Thousand Autumns Chapter 1 Explanation of Names, Historical Context and Possible Influences
THE WORLD BUILDING!! I could scream. I was so so so impressed with Thousand Autumns.
Aside from literary poetry devices, MXS also uses a lot of historical characters and places in her novels, which was probably why they changed a lot of names in the donghua lol. Personally, I find it really interesting and this was what drew me to this book.
Here’s a round up of Chapter 1! I apologise that it's lengthy and it's a a short history class. But you'll need to know or else you're going to get really confused later on lol. Anyway, it gets a lot better! I came across a few videos that were very helpful for my understanding so I've linked them below.
There are 3 demonic sects, and at least 5 righteous ones in the whole show. And that’s excluding the royalty members 😂 and the Tujue folks. I was so confused when I first started reading and I had to do a lot of historical research myself before I fully understood what was going on.
Locations
玄都 Xuandu - This is where immortals were rumoured to reside in. It was also the name of a Taoist temple (Xuandu Guan 玄都观). This temple is located on Mount Heng and was built in the Southern Qi Dynasty. I’m not sure if this temple was the inspiration behind Xuandu mountain, but it is pretty interesting! Also, incidentally, there is a pavilion named Half Mountain Pavilion that's situated on the same premises. Doesn't it sound a lot like Half Step Peak?
Political Climate/Characters - Northern Qi, Northern Zhou and Chen Dynasty
Thousand Autumns takes place in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, a period where China was split politically during the 420-589AD. During this period, there was the spread of Buddhism and Taoism. This period came to and end with unification by the Sui Dynasty. So lol, if you know your history, you’d know that Thousand Autumns would logically end with the establishment of the Sui Dynasty if the novels continues to the end of the Northern Southern Dynasties period. 😂
The video below explains the role of Yuwen Hu 宇文护 and Yuwen Yong 宇文邕 (Emperor Wu) and their impact on the Zhou Dynasty. MXS puts her own spin on it but it's good to read about it or else it'll get really confusing later on. (I personally feel that her world building is underrated and MXS should get more credit for this!) You can skip to 8:39 of the video if you just want to learn about Yuwen Hu and Yuwen Yong. I'd suggest to bookmark this video whenever you're confused with the timeline of events! The Zhou Empire storyline follows this!
Gao Wei 高纬 of Qi Dynasty - Yet another historical character. The same video talks about the decline of the Qi Dynasty around 32:10
Tujue - Here's a video explaining how the Tujue were a part of all of these.
Hulugu 狐鹿估 is a fictional character but his name is very similar to another Hulugu 狐鹿姑 (note that the pronunciation is exactly the same but the last character is different) who was the Chanyu (Supreme Ruler) of the Xiongnu Empire in 96BC.
Kunye 昆邪 is also a fictional character, but there was a King Kunye 昆邪王 (? - 116BC) in history. According to the historical records 史记, he was defeated by Hua Qubing's army and subsequently became a vassal under the Han Dynasty. After his surrender, he was granted the title of the Marquis of Luoyin (located in modern day Shandong Province). Interestingly, his descendant was called Hun Su 浑苏. (If you've read on, you'll probably know the significance of this haha.)
youtube
Other Notable Characters
凤阁 (Qi) Feng Ge - this either means a beautiful tower, or a government official position in the Tang Dynasty. It’s also the name of a star in Zi Wei Dou Shu, a form of Chinese astrology. People who were born under this star were cultured and talented.
青城山纯阳观易辟尘 Yi Bichen of Chunyang temple on Mount Qingchen - Mount Qingchen’s a sacred Taoist Mountain in Sichuan China. It’s greatly regarded as one of the birth places in Taoism. Chunyang Temple’s a real temple in Guangzhou that was first built in the Yuan Dynasty. (MXS is clearly mix and matching temples with locations 😂) Yi Bichen’s name can be broken down to 易 = Easy, 辟尘 = avoid the mortal world.
雪庭禅师 Zen Master Xue Ting - Xue Ting’s name likely comes from the renowned monk, Xue Ting Fu Yu in the Yuan Dynasty. Xue Ting was his monastic title. He was an abott in the Shaolin Monastery and was famous for inviting martial artists to gather in Shaolin Temple.
临川学宫的宫主汝鄢克惠 Ruyan Kehui, Gongzhu of the Linchuan Academy - Linchuan, located in Jiangxi, has always been known as the “Home of Talents 才子之乡” as many talented people came from Linchuan since the ancient times. The Xuegong/Academy 学宫 is a place of learning. This term has appeared since the Western Zhou Dynasty and was commonly associated with Confucianism. The 宫主 Gongzhu was the title that’s given to the one who was in charge of a Taoist temple. (Okay MXS might not be historically accurate here 😂😂)

Smart materials innovation and industrialization: Boao Forum for Asia discusses how to bridge industry-university-research cooperation
Tumblr media
This international event has come to an end.
On September 21st, this professional and internationalized theme conference - Boao Forum for Asia International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum (BFAITIF) Third General Assembly came to a successful conclusion.
The Congress gathered many leading figures from the science and technology sector and industrial sessions at home and abroad, and through meetings and activities such as sub-forums with in-depth discussions, keynote speeches by cutting-edge science and technology experts, exchange receptions, and visits and inspections of science and innovation enterprises, the Congress has played a positive role in strengthening international cooperation in innovation, promoting the transformation of the concept of development, strengthening the innovation of institutions and mechanisms, and promoting the process of green and sustainable development globally, and has also created a good foundation for the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area and the "One Belt One Road". It will also create a favorable political and business environment for the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the "Belt and Road".
As the 10th sub-forum of the conference, the forum on the design and industrialization of smart new materials and attracted much attention, with experts and professors discussing technological innovation and the future of smart materials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the sub-forum, Wang Bowei and a number of experts and professors expressed their views on the innovation and industrialization of smart materials.
Academician Wang Bowei emphasized the importance of product innovation, saying that enterprises should focus on product innovation and market innovation, while universities or research institutes should be responsible for thinking and theory as well as technology innovation. At the same time, he also pointed out the future development potential of smart materials and emphasized that the core of industrial upgrading is product upgrading, while the essence of product upgrading lies in performance and technology.
Tumblr media
For his part, Prof. Xu Jian said that China needs more people to focus on doing one thing well in order to achieve global leadership in industry and technology. He emphasized the importance of integrating scientific research and technology and engineering with each other and called on all researchers and professors to work together to promote Chinese industry and technology to create a better world.
Prof. Jia Chunyang emphasized the need for clear direction and demand for back-end development and called for close cooperation and communication with industry, industrialists and capitalists. He also pointed out that universities need to improve their institutional mechanisms, staff composition and R&D models to adapt to market demands and rapidly transform scientific and technological achievements. At the same time, research directions such as smart materials need to be combined with practical applications, and close cooperation and communication with industry and capital to jointly promote the realization of technology.
Prof. Wei Tao believes that universities have advantages in basic research and innovation of scientific issues, but transforming innovative materials into technology is not what universities are good at. He advocates that universities pay more attention to the problems that the market and industry really need, and the smart materials they need, instead of blindly doing leading research that no one else has done. At the same time, environmental protection and sustainability issues need to be taken into account when developing smart materials.
Prof. Li Bin, on the other hand, focused on product innovation and development. He emphasized that product innovation and development should focus on sustainability and environmental protection, and called on all industry players to re-examine their products to achieve sustainable development. At the same time, he pointed out the impact of changes in domestic demographics and social structure on new needs and trends in product development, and called for product development to adapt to new consumer trends and habits.
Regarding the difficulties and pain points of industry-university-research cooperation, Academician Li expressed his views. He believed that University-Industry-Research cooperation is difficult because universities, research institutes and enterprises are on different channels, pursuing different goals and focusing on different points. At the same time, he also pointed out the phenomenon that university teachers and technical researchers pursue the perfection and innovation of technology, while enterprises focus more on profitability. In addition, he also mentioned the problem of benefit distribution between enterprises and researchers in the cooperation between industry, universities and research institutes.
Tumblr media
Academician Wang Bowei, on the other hand, made a striking point during the discussion: laboratories can accelerate the process of scientific and technological transformation and industry-academia-research by creating a small environment. He indicated that the integration of science and engineering technology can be realized within the laboratory by solving real-life problems, thus eliminating the need for result transformation and industry-university-research cooperation. This idea provides a new direction of thinking for the innovation and industrialization of smart materials.

this was my very first take on designing my friend’s fancast, created just before my previous reblogs. not really proud with the colouring smh, but i’ll drop it here for archive.
i never thought of fancast before, but my friend was so obsessed with c-ent and decided to tell me this and honestly, up until now, i still think that her fancasts are sooo good (even though i don’t really understand c-pop, and you really need to get certain images to make this right).
let me put the faceclaim’s name here because i don’t want to rummage through twitter in case someday i’m interested to make the graphic again lol.

xiao-yu is holding chun-bao as she takes her bottle? her little head is against his shoulder? the only thing stopping xiao-yu from vibrating out of his skin with gege feelings is that he doesn't want to jar his meimei.
As it is, he's still bouncing, but just very gently. It keeps Chun-bao from swallowing too much air while she eats. <3

He's got baby Chun-bao on his chest in a sling, so he can lean down and kiss her puffy hair whenever he wants. ❤️

How did the extended Wei-Lan-Jin-Jiang clan react when they discovered Chunyang and Jin Hong were in love with each other? Wasn't it weird for everyone since the two are functionally cousins (first cousins once removed)?
No. Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and Jiang Yanli did think of themselves siblings, but historically, marriages between maternal cousins and paternal cousins tend to fall into different categories (especially in Asia). Chunyang considers Jin Hong a maternal relative, since she was raised in the Lan clan despite having the Wei family name, and Jin Ling sees Chunyang as his maternal first cousin. In China, marriage to a paternal cousin was generally considered little different from marrying one's sibling, but marriage to a maternal relative was not seen the same way because lineage was traced through paternal descent.
This is the case for biological maternal cousins, and Chunyang and Jin Hong aren't even related by blood, so no one thought twice about it.

Hong-bao is (;⌣̀_⌣́) about the idea of reading and writing until he figures out that he can use these skills to exchange letters with chun-bao and his other long-distance friends and relations? then he's all for it. Hong-bao is writing little bao letters and signing them with a paw print!
When Hong'er and Chunyang eventually get married, Chun-bao reveals that she kept all of his letters, right from the year he first learned to write (at age 4) to the year he moved to the Cloud Recesses. She loves to look at them one by one and watch the pawprints grow from tiny prints to Enormous ones. <3

Jin Ling is minding a-chun and hong-er when a-chun demonstrates a new skill? Jin Ling knows its new bc wwx was talking about chun-bao trying to do it but not being quite there yet. Jin Ling is ⊂(♡⌂♡)⊃ to be the one that chun-bao showed off her new skill to. Proud dad and cousin!!
Chunyang wrote her name all by herself for the first time! Meanwhile, tiger cub Jin Hong is still leaving inky paw prints all over his exercise sheets.

If you don't mind me asking, why do Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's daughters have Wei as their surname and Xiaohui have Lan as his?
A-Lan got Wei Wuxian's name because Wangxian thought "Wei Shuilan" sounded much better than "Lan Shuilan." When Chunyang came along, she got Wei Wuxian's name out of respect for the fact that WWX gave birth to her and so that A-Lan wouldn't be the only sibling with a different family name.
Meanwhile, Xiao-Yu's name is Lan because Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian adopted him before their wedding. Lan Wangji wanted to ensure that Xiao-Yu would know him as his father during the several months he expected to spend courting WWX, and give him the same respect/protection via clan name that Sizhui had until he actually moved to the Cloud Recesses. This was especially important in Xiao-Yu's case, since it was publicly known that his mother was a prostitute.

wwx and lwj are going on Cultivator Adventures for a fortnight and the 3 little kids are being taken care of by their gege and uncles? the kids are Suffering because they have to eat Bland Lan Food for 2 weeks. but wait! it's uncle ning to the rescue, since he can cook spicy food. Go ning-shushu!!!
Luckily, A-Yuan and Xiao-Yu both know how to cook spicy food; but A-Yuan is better at cooking savory food and Xiao-Yu tends to add too much numbing spice (which isn't too spicy, but just Very Tingly), so babies A-Lan and Chun-bao are :( about the limited servings of delicious spicy soups and stews until Wen Ning arrives. <3
