here’s the thing about dune. the dune universe is gross and weird and pseudo medieval and grimy and it is fueled by literal blood, sweat, and tears in the absence of technological advances that typically define sci-fi as a genre. most dune adaptations are not gross and weird enough. there’s just something about the slick polish of 2021 dune that doesn’t capture the spirit of the original 1965 novel. this is why the 1984 lynch film, with all its flaws and inaccuracies, is the best adaptation of dune to date. in this essay i will-
