Although the method of calculating a water tariff is based on the common principle, the water tariff levels vary widely. In some countries, such as Turkmenistan, drinking water is provided free of charge to the population, and on the other hand, in developed countries, for example in Denmark, the cost of drinking water can reach nearly $12 per cubic meter. What are the reasons for this difference? Our research shows that high tariffs on water supply are characteristic mainly for developed countries, while low tariffs are for developing countries. Thus, the economic factors play a significant role in water pricing, and the value of water as a natural resource is not considered.
