Fake Date
Denki Kaminari x Reader (Gender Neutral)
Warning : None
Summary: You need a fake date for your holidays party and Denki is the person for the job.
Tumblr media
"Wait wait wait stop you want me to do what?"
I sigh looking back to the guy in front of me. Disbelief sprawled across his face. Every inch of his being seemed either confused or amused at the ask.
"I need you to be my date for my families holiday party," I repeat. He just starts to bust out laughing. "Denki this isn't funny! This is seriously."
"Sure sure but why me? We barely like each other?" He asks me, "seriously until a month ago we were almost sworn enemies."
"I wouldn't say enemies," I say as my eyes look to the ground.
"Why me?" He asks again.
"You are the exact guy my parents wouldn't want me to be with," I say as I meet his eyes, "seriously they hate these alternative guys! I mean they freaked when my sisters last boyfriend had an earring. They'd hate you! And I really want to piss them off." He starts to laugh again. I scoff harshly as I pull back. "I don't know why I even asked you! Jeez this was such a mistake."
"No no no," He says grabbing my arm to keep me from leaving, "I'm just amused that of everyone you could have asked you came to me."
"I was going to take Kiri," I say as I pull away from him, "but my parents would love him. They'd have it out to the press that we were looking into marriage before I even knew. You however. They'd finally get off my ass about everything."
"Mmm I would but I'm busy babe," He says smirking widely.
"No you don't," I say to him.
"How do you know I don't have plans?" He asks me a brow raised slightly in amusement.
"Because every holiday where people go home to see their family you sit in you and sero's apartment jacking off to pictures of Midnight in her original hero costume.”
"How do you-"
"Kaminari you told me at the new years party while you were wasted and trying to shove your tongue down my throat," I say to him while I fold my arms over my chest, "now I'm sorry for even asking you I'll go to Bakugo-"
"NO- I mean no it's fine I'll go with you," He says to me, "I'll get your family off your ass."
"Sweet thank you so much-" I start.
"Ah ah ah on one condition," He says to me, "next interview you have about being a top tier pro hero you have to take me with you."
"Fine sure whatever," I say to him, "I am completely fine with you going on the show with me. Seriously those losers are way too stuffy anyways." He smiles brightly then nods.
"You are lucky that I enjoying being a disappointment to parents," He says smirking, "so when do you want to go meet the parents?"
"Thursday," I tell him, "meet me here and we'll head out."
"Of course she you then pretty," He says to me. He winks at me then moves off.
I am going to regret this aren't I.
Three days later after much taunting its time. As I fix my outfit in the mirror the blond struts into my apartment. A smirk already plastered across his face.
"Are we staying there?" He asks, "are we gonna have to share a bed? Are you gonna be naked?"
"Okay you pervert we aren't staying the night," I tell him, "we drive up there and then drive back simple as that. Now get the idea that anything is going to happen there out of your head." He chuckles lightly.
"You act like you don't want something to happen," He says snarkily. His teasing evident in his voice.
"I don't!" I exclaim, "I just want my parents off my ass for the rest of the season before I have to do it all again next year."
"Who knows you might be taking me for real next year," He adds. I sigh looking over at him finally. I see he has a black button up on with some ripped black jeans and a flannel tied around his waist. Paired with it he has some boots giving him a couple inch height boost and layers of earrings and chokers. He looks good. Has he always looked like this? "Are you checking me out?"
"No," I say to him, "I'm not checking you out." I back away from the boy annoyed at the accusation. "I would never check you out."
"You were totally checking me out," He says softly, "seriously I know I look good but damn you can't be looking at me like a piece of meat."
"I already wish I got Bakugo," I say with a sigh, "hell even Shinso would have worked and he wouldn't have been a perv about it." Denki sighs as he moves behind me. I look to see our reflection in the mirror. We look good together. I guess I never noticed that we would have been a cute couple. Where is this coming from?! Oh my gosh whats wrong with me.
"Look at how cute we are," He says to me. He pulls bake and smiles brightly at me. "If you want us to look like a real couple you're gonna have to at least pretend to like me. I mean I am doing you a nice favor."
"Yeah thanks Denki," I say as I turn to meet his eyes, "I hate to cut into your time with Midnights picture and a bottle of lotion."
"Hey your always welcome to help," He says with a wide smirk. I move punching him in the arm harshly. "Ow! Kidding god I'm kidding I'd never ask you to do that. Well I mean unless you want- Ow!"
"Knock it off," I say to him, "actually- if you say that around my parents they'll freak. Keep it up."
"Uh yeah alright," He says to me.
"Now come on hottie lets go piss of my parents," I say to him as I grab his hand. I pull my purse on my arm and move pulling him out of my home to the car. Once we pile inside I notice his flirty personality is more relaxed. Like he finally toned down. "You alright?"
"Yeah," he says staring out the window, "just thinking about how I haven't met anyone's parents in this fashion since I met Jiro's family back in 2nd year."
"Wow that was like what 5 years ago?" I ask him, "huh its been a while since you dated anybody seriously huh?"
"Like you can talk," He says to me, "the last person you dated was what Todoroki back in 3rd year?"
"Nah we broke up the year after that," I correct him, "but yeah its been a bit. I mean I had that think with Izuku last year but its just ya know hard to date with the public in your face about every little thing."
"Tell me aout it," He says to me, "I went on one date with some girl from my agency and suddenly everyone was on my dick about it. I mean I got hounded by reporters asking all about the scoop."
"See its hard to date in our career," I tell him, "pros don't really catch a break. And that doesn't even count the fact that dating a non hero puts them in terrible danger and how it makes a weakness that villains would defiantly exploit." I sigh focusing on the road as we move along the directions towards my childhood home.
"Would you date?" He asks me.
"Yeah if the right person came along," I say to him, "what about you?"
"I want to get back out there," He says sneaking a glance at me.
"Well any ideas?" I ask him.
"I have my eyes on a special someone," He says to me.
"Well who?" I ask him.
"Uh you wouldn't know them," He says quickly, "they are at my agency."
"Oh," I say softly. Who does that bother me? Who cares if he's into some random girl. "They cute?"
"The cutest- ah I mean their alright," He says, "perfect. I've known them for a while. I've just been too scared to say anything."
"Well you should just talk to them," I offer up to him, "you'll never know. I mean if I was them I'd want you to tell me."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah," I say to him, "trust me."
"Well uh I-"
"Oh look we're here," i say to him. I pull into the packed drive way parking in the furthest spot. "You were saying?"
"Uh nothing," he says to me, "uh lets go in."
"Alright," I say to him. We both climb out and meet at the front of the car. He moves pulling my hand into his. I start to feel my heart racing at the action. Stop it Y/n this isn't anything. He's just playing along.
"How long have we been dating?" He asks me.
"You pick," I tell him, "I'll get the story together but don't panic- oh hey mom!" My mother moves pulling me into a deep hug. As she pulls back and I reclaim Denki's hand she looks to him slightly confused.
"Who's this?" She asks me.
"This is my boyfriend Denki," I tell her, "Denki this is my mother. Leia L/n."
"Nice to meet you Leia," He says with a sly smirk, "hows it going?"
"You can call me Ms. L/n," She says sternly, "its nice to meet you Denki." Her eyes move back to me, "shall we head inside."
"Sure," I say to her. As we move inside he tightens his grip on my hand. He's actually nervous. Jeez you'd think this was the real deal or something. Once inside I feel my entire family move their eyes to us. Like apparently we are the most interesting thing in the room. "Hey everyone."
Various hellos are thrown towards us. We follow my mother to the kitchen where she hands over a glass of wine.
"Oh no thanks I'm alright," I say to her, "I'm driving."
"Oh he's not?" She asks.
"No I'm driving," I correct, "Denki isn't allowed to drive my car after he almost drove us off a bridge three years ago."
"If you weren't using your quirk to mess with me it wouldn't of happened!" He adds.
"Oh sure sure," I say. A light smirk on my face. My quirk is puppeteer I can control others in a puppet like fashion. Shinso and I always had to train with each other because of our quirks. Anyways I was messing around with him as he was driving me home one night from a club. But it was hardly my quirk that made him almost crash. Really it was when my dress fell down that he made the sudden jolt.
"Three years?" My mom asks us.
"How long of you all been together?" My sister asks as she joins us.
"We've been together for 8 months now," Denki tells them, "but we went to school together."
"We've been friends for so long so we have quite a bit of history huh," I say looking over to Denki. The smile on my face so pure. He smiles as he looks over me.
"You two are quite the pair huh?" My sister asks looking between us, "how'd you get together?"
"I thought they were gonna ask me," Denki says, "they've always been the one with guts between the two of us. But they never did. Then we were at a party for someone's birthday. We both were just relaxing on the roof after it all became too much just having a good time. Talking about our future and dreams. After a while I decided I needed to ask them" He's talking about the party. I remember that. I was waiting for him to do something. He wasn't being flirty or pervy he was just being himself. It was so nice. I leaned in for him to kiss me and then Shoto opened the door. We jumped about fifty feet back from another. "I had rehearsed the words hundreds of times. But then all the sudden I couldn't make them fit. But when I looked at her they just formed together-" He meets my eyes then snaps out of it, "now Y/n is my favourite hoe I have."
"Excuse me!"
"Don't talk about my child like that!"
"Guys its fine," I say to them, "it's chill."
"Chill?" My mom asks then mumbles something under her voice as she looks to my father completely annoyed. "She always picks the worst ones-"
"Thats not true Shoto was great," My sister says, "you guys loved him. Remember you begged her to get back together with him."
"He was a good one!" My father adds, "she can't pick them anymore."
"Whatever," I huff, "Denki let me show you around." I tighten my grip on his hand as I lead him away from the full kitchen and dining room. As we get to the hallway I pull him towards my childhood room. "Now don't make fun of the décor I picked it out at ten."
"I wouldn't make fun of it," He says unconvincingly. I roll my eyes and pull him into the room. Around me pink walls and butterflies fill the room. "Nice collection of boyband posters."
"Ah that addition was added around 13," I say to him, "along with that wall of pictures right there." He moves looking over them. I smile forms across his face.
"I'm in a lot of these," He comments.
"Well of course you are," I say to him, "you're one of my closest friends and you've been that since we started at UA."
"True," He says as he pokes at a picture of Todoroki and I where I'm pecking his cheek. "What actually happened with you two?"
"I realized that he and I both wanted different things," I tell him, "I wanted to get married and he didn't. Which is fine I completely understood wanting to wait. But then he said he wouldn't really want to get married at all."
"Oh," Denki says.
"Yeah well I decided that I wouldn't keep going with a relationship that I knew was going nowhere," I explain, "Todoroki and I weren't really even in love anymore. So it makes sense that we split up."
"I always thought it was because of you and Izuku," he says, "thats what spread around at least."
"God no," I say to him, "Izuku and I weren't even trying anything. We made out at a party once that year and all the sudden everyone screamed about how I left Todoroki for him."
"I'm sorry about that," He says to me.
"Its whatever," i say to him. I sit down on my bed and he settles beside me. "So that story?"
"Oh that," he says softly, "it was nothing. Just something I've spun. I'm good at making cover stories up like that."
"That night I honestly thought you were gonna kiss me," i say to him, "I was waiting. Ya know then Shoto opened the door and suddenly you pulled back."
"I didn't want to cause something between you two," Denki says, "you guys for a bit seemed like you were going to get back together."
"I didn't want to he wanted to try it again," I admit, "I had my mind on another guy."
"Was it- was it me?" He asks quietly. My eyes meet his.
"Does it matter anymore?" I ask him, "you like someone else. You know the person at your agency." He moves crashing his lips into mine. Shock covers my face but I start to melt into the soft kiss. As we move together I can't help but to feel like everything in our lives has been leading up to this. Finally I pull away. "Kaminari you are the worst." He smirks.
"But you love me."
"Always have."

So You Say You Want To Dance On Kauai?
So you think you can dance? Good news! Dance on Kauai is alive and well. Whether it is ballroom, swing, Latin, tango, zouk or dancing with your partner on the sand, we have you covered. But, before I tell you what is happening on the Garden Island, check out this video that was created by one of the Oahu dance groups last year. The basic moves are West Coast Swing.
I have been involved with the swing dance community on Kauai for about 15 years. Our passion is west coast swing but that does not keep us from moving our hips to other forms of dance (cha cha, hustle, east coast swing, country 2-Step, nite club 2-Step, salsa). Every Tuesday evening a small group of us meet up at Rob's Good Times Grill in Lihue for some companionship and dancing. Our leaders are really considerate about dancing with all the followers so no one gets left out. For years the owner of the grill has graciously allowed us to play our music through his sound system from 7:30 to 10:00. Many come early to eat in order to support our host. The food is yummy and relatively inexpensive. Visitors occasionally find us online and join in on the fun. Everyone is welcome.
Four times a year, on the second Friday of the month (February, May, August, November) a dance is held at the Church of the Pacific, just outside the Princeville Resort. A potluck starts the evening off at 6:30, then a half hour dance lesson, followed by social dancing until 10:00. A variety of music is played. All dance levels are encouraged and no partner is necessary. Visitors to the island are always welcome.
Every Sunday, at the Koloa Neighborhood Center, a group gathers for a dance lesson at 7:00 followed by social dancing to a variety of music. Morgan Peters is the resident instructor and she rotates the lessons through numerous dances for a three week series of each. Next dance up: East Coast Swing.
Throughout the week, dance studios and individual teachers offer classes and events around the island. The best way to find out what is happening for any given week is to email [email protected]. I personally handle this email address as well as send out a dance email each weekend. Here is this week's schedule of events as an example:

Kauai Dancing Blog
Another place to find information about dance on Kauai is to go to our blog. Although it does not include as much info as the weekly dance emails, it does generally include special dance events taking place on the island.
So, if you have been thinking about learning to dance on Kauai, now you know where to go. If you are visiting the island, please feel free to join us. Even though many will be partner dancing, free styling is always an acceptable form of dance! Remember, dancing is good for the body, mind, and soul.

 TRIBE NEWS - 25th JANUARY 2000:
Tumblr media
Important news - The Tribe moves from Sunday on Channel 5 (UK) to Saturday!
We have been advised that Channel 5 in the UK is changing the date they broadcast the Tribe. From Saturday 29th January, the Tribe will be shown as one-hour episodes every Saturday at 16.55 pm (and not every Sunday, as it has been up until now). This is due to the great success the series has had so far (other rival channels had even lined up programs against the Tribe`s slot on Sunday) and from now on, the Tribe can be seen every Saturday at 16.55 pm.
Tumblr media
Exclusive - The Tribe appear before 30,000 people
We are delighted to advise that this Saturday 29th January, the cast from the Tribe will be appearing at the new Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, before an expected packed out crowd of 30,000 people. The Tribe will be the half-time entertainment during an Australian Rules football game at the stadium. During the interval between halves, the Tribe cast will perform two songs from the forthcoming Tribe album - "Abe Messiah" and "This is the place". This will be the Tribe`s largest public performance to date so far (previously, the Tribe had played a venue at Christmas before 5,000 people). Members of cast are rehearsing their routine and choreography this week and are looking forward to the performance on Sunday. With a world tour planned for the Tribe album later in the year, this is expected to be the first of many performances at stadiums and large venues around the world! We will have feedback from the cast next week on how the appearance went and some pictures. You will be able to find these in the News section here and in the Location Report on Tribeworld.
Tumblr media
Zoot (Daniel James) is coming to get ya!
On Monday 24th January New Zealand time (Sunday 23rd January European/American time), Amy Morrison (ZANDRA) appeared live and exclusive on the Bulletin Board at Tribe Talk. Amy really enjoyed talking with fans and viewers and looks forward to appearing again in the near future. If you missed Amy`s appearance, you can check out what she had to say on the Bulletin Board in the Tribe General Chat section of the Forum Index.
Tumblr media
We are delighted to announce that the next member of cast to appear live and exclusive on Tribe Talk is Daniel James, who plays Zoot in the series. Daniel will be appearing on the Chat Room at Tribeworld (and not the Bulletin Board as with previous cast members). The Chat Room will enable live and immediate chat so all users can see what Daniel has to say about different things and his answers to questions. Daniel will be live on the Chat Room in Tribe Talk on Friday 4th February at 08.00 am (New Zealand time). PLEASE NOTE for fans in the UK, this is Thursday 3rd February at 19.00 pm UK time due to the time difference. In the USA, this is 14.00 pm on Thursday 3rd February EST. If you haven`t been in the Chat Room before, you will need to create a username and password to enable you to use the service. To do so, visit the Chat Room in Tribe Talk and follow the online instructions. You can then join in when Daniel appears next week. IF there is a problem with the Chat Room when Daniel appears (just as a back-up, we don`t expect there will be any problem with the Chat Room), then don`t forget to check the Bulletin Board. IF there is a problem with the Chat Room, Daniel`s interview will continue in the Bulletin Board. So, to ask what it`s like being Zoot, leading the Locos, riding around in the Loco`s police car, being the boyfriend of Ebony, and perhaps being the toughest and baddest character in town, then Daniel James will be on Tribeworld soon!
Tumblr media
2000 Competition
There is a special competition on Tribe Talk that was set in December last year (and last century/millennium!) that asks "What kind of world do you see for the 21st Century?". A special prize will be given to the winner who has the most imaginative answer - and the judges of the competition are some cast members from the Tribe! Many of you have entered the competition already and cast members have already read the submissions so far, which are very good! The competition can be found in a message called "2000" posted by Cloud9production in the WorldView section of the Forum Index on Tribe Talk. To enter, all you have to do is post your thoughts under the topic - and the closing date is Sunday 30th January. On Monday 31st January, the cast members will choose the winner and we will announce details on Tribeworld. Good luck! To jump to the special 2000 competition, Click here
Tumblr media
When is it on?
Many of our new American fans and viewers have emailed us asking information about when the Tribe is on so as not to miss any episodes. By popular request, we are advising our US viewers that the Tribe can be seen every weekday on Encore`s WAM! Channel and the show is broadcast three times a day - at 16.00pm, 20.00 pm and 24.00 pm (all Eastern Standard Time).
Tumblr media
New Zealand news - competition winner to act in the Tribe
The magazine in New Zealand called "Girlfriend" had absolutely truck-loads of entrants for the competition where the prize was to go to the Cloud 9 production centre, meet the Tribe and be in the Tribe on a day of filming! The winner of the competition is a young girl from the West Coast of New Zealand, who will travel to Wellington on Friday 28th January and be in the Tribe! We will have some details on Tribeworld after the special day for the lucky winner!
Tumblr media
A Tribal Welcome to Eire!
The Irish channel RTE will start broadcasting the Tribe as half-hour episodes from Wednesday 26th January at 18.00 pm. We would like to welcome new viewers and fans in Eire to the tribe of fans and viewers around the world, and we hope you enjoy the series and the Tribeworld website!
Tumblr media
Two weeks of Series 2
We are now in the penultimate week of production of Tribe Series 2. After six months, the production has a few more days left before it "wraps" on Friday 4th February. There is an update from the location in the Location Report section in the GUIDE part of Tribeworld. After that, there is still post-production to be done (when music and sound effects are added - and episodes are edited together and mixed) and this will continue into March 2000. And after that? Well, the Tribe has become a hugely successful series worldwide and as long as there are viewers and fans of the series then there will always be the Tribe on television screens. Cloud 9, the makers of the Tribe, are planning Series 3 of the Tribe with UK broadcast Channel 5, who commissioned the series. We will advise more details in the future but in the meantime, keep the dream alive…
Tumblr media
Michael Wesley-Smith (JACK) audio interview now on Tribeworld We are pleased to advise that an audio interview with Michael Wesley-Smith (JACK) is now available on Tribeworld at http://www.tribeworld.com/club/download/clips_michael.htm There are Real Media and QuickTime versions available and we hope you enjoy what Michael has to say about Jack, The Tribe, and loads more! ALL members of cast are being interviewed and their interviews will appear on Tribeworld in the near future.

First Actual Week of School (10/02 - 10/06)
Due to exams, sports day, and random national holidays, this was my first week of following a normal schedule! At times it was slightly overwhelming and very confusing, but overall it was fun.
On Monday, I had a day off, since it was a national holiday. I just did homework for the first half of the day, and after lunch I played Wii with my host sisters. I was really fun and it was nice to play the same games that I loved when I was younger. For dinner, I met with one of my dad’s friends and her family at the US embacy compound. We had hamburgers for dinner and Oreos for dessert, and since they’ve only been in Japan for about 2 months now, it was nice to share my expericenes with them and hear about all theirs as well. After dinner, I got to watch an episode of The Office, on their TV, (which is blocked in Japan as well as Game of Thrones), and then she took me home via subway. Overall the dinner was realy fun and the family was really nice and welcoming to me.
On Tuesday, I had Math first period. Since every class I attend is taught in Japanese, I really have no idea what’s going on ever. My math teacher, Mr. Kai, gave me the math textbook they use in class, but it was all in Japanese. Since it was the first day back after exams, everyone was just getting back thier tests, so I didn’t really pay attention and wrote things in my planner the entire period. Second and third period, I had my Japanese lesson. It was fun, and I started to learn Kanji and verb conjugations. I got to read the little notes in the front of the book that girls in previous years had written, as well as the “がんばって” note that somebody had written right next to the verb conjugation section. I’m pretty sure that “がんばって” translates to “good luck.” Before lunch, I had self study. After lunch, some of my friends invited me to play badmitton in the gym with them. We played for about 20 minutes and it was really fun! I never really saw the point in playing Badmitton, but now I think it’s really fun and I’m thinking about joining Badmittion club! After lunch, I had PE with the second graders. To my suprise, Mariko was in the class, and we had a lot of fun talking the entire period. In gym, we played dogdeball, which I’m really bad at, but it’s okay because I had fun anyways. For my final period of the day, I had Advisory/Self Study. Advisories don’t exsist at St. Margaret’s so “Advisory” for me is just meeting with Mr. Y and talking about upcoming events I need to know about, or problems that I have. I asked him about what I’m supposed to do in Math, and he said not to worry about it. It was a short meeting, and I went back to the library for the rest of the period. After school everyday at St. Margaret’s there’s this thing called club time, and it’s just basically about an hour and a half after school when clubs hold their practices. Different clubs meet on different days, and there are all kinds of clubs that you can go to. As far as I know, I think you have to join a club and stick with it for the rest of the year. For next two weeks, I’m just looking around at all the clubs I’m interested in so I can pick which one I’ll enjoy the most. For my first look at the clubs, Mariko showed me Kendo club, which she’s in. It was really interesting to watch, and I even tried on the white uniform and hit the practice dummy a few times. Everyone was super nice and the teacher was pretty laid back and funny, but I don’t think I’m going to join just because it takes a really long time to master all of the basic motions and I probably won’t be in Japan long enough to actually fight in a match with someone. After Kendo with Mariko, I went home with Haruka, who’s in Choir.
On Wednesday, I don’t have Japanese, which is kind sad, but it gives me a chance to spend a little more time on my homework. I had Self Study first and Math second. At the beginning of Math class, Mr. Kai gave me another math textbook with some pages marked, an answer book for all the problems, and a couple of sheets of paper with a bunch of equations on them. He told me that this was all the work I needed to do by the beginning of December. I recognized most of the problems, and just worked on them until the end of class. For third and fourth period, I had handbells with the third graders. I’ve taken handbells before, when I was in 5th grade, but it was still difficult. They started a new song, Amazing Grace, so for the first part of class, everyone was highlighting their parts. Since I’m new to the class, I played with a partner. She was really nice and showed me what parts I should highlight and the differnt bells I have to play. Since I already know how to play handbells and kind of read music, the only difficult part was figuring out what meausre we were playing. It was a new song for everyone, so we were stopping and replaying meaures a lot. Despite that, it was fun and kind of interesting to be playing handbells again. (Edit: I actually had Handbells on Thursday and Japanese Calligraphy during this time. I realized this once I had finshed writing this post.) After lunch I played Badmittion again, and one of my friends taught me how to serve. Fifth period I had Biology for the first time, and it was not what I was expecting. It started out on a rough foot, because I got to the Bio room 5 minutes before class started, and no one was there and the ligths were all turned off. Confused, I went to the teachers office to ask Mr. Y were my Bio class was. After I showed him that no one was in the classroom, he and I ran around the buidling, asking other science teachers where the class was. Eventually, the other Bio teacher told us it was in that same room, and after we finally went back to the classroom, we found the whole class was sitting there. It was okay though, because the teacher was just handing back the tests. After a couple of minutes, everyone went and got changed in pants and long sleves, because we were gardening, and they are LOTS of mosquitos in Japan. Gardening was interesting, and we took apart all of the supports for the plants (they had died) and started digging up weeds. I thought that we were only going to do that for this class period, and then it would just be a regular Bio class for the rest of the year, but I was wrong. Turns out, Bio is a double period class. For the first hour of every class we garden and dig up weeds, and the second hour they go back inside and have a regular Bio class. Since I have a different class schedule than everyone else does, I only have class during the gardening part, and then I go to gym while everyone else goes inside and has class. It was a nice suprise, and it will be fun to garden and make some freinds for the rest of the year. For the last period of the day, I had gym with the 1st graders. It was kind of boring because I didn’t know anybody in that class and not many people could speak English. We played dodgeball again, which I was really bad at. I’d have to say the worst part of the class was the new warm up dance. In most schools in Japan, there is a warm up dance or routine that everyone does at the beginning of class to strech out and prevent injuries. On Tuesday, I also had to do this new dance, but I was talking and laughing with Mariko the entire time, so it didn;t matter all that much that I had no idea what was going on. On Wednesday, I didn’t have anyone to talk to, so I had to actually focus on dancing. This dance was much harder than the last one, which I learned how to do pretty well in about 3 days. I looked pretty stupid doing it, and it was really hard to try and keep up. After Gym, I had homeroom, which I have at the end of everyday. On Thursday we have long homeroom, which we can do lots of different things in. As I was about to leave after homeroom had ended, Mr. Y told me that in L.H.R. on Thursday, we were going to be writing speeches on our favorite word or phrases. He told me I could write mine in English, but to try and write as much Japanese as possible. After that, I couldn’t visit any clubs because Haruka had to go home early so she could go to her tutor.
On Thurday, I had Japanese for the first two periods and then Handbells for the second two. I know I said above that I had Handbells on Wednesday, but I screwed up and looked at my schedule wrong. I actually had Japanese Calligraphy on Wednesday, but I’m writing about it here. Japanese was good and we spent most of the period practicing counting and working on grammar. Japanese Calligraphy with 3rd graders was really interesting, but really hard. Since everyone is already working on pieces of thier own, the teacher gave me a Calligraphy kit and an intructional booklet. I took Calligraphy once in my first week of school, so I had already practiced all the basic strokes. The next thing to do in the packet was practicing some basic Kanji. There was only one small complication: when writing Kanji, stroke order is really really important. Since I had been only learing Kanji for one day, I had no idea what the stroke order was for any of the characters. Despite not knowing that, I practiced writing all of them anyways. For the second hour of class, the teacher asked a couple of girls to help and teach me to write some Kanji. They asked me to pick my favorite Kanji and I picked “日本” which is just “Japan” written in Kanji. They were really helpful and gave me tips on writing certain strokes and taught me the correct stroke order. After Lunch, I played Badmittion again with some of my friends. For 5th period, I had Self Study, and after that, I had Gym class with 1st graders. I was relived because Haruka was in that class. We played dodgeball again, and I was significantly better at it than I had been in previous classes. During long homeroom, we wrote our speeches about our favorite words. I wrote down a bunch of words, but I couldn’t think of anything I liked. I have a few weeks before we present them, so I have some time to decide on a topic. After school, I had to wait for Haruka to get out of choir club, so I just did my homework for about an hour before going home.
On Friday, I had Chemistry first period. For the first half of class, the teacher handed back everyone’s test and went over all the answers. Since this was all in Japanese and I couldn’tve understood it if I wanted to, I practiced some Japanese for a few minutes. After that, the teacher started explaining an experiment we would be doing in the next couple of classes that would introduce the new unit. I didn’t understand that either, but from looking at the formulas on the board, I think it was just adding baking soda to vinegar. At the end of the lesson, the teacher gave me the answers to the exam they went over at the beginning of class and told me that they would be doing this experiment for the next two weeks. ( We only meet twice a week) After Chemistry, I had Japanese for two hours, and Math for 4th period. During Japanese, I practiced more numbers, verb grammar, and Kanji. In Math, I worked on my term work some more and got a fair amount done. After lunch, I played Badmitton again. It was a lot of fun and I’ve gotten much better since first playing on Tuesday. For 5th and 6th period I had self study, and I got a lot of Japanese work done. Homeroom was on a special schedule on Friday, because everyone was getting their results from their exams back. It took a long time but it was really fun for me because some of my friends started drawing Disney Characters on the chalk board and had me guess what they were. It was so much fun! After awile, they had me draw some charaters on the board for them to guess. After we ran out of Disney characters to draw, we started drawing company logos. It sounds kind of odd, but it was so much fun and we laughed a lot. After probably an hour of this, Haruka came into my homeroom and talked with everyone. It took a long time for me to be able to finally go home, but I had a lot of fun talking with my friends. I even got to hit the chalk board erasers together and walk all the chalk come out. It was really cool, since I had only ever seen it done in movies, but I got chalk all over me (whoops:) ) My first week of a normal schedule was really fun and it was kind of nice to start and end school at a normal time.
If you read this far, Thank you!!!! I know these posts are really long, but there’s just a ton that happens every week!

Although names and contact information of ayis and drivers are posted in the Community Bulletin, we do not affirm and/or affiliate ourselves with them.

Reminders
» Carrying Copies of Passport and Visa
We have been informed by Public Security Bureau that policemen are being sent to different locations like supermarkets or streets to check people's passport and visa. We would like to remind our community that carrying a copy of your passport and visa in your wallet is recommended so you are fine if you are checked. Please note that the policemen will show you their working ID when they stop you. If they don't, please ask. If you forget to carry the two copies, they could take you back to their office. In this case, we suggest you contact your employer who can confirm your passport and visa information. They may also stop unaccompanied students so I would recommend that you review this procedure with them as well.
» New Residence Permits, Work Permits or Passports?
Whenever you or your family members receive new residence permits, work permits and/or passports, please be sure to send copies of your new documents to the Admissions office, in the Welcome Center (1st floor High School). Or, email soft copies to Admissions. Keeping your children's files up to date helps us keep in compliance with Chinese governmental regulations.
» No Bicycles for Children Under Age 12 on Public Streets - Shanghai International Schools Association (SISA)
The following information regarding bicycle riding in Shanghai is shared in an attempt to be helpful to all its member schools. For safety purposes, the regulations in Shanghai allow for bicycles to be ridden on public streets only by children age 12 and above. This regulation is strictly enforced in Puxi, but is unevenly applied in Pudong. The immediate danger is that families may assume that local protections for bicycle riders may be the same as in their own country, but they are not. It is important to be aware that if a child under 12 is involved in any kind of accident on a public street or crossing, the parent may be held responsible. Sidewalks and bicycle paths along public roads are considered part of the public roads. In addition, as accident insurance is relatively new to China and there are not many precedents with these situations, your own accident or medical insurance company has the right to refuse cover in the event of violation of the local law. We hope that better understanding will result in better safety for younger children.
» Community Bulletin Objectives
The Community Bulletin conveys school and student-related information and supports community, volunteer and charitable organizations. The classified section and driver/ayi notices are meant as a service to parents. With the exception of sharing information and offers from Concordia's official corporate partners, we do not support commercial ventures or for-profit organizations. The Community Bulletin editors reserve the right to omit submitted content deemed to fall outside the scope of the Community Bulletin.
» Parent Directory Privacy Policy
At Concordia, we are very protective of family information and data. The school emails only information that is important and directly related to the school and student issues. Internally, we carefully monitor what is emailed to parents and ensure it is appropriate. The use of email addresses from the parent directory for non-school related or commercial reasons is a severe misuse of the directory.
» Submitting Community Bulletin Items
The Community Bulletin is a bi-weekly newsletter. Please submit text in final format by Wednesday at noon in Arial font (maximum 100 words or 5 sentences in paragraph form with a headline) to [email protected]. Based on the schedule of the next bulletin, submissions may be included the week they are received or the following week. Any submission received after this time on the week scheduled for publication will be included in the next bulletin in two weeks. Submitted items may run for a maximum of two consecutive publications.

NEWPORT, Tenn. — Wendy Ramsey began her working day as she frequently does, in the interesting basement of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. It was a Thursday, and her initially customer was coming at midday. She flipped on the fluorescent lights.
Racks of infant, toddler and maternity clothes neatly lined the waiting location. System and child foodstuff have been on the shelf, free for any person who came. A flier for a nearby domestic violence shelter was taped to the cinder-block wall, a person of its tabs ripped off.
A whiteboard in her business office listed her prayer requests: for her customers, for their salvation and for new toddlers.
“We are extremely open about what we do listed here — I guess extra so, what we do not do listed here,” she said. “We are not a health care facility, we do not execute abortions and we do not refer for abortions. You can see the type suitable there.”
She pointed to the sign-in clipboard. The disclaimer was printed in bold and all caps.
Ms. Ramsey runs Selections Pregnancy Enable Centre, a tiny evangelical Christian nonprofit that offers peer counseling, child materials and social companies referrals to expecting gals and mothers and fathers of youthful kids.
The June morning was tranquil, the reverse of the anti-abortion protests she applied to go to. Protests by yourself, she experienced occur to imagine, have been “not how Jesus managed something.” She remembered a Bible tale of Jesus welcoming an outcast girl — persons like the expecting gals and new moms she now spends her days making an attempt to assistance.
“If we want to be professional-lifetime, we have to want extra than laws,” she said. “It just can not get started and stop there.”
Beneath President Trump, the anti-abortion motion has extra energy than it has wielded in decades. Roe v. Wade is in the cross-hairs. 9 states have drastically curbed abortion legal rights in the previous couple months. Alabama banned almost all abortions, including in cases of rape or incest.
In Tennessee, conservative lawmakers are pushing a so-called heartbeat monthly bill, which would ban abortion weeks into a being pregnant.
But in this jap section of the point out, a rural and conservative region of cherished spiritual values, the abortion debates in Washington, in statehouses and on cable news can feel distant.
Below, the front line of the anti-abortion motion is a girl working out of a church basement.
‘My heart is for women’
Selections is a person of extra than two,seven-hundred anti-abortion being pregnant centers throughout the region. It is affiliated with Treatment Internet, a person of the a few premier networks of such centers in the United States, whose house page phone calls for motion in opposition to “the professional-option Remaining,” which it says “publicly defends infanticide.”
NARAL Professional-Choice The us phone calls being pregnant center activists “anti-option extremists” who “lie to and mislead gals to reduce them from contemplating abortion.” Planned Parenthood clinics, like a person in Memphis, report that being pregnant center volunteers attempt to entice gals absent from their doors with gift baggage or protest vigils.
“All of that is directed at shaming individuals who occur for abortions, and stigmatizing abortion, which is a section of wellbeing care,” said Aimee Lewis, a vice president for Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi. “They are pretend clinics.”
Selections, like several independent anti-abortion being pregnant centers, is not a accredited health care clinic. But contrary to some centers, it does not fake to be. Volunteers do not power gals to hear fetal heartbeats or exhibit them gruesome pics of aborted fetuses. Females are knowledgeable that the volunteers are not qualified counselors. The vast bulk who occur have previously made a decision to have their toddlers.
Instead, the mission is to guarantee gals they can manage the difficulties to occur, no make a difference the obstacles the center assists them come across positions, emotional support or even a position to shower.
“The career is to not just say, ‘Hey, this is a serious lifetime within of you, you want to save it.’ That is not going to execute something,” Ms. Ramsey, 31, said. “It is to get her to see that whichever she thinks is too big for her to manage, she can truly manage it.”
A 3rd of the persons in Cocke County, which incorporates Newport, are underneath the poverty line. The Tennessee Section of Wellbeing says that it ranks 94th of ninety five counties in wellbeing results, which measure size and high quality of lifetime, and that almost half of kids beneath five do not reside in two-father or mother properties. The nearest abortion clinic is 50 miles absent.
Nationwide, about a quarter of gals who experienced abortions said their most important reason was that they could not afford to have a child, in accordance to a 2005 study by the Guttmacher Institute. 50 percent of the gals who experienced abortions in 2014 lived in poverty.
“Circumstances really do not make a girl what she is,” Ms. Ramsey said. “My heart is for gals to know their worthy of,” she said, “that they have a intent, and that lifetime is not too tough or intense for them to meet the intent that they want to do.”
“I just really do not know this is a war we are going to win politically,” she went on. “I desire persons could just imagine persons, not energy. What is the very good for the persons?”
‘How can we assistance them?’
Ms. Ramsey’s initially customer arrived, virtually 8 months expecting. She was 19 and nervous about being a initially-time mother. Ms. Ramsey asked what accomplishment appeared like to her, and popped in a breastfeeding DVD to go in excess of means to hold a child.
The videos are section of a Christian curriculum built for anti-abortion being pregnant centers. When a customer will come to Selections, she watches a quick video clip, does some homework reflecting on the day’s matter and then earns “Baby Bucks,” points she can trade for clothes, materials, cribs — something in the donation stockpile.
“We have to do a being pregnant take a look at to begin supplying her stuff,” Ms. Ramsey described concerning customers, otherwise “things get traded and marketed.”
Down the hall, Brier Intelligent, 22, and her boyfriend finished a Bible study session. She dragged a pile of free infant clothes to the sofa and began to fold just about every onesie even though he played with their 7-month-aged.
They experienced been coming since she was thirty weeks expecting. When the Wellbeing Section diminished their son’s method allotment with the Females, Infants and Youngsters supplemental nutritional guidance method, they have been grateful Selections could assistance out.
Newport, a city of about 6,800, was obtaining a very little improved, Ms. Intelligent said. There was the updated film theater and pool at the park. But several persons they realized from college have been now addicted to medications — specifically methamphetamine. Grandparents have been still left elevating kids.
Ms. Ramsey stood in her business office, reflecting on her mission. She could remember only a few moments when a customer said she experienced occur to Selections considering about abortion.
“I really do not ever seem at a child and imagine, ‘This is going to make this girl’s lifetime way worse,’” she said. “When I see persons that are living in poverty, I really do not seem at it like, individuals persons shouldn’t have a child since they aren’t going to acquire care of it. I seem at it as, ‘Those persons aren’t in a very good problem how can we assistance them be in a improved problem, with or without the need of a child?’”
She finds truth of the matter in the critique by several who support abortion access that their opponents do not care about lifetime outside of start. “All we want is the child to be born, and then we are not going to give the mothers and fathers any sort of resources to acquire care of it,” she said of several others in the anti-abortion motion. “We are not going to occur alongside them, we are just going to come to feel like we won.”
‘A feeling of satisfaction in family’
The final customer still left for the working day, and Ms. Ramsey drove toward Cocke County Substantial College, wherever she graduated in 2006 right before attending Bible faculty in Knoxville. There, she dreamed of shifting to India to fight human trafficking, and even refused to have on sneakers for a month to protest worldwide poverty.
Final summer season, a management club at the large college volunteered to serve meal at the annual Selections fund-elevating banquet. It appeared that the complete city showed up: the nearby choose, the dentist, nurses, a pediatrician, the point out representative. Together they raised $35,000 to refurbish a donated residence so Selections could go out of the church basement, a go established for later this summer season.
This evening, Ms. Ramsey fulfilled with lecturers, wellbeing care providers, law enforcement and other community leaders to brainstorm how to get all the county’s kids ready for kindergarten.
She sat down subsequent to Alicia Dalton, who runs Newport Pediatrics.
“We are all quite considerably in the exact same room together all the time,” Ms. Dalton said, “all working together to meet the exact same requirements.”
Together the group talked about how to improve working day care alternatives, make transportation obtainable for persons without the need of cars and trucks and teach mothers and fathers about diet. They experienced a chorus: “The community owns the issue, the community solves the issue.”
“People acquire satisfaction in being ready to present for their people,” the county mayor, Crystal Ottinger, said a couple days later. “They can not constantly do that, for whichever reason: unemployment, disability, it may well be medications. I’m not going to sugarcoat it, we are rural Appalachia. But they continue to have a feeling of satisfaction in household listed here.”
It is a reason she thinks Selections functions: Persons have to gain points and acquire classes, not simply just acquire free stuff. “The extra persons that Selections can assistance, the extra probable they are to give back,” she said.
Ms. Ramsey said her perform was about helping gals and their toddlers, but she also experienced an underlying hope: that they would dedicate their life to Jesus. She features excess points for Little one Bucks if they go to church. “I can not lie,” she said. “Ultimately, I just really do not imagine that there can be an considerable lifetime without the need of Jesus. If they say that’s manipulative and a mystery tactic, then I will not apologize for it.”
“I will notify you,” she went on. “We have ladies that really do not go to church, that really do not do the Bible research. I give them as considerably as any one else. And I love them as considerably.”
‘He will established a path for me’
The morning following the assembly, Ms. Ramsey established out in a white minivan. Numerous of her customers do not have cars and trucks, so she picks them up.
She is aware of Newport’s streets by heart: previous the Meals Town Fuel ’N Go, along the railroad tracks, by the women’s jail, wherever she volunteers just about every other Thursday, to the bridge dotted with baskets of fuchsia-coloured blossoms. She crossed.
This was the aspect wherever she grew up, initially in the gray trailer and then in the residence wherever her mother life.
She appeared out at the dim clouds escalating in excess of the Smoky Mountains in the length and pulled into a driveway. She prayed silently and then knocked on the door.
A youthful girl stepped out, about five months expecting. Jennifer Campbell, thirty, was born listed here, too. Her mothers and fathers divorced when she was 8, she moved in with her grandparents and then her father died in a motorcycle incident. Points spiraled downhill, from an abusive connection to opiates and meth. Her two kids have been taken into point out custody. She expended time in jail, and without the need of a house.
And then, she said, she prayed to God.
“I received expecting through the time that I prayed,” she said. “He blessed me with another prospect of being a mom, and I did not want to mess this up.”
Now, she is sober. She goes to the doctor for prenatal care. She fulfilled Ms. Ramsey when she was in jail and read she supplied child materials. She said she experienced under no circumstances viewed as getting an abortion.
“I know that since God has blessed me with this boy or girl, he will established a path for me,” she said.
They pulled up to the church’s back door and went in.
