Per the CBA for retirement games it’s at least 100 caps and two major tournaments. Sam has WC19 and Tokyo2021 but not 100 caps. So I’m not expecting her to have a retirement game like Krieger did unfortunately.

What about 1 million games in our hearts though? that should be enough.

Dude- she wouldn’t even have gotten a medal if they’d won. Completely disingenuous on her part to call herself an “Olympian”. And let’s not forget she was passed over for the Tokyo oly in place of Jane Campbell as the 3rd keeper. She wasn’t even given a real look by Vlatko after having been on the team for WC19. She won’t ever admit- she was a mediocre/second best keeper her whole career.

Yup! She was never starter material or caliber. Like I do admit she had some bad luck but at the end of the day she was just never good enough

there's an opt out clause in 2025 that the players are likely to take, so theyll likely be back with a new one for 2026. I think what gets lost in the cba discussion is that they were starting from sub zero and the negotiations took place over 2018-2019. Its icky and full of issues but its a building block that they're already pushing up against. I just don't think anyone expected womens sports to rocket so high so quickly. There's been exponential growth since WC19 and I don't think that was planned for 😅

No exactly, it’s very easy for me or anyone else to look at the cba from a 2024 perspective and pick out all these problems and say I can’t believe they agreed to this, but you do have to look at where things were when it was negotiated

Obviously the 2019 WC was a tipping point in women’s sports but I personally think the wubble was the tipping point in the wnba, I think that’s when a lot of eyes shifted to the wnba and it was in my opinion ppl who weren’t wnba fans or even necessarily basketball fans but were sports fan suddenly dealing with there being no sports at all and then being willing to just watch the first ones that come back and then getting really into it, so obviously no one could’ve predicted that or the growth of the wnba back in 2018/2019 like you said, so I can definitely see why all these points were agreed to, I do think the players will opt out in 2025 and go into negotiations with more understanding of what things look like and what they can ask for, I think they not necessarily just took what they were given but I think they didn’t fight as hard on certain aspects just because like you said they didn’t have much to go on, and now that they do I definitely think they’ll push harder for certain things (or at least I hope they will)

You’re so right for bringing up that I’m looking at things from a 2024 perspective that’s on me for not mentioning that myself, I can be disappointed in certain concessions players made with the cba while also recognizing that it was a completely different playing field back then

I think the FFF really fumbled it after the wc19, they could've definitely used that moment to achieve international popularity by doing work to be more accessible around the world and bettering the conditions in the D1 so players wanted to come but instead they did nothing and other teams got immensely popular while France stayed behind. Diacre probably did not help as well because the vibes looked rancid.

And then because of OL people thought PSG was useless since they're always in their shadow (which I don't agree with, I think the "classique" is a very good game almost every time). And no one liked OL because they always win so the french league was deemed boring

(I want to say something about how the diversity in the french and PSG teams maybe also affects their popularity with the very white wish community but I don't want to attract discourse in your inbox)

oh i definitely think that a lot of it has to do with psg/the french league having a lot more poc! because like spain has been in a similar situation with their federation not taking advantage of the boom in the women's game after the 2019 wc and the popularity for the national team/barça has increased a lot more than it has for france/lyon/psg. it's not even just because barça has been so dominant because lyon still has won two champions league since then. and barça the last few years has had the type of dominance lyon has had in their leagues but people don't ignore/downplay their players the way they sometimes do with lyon. like some of the most popular players in the women's game are barça players.

yeah, like yes, psg does often lose to lyon, but people forget that literally everyone in europe has been losing to lyon lol. wolfsburg and barça are two of the teams that were supposed to challenge lyon in the last few years and they both always lose to them. doesn't make them bad teams just like it doesn't make psg a bad team.

I can't believe we've actually won it. The fans who joined after the euros and the fans (like me) who joined after the WC19 have seen us win the same number of trophies but I'm glad we got one, I was beginning to think I was jinxing them

yeah same, its always been just one game keeping us away from trophies and now we got it.

yeah she would for sure go to a club that she’s guaranteed to win trophies at, otherwise she would stay at arsenal to try to win trophies. (also low-key think somewhere her dad has hidden in a vault a photo of leah in the spurs kit he made her wear)

like i get millie has been overlooked sometimes, but that’s not leahs fault nor does that reflect on the recognition she’s getting. she’s one of the best ball-playing centre backs!

and i’m not sure what the interview is (i wanna say wc19) but there’s an interview with her mum and a reporter and her mum tells that story! if you go onto getty images and search leah williamson under videos it should come up!

yeah 100% it wouldn’t make sense to transfer to a club that’s doing the same thing you’re moving away from. plus, i think she’d need that guarantee of a trophy to even sway her from arsenal.

and yeah i don’t get why people seem to blame leah for millie being ‘overlooked’. leah deserves the recognition she gets (which has only been somewhat recent, despite the fact she’s been one of the best CBs for years now). and her receiving recognition has nothing to do with millie, it’s about her own abilities as a player.

honestly tho, i don’t think millie is actually that overlooked. she was nominated for the ballon d’or, commentators and pundits constantly talk about her (a lot more than other players), has been included in fifa world xi and more.

(i mean, leah wasn’t nominated for ballon d’or and millie was, yet people still say her recognition is causing millie to be overlooked??)
