In 1969 Bill Clifton released Wanderin’.  Here are the record notes from the back cover...
‘Dynamic’, ‘exciting’, ‘revolutionary’—what a relief not to have to use these overused words in describing this record!  All the phoney atmosphere, so common even on so-called ‘live recordings’ these days, is absent. When you listen to this album you'll feel just another member of a small group of friends gathered round of an evening to hear a song and a word or two from one of their number.  To be sure, Bill Clifton is a fine folk-singer and an excellent guitarist and autoharp-player, but his approach is so honest and casual that you feel right at home with him from the start, and you go away better-informed to boot.
This record brought special pleasure for me, because Bill and I were room-mates in boarding school some twenty years ago. As a matter of fact, Bill was the first person to get me interested in hillbilly music, and he even taught me how to play the guitar (have to admit I could use a few more lessons these days!). Already in those days his main influences were the Carter Family and Woody Guthrie, both of whom are discussed and well-represented on this album.
Bill was born on April 5th, 1931, in Riderwood, Maryland. He grew up there, and when l met him in about 1947, his main interests were weight-lifting and hillbilly music. l think he only put up with formal education as more or less necessary evil, because I'm sure he already had his heart set on singing that long ago. He did go on to college after boarding school, to the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville. I last saw him there in about 1950 or 51, and he was busy singing on the radio in addition to his studies.
‘After service in the Marines, Bill continued his singing career in earnest.  He has worked at radio stations WINA and WBLT in Charlottesville and WCOD and WXGI in Richmond, Virginia, WBAL and WBMD in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as a long stint in 1953-54 with the 'WWVA Jamboree’ in Wheeling, West Virginia. In 1963 he started the ‘Dixie Mountain Boys’ and is also one of the founders of the famed Newport Folk Festival.
He has recorded for the Blue Ridge, App, Mercury, Nashville and Starday labels in the US and the Decca, London, Melodisc, Mercury And Fontana Labels In England, and was chosen the “Most Promising male Artist” by Cashbox Magazine in 1959 and No 1 Bluegrass Artist In England in 1963.  He has also been active as a composer:”lonely Heart Blues”, “When Autumn Leaves Begin To Fall”, and “Springhill Disaster” to name a few.
In the 1960’s Bill moved with the whole family to England.  From there he undertook several continental tours, during one of which these recordings were made.  In 1967 he joined the US Peace Corps and was sent to Zamboagan City on Mindanao In the Philippines, Where his is at this writing.
Let me be the first to wish each listener a really enjoyable and intimate evening with Bill Clifton via this disc.  You’ll fine everything including old favorites plus new information, and all if it peppered with liberal portions of humor and warmth, and I think you’ll want to come back for more.
This is another package donated by one of the biggest bluegrass collectors in the world.  Thanks for sharing this gem.

Post-AGT Appearance 940: Kevin Matthews WCOD 106.1 FM July 25
I’ve never thought much about the videos that would accompany these songs, but I can only assume anything Beyonce endorsed would have made the top 10 of the 21st century announced Tuesday.  I visualize a giant statue of Avonelle rising from the sand while moving statues of Destiny’s Child also arise and dance around it.  I would have approved, suggesting only that someone push over a statue of Dr. Rowley.  That would not go on the video.  Vote for Av, dominated by the Avonellies dancing in appropriate costumes might make the list, and possibly the John Williams Medley (featuring Avonelle in costumes from Fiddler on the Roof, Lost in Space, Star Wars and Superman) might have made the top 100.  The Hectors would stop speaking to me for a while after that but accept all checks to Is there not a Cause.  My agent would tell me to quickly make a brief reaction to the honor and it would be aired first by the small Cape Cod station WCOD fm 106.1 on Wednesday afternoon on the Kevin Matthews Show.
Matthews: That was Her name is Avonelle, a hit song still burning up the chart, and one of the top 10 videos of the 21st Century according to the latest Billboard list.  It was sung by Destiny’s Child but written and conceived by entertainer Phil Cole.  Phil had this to say about being named to the top 10 videos of the century.
PBC: This is a great honor, but I had little to do with the video.
Matthews: Phil is always proud of his humility.
