An 11 minute video shot in slow motion in only black and white. This video piece is a small uncut shot of an hour long process, of a physical activity/experience that could be understood by a large range of viewers. A luxury activity for new car owners or a chore to others.

Oral presentation:

This piece titled ‘Conventional’ (2020) is an 11 minute video performance in black and white depicting myself washing my car in an edited slowed down pace. This activity is commonly practiced and experienced by most viewers, as the repetitive movement and objective is enjoyed by new car owners or experienced as a chore to others. The goal is to present the object as looking new again or bring the quality and value back into it. I had positioned the camera and shot in a landscape camera angle to utilise the space, the car as the main object and myself shifting around it without cutting any of my movement out of the shot. I had chosen to edit the piece in black and white like an old film as I felt the lack of colour showed the true uneventful low climactic actions that were taking place. I believe the sound in this piece is very prominent, as the wind was so strong that the wind chimes could be heard along with the water dropping onto the surface of the car. The wind chimes had come across as very enigmatic to the audience, I liked this as it gave a meditative and relaxing element to the work. I chose to create this work as I wanted to focus on an everyday normal activity and the routine and repetition of human lifestyle. A job or chore that never ends, a constant repetition just as waking up and going to work.

Mierle Laderman Ukeles is a female artist centralised on feminist and service-oriented work, focusing on the idea of process in conceptual art. Ukeles’s work ‘Washing/Tracks/Maintenance: Outside’ (1973) depicts a series of photographs of herself mopping and cleaning the floors of the entrance of Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Ukeles cleaned the entire entrance by hand, a performance work that took her four hours, she had claimed the term and movement of maintenance art. At one point she is seen laying cloth diapers out one by one to dry the steps of the entrance, combining the museum and domestic world together as the cloth diapers were used to clean the surfaces of glazing on artworks and corresponding with the routinely works of changing diapers as a new mother. This was a statement she was making as once she became a mother she was approached as no longer holding the term as an artist. So she combined art and motherly duties into the term domestic maintenance. Ukeles performed four different art pieces within the same few months, ‘Transfer: The Maintenance of the art object’, ‘The Keeping of the keys: Maintenance as Security’ and Washing/Tracks/Maintenance: Inside’. Her series of photographs associated with the authority and power within the art museum, exposing maintenance workers and highlighting their actions during opening hours for an audience to witness, as these workers are usually invisible. In her piece ‘Washing/Tracks/Maintenance: Outside’ she stays centre entrance mopping the staircase with buckets of water while people entire.

In comparison to my work ‘Conventional’ and Mierle Laderman Ukeles work ‘Washing/Tracks/Maintenance: Outside’ both pieces are in a low saturated monochrome, that both entail the cleaning and removal of past imprints that were once etched onto the surfaces like tarnished memories. One of the main similarities I had come across is that we are both women artists. Women that are cleaning, this relates back to the old culture that women should be expected to complete house duties such as cooking and cleaning. As this maintenance was common around the 50s-70s. I believe if I had chosen a male artist to compare my piece to this comparison would become ineffective as it would have not been able to be made. Although in the context of cleaning an object such as a car would be considered un-ladylike and wouldn’t be accepted as an appropriate action or activity for a women at those times as it wasn’t the woman’s duty to involve themselves in driving or the mechanics of working a car. Ukeles’s pieces were shot in real time action that was performed live as mine was performed directly to the camera. I believe there is a type of advantage of performing live as you have a direct audience and are still able to capture the work on camera and re-install with an audience that got to experience it first hand. In my context my piece would not have been as effective live as the act and activity was not absurd enough to evoke a reaction from public eye unless the action was taken physically in a gallery space.

If you were to create an in-person (artist is present) performance in gallery or in a public space how would you do that?

As car washing has become a bit of a “sexy” suggested activity by Hollywood movies etc I think I could promote the idea of a certain “presence” without myself personally being there involved or actively contributing just as the performance artist Ana Mendieta was able to do, creating a presence that someone was once there but no longer is. I could have the car there and use certain fountains or hoses that stay in a certain position, even have the water come from the car and leak out and then utilising sound to create a presence The suggestiveness that the activity had taken place.
