California Voters—What to Do If Your Ballot is Rejected

"Whether you forgot to sign your ballot return envelope or signed it in a way that doesn’t match previous signatures, your ballot can be fixed in the weeks after the election. Every election cycle, a portion of ballots across California are rejected. Most of them were turned in late — which cannot be remedied — or had an issue with the signature on the envelope containing the ballot. Luckily for voters, signature problems can be “cured” by submitting a form sent by their county elections office by Dec. 3. The quickest way to know if your ballot has a problem is to sign up for ballot tracking through the California Secretary of State’s website at https://wheresmyballot.sos.ca.gov. Voters will be able to see if their ballot has been accepted and counted or if there is a problem that can be addressed. Voters whose ballots need fixing will also receive a letter from their county elections office, as well as a phone call and email if that information is on file. John Arntz, director of the San Francisco Department of Elections, said that the notification should come to voters in English and Chinese, unless they have selected a different secondary language for voting. Arntz said that the notification includes a form for voters to complete to verify their signature. They can either return it by mail, email or in person to have their vote counted. Alexander said that signature problems — which affected 394 San Francisco ballots in the March primary election — can affect first-time and younger voters who have not yet developed a regular signature or are unaware that the signature on their ballots will be compared to the signature on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Older voters are also impacted more often by signature problems as their dexterity and handwriting changes with age, making it more difficult to match their previous signatures. Alexander said that voters have 28 days — based on a new state law implemented this election — to get ballot curing forms back to their county elections office to have their votes counted. Counties will not be able to certify their votes until that deadline passes, Alexander said. In San Francisco, with ranked-choice voting for mayoral candidates, the cured ballots could end up impacting the final results if the election is neck and neck. Arntz said that the reports put out before he certifies the election are just a snapshot of the votes counted by that moment, but that cured votes submitted by the deadline could change the trajectory of the instant runoff election. In this year’s primary election, nearly 1,200 Alameda County voters had fixable signature problems. San Mateo County had over 400, Contra Costa County had over 1,000 and Santa Clara County had nearly 500. Alexander estimates that only about 50% of those ballots end up being cured and counted, based on a study her organization did of a handful of California counties. Recently, campaigns have realized in races with razor-thin margins that ballot curing can make a difference, Alexander said. For tight House races in the Central Valley and Southern California, volunteers could be working for weeks after Election Day to get signatures fixed."

a. Senator Glazer has been a strong voice on the environment, casting important votes on such issues as California’s fight against global warming by setting new targets to reduce emissions. He also has voted for new standards to promote clean energy through renewable energy sources. He authored a tax-relief bill to encourage water conservation, and voted to block the federal government from drilling oil off our pristine coastline.

To release $3.5 billion in FTX money to its customers, the Securities Commission of Bahamas (SCB) is awaiting court instructions. SBF is said to have withdrawn over $684K. A news release from the (SCB) revealing that they are in charge of more than $3.5 billion in FTX money marks a new development in the FTX drama. Sam Bankman-Fried is taking money out of the Alameda accounts while attempting to cover his tracks. Seized $3.5B FTX Funds Awaiting Court Orders In Bahamas According to the SCB, they took possession of FTX's assets on November 12 due to the danger of impending dissolution shortly after the company declared bankruptcy. Current developments in the current FTX and Binance

Here’s an explanation of how the conflict between Binance and FTX, two cryptocurrency exchanges, started and developed to cause chaos in the market. Nov. 9: The FTX website advises against making deposits because it cannot handle withdrawals.

On Nov. 9, FTX’s website went out for about two hours, and when it came back online, it strongly discouraged users from making deposits and stated that the exchange was unable to handle withdrawals. The notice was further confirmed in a post pinned on FTX’s official Telegram channel by the channel’s administrator, who stated that withdrawals of crypto and fiat were impacted and that they “had no idea” when it would be back online. They also said that they “have a lack of information at this point.” SBF apparently informed investors on November 9 that he needs $8 billion in emergency funding.

On Nov. 9, it was reported that Bankman-Fried had sent out an appeal to investors seeking $8 billion in emergency finance to address the “liquidity bottleneck” brought on by user withdrawals during the previous few days. According to reports, Bankman Fried wanted to collect up to $4 billion from investors and cover the remaining amount with debt financing and even his own wealth to make sure clients were satisfied.

When Bankman-Fried launched FTX in 2019, he was the new kid on the block. By that point, Binance, which was founded in 2017, had grown to become the biggest cryptocurrency exchange in the world.

According to a CoinDesk story, FTX’s trading division, Alameda, had assets worth $14.6 billion. However, FTX’s own FTT tokens made up the majority of the balance sheet’s assets. The FTT token has declined as a result of this public Twitter argument. On November 8 morning, a 20 percent decline was seen. FTT is also down 19 percent in price at $17.93 SOL is down 17%, and the SRM token from Serum is down 10%.

 Additionally, as a result, bitcoin is down 5.6%. The market is concerned that this could result in a liquidity issue for FTX and a replay of the Luna crash, which would have a domino effect on the entire global crypto economy. According to CoinDesk, FTX had a significant stablecoin exodus last week, with $451 million leaving the network and $15 million leaving its US subsidiary. FTX has a balance of $8.6 million BUSD, $28.5 million USDT, and $59.2 million USDC at the moment. The amount of money accessible to FTX US is $41 million USDC, $12.8 million USDT, $39 million PAX, and $11.3 million BUSD.

Everything from analyzing the wallet of the fake Banksy NFT artist to following-up with exploiter wallets in the wake of hacks, the data is often used but arguably not to the extent that it could be.For instance, there is a wallet widely-known to be that of Mark Cuban, serial entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks. He’s doxxed himself indirectly and directly many times — the address is the owner of markcuban.eth, for christsakes. And yet, when he announces that he’s invested in Polygon (or an algo stable shitcoin, RIP Titan) it’s news, but when he makes the moves on the wallet in real time…. the crypto-news industry ignores it?Reporting on wallet transactions is fraught with complications, however. It only makes sense then that in the first "reverse rug" in DeFi history, it’s the developers begging the community to return the funds. The big difference is that instead of ignoring requests, as exploiters often do, the community has seemingly responded.Last week, Alchemix suffered a bug that saw users walk away with 2262 ETH (almost $4.5 million USD, even with the recent price decline) in what is being called the first-ever “reverse rug”. Instead of using treasury funds or minting a new token, steps that other protocols have taken to recoup a loss after a bug or hack, the Alchemix team is asking users who benefited to return the ETH. In exchange, Alchemix is promising users 1 ALCX per 1 ETH returned. Taking a look under the hood, however, reveals that the majority of funds were donated from one altruistic Alchemist developer while the accounts that walked away with the most ETH show no signs that they will return the funds.On-chain data shows that the majority of ‘returned’ funds have come in the form of community members donating ETH, as opposed to users returning the ETH that the bug allowed them to claim. 1129.85 ETH has been returned as of this afternoon. Breaking it down, 358.21 ETH (~32%) is from users who benefited from the bug, while 771.64 ETH (~68%) has been donated by community members.

While some of the addresses may be speculating that those who donate will be eligible for future airdrops, the response also shows that the community wants Alchemix to succeed. Looking at addresses who received excess ETH from the exploit, the top 20 addresses walked away with almost 1800 ETH, ranging from 25 to 500 ETH. Of those, so far only four addresses have returned the full amount they got off with for a total of 174 ETH. One of these addresses, themockingjay.eth, returned the 40 ETH that they were able to withdraw because of the bug. Their address shows that they are active DeFi users and early Alchemist supporters, as demonstrated by them apeing into pool 2 a couple days after the protocol launched. However, in an interview with Cointelegraph Aave co-founder Stani Kulechov weighed in on the same problem dozens of protocols now face: how to continue the explosive growth in an increasingly complicated system?“Now the question is, how do we keep growing at the same pace, and also expand the growth as new projects are coming in, as new ideas and innovation comes into the whole ecosystem?” He asked.The first step for Aave is applying what works to new environments. The team is working on a governance bridge that can let users vote on layer-1 for decisions that will apply to the various layer-2 implementations of the market, allowing for “cross-chain decentralized decision making,” says Kulechov. This new feature will be available in a matter of weeks. However, larger changes are coming as well:“We believe the future is multi-asset and multi-governance. This means we’ll have more inclusive decision making in the community.”Multi-asset governance —- say, AAVE and BAL holders voting on a AAVE-specific proposal — will of course be an entirely new experiment, and comes with specific considerations for the community. In Stani’s view, which assets other than AAVE should determine Aave’s fate largely depend on the synergy. Ultimately it will be up to AAVE holders to vote on who gets in, but Stani pointed towards protocols like Balancer — who have a forthcoming deep integration with Aave to deposit unused AMM liquidity into lending pools — as a prime option in a multi-asset governance framework. Likewise, MakerDAO is building a system where the protocol deposits DAI into Aave, and then uses aDAI as collateral in special vaults to assist with liquidity crunches — another deep integration that would possibly warrant inclusion for MKR in multi-asset governance. This is part of a broader framework for the Aave core team stepping away from the project after the eventual Aave v3 launch. At that point, major users of the Aave protocol (including other protocols that may be using Aave), should be the ones to decide its parameters. As a result, the day may come when the most significant votes on Aave governance come from addresses controlled by other governance communities. Social media protocols? High fashion on the blockchain? And will it involve potentially lucrative airdrops to current AAVE holders? Kulechov was scant with details (despite his odd Tweets on the topic here and there), but did wax philosophical when it comes to possible airdrops:“The two key principles are distribution — how do you empower the Aave community when you distribute new assets — and secondly how you can use tokeneconomics to empower your product and your community.”As an example of empowering a community, Stani pointed to staked Aave, stAAVE, which is used to backstop the protocol as an insurance fund in the case of a shortfall event. Depositing into this fund rewards users with more AAVE and therefore more governance power — ultimately using the token to reward deeper engagement. The development of the backstop model — also known as Aavenomics, a whitepaper that laid out how the protocol would attract liquidity, and the security to back that liquidity — took six months. Stani said the team settled on a model where “the AAVE token becomes a way to transfer risk to community members, as they’re the ones making risk-based decisions.” This forces the community to be more involved, as they bear risk, but proportionally rewards them. Kulechov expressed skepticism that new tokens would be needed for new projects from the core team because “you can build value with new protocols directly in the ecosystem you have, and reinforce the current value there.” He also noted that the Synthetix model, which will lead to four new tokens in the coming months, may have downsides: “The risk is that if you come to market with five new tokens, you kind of might dilute the main asset and the community there, and split your community.” Potential fat airdrops aside, for now the focus is on the forthcoming “Aave v. 2.5,” the penultimate upgrade before v3.Enter DeFi Decade— stani.eth =(⬤_⬤)= (@StaniKulechov) June 17, 2021 Aave 2.5 comes with a focus on risk mitigation. Shulan Raises Threat Level (11:35 a.m. HK)

The Chinese city in the northeastern province of Jilin bordering North Korea raised its coronavirus threat alert level to high risk from medium, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

There were 11 new coronavirus cases in Shulan yesterday, local health authorities said on Sunday. The city is investigating the source of the infection after a police employee came down with Covid-19, the South China Morning Post said in a separate report Saturday.

HK Experiencing “Unprecedented Pressure,” (11:18 a.m. HK)

Although the epidemic is under control recently, and the economy has a little breathing space, social events seem to have signs of a comeback, which may interfere with economic recovery, Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Paul Chan wrote in a blog post Sunday.

“The epidemic can be prevented and controlled, but violence is hard to stop,” Chan wrote. “In recent days, crowds and conflicts have reappeared in some areas, and even interfered with the operations of shops or malls. This is absolutely bad news for the already weak Hong Kong economy, retail market, small shops and wage earners.”

The economic situation in the second quarter is still worrying, Chan said. He expects the situation to improve in the third quarter as long as effective epidemic prevention continues.

The People’s Bank of China said the country faces unprecedented economic challenges from the coronavirus pandemic and it will resort to “more powerful” policies to counter the hit to growth.

Policy makers will pay more attention to economic growth and jobs among multiple targets, the central bank said in its quarterly monetary policy implementation report, released Sunday. It reiterated that prudent monetary policy will be more flexible and appropriate, and that it will maintain liquidity at a reasonably ample level.

The country’s two most populous states, responsible for 65% of the nation’s coronavirus cases, are edging toward easing social-distancing restrictions after Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged them to start reopening the crippled economy.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney on Sunday that the state would ease its lockdown from May 15.

South Korea to Set Up Epidemic Response System (10:00 a.m. HK)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be upgraded to the Disease Control and Prevention Administration to strengthen its expertise and independence, President Moon Jae-in said in an address to the nation. CDC, FDA Chiefs Self-Quarantine (8:42 a.m. HK)

The heads of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are entering quarantine after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for the virus.

FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, 60, told staff about his self-isolation plans in a note on Friday, according to an emailed agency statement. CDC Director Robert Redfield, 68, will also go into quarantine, and will telework for two weeks. The pair are on the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

One of the highest-profile task force members, Anthony Fauci, will not quarantine. Fauci is doing a “modified quarantine,” where he will primarily work from home and wear a mask continually for 14 days. If he’s called to the White House or Capitol Hill, he will take every precaution on those trips, CNN reported.

Airlines for America, the trade group representing large airlines, said it would support fever checks for passengers and employees carried out by the Transportation Security Administration.

Musk lashed out at the California county blocking Tesla Inc. from reopening its only U.S. car plant, threatening to relocate to other states and cease manufacturing at the factory.

The electric-car maker filed a complaint at U.S. District Court in San Francisco, saying Alameda County’s order keeping the 10,000-worker factory closed violates due process and “puts businesses deemed critical to the nation’s well-being by the federal and state governments between a rock and a hard place.”

Musk, the chief executive officer who has called shutdown orders fascist, said Tesla will decide whether to keep producing cars in Fremont, California, based on how it’s treated going forward. Later in a blog post Saturday, Tesla said it has started the process of resuming operations.

U.S. cases increased 2.1% from the same time Friday to reach 1.3 million, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg News. That matches the average daily increase over the past week. U.S. deaths reached 78,320.

New York reported 2,715 new virus cases, for a total of 333,122, with 226 new deaths, bringing the total to more than 21,271.

Michigan had 430 new cases, bringing the total to 46,756, with 133 new deaths, for a total of 4,526, the state reported on its website.

Florida reported 802 new cases, raising the total to 40,001, with 46 new deaths, for a total of 1,715.

Ohio reported 681 new cases, for a total of 23,697, with an additional 25 deaths, bringing the total to 1,331, the health department reported.

North Carolina added 407 cases to bring its total to 14,360, and 15 new deaths for a cumulative total of 544, the health department said.

Former President Barack Obama excoriated Donald Trump’s handing of the pandemic as he urged members of his administration to rally behind presumed Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

While “it would have been bad even with the best of governments,” Obama said, “it has been an absolute chaotic disaster when that mindset — of ‘what’s in it for me’ and ‘to heck with everybody else’ — when that mindset is operationalized in our government.”

Obama, in Friday’s remarks reported by Yahoo News, said the response is an outgrowth of a trend where “being selfish, being tribal, being divided and seeing others as an enemy” have emerged as a stronger impulse in America.

Choose Love Learning | Kelly Bowers Superintendent

Choose Love Learning by Kelly Bowers Superintendent of Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District

I am excited for what this coming year will bring for our students, staff, and community. We are in the midst of our Choose Love learning, and I am heartened to see that across our district the concepts of gratitude, courage, forgiveness, and compassion in action are becoming daily practices.

As we look ahead to January 21st, when we remember and honor the contributions made by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we can see that Dr. King, too, shared the value of choosing love. Facing great challenges, Dr. King concluded, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” I am reminded that he also taught us, “Forgiveness is not an occasional act. It is a permanent attitude.” As our students learn about forgiveness at school, the Choose Love curriculum now has a family and community component that encourages all of us to follow the practices that can make our world a better place.

While the winter weather may keep us indoors, let’s use the time together to share our dreams, listen to one another’s hopes, and work and play together to turn those dreams into realities. I will always remember my dad’s adage: “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” As this new year begins, let’s “dream big” and set some goals that challenge our intellect, build our skill sets, and strengthen our relationships with family, friends, and community.

Junction Avenue K-8 and Marylin Avenue Elementary schools were recognized with the USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) Award for working to promote healthy school environments. To qualify for the award, the schools met various criteria related to nutrition and physical activities. We are pleased to acknowledge our newly composed Board of Trustees, as the new year brings with it a new governing body for LVJUSD. During the December 11th Regular Board Meeting, Livermore Mayor John Marchand installed newly elected Board member Emily Prusso and reelected Board members Craig Bueno and Anne White. The Board then voted for president and clerk, reelecting trustees Craig Bueno and Chuck Rogge, respectively, to those key leadership positions. These trustees, along with incumbent Chris Wenzel, will continue their sterling work for our schools, students, and community. We welcome Trustee Emily Prusso, and the rest of our Board, to their new term!

LVJUSD Board of Education

We are pleased to acknowledge our newly composed Board of Trustees, as the new year brings with it a new governing body for LVJUSD. During the December 11th Regular Board Meeting, Livermore Mayor John Marchand installed newly elected Board member Emily Prusso and reelected Board members Craig Bueno and Anne White. The Board then voted for president and clerk, reelecting trustees Craig Bueno and Chuck Rogge, respectively, to those key leadership positions. These trustees, along with incumbent Chris Wenzel, will continue their sterling work for our schools, students, and community. We welcome Trustee Emily Prusso, and the rest of our Board, to their new term!

Leader in Me is a program, based on Stephen Covey’s bestselling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, that empowers long-term student success by tapping into students’ internal motivations and unique talents. By addressing all areas of student development, the Leader in Me program provides principles to incorporate education in student health, engagement, responsibility, and caring for others.

Choose Love Learning | Kelly Bowers Superintendent

Choose Love Learning by Kelly Bowers Superintendent of Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District

I am excited for what this coming year will bring for our students, staff, and community. We are in the midst of our Choose Love learning, and I am heartened to see that across our district the concepts of gratitude, courage, forgiveness, and compassion in action are becoming daily practices.

As we look ahead to January 21st, when we remember and honor the contributions made by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we can see that Dr. King, too, shared the value of choosing love. Facing great challenges, Dr. King concluded, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” I am reminded that he also taught us, “Forgiveness is not an occasional act. It is a permanent attitude.” As our students learn about forgiveness at school, the Choose Love curriculum now has a family and community component that encourages all of us to follow the practices that can make our world a better place.

While the winter weather may keep us indoors, let’s use the time together to share our dreams, listen to one another’s hopes, and work and play together to turn those dreams into realities. I will always remember my dad’s adage: “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” As this new year begins, let’s “dream big” and set some goals that challenge our intellect, build our skill sets, and strengthen our relationships with family, friends, and community.

Choose Love at Home

As our students are learning to choose love this year in their classrooms, families are invited to participate in the Choose Love at Home program. Designed to support and complement what students are learning, the At Home program involves parents, guardians, and other family members in this evidence-based social emotional learning program.

There are many creative ways to integrate the Choose Love coursework into your home with your family. The  makes you feel to let go of the negative and focus on the positive.

Schools Honored for Healthy Choices

Junction Avenue K-8 and Marylin Avenue Elementary schools were recognized with the USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) Award for working to promote healthy school environments. To qualify for the award, the schools met various criteria related to nutrition and physical activities. Our Campus Catering department, school staff, students, and parent groups collaborated to update menus with healthy selections and to incorporate physical exercise into activities throughout the day.
