For further proof of your Cody theory in his biography he says the reason he would partecipate in Total Drama Island is wanting to "swing with the cool kids" and like UGHHHHH he wants love he's desperate 💀 he's just like me fr
Thanks for the ask. And yeah, I have read his bio. He thinks he's cool/desperately wants to be cool. The bio is so mean-spirited lmao, they keep making fun of him.
Although I agree he wants love, I'm not sure if that's all he wants. I don't think Cody took pictures of Gwen sleeping in a bikini because he wanted love, after all.
And that's kinda why, despite loving Cody, I also kinda hate him. Not just for that one moment, though. He wants love, yes, but he also wants attention and status, and also power. And he's willing to do annoy people to death to get it. I don't think he knows he's annoying, or if he does, that he doesn't really care. The guy's a little entitled.
And this is where I start bashing Cody, sorta.
TDI Cody is sort of a mess. He's attracted to Gwen from the first episode, which tbh is fine. The first thing he does is compliment her awkwardly, which is again. Fine. But he's also in the girl's side of the cabin. He's in her space without asking. And I'm not saying he was a danger, or even that I'm pro gender-separation in cabins. But he’s still in a place he shouldn’t be.
And this continues. She's writing in her diary, and he sits right next to her. He tries to read over his shoulder, she tells him to leave. He doesn't. He sniffs her hair.
Not only is he crossing boundaries, but he's refusing to respect him.
And he just does that a LOT. She's about to go hang out with Trent and he slings an arm around her shoulder and effectively prevents her. He tries to look through the door while she's changing. He asks her out and doesn't listen when she rejects him. And yeah in my other point I said this was a sign of perseverance, and even something sad. And that's true. But it's also a sign that he's sort of a man-child.
Like a kid begging his parents for the new PS4. They say no, but he just keeps asking and asking. Except it's not a PS4 he's asking for, but a girl. Can you see the problem?
He tells her that he's made a bet with Owen about her BRA. :(
But hey, you may be saying. He changed! He hooks Gwen up with Trent, just to make her happy! And he does, that VERY episode when he was asking her out, suddenly he changes his mind and gets her with Trent. And he doesn't bother her again! (until World Tour that is)
So surely, he's redeemed himself. Eh. I don't think so.
He gets Gwen with Trent because he realizes she likes someone else, right? He puts her feelings first. But why the fuck couldn't he have done that EARLIER? If it was really about her happiness, wouldn't he have backed away the first time? If it was about her happiness, wouldn't he have accepted her rejections?
And the answer is that has nothing to do with her. It has everything to do with Trent. He stepped away as soon as another man was involved. Ask yourself this... if Trent didn't exist in TDI, and Gwen didn't like ANY man. Then... would Cody ever stop?
No. (And he doesn’t stop when she likes Duncan, either. It has to be a guy he approves of.)
Also, something worth pointing out is that Cody already KNEW she liked someone else. He didn't know it was Trent until episode 8, but as early as episode 5, when Heather reads out Gwen's diary and exposes that she has a crush on "a guy who plays guitar." Cody's THERE in the audience. He even remarks 'I don't play guitar.'
He knows it's not about him. And in the heterosexual monogamous world of TD, there's no way she also likes Cody. So Cody should have quit right then. But he doesn't. Because hey, just because a girl says she doesn't like you and that she likes someone else doesn't mean that she can't change her mind.
It's only when he realizes it's Trent, tall cool guy Trent, that he backs off. It's like it took an Alpha Male for Cody to realize he was a beta who had no chance. Lmao.
And that's shitty. I don't take Cody getting Gwen&Trent together as a sign of redemption. Because the problem was not that he was stopping the two. The problem was that he was an annoying guy who doesn't know how to act around pretty girls. At the end of TDI, there's no sense that Cody has *truly* changed imo. He doesn't apologize, he never reflects on him being an annoying person. He still has Gwen's bra.
And you may think I'm just one of those people who need the message spelled out for him.
But I'm right! Because in World Tour, now that Trent the one guy in his way is GONE, Cody wastes no time hitting on her. Because he never saw a problem with it.
A lot of people say Cody should have learned from Sierra. And I agree, it would have been a great moment. But he didn't. And I don't think that's bad either. Sometimes terrible situations make characters regress. And it makes sense, in a way. If he did something weird, he could think "well, Sierra's worse." And when Sierra took away his control, Cody could try to find agency in controlling someone else. It's like the cycle of abuse. Sometimes the abused person doesn't get better. They just normalize it or lash out in the exact same way the person who abused them did.
Which is why I find Cody so interesting. He's a bad person, he's a sad person, and he's also a good person.
I even like his story in TD, even though I just critiqued it. It feels like a psychological thriller. Cody, the loser who doesn’t want to be a loser, the guy without love or status or power creeps on a girl, hoping to ask her out enough times that finally she gives in. But she doesn't. She has a boyfriend, she has a friend, she has love, and status, and power. So she doesn't. She wins the whole damn competition.
A year later, Cody tries again. She’s lost her boyfriend, the competition’s barely started, and her friend’s on another team. But then he gets interrupted by a person worse than him. A girl with no love no status but all the power she needs. She doesn't ask him out, she declares that they're married. She doesn’t apologize and try again, she cries until he pays attention to her. She doesn’t make a bet on his undergarments, she just takes them. Every step of the way, she’s his dark reflection.
And it works. Because Cody doesn't have anyone else. There’s no support system. And when he's in the desert when Alejandro and Heather are gone and Chris and Chef are in a helicopter and *gone*, and everyone is GONE and he's all alone, except for Her. That’s when he makes a deal.
In the end, Cody is the one who gives in.
It's kind of poetic. I don’t know if the TD writers intended to be seen like that, but they definitely got a kick out of the creep getting stuck with a worse creep. It’s like a scary bedtime story parents tell children to make them behave. And then in Pakhitew, they have Dave get the ultimate punishment for trying to get too close to a girl who doesn’t like him.
I just think that’s neat.
