Bloodwork: Yanking a Bandaid
Here’s the header!
Bloodwork is frustrating me. I was going to do a whole thing on a combinatoric map of the game, here, for the way the card skeleton needs to work but then the rest of this talking about the art prototype problem kinda overwhelmed my thinking.
An Old Anecdote And A New Problem
At the stage I’m at in Bloodwork’s development, what I want to be doing is making a playable prototype that I can hand to my PhD supervisor and say ‘here is a completed game-playable entity that you can play without my direct supervision.’ Part of that involves
A long time ago, I sat next to I think, Stephen Medway, the developer of Blood on the Clocktower, at a small indie convention talking about game making. In that, I was forwarding my normal position of game development – make something, make anything, make it with the lightest and fastest opportunities you can, get something you can play with and then you can make it better. Medway, again I assume because I forgot the guy’s name, I just remember him talking about his game Blood on the Clocktower as his example, talked about how actually, his position was that games you show to people should be as polished as you can, that you should always present games in prototype form to people as if you took the product seriously.
At the time I was a bit annoyed because I felt like it was talking past me but also, chances are, I was just not understanding or appreciating what he was focusing on versus what I was focusing on. My take, as almost always, is trying to get people who have that idea, that want, to start making games, to be the first members of an audience. For me, starting making my first game was a matter of realising I needed to actually do it, and I’m always thinking about that anxiety. What counts as done? What can I share? And that degree of certainty, that desire to have completed, finished things, was my biggest barrier to get over. I needed – essentially – two university subjects to get there!
It’s weird to also consider just how meh I feel about Blood on the Clocktower in light of that anecdote. I don’t think I’m annoyed at the game because of it. I think that the game does things I dislike as a designer, and the philosophy of one person at a convention years ago isn’t actually important. I think that. I think that but I also am very good at convincing myself of things. Like I’m also not particularly excited by Monikers, or One Night Werewolf, but my criticisms in my own mind of those two games can be linked to specific mechanics, which… again, I can bring to bear on Blood on the Clocktower. And that position from again, I am pretty sure Medway, of make something with some polish (my words simplifying his words), is where I need to be next. When the game has substance I can start applying detail to that substance.
The Leviathan
The point of this is the consideration of the steps that follow after the first ones. Getting a game made enough to show someone, that I have done. Getting a play loop in front of someone so they can see the way that a core design experience iterates, that I have done. The progress of making a Bloodwork alpha model that looks like a game that a stranger could engage with is the next place, and that starts giving me ideas about the ways to express art in front of me.
And now…
deep breath.
My PhD Supervisor is a big advocate for generative tools (“AI Tools”), like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. He presents them as a useful tool that makes an enormous variety of things that are normally so time consuming as to be outside of our ability to do basically immediate, and he has a whole academic experience of the position of the legal disposition of the tools’ application.
These tools, to me, stand as a type of tool that can do impressive and complicated things and speed up processes I’m familiar with. I use one of them, a free use website that I’ve linked to in the past (dezgo) for random art for things like background images for RPGs, or quickly whipping up character art for unimportant situations. I’ve used it in a tangential way for shirt design stuff – like, hey, Dezgo, generate me a beer label, so I can use a generic beer label as an example to draw my own version off. These tools, to me, don’t feel like inherent evils – they feel like tools that need to be considered carefully, regulated, and publically disclosed.
Here’s the other thing, and this is where the bandaid ripping starts to sting: Regardless of how I personally may or may not feel about these tools, I would rather not use them for any publically presented work that represents me as a game designer. Why? What’s my rationale there?
Well, simplest and most basic thing: I don’t want my friends to yell at me. I don’t think they’re likely to, I think people would see my position as reasonable (using generative media as ‘sketch art’ as a step is a valid use of the tools just like clipart or screencaps). But I do think that there are people in the industry with access to money and power, who are in positions to do things like use their existing corpus of paid-for-art and cut out artists from their future development, and that stuff being normalised represents a real problem. If I, someone communicating about game design, trying to encourage more people to do things, do this thing, it might normalise these tools to other people, in a time when the normalisation of this toolset is a potential problem.
There’s more to it – there’s actual political considerations about the largesse of these tools, the availability of them, the corpus they draw from, things I would just rather not be involved in… these tools are right now, cute toys. I don’t want to get heavily entrenched with these tools for this element of my work, and I say that as someone who has taught students how to engage with them.
What Then?
Well, the thing that these tools offer me, really, is giant supplies of similar-but-not-the-same non-final sketch-value art. From where I sit, what I’d love is to be able to use art that can be the final art for a cheap version of the game, or have explicitly sketchy art for an interim version of the game. Using a generator to make a lot of art is super challenging for me with my current setup, since I don’t have one installed, I’d be sending requests to a website with a timer — and I mean, I’m talking about a big pile of art! — and that means what I want to do, the thing I really want to route around is my lack of inspiration and my lack of time.
I’m going to look for art bundles on itch and artstation. If I can find a big bundle of vampire art on those sources, I’ll probably grab it and use it as the ‘sketch’ art for the game prototype.

Forest Glamp, Petite-Rivière-Saint-François

Forest Glamp, Petite-Rivière-Saint-François
21 Sep 2021
Design: Bourgeois / Lechasseur architectes
Location: Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, Nova Scotia, Canada
Forest Glamp, Petite-Rivière-Saint-François
Meters away from some of Québec’s most spectacular landscapes is an unusual new glamping project. Reflection is the work of Québec-based Bourgeois Lechasseur / architects, who have developed a highly versatile approach to get-away rentals. They first experimented with the luxurious Charlevoix Domes, followed by the slightly nostalgic Cabin A. Reflection, their latest endeavor, is a set of two resolutely contemporary cabins in the woods.
The identical Forest Glamp units were built on a flat piece of land close to one of Québec’s most popular ski resorts, Massif Petite-Rivière-Saint-François. The challenge for the architects was to engage guests in an intimate relationship with nature, rather than dazzle them with the overwhelming views nearby. Key to the design was a focus on creating accommodations that would almost disappear among the trees.
The shared arrival and parking area is accessible through an unpaved road, connected to local hiking trails. To ensure maximum privacy for guests, the two minimalist cabins were built back-to-back, fifty meters from each other, one facing east and the other one facing west. Their most striking feature is a totally glazed façade, set against the forest backdrop. Darkened wooden slats clad the other three façades, reinforcing the sense of immersion among the nearby trees.
The entrances, off to the side of each cabin, appear to have been pushed inwards, interrupting the otherwise mostly seamless façades. The move is typical of Bourgeois / Lechasseur architects, who clearly enjoy blurring the lines between exteriors and interiors.
The dark wood cladding used outside appears to carry though the interior along the entire length of the living area, while the clear pine ceiling used throughout the units is replicated outside. Designed for up to six persons, each cabin features a cozy living/dining area with fireplace, as well as two enclosed bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom. Guests can also enjoy the relaxing environment of an exterior spa.
Prefabrication In this latest project, the architects opted to experiment with prefabrication. Each of the twin units consists of two modules, prefabricated before being shipped to the site to be assembled. Although the process was meant to be relatively straightforward, it led to unexpected challenges, among them a variety of mechanical connections between the modules. Meticulous site coordination was required during final assembly. Two operations, however, had to take place on location: the pouring of the radiant concrete slab, and installation of the long, reflective glass walls.
Considerable attention was paid to the treatment of the mirror façades in an effort to prevent hazardous bird collisions. Client-driven research led to a product approved by the well-known Audubon Society, as well as several other bird conservancy associations. Almost invisible to the human eye, bird deterrent window markers were carefully installed on the outside of the glass panes that line the living area.
A nostalgic yearning for nature resides deep in the minds of many Canadians, often conceived as rustic log cabins tucked away in the woods. Today’s travelers, however, seek comfort and poetry, something Reflection will also provide as guests immerse themselves in the surrounding forest.

About Bourgeois / Lechasseur architects Since its founding in 2011, the Québec firm, Bourgeois / Lechasseur architects, has been attracting attention to its carefully crafted public and private commissions. The architects’ fascination for Québec’s majestic landscapes, and for the dramatic cliffs of the Magdalen Islands, have led them on a perpetual search for innovative solutions, while never losing sight of their roots.
The firm’s work was met with widespread acclaim for Est-Nord-Est, an international artist residence located 100 kilometers east of Québec City. Bourgeois / Lechasseur architects have built several projects in the magnificent Charlevoix region, one of Québec’s most compelling tourist destinations. The firm was recently engaged by a US developer to work on a unique set of cottages to be built a short distance away from the legendary Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Plastering kent
Located about 50km away from the city of London, Rochester, Kent is set atop the River Medway, which allows for some great sights and many activities. As a historic town, the area is not only charming to visit and tour, but it also offers plenty of tourist attractions set against a traditional and very British background, make it even more attractive to those looking for a potential holiday location. From shopping at the small boutique shops to touring the famous Norman Rochester Castle there is plenty to do in the area to keep you busy throughout your holiday.
The area surrounding Rochester is also filled with plenty to do, as Kent is one of the main tourist regions of the Southeast corner of Britain. With this in mind you will have a wide choice of lodgings including top range hotels and motels.
For a look back into the history of the Rochester area the Watts Charity Museum and Guildhall Museum are great places to start given that they are conveniently located next door to each other. The Watts Charity Museum is the inspiration for Dickens' short story the 'Six Poor Travellers House' and the Guildhall Museum offers a look back into the area which dates back into Roman times. The ceilings of the Guildhall are also worth a close look given they are beautifully created plaster ceilings that were donated by an Admiral back in 1695.
Another notable attraction in Rochester is the Rochester Cathedral, which has been a religious base since 604 AD when the Saxons first erected a cathedral on the same site. According to legend, the cathedral burnt down in the 12th century, ravaged in the 13th century, and damaged in the 17th century by Cromwell's soldiers, but despite the test of time has always been rebuilt and today the result is a nice fusion of many centuries of architectural design which contains everything from the Norman Cathedral archways to narrow Gothic arches to modern features of the 20th century.
While visiting the Cathedral take a Looking for a cheap plasterer in Kent? minute to cross the street and visit the Rochester Castle, which was built during the Norman period and is so impressive that Charles Dickens once announced that he wished to be buried within the castle grounds. Although some of the castle has fallen into disrepair due to different battles that took place in the area, today there is a still a large intact spiral staircase that allows you to reach the top of the castle and look out over the city walls of Rochester, which is a view well worth the four pound admission fee.
Most people who holiday in the Rochester area choose to stay in unique and quant bed and breakfasts such as the Riverview Lodge and caravan holiday parks such as Allhallows Holiday Park. This is due to the fact that it allows them to have a home away from home, from which to base their daily activities and provides for a low key and relaxing holiday experience enriched with the charms of the cute local B&B's and caravan parks most of which are locally owned.
Elizabeth Wright is an experienced travel writer who likes to share her experiences and expertise through article writing. Haven Holidays have 35 holiday parks across the UK, many with seaside locations and all with a huge range of leisure activities to keep the whole family entertained. To find out more information about Allhallows Holiday Park, visit the Haven website.

My name is Prerana Kulkarni. I am an artist based in Southern California, USA. I love to create vibrant and colorful paintings. I am a self-taught artist who has taken short workshops and online classes with master artists like Susan Sarback, Camille Przewodek and Geri Medway to enhance my skills.
I grew up in India and during my school years, I always loved art class. During summer vacations, I used to try out different mediums – watercolor, acrylic, fabric paints etc. – all on my own!! But I never had formal instruction. Later, I got busy with studying engineering college, job, life…
In 2008, I took my very first oil painting workshop in a community college and fell in love with the painting process. Within 3 years, I started getting selected in local juried shows. I was inspired by the feeling that even others had started liking my paintings!!
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The experience of creating brought profound joy to me and it almost felt like I got addicted to the smell of oil paints and palette knife painting. Each year, I took intensive week-long workshops with master artists and for the rest of the year practiced in my studio. And this journey continues… painting became my passion!!
In 2016, I rediscovered myself with watercolor painting. I just started to experiment on my own and was stunned by the results! Specially, I liked my flower paintings better in watercolors. So I continued to paint even in larger sizes and started getting into national juried shows!
So now, I paint both in oils and watercolors. In whatever medium or subject I choose to paint, I first try to find an interesting composition of light and shadow shapes. Then, I study the effect of light and try to capture the light in my paintings. I paint from photographs for the most part. But for still life paintings, I like to paint from a live setup.
My Inspiration is light anywhere and everywhere! I paint pets, flowers, fruits, still life, portraits – and inspiration has always come to me by the beauty of the natural world, as well as fond memories.
For my oil paintings, I paint in an impressionist style using a palette knife. One, I like the texture of the painting when a palette knife is used and two, cleanup is a breeze. Just wipe with kitchen towel and you’re done! It also produces a clean paint on the canvas. The oil paints I use are M. Graham Artists’ oil colors and I use canvas panels. The last couple of years or so, I am working on watercolor paintings and developing a series on florals.
Interestingly, my watercolor florals are created in realist style. Don’t know how that happened! I mostly use Maimeri Blu Artist Colors. I do have a few Winsor & Newton and Holbein colors too. The paper I use is natural white Arches Paper, either 140 lb OR 300 lb coldpress. Typically, for a painting bigger than 16×20 inches, I like to use 300 lb Arches coldpress since it is a bit heavier.
In terms of techniques, I never mix 2 or more different colors on my palette. I use the palette only to mix water into a color to vary its intensity. Instead, I use a glazing/layering technique a lot to achieve a desired color in my watercolor paintings. In other words, all my “color mixing” happens directly on the paper.
This technique allows me to work on my paintings over multiple days, a little bit at a time. I find this very useful since I have limited time to paint at the end of the day after my day job and house chores.
While doing all of the above, I do teach private students or conduct workshops on demand. I feel teaching someone is a very valuable experience and very satisfying to see a student making progress in their desired medium.
My Artistic Challenge And Fun Project
I like to take up challenges, my last one was live painting in an opening ceremony at the Anaheim Convention Center. The stage was huge, with live musicians on one side and my painting setup on other side. In the center of stage were Indian Classical dancers.
The music was Indian Classical music, representing the theme “five elements of nature”. My challenge was to create a 5 x 9 foot painting on canvas in 12 minutes, in the designated theme and presenting a magical experience in front of a 4000+ audience. It was an absolutely fulfilling experience!!
youtube
I hope my paintings bring JOY and COLOR into your life!!

Monocular House, Chester Basin Canada
Monocular House, Chester Basin Property, Canada, Nova Scotia Home, Canadian Building Images, Architecture
Monocular House in Chester Basin, Nova Scotia
23 Jul 2021
Design: RHAD Architects
Location: Chester Basin, Nova Scotia, Canada
The Monocular
The Monocular was designed to choreograph one’s experience of the dramatic waterfront site. Thus, it was treated as a Monocular, framing the view of the Basin beyond.
The programme includes a variety of spaces with unique requirements including an open layout for living and dining, an unconditioned screened-in porch, a private bunkie, and activated outdoor amenity spaces. To fit these elements in the most functional way possible our earliest design decision was to split these elements into two buildings.
First, a major building that would contain the primary year-round living quarters for the clients, and a minor building housing guest and seasonal spaces. Both buildings are modern interpretations of the wood-clad gable homes common of the local vernacular style. The design strategy allowed for the creation of the ‘Monocular’ moment between the buildings.
The lower level of the Major building contains an open living/dining/kitchen which flows onto the breezeway and out to the landscape beyond. The upstairs bedrooms were designed to have soaring ceiling heights following the gable form which allows for dramatic views out to the Basin.
All of the private spaces on this level were developed with the Master suite in mind since this is the space that will be occupied most of the time. The plan is such that the entire upper level can be opened up with pocket doors for a light and airy loft feeling. When the guest bedrooms are in use, the pockets can be closed up again to allow for privacy.
The single-level Minor building includes a workshop complete with an open-air outdoor shower sliced out of the building’s form, the bunkie, and the screened-in porch at the end overlooking the water.
The semi-transparent slatted cladding on this porch punctuates the entire project by acting as a glowing lantern in the night sky, seamlessly transitioning from interior to exterior space.
Introducing play and folly into the design was another of our primary goals. To make the space feel more comfortable and approachable, instead of the cold feeling that modern homes can sometimes have.
This warmth is expressed in several aspects of the home. From the perfectly placed windows in the bunkie (allowing the sleeper to see directly out from pillow level) to the nook upstairs in a sliced out skylight which allows the sitter to watch the tree-dappled “dancing” western sunshine.
Even the lofts above the guest bedroom closets allowing for another place of exploration for young children.
