they wouldn't give an accurate result, I'd have to be transferred onto another dept.) Quinn Direct 6000 (Third party, Fire & Theft only, i was then informed that their premiums where increased) All in my own name and not under any parents, however it seems like the best option at the moment. I do know about a few companies that specialise in young driver insurance, one called Young Marmalade and another called i-Kube. Churchill Car Insurance Problem?

Had accident which was my fault in Nov 08, hit a van in rear that stopped suddenly going through a roundabout (less than 5mph) and his trailer hitch ball went into my radiator and damaged the hood, grill and radiator. Car was 1996 Honda in very reasonable condition, MOT'd and all in good service despite its 125,000 mileage, new tyres, exhaust, battery, and clean throughout. Had fully comprehensive insurance with 50 deductable, loaner car and legal support so paid to be protected. When car was collected from accident, collecting garage said at that time that due to the mileage my car would not be repaired. However it took 5 to 6 weeks for the insurance examiner to determine that my car was beyond repair, so I did without a car all that time. Despite repeated phone calls to them, they never called me back as their examiner was on holiday. Then when we finally agree that a price of 500 for my car in January 08 and that took some haggling, the cheque never and so I started chasing them down in early February. I am then informed that I did not disclose a speeding violation on my application and they would have to listen to the tapes of my applying to verify this. Again this took several weeks, and I again had to pursue them for an answer to which they then said I had applied on the internet so no record of a phone conversation. The internet application was misleading, asking for what I believed was 3 years worth of offenses. I've only ever had 2 speeding offenses in my entire life - both speed cameras, just over the limit. The first was at 6 a.m. and I passed a bus pulling over to stop and as I passed it got flashed. The second on the day I found my dad had days to live and I was rushing to catch a flight, and as in both instances was doing 42 mph in a 30 mph zone for a very short period. Nonetheless, I was speeding and paid my fines. I wrote to the insurance company and apologised for not telling them of the other speeding ticket from 4 years and 9 months earlier as I forgot about it. But I admitted it, and apologised in writing. Then then came back to me saying that there would be additional premium to pay before I would get paid for my car. Well, its October 08, and I finally got a letter from the insurers saying they are not paying me as I failed to pay the additional premium requested and they were not going to renew my policy. I have never been asked even after repeated letters to them how much the additional premium was, and what I should do. No replies. I have asked for my car back which they agreed to pay for, and now they state there is nothing they can do, and it is their final decision. I went to the financial ombudsman and unbelieveably DID NOT get a reply from them. I've even spoken to one of their survey staff who tells me that they are incredibly busy and it was probably put aside and not dealt with. I'm at a total loss as to where I stand and how to pursue this without spending more than the accident and car was worth. I've written to their data protection officer and obtained copies of all documentation pertaining to this, so by their records can verify all this information quite clearly. Finally, I maintained my cool with them at all times. Never once did I raise my voice or become unprofessional with them. My questions are: 1. Can I legally request my car back as it has never been paid for? 2. Were they taking money for policy on a car they knew that through mileage alone, they would never pay for loaner car, or to have repaired? 3. This has meant over 30 letters and more phone calls than that to deal with, and rarely do they call you back or reply at all. Can I claim for this time and distress? 4. Am I totally wasting my time? I bumped into this lady because she actually did a full stop on a green light while getting out of a shopping center. She said it was o.k and that nothing happened and was apologetic saying that a car ran in front of her and that is why she did a dead stop in middle of intersection on a green light. She got my license number but did not call police, did not take pictures and did not get my insurance policy number. Just my name, insurance company I'm with and also drivers license number. She said it was o.k and my info just in case. Thing is when I got back from vacation I got a letter from my insurance saying she put in a claim against when nothing even happened to both of our cars. My question is what can I do? I don't want to pay deductible when it was HER fault. Nothing even really happened. She's pulling insurance fraud......and it really makes me mad that she put in a claim. I did not give her my insurance policy number guess she must of called around the biggest names and got my info somehow. i was looking around for auto insurance to see if there was anything cheaper than what im paying now. im a 20 year old male with a 2005 scion tc. i have been driving for about 2 years and currently use state farm. when i first insured my car 2 years ago, i was paying $148/mo. due to a speeding ticket, it has risen to $194/mo. i also have comprehensive and collision with a $500 deductible. $100,000/$300,000 coverage with full glass also. not complaining, i think this is great i looked at nationwide, allstate, geico, and progressive. these companies are supposed to be so great, but progressive quoted me at $485/mo for the same coverage! the other companies where all in that general area. progressives state minimum coverage plan for me was almost $300/mo. why do these other companies cost so much more? im not complaining about mine"",I would recommend you to try this web page where you can get rates from the best companies:""
