sokka trying to get katara to give up on her waterbending bc it could get her killed. and katara refuses to give up and continues to practice anyway. bc sokka and katara represent the survival of both the people and the culture. sokka had the safety of their people thrust upon him by his dad, while katara is the only one in their tribe that can carry the weight of their culture. both are heavy burdens, and they're struggling with their roles bc they're just two kids trying to rebuild in the wake of genocide. but they refuse to give up, bc that's what the story is about.
holding onto hope, regardless of what you face.

The Official Field Greeter to Katmai National Park
flickr
The Official Field Greeter to Katmai National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr:  this is chunk (bear 32.) he was the first bear seen when they turned on the  explore.org bear cams the other day at brooks falls in katmai. this pic was taken that day. I have been checking the cams constantly since they were turned on and was lucky enough to see chunk and I was surprised how fat he is already and how good he looks, bear force one ( 747 ) has also been seen in the last week before the cams were tuned on and reportedly looks great. the salmon have not yet begun to run so the bears are scarce so far but keep checking because once the salmon appear so will lots of bears and it will happen soon and quickly. I will post a link to the bear cams  ~ johnny

Stand in solidarity with the Miccosukee:
Big Cypress Preserve is part of the Everglades, one of the largest remaining tracts of wetlands on Turtle Island (North America).
The Miccosukee Tribe have lived there since time immemorial and their care for their home has shaped it into the beautiful swamp we know today.
The National Parks Service is trying to rush a change in Big Cypress' designation from a Preserve to a Wilderness area. [plain text: The National Parks Service is trying to rush a change in Big Cypress' designation from a Preserve to a Wilderness area.]
This would give the area stronger protections for water quality, but would significantly limit the Tribe's access to their homelands and completely ignores how their stewardship of the lands and waters was and is crucial in maintaining the health of ecosystems.
There hasn't been a good faith effort to include the Miccosukee in a meaningful way (ie free informed prior consent & input!!!) on this change to their sovereign territory.
If you want to practice allyship, here's a chance. Sign the petition to show your support / solidarity with the Miccosukee. [plain text: Sign the petition to show your support / solidarity with the Miccosukee.]
Personalize it even just a little, even if it's just adding your own name or hometown. If you're able, print it out sign it and mail it. The Tribe and organizers working on this have a goal of getting 500 letters to the NPS/Secretary of the Interior. The online petition is almost at its goal! Just over 2,000 signatures left (as of Mar.16th 2024 21:30EST).
Please please share! I have it on good word that the NPS is trying to push this through before folks really have a chance to hear about what they're doing or make a fuss. So make a fuss we must.
The mailing addresses are below the cut for anyone who can send a physical letter!
Mail to:
Charles F. "Chuck" Sams III, Director
National Park Service 1849 C Street NW Washington, DC 20240
Secretary Deb Haaland

ruth acting out or fresh everything bagels sitting on the counter top waiting to be toasted
on friday, i went to a baseball game with finn and fall, and i drank a beer, and we ate hot dogs, and we watched the fireworks after the game like it was two thousand and twelve or something. it was a really nice night
we ran into one of their oldest friends at the game, someone they have known so long, i don't know if they can even remember meeting. i accidentally talked to her boyfriend as though he spoke my own language and it i guess it scrambled his brain for a bit, but i think he'll be alright
my dad usually takes me to a baseball game around my birthday, but a few days before the date of this year's game, i mentioned that i was looking forward to it, and he seemed confused. then he said, 'oh, that fell through,' and that was the end of that
this week has been full of unexpected, dark developments in the lives of people on the edges of my life. my usual experience of the world lives somewhere on the scale of tired sadness to hopeful joy, but this whole last week was stained by the lurking potential for tragedy
last night i dreamed about swimming through the crystal clear waters of a drowned city and massive waves would lift me up twenty stories in a moment and then drag me down into the depths. i dreamt about eating a package of ramen that tasted like a fried chicken sandwich with dill pickle chips, and i dreamt about finding a nest full of baby squirrels waiting to be fed

Honestly, I see misty, mossy forest pictures and all I hear now is a desperately sung "私は獣にあなたは妖精に生まれ..."
"I a beast and you a fairy were we born... Just for this one twinkling of a human moment tasting each other, we live..."
"Body like willowy torchlight softly cast The color of the lake shadowy but also rather of a deep lamentation"
"Even breath forgetting... Your voice far away... 'You will know I...am not...here...' "
"If there is writhing agony In your heart's depths... 'I have known that you...are not...here...' "
"I a beast and you a fairy were we born... Just for this one twinkling of a human moment tasting each other, we live..."
"No one even knows..."
"On the b e d of the l a k e..."
"If this is a dream I beg to just remain in it...always...forever..."

#sakurai atsushi#Tsuchiya Masami#my translations#chiisana mori no hito#小さな森の人#buck tick#this piece is more poem than song and I've tried to preserve that here#many of the end words of the english lines are the end words of the japanese lines#it felt important to preserve that for some reason#this is not a typical song at all#this was insanely tricky because despite how stingy with words it is there seems to be a lot going on with the kanji to deconstruct#so like the second line seems very over the top but that's the color of the kanji coming through- he chose very specific and unusual kanji#or at least it seemed to me that way so I tried to work it in while preserving and reflecting everything else#sparse on words *massive* in ideas and suggestions- he really outdid himself on this song#many of the comments on the initial video I found for this song had native speakers wishing he had published his own book of poetry#his son is an award winning writer and they were saying Atsushi could have done so as well- not to outshine his own kid but we missed out#and after translating this and fretting over it for weeks I have to agree#this song brought me to tears repeatedly when I first found it#this weird strange seductive lullaby where you don't know who's alive & who's dead- all you know is the sound and the glimmer and the taste#the taste is everything!! under the water on the BED of the lake where nobody even knows!!! God!!!!!#I hope when I am on the edge of death Atsushi calls me to the afterlife with this song- there's no other reasonable way to go honestly

Pears in Whisky Syrup
Tumblr media
When you come home from a holiday, even a short one, to find a glut of beautiful Williams pears scattering the Kitchen Garden where they have fallen, there is no time to waste to make a delicious recipe with them! These Pears in Whisky Syrup are a delicious way to preserve the bounty, which you will brighten a cold Winter day with a taste of sunshine and the delightful smokiness of peated Whisky! Happy Monday!
Ingredients (makes 2 jars; 1 large, 1 medium):
1 3/4 cup caster sugar
 3/4 cup demerara sugar
3 plump vanilla beans, split lengthwise
1 1/2 litre/6 cups water
about 30 just ripe Williams Pears
1/2 cup 10 Years Peated Bowmore Single Malt Whisky
In a large pot of boiling water, boil a 1/-litre/1-quart jar and a 1 1/2-litre/1-½-quart jar, 10 minutes, to sterelise them.
Pour caster sugar and demerara sugar in a large pot. Scrape seeds off the vanilla beans, and add both seeds and pods to the pot. Stir in water, and heat over medium-high heat, stirring often until sugar is completely dissolved. Once it is, increase heat to high, and boil rapidly, about 5 minutes, stirring often.
Meanwhile, halve, peel and core Williams pears. Reduce heat to medium-low and gently add pear halves into the syrup. Cover with the lid, and cook, for about 15 to 20 minutes, until just tender.
Stir in Whisky, and remove from the heat.
Remove jars from the boiling water carefully, and dry.
Carefully spoon pears and their Whisky syrup into sterelised jars, discarding vanilla pods, avoiding any drizzling on the side or rim. Once filled, close tightly and return to the boiling water bath, 20 minutes. Carefully remove from heat and let cool completely.
Once opened, you can keep  Pears in Whisky Syrup 3 weeks to a month in the refrigerator. Serve them warm or cold with yogurt, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream or Whisky Ice Cream…
