Watercolor Villages Galore!

Such imagination in the Saturday Whimsical Watercolors 1 Class I can’t even wrap my head around it!

These photos represent a smattering of the fabulous and imaginative paintings that came out of class last week! The colors, doodles, collage, words and details are absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD!!

This past Saturday we worked on using less paint and more water for a less saturated look. We also worked on learning how to paint different mushrooms and how to create adorable collage characters to add to our work. It’s always a lot of fun in this class, filled with painting, tunes and lots of laughs!

Finnish literary history on Cape Ann

On Tuesday, July 23, from 3 to 5 p.m., the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan St., will host professor Kirsti Salmi-Niklander of the University of Helsinki discussing newly-discovered materials in the Finnish-American literary history of Lanesville and Rockport, where Finns shared books, newspapers, political broadsheets, poems, and songbooks in Finnish. Salmi-Niklander’s research has uncovered the 1903-1925 issues of the hand-written newspaper Walotar, which would have been read aloud at meetings of the Salon Leimu Temperance Society in Rockport. Also found: an 1899 children’s primary reader and other books reflecting strong ties to Finland and evolving assimilation in America, including the development of “Finglish.” Those in attendance are welcome to bring similar materials they might have. Traditional afternoon coffee and Nisu will be served.

Finns Celebrate Heritage

On Sunday, July 21, at 7 p.m., guest conductor Paul Niemisto will raise his baton at the bandstand at Back Beach to lead Rockport’s community band and guest musicians in a free, outdoor program of Finnish-American music. Sure to evoke nostalgia among Cape Ann’s Finnish-Americans, the concert is a rare opportunity for this now assimilated group to unite in a demonstration of their presence on Cape Ann and to celebrate their heritage. The band pays tribute to its 32 charter members, and gives thanks to the immigrant generation. Come early with family, friends, blankets, chairs and kanteles to picnic seaside ahead of the concert. Lobster Fest

Gloucester Legion’s second lobster fest gets steaming on Saturday, July 20, from 1 to 6 p.m. at American Legion, 8 Washington St. Ticket includes one fresh cooked lobster, unlimited clam chowder, corn on the cob, salad, bread and watermelon. Legion volunteers will provide service throughout the meal, with open seating and full bar. All proceeds benefit Legion’s holiday meals programs for seniors and veterans. $25 for full dinner. Sargent House recreates 1919 exhibit

The Sargent House Museum’s 100th anniversary brings together more than 25 works by John Singer Sargent, Theresa Bernstein, Childe Hassam and others from Saturday, July 13, to Sunday, Sept. 1, at the historic 1782 house’s new gallery at 42 Middle St. The exhibit is a recreation of the 1919 show that launched the museum, has as its centerpiece a portrait by John Singer Sargent of his cousin Charles Sprague Sargent, the Harvard botanist who co-founded the Sargent House Museum. Period costumes will evoke the era. As part of a centenary collaboration, the Sargent House and Cape Ann museums will partner on a variety of exhibits, lectures and events, including the display at Cape Ann Museym of a large portrait of Judith Sargent Murray by John Singleton Copley, on loan from the Terra Foundation in Chicago. Concerts on Meetinghouse Green

The fourth season of free Friday evening concerts on Meetinghouse Green is underway. The concerts run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on the shaded green of the historical Unitarian Universalist Church, corner of Middle and Church streets, in Gloucester. This Friday, July 12, hear classic rock ‘n’ roll from the North Shore-based band Livin’ On Luck. Bring blanket or lawn chair. Youth Acting Workshop

Classes start Friday, July 12, at the Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop. A professional theater training program for ages 5 to 18, the workshop runs Fridays, July 12 to Aug. 16, providing a chance to develop self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills for daily life as well as the theater. Workshops cover theater basics, improvisation, movement, vocal and physical expression, character preparation, scene study, storytelling, writing and public speaking. Solo shows at North Shore Arts

The North Shore Arts Association is presenting two new solo shows by Faripour Forouhar of Avon, Connecticut, and Helene Pierce of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. ’39 Steps’ at Gloucester Stage

Patrick Barlow’s witty mystery “The 39 Steps” will be on stage through July 28 at Gloucester Stage Company, 267 E. Main St., Gloucester. This award-winning comic thriller adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 movie by Alfred Hitchcock, has played in more than 40 countries, winning Olivier (United Kingdom); Helpmann (Australia); Moliere (France) and Tony Awards. Page2Stage, a new collaboration between the Sawyer Free Library and the Gloucester Stage Theatre, is Thursday, July 11. The group will meet for the first time pre-show at 5:45 p.m. at the Gloucester Stage Theatre to discuss “The 39 Steps” by John Buchan. In this pre-show discussion of theater performances, participants explore the play’s subject through facilitated discussion of related content, including biographies and novels. The next program is Thursday, Aug. 8, and includes readings from Ben Butler’s autobiography and a presentation of Ben Butler. All books will be available at the library. Aquarium summer passes

The Sawyer Free Library has received summer passes for the New England Aquarium, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Generally, the library only offers passes from September to June. But these special summer passes, which allows for a 50% discount on admission, are dated for the months of July and August. The passes and can be found on the “Reserve a Pass” link on the library’s website.

A ‘life in pieces’

The Cape Ann Museum presents “My Life in Pieces: Painting with Stuff,” the first public exhibition of Rockport mixed media artist Stephanie Cole’s sculptural and eclectic collection. A Connecticut native, Cole studied at California College of Arts and Crafts and later at the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. In the mid-1960s, she and her husband settled in Rockport where Cole taught art in the Rockport Elementary School and her work evolved into intricate multimedia mosaics she called “memory sculptures.” The works are on view through July 7.

Gloucester400 design competition

Organizers of Gloucester’s 400th anniversary celebration are holding an international commemorative medal design competition open to amateur and professional designers. Commemorative medals are a time-honored part of Gloucester’s historic celebrations. The competition is accepting entries for Phase I. Designers must upload their original sketches to GloucesterMA400.com by Aug. 31, after which three semifinalists will be selected and receive a cash award of $3,000. In Phase II, the semifinalists’ designs, submitted as three-dimensional plaster models, closes on Dec. 1. The final winner will be announced in February 2020. Watercolor Class Show and Tell

Another great week in our whimsical watercolors 1 class! We worked on various techniques such as salt, alcohol, wax paper, wax resist, plastic wrap, glazing and bubble wrap to create lovely and interesting textures in our pieces.

Both students hit this project right out of the park!

And we all agreed that once you add in the black pen outlines, it really makes the piece “pop” with personality!

Next week we will be building villages and towns two different ways!

Watercolor Cities Two Ways in Whimsical Watercolors 2!

Back into the studio we went this past weekend to enjoy watercolors in Whimsical Watercolors 2!

Our show and share this week was fabulous once again, with watercolor cities painted in two different ways. Our first project was working intuitively and creating a village landscape using the colors that we inadvertently had on our paper by sketching out and doodling buildings . It’s a super fun project because you just don’t know what you’re going to end up with!

Our second project was a little more involved, using found papers and objects to add to the base of our painted piece. The ephemera that we used for the base helped us get a “color story” together. This helped us by making it easier to choose our paint colors for the upper portion of the page. Using found papers, buttons, stickers, pieces of fabric, we collaged these pieces together for the bottom portion of our pages, making them unique and interesting!

Intuitive Watercolors for the Win in Whimsical Watercolors 2!

Another fabulous weekend of whimsical watercolor 2, creating Intuitive Watercolors. We lay down our colors (a 2 color palette) and then, like a Rorschach test, find what each of the images look like and draw them. Let’s take a look at some of the wonderful examples that were created:

Using a 2 color palette for each of our paintings, we worked together to see which ones we enjoyed, which ones we didn’t and what we could create out of each of the paintings. Watercolor does what it wants to do, so oftentimes, you can have to really use your imagination to create something that appears from the way the colors work together. You work “intuitively” to find little treasures in the watercolor pools and puddles.

We had such a wonderful time working in this fashion and created so many different combinations and color stories as well as doodles and ideas that we can carry through to other future paintings!

Final Watercolor Class Show and Share!

Our final Whimsical Watercolor class occurred on Sunday and we had so much fun, it was ridiculous! So much laughter and happiness while getting creative, makes the walls of the art studio sing with delight!

We wrapped up with a “show and share” of mandalas and all the different designs you are able to create. Not one was alike! And talk about so much color and vibrancy!

After our show and share, we decided to take the rest of the time creating colorful birds and envelopes from our scrap stash. Talk about a great time! We went through all of our scraps, both collected and hand painted from previous projects, and constructed adorable collaged little birds to decorate oragami envelopes. A great way to use up what we had in our stash, while making something super productive and useful. We were figuring that we could use these envelopes as gift card holders, treat holders, decor in our creative spaces, journals and all sorts of uses!

I’d love to share a photo with you but considering I didn’t take any because I was crying laughing the entire time, I’m sure you understand!

For some bonus fun that was completely over the top, I created a few little animal themed paper dolls, which totally creeped everyone out (in the most hilarious way!) Think “Flat Stanley” but with sheep and deer in dresses!

Another week in the books for our Whimsical Watercolor 1 Saturday class and once again, MD has blown my mind with her “take it and run with it” attitude.

We learned about various types of household items that can be used as interesting technique tools to use with our watercolors to achieve interesting effects. Class started off with creating a sheet of various techniques that showed us samples of the results and then we worked on a beautiful watercolor landscape.

I’m so so proud of MD and her constant pursuit of creativity! It’s so thrilling and exciting to see how much she enjoys each project and watch her weekly transformation as she gains more confidence and artistic freedom!

Saturday Whimsical Watercolor 1 Class - BOOM!

I can’t stand it. Really, I can’t!

Look at these gorgeous paintings that my Saturday class has produced for “homework” during the week between class meetings. I can’t even stand the awesomeness!!! Couldn’t be prouder of MDs work and constant push to continue the watercolor journey in Whimsical Watercolors 1.

This week we worked on a fun project where we created a swatch sheet of various types of techniques, such as salt, deli paper, bubble wrap and other household items. It’s always such an exciting thing to see what each technique will do with the watercolor.

Single Line Watercolor Paintings NEW ONLINE CLASS!

Join in the stress-free and colorful watercolor class that will have you creating lovely and loose watercolor paintings using a few basic supplies!

Show and Tell from the Glimmerbug Art Studio

Fridays are so much fun with our Whimsical Watercolor 2 class and we’ve been enjoying some creative, fun and challenging projects. This class is the second in the watercolor series of classes that I offer at my home art studio in Harvard. We began this session a few weeks ago and have been exploring new techniques and larger scale projects, including paper piecing and drawing.

If I had to think of one word to describe this class, it would be “Imaginative.”

We’ve been working on larger and more complicated and intense projects that have pushed our limits with creativity and imagination. And as you can see from the painting below, has turned into a spectacular watercolor piece!

This particular student has completely NAILED it with thinking “outside of the box” when it came to finding places to sketch their landscape, buildings, trees and pathways. When she left class last week, this painting was started but definitely not finished. She had the beginnings down and then worked on it throughout the week, only to show up the next week with this masterpiece! I am so impressed with how she saw areas that could be pathways, buildings, a tunnel and fences! Spectacular!

Each week in this class, we work on two or so projects so that we are constantly working. If we don’t finish, we take it home to continue working on it until we meet again. It keeps things light and stress-free, so students don’t feel rushed and worked up about getting it all done in one sitting. I actually encourage my students to walk away and come back to a project with fresh eyes. It oftentimes keeps things easier to handle and you don’t get burnt out!

Whimsical Watercolors 1 Has My Mind Blown!

I am out of my mind proud!!!

Saturday was our third class for Whimsical Watercolors 1 and my student shows up with a stack… and I mean a STACK… of paintings and doodles that she worked on during the week after we met for class 2.

Blown away and freaking out, party of one!

Look at the AWESOMENESS of all she created! I love how this lesson really got her imagination unlocked and the creativity flowing out of her! Gorgeous, imaginative and inspiring! Well done! She (and all my art students for that matter) make me LOVE what I do!

We meet weekly, work on a few new techniques and projects and then take home some pieces to finish up. We then share what we worked on that week in the following class. It’s a great way for us to encourage and inspire each other and keep the creativity and excitement moving in class!

I look forward to my classes with these wonderful ladies each week. They keep me inspired to create and learn and have fun doing art!

Whimsical Watercolors 2 Class Progress

I couldn’t be more proud! Look at the gorgeous work by my fabulous Whimsical Watercolor 2 students! I’d say this is a grand slam!!! Watching the progression since our very first class together 14 weeks ago to this is just stunning and stellar!

In Whimsical Watercolors 2, we’ve been continuing our work using various techniques and really getting a handle on our doodling practices. Painting and sketching loosely from day one has gotten us to this stage and I am beyond words to see where we started and where we are now!

It’s incredible to watch the process from, “I can’t doodle and I don’t have the imagination,” to “I’m painting and drawing underwater quirky scenes and loose landscapes with no problem!” It’s so satisfying to me to watch their progression and I’m so so proud of all of the ladies that have participated in my classes these last few months!

Single Line Contour Drawing Watercolor Class Success!

This past Tuesday in our watercolor class, we had a blast creating all sorts of watercolor paintings using the single line drawing method (nobody broke the rule of lifting up their pen!) and then adding color.

At the beginning of class, we worked in small handmade sketchbooks that I made for each of the ladies. We worked on practicing our penwork and by keeping our pen moving and on the paper at all times. It also gave them the opportunity to be able to sort out what kinds of themes they would enjoy drawing.

We had quite a range of topics!

A lot of botanicals and plants as well as butterflies, bumblebees and little villages were what came out of our class at the end of the evening!

After our doodled drawings were completed, we began adding watercolors and really “waking up” the paintings by adding color to only the negative spaces in the paintings.

And then the magic of the alcohol and sea salt came into play!

Each time we added these elements to our paintings, it was so exciting! The transformation from just watercolor to wow was incredible!

Next week is our last official meetup for our 5 week class. I’m going to miss these ladies! What a great time we’ve had together. I’ll be looking forward to our paths crossing again!
