Thoughts about class structure in Wellington Wells?
Ooh! A challenge!
So the English love class distinctions and hierarchies and shit. They can hear each other's accents, make tons of socio-economic assumptions based on them, and decide exactly how much respect is owed.
Like most structures in Wellington Wells though, class structure is a crumbling facade built on a shifting foundation. It doesn't bode well for anyone looking for stability in their station, but it does also offer a lot of upward mobility for the more industrious in what would have been the lower classes.
Because we live in a capitalist world, we tend to think of class structure as being built on wealth and everything else follows from that. Money, however, has diminished value in Wellington Wells. If the butcher has no bacon to sell, it doesn't matter how many sovereigns you can offer him for it.
Tumblr media
So instead it becomes those things that would follow from one's money that determines one's place in the pyramid.
Location
At face value, class does seem to be divvied up by location. If you're able to get into The Parade, you must be in the upper crust. Only the richest, most important people can get a Letter of Transit and all the fanciest businesses are in there. William Godwin certainly argues that the emerald city is hoarding all the food like fat cats while the people in The Village are eating charcoal.
But I think the requirement of the Letter of Transit is more about social utility than class, although these things can go hand in hand.
Tumblr media
If you look at the businesses that inhabit the Parade, you'll find most of Wellington Wells' bureaucratic and civil service offices, several social organizations, as well as the bank, a law firm, and Turing Electric Security's corporate HQ. Basically all stuff that benefits from and relies on social stability. If you live or work in the Parade and thus have a standing Letter of Transit, it's not because you are wealthy necessarily. Arthur certainly wasn't rich if he was renting from Mrs. Hudson.
No, if you're allowed to come and go as you please (letter in hand, of course) it's because you've been determined to not be a threat to the status quo. It's like that Upton Sinclair quote. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it." The people in the Parade are especially motivated not to see any problems and to insist that everything is fine, even though they are much more likely to be exposed to the realities here. They are trusted to do this. Indeed, the Department of Archives, Printing, and Recycling and the Sanitation and Book Disposal offices require employees possessed of great strength for cognitive dissonance in order to protect the rest of the village who might not.
Being this sort of person certainly does help one along the path to upward mobility. Most of the best paying jobs are located in the Parade so getting in is the first step. But it's only one of many variables in the class status equation.
Home Ownership
Like most things in Wellington Wells, housing is in short supply. As more buildings fall into disrepair, more and more people are forced to shack up in the ones that remain which is why most homes in the Village are populated by seemingly unrelated people and many further are even sharing beds. This is only exacerbated by people being forced to abandon their family homes in the Garden District (and only gently eased by others having to return there after becoming Downers).
But there are those who own homes all to themselves. Sally Boyle notably has her own home (but is demonstrably broke when we play as her), Nick Lightbearer has a house to himself, Gemma Olsen and Dr. Faraday do as well, Dr. Verloc is said to have inherited his from his uncle. Victoria Byng has an actual fucking mansion to herself. Both Lawrence brothers owned homes and indeed the Colonel's daughters are quite antsy to inherit.
Inheriting is the only realistic way to obtain real estate in Wellington Wells anymore, as sales are likely few and far between unless you're speculatively investing in neighborhoods that are undergoing gentrification "beautification". As for everyone else, they're all waiting for Mrs. Chaney's house to hit the market and be sold for an obscene ransom, likely to be turned into another rental for six or more Wellies to share. Or if those six Wellies pool their funds and manage to beat out the other offers, they could form a co-op. Gotta be optimistic!
To that end, there are two notable examples of this and I think they are very different responses to housing scarcity with similar outcomes: Thomasina House and The Hippocratic Club.
Thomasina House is inhabited by Criers. Though not expressly stated in the game, many Criers are married to men serving in the Victory Memorial Camp and have been since the war. (Soliders have lines mentioning their wives and there was a cut quest where you could spy on a soldier's wife in the Village for him.) Soldiers do collect a reliable paycheck, so presumably most Criers are being supported that way. Otherwise (or in addition) some have jobs themselves (Mrs. Pankhurst's sewing shop, Madame Wanda's Reform Club). While I don't think any Criers are what we'd call rich, I don't think many of them are poor either. None of the Criers in Thomasina House speak of any work, so we can assume they're comfortably retired.
So it begs the question why a group of them would choose to live together if they could afford to live alone.
While living communally like this is cost effective, I would bet that for many of them, it's just the community and security of living with other women of their same age. When walking around Thomasina House, one does not hear of any arguments or difficulties living with one another. Additionally, once (if) one's children have moved out of the house, a home large enough to house them is now too much work to maintain. Maybe even you let the kids have the house to give them a leg up. Moving to the home for ladies of a certain age is basically the Wellington Wells version of boomers selling their McMansions, downsizing to a smaller and less expensive home, and living off the profit.
Contrast this to the Hippo Club, where Doctors live.
I think the Hippo Club is the opposite situation happening: men who would have expected to be able to secure homes for themselves with the money their education should have brought them cannot. It's not that they aren't well compensated; I'm sure Doctors still make a fine living. It's just that there are no homes for them to buy. The Doctors who live at the Hippo Club got in the game too late.
Imagine putting all that effort into your studies, expecting to make your mom proud, and yet here you are, in your 40's beyond, living with roommates who won't do their share of the chores and are constantly fucking with you.
It's no wonder Sam is fed up and Dr. Hughes won't even let anyone else on his floor.
The Hippo Club is essentially a frat house. I would suspect the house is actually owned by Wellington Health Institute so its inhabitants feel no pride in or ownership over it. They are notably immature. They pull pranks on each other, vandalize the premises, they've no discipline for keeping the place tidy, and they have interpersonal quarrels. That they do not get along suggests that some of them at least only live there because they have to.
And it makes sense that there's a sense of arrested development there. If society does not fulfill its end of the bargain and give them the means to advance in their lives, then they will happily - defiantly - stay at their current one!
There is one sure way to know where someone is on the class scale though: do they have a maid?
Victoria has a live-in maid. We never meet her, but she's enough of a fixture that the Constables expect her to make them a sandwich every day.
Nick also had a maid, although his probably cleaned other people's homes as well, if she can afford to quit.
Although there are outliers that should not be counted:
Tumblr media
Keeping Up with the Burne-Joneses
This one is tricky because as in real life, one can affect the look of wealth without actually being wealthy. Especially in a world where there isn't a lot you can buy to be conspicuous about it. Compliment machines, custom happy face masks, designer drugs. Coffee beans without quotation marks and butter to make a cake for an office party perhaps.
I'd say if you've got a unique outfit in the game, you're probably achieving this one. Victoria, Sally, and Nick all have outfits that where made only for them.
I think the most conspicuous consumption in the game has to be Sally's pregnancy dress.
This dovetails with another opinion I have, that Davey Hackney designed Wellington Wells' mod fashion not just around the idea of optimistic modernity, but also to use less fabric because - again - limited supply of material. The mod look requires even less than war time rationed 40's styles; it was merely the trick of convincing the people of the new aesthetic (in real life, the mod style was a backlash to the 50's New Look and its yards upon yards of fabric but because England lost the war here, there's never a New Look to rebel against).
That a girl can now buy a bright new dress in a simple cut made of no more than three yards of fabric keeps the economy moving and the morale high. Davey Hackney is doing his patriotic duty. There's a reason his atelier is in the Parade.
Tumblr media
But Sally's pregnancy dress flies in the face of that. So much so that I don't think this was trendy at all. It might even have never been available for anyone else to buy.
I like to think Sally pitched this to Davey in this way: yes, you're going to make a really weird - "outrageous" and kinda ugly if we're being honest - dress and no one in their right mind will want to buy it. But that's okay because it will cost so much that they wouldn't be able to afford it even if they were mad enough to want it. And Davey went for it because while he does love to make money, I'm sure, he also loves exclusivity. What is even the point of being rich and fabulous if the prole hovel is filled with lookalikes wearing Mrs. Pankhurst's admittedly good knock-offs? But this? Mrs. Pankhurst cannot afford to make this. And frankly, she wouldn't understand it at all. This? This is a statement!
But Sally is just the model here. Yes, she's got this one-of-a-kind dress made of an offensive amount of fabric in this context, but she probably didn't pay for it either. It's another favor. Sally is actually just the expression of Davey's conspicuous consumption!
Money, Power, Women
In America, first you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the women. At least in 80's Miami. In 60's Wellington Wells? Ehhhhh.
General Byng probably has some generational wealth going for him that he and Victoria are benefiting from. Seems unlikely Victoria could have secured a house that big unless her father bought it years ago. They clearly have money and they appear to have power.
But do they actually?
As we come to learn in Victoria's DLC, she's not really that powerful at all. She organizes social events and makes very important decisions and about very important things. She's in charge of a relatively important document management department, but that's still just middle management. You'd almost get the impression that she's been afforded a lot of latitude as General Byng's daughter and now everyone is just giving her "big" jobs to let her feel important.
General Byng, on the other hand, would seem to have actual power. The constabulary is under his thumb and even Dr. Verloc's Doctors are cautious about overstepping his bounds... except he readily admits that his powers are limited by the Executive Committee, who has cast him out to the Victory Memorial Camp.
But as we find out in Ollie's act, the Executive Committee aren't exactly a force to be reckoned with either. (And as far as class goes, we have no way to know but they look like Just Some Guys).
Tumblr media
Not a lot of places where the organizational chart is a fucking circle. And I would say only half of these people come from means. Johnny Bolton was probably compensated fairly for his service (gotta head off the M in MICE, after all), but apparently he needed a side hustle if he was running a bookstore too. Chief Constable Peters probably isn't diving into his Scrooge McDuck vault of sovereigns after a long day of patrolling the bridge. Nor is Penelope Snug, even if she's actually in charge of all infrastructure and not just motilene.
Haves and Have-Nots
There is only one real solid class distinction in Wellington Wells: Wellies and Wastrels.
Even here though, there's nuance. It's not so easy to say that the worst Wellie life is better than the best Wastrel life.
For one thing, I think there are some Wastrels who chose the life, rather than being forced into it. Ollie obviously did this, but I also think Eric Liddell chose the Garden District intentionally since running is forbidden in the Village. I also think Nigel Lawson's a good candidate for this narrative, someone who could return to the Village but chooses not to.
By contrast, the suicide party in Victoria's DLC had histoplasma mushrooms. Wherever would Wellies have gotten those unless they'd tried their luck in the Garden District before deciding to end it all?
The thing about Wastrels though is that usually in a class structure, you need people on the bottom in order to have someone for the upper classes to exploit and build their wealth on the backs of. Wastrels are not being exploited though; they've been abandoned, exiled. Downers serve no purpose in Village society and so they've been cast out entirely.
If there was a way to make money off Downers, aside from selling them Sunshine, I'm sure some enterprising individual would have thought of it.
Maybe it's just that money has a finite upper limit on how much happiness it can buy you when happiness is also a choice you're free to make on any street corner and there's little else for sale.

all of the hamilton children for @thereallvrb0y
this post is my personal FUCK YOU to alexander hamilton for having so many kids. fucking whore. not eliza though, she's a miracle.
also apparently these historical figures are too obscure for my regular secondary sources, so i had to use peoplepill.com for like all of these, besides like. two. also @yr-obedt-cicero 's posts have helped so much i cannot thank you enough bestie
okay here we go
Philip Sr.
Philip Hamilton (the First) was born January 22, 1782 in Albany, New York. He was sent to Trenton Boarding School at nine, and later joined Colombia College. He went on to study law. Robert Troup described Philip as "a sad rake and I have serious doubts whether he would ever be an honour to his family or his country," which is tough talk for a guy who was gay for his dad. Other than this, people described him as having a lot of potential.
Apparently, he was one of Hamilton's favorites, if not the favorite. As the eldest, he was responsible for carrying on the family name, and was therefore the most "valuable". Hamilton was heavily strict on him, possibly because Philip had rebellious tendencies, but he was nevertheless a good student. I also wanted to include these two letters, this one from Alexander to Philip and this one from their dad to both Philip and Alexander Jr.
In 1797, Philip became deathly ill, but was cured by David Hosack.
After the whole political clusterfuck that was the year 1800, George Eacker decided that Alexander Hamilton was a piece of shit, and he was right, but Philip got pissed and called him a bitch, basically. Eacker insulted Philip and his friend in return and Philip challenged him to a duel because men never learn. Philip was fatally wounded in the duel, an Lin-Manuel Miranda decided to take this personally.
Alexander was so distraught by Philip's death that he had to be held up by two men at his funeral. He became much more religious after his death, and it's really the only part of his life that I think he genuinely believed in god.
Philip was buried in Trinity Church Cemetery with his parents.
Angelica <3
@yr-obedt-cicero made an amazing post on Angelica, which goes much more in detail than I will, as to not be redundant. thank you again <333
Angelica was born on September 25, 1784 in New York City. She was described as sensitive, lively, and fond of music and dance.
She studied French and practiced the harpsichord, which she was gifted by her aunt, Angelica Church. Her and her father would sing together as she played the harpsichord. They were very close and ow.
After her older brother's death, she entered a very poor mental state, described as "eternal childhood" and she couldn't recognize family members (this symptom could have just been after Hamilton's death, but sources vary), also speaking of Philip as if he was still alive. Her family dedicated a lot of time to her health, but her condition worsened, and she spent the rest of her life under the care of Dr. MacDonald.
She died on February 6, 1857 at the age of 72. She was buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Tarrytown, New York.
Alexander Jr.
Alexander Jr. (who I am going to call AJ bc it's easier and I think it's cute) was born on May 16, 1786. He attended a boarding school in Trenton at 8, then joined Philip studying with William Frazer.
Like his brother, he later attended Columbia College, and graduated in 1804, several weeks after his father's fatal duel. Sources also vary on this, with the St. Andrew's Society of New York (which AJ belonged to) he "did not graduate on account of an accident" so idk. Either way, he started to study law not long after.
He was invited to be an apprentice attorney in Stephen Higginson's Boston law firm, then was admitted to practice law.
He sailed to Spain in 1811 or 1812. He joined the Duke of Wellington's forces fighting Napoleon in Portugal. He returned to America to serve in the War of 1812. He was commissioned as Captain of the 41st Regiment of Infantry in the United States Army in August 1813, though doesn't appear to have seen active service. He went on to serve as an aide-de-camp to General Morgan Lewis in 1812 until June 15, 1815.
He resumed his law practice after his military career ended, and married Eliza P. Knox in 1817. He took office in July 1818 as a member of the 42nd New York State legislature for a one-year term.
In May 1822, James Monroe appointed AJ as United States Attorney for East Florida. As someone who lives in the East Florida parishes, I'm shitting my pants, we never get mentioned in history besides that one time. In 1823, he was appointed to be one of the three Land Commissioners for East Florida, and received the military rank of Colonel.
AJ ran unsuccessfully against Richard K. Call to be the Florida Territory's delegate in the House of Representatives. He returned to New York where he became successful in real estate, and was one of the leading names in Wall Street.
In the mid-1830s, Alexander Hamilton Jr. represented Eliza Jumel against Aaron Burr during their divorce proceedings, which were finalized in 1836 on the day of Burr's death. *copy and paste joke here*
In 1833, AJ used funds from his mother's sale of The Grange to buy the townhouse on St. Mark's Place, where he lived between 1833 and 1842 with his wife, mother, sister and brother-in-law.
He um. Met Abraham Lincoln???? in 1835 when he was on a trip to the west. Lincoln was an Illinois legislator and was apparently just in a grocery story "lying upon the counter in midday telling stories." ... GET HIM OFF THE COUNTER???? GET HIM OUT THE GROCERY STORE???????
Anyway... After the death of his wife, AJ moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey then to New York City. He died on August 2, 1875 at 83 Clinton Place, in Greenwich Village.
James Alexander (my detested)
Bitchbaby was born on April 14, 1788 and graduated from Colombia in 1805. He studied law with Nathaniel Pendleton (and the doctor that he knew).
Shithead was admitted to the bar in 1809 and practiced in Saratoga and Hudson. He married Mary Morris on October 17, 1810. And yes that is Morris as in Gouverneur Morris. They had five children, three of whom died before their father.
Apparently, he lived in extreme poverty in the early years of his legal practice.
"I now look back upon this event as not only the happiness, but the most fortunate occurrence of my long and eventful life. My poverty, with its burdens and responsibilities, nerved me to exertion, and necessity taught me the value of economy and self-denial." -James Alexander in his Reminisces.
He served in the War of 1812 as a brigade-major and inspector of the New York Militia, and relocated to New York City by June 1815.
He built a home in 1828 called Nevis because he's unoriginal. He also kept a portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, which was originally painted for his father in 1798, in his home.
"The Hamilton mansion was famous in New-York society 40 years ago, and has been the scene of many a distinguished gathering" -New York Times obituary, 1878
Okay, now its time for his love affair (/nsrs) with Andrew Jackson.
Fuckhead joined Jackson's ~entourage~ in Nashville and traveled to New Orleans in December 1827. He served on Jackson's "Appointing Council" after the 1828 election. He agreed to serve as Acting Secretary of State until Martin Van Buren assumed the post (March 4-April 4, 1829). He helped Jackson draft his Inaugural Address.
Slimeball was nominated by Jackson on April 23, 1829 as District Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Jackson told Shitpants he had wanted him "to always be at my command" and when Smartfeller returned to Washington, "I want you to be near me." This was, in historical terms, sussy.
He served as a confidante to Jackson while serving in this position, working on national and international matters, which wasn't in the job description. His 1869 (ha) memoirs is mostly his correspondence, including the discussions of the National Bank (._.) and the Nullification Crisis of 1832 (basically South Carolina disagreed with the government again and did too much).
As Pisspants was leaving for New York, Jackson told him to "Make as much money as you can" and he did by continuing his private practice AND serving as District Attorney, in true Hamilton fashion. He and his younger brother Philip were both involved in the trial of Charles Gibbs. Hamilton left in 1834 to return to his private practice, and now we don't need to talk about Shitty Diaper Andrew Jackson anymore.
He uh. Won the first America's Cup (previously the Royal Yacht Squadron Cup) in 1851. So that's. fun. Queen Victoria also congratulated him on winning so. I guess the Hamilton's just know everyone.
James and AJ served as vestrymen of the Zion Protestant Episcopal Church from 1843 to 1853, and got a little plaque in 1953 and all the years end in 3's. Both were members of the Board of Directors of the Association for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations - the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1853 and that name gives me indigestion.
On March 6, 1862, James chaired and addressed a meeting at Cooper Union in favor of emancipation. And met fucking. Abraham. Lincoln. Lincoln also asked him to draft a proclamation, and when he returned, he had already issued the Emancipation Proclamation. So sux 2 suc.
James published his memoirs in 1868, which end in 1866, including his trips to Europe, the 1848 revolutions and the Civil War. He stated his intent to "do justice" to his father, and published several pamphlets defending him. (The Public Debt and the Public Credit of the United States and Martin Van Buren's Calumnies Repudiated: Hamilton's Conduct as Secretary of the Treasury Vindicated)
James Alexander died on September 24, 1878 at 90, and was buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarrytown, New York. His home was remodeled in 1889 by Stanford White. In 1934, it was donated to Columbia University where it now serves as one of the largest arboretums in the country.
JOHN CHURCH
Johnny C was born on August 22, 1792. He wrote a lot about his dad, and here’s one thing he wrote about the duel which literally stabs my heart out of my chest and rips it apart.
“I recall a single incident about it with full clearness... The day before the duel I was sitting in a room, when, at a slight noise, I turned around and saw my father in the doorway, standing silently there and looking at me with a most sweet and beautiful expression of countenance. It was full of tenderness, and without any of the business pre-occupation he sometimes had. ‘John,’ he said, when I had discovered him. ‘won’t you come and sleep with me to-night?’ His voice was frank as if he had been my brother instead of my father. That night I went to his bed, and in the morning very early he awakened me, and taking my hands in his palms all four hand extended, he said and told me to repeat the Lord’s Prayer. Seventy-five years have since passed over my head, and I have forgotten many things, but not that tender expression when he stood looking at me in the door nor the prayer we made together the morning before the duel. I do not so well recollect seeing him lie upon his deathbed, though I was there.”
In 1809, JC graduated from Colombia University and then studied law. He began serving in the army during the War of 1812, eventually becoming second lieutenant. He served as an aide-de-camp to Major General William Henry Harrison. However, he retired without seeing battle in June 1814.
According to his obituary, “He did not apply himself to the practice of law... having strong literary tastes, [Johnny C.] devoted himself to the study of history, with a view to writing his father’s life.”
Between 1834 and 1840, he went through his father’s letters and papers, and wrote a two-volume biography called The Life of Alexander Hamilton which was published in 1840-1841. Unfortunately, nearly all the copies were destroyed in a fire during the process of binding.
He edited his father’s collected writings under the authority of the Joint Library Committee of the United States Congress and took out the gay porn, publishing The Works of Alexander Hamilton: Containing his Correspondence, and His Political and Official Writings, Exclusive of the Federalist, Civil and Military in 1850-1851. He also wrote a seven volume biography, published between 1857 and 1869 called Life of Alexander Hamilton: A History of the Republic of the United States of America. This combined a biography of Hamilton and a history of the US “as traced in his writings and in those of his contemporaries”. He worked closely with his mother in the preservation of this history, and she encouraged him to write the comprehensive biography.
Also in 1869, he published an edition of The Federalist with historical notes and commentary, and I want it.
JC was a member of the Whig Party, later Republican, but never held office. He lost a run for Congress to represent part of NYC. Also, both Ulysses S. Grant and Chester A. Arthur asked him for his opinions on economics so that’s pretty rad.
In 1880, he presented a statue of Alexander Hamilton to the city “though preferring it were the act of others”. On November 22, 1880, at the unveiling in Central Park near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he said that after a century of the nation’s existence, time had shown “the utility of [AH’s] public services and the lessons of polity” and that he trusted “that this memorial may aid in their being recalled and usefully appreciated.”
Throughout his life, John Church married Maria Eliza van den Heuvel, and together they had FOURTEEN CHILDREN. so here’s a list of their kids that I didn’t write lol.
General Alexander Hamilton (1815–1907), a major general in the Civil War, author of Dramas and Poems (1887).
Maria Williamson Hamilton (1817-1822), who died young
Charlotte Augusta Hamilton (1819–1896)
John Cornelius Adrian Hamilton (1820–1879)
Schuyler Hamilton (1822–1903), who served in the Mexican War
James Hamilton (1824-1825), who died young
Maria Eliza Hamilton (1825–1887), who married Judge Charles A. Peabody (1814–1901)
Charles Apthorp Hamilton (July 23, 1826 – November 29, 1901), was educated in New York, England, and Germany. After clerking for a New York law firm, he practiced law in Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Civil War in 1861, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. A severe battle injury to both legs compelled his resignation in March 1863, and he returned to practicing law. In 1881, he was elected judge of the circuit court for Milwaukee.
Robert P. Hamilton (1828–1891)
Adelaide Hamilton (1830–1915)
Elizabeth Hamilton (1831–1884), who first married Henry Wager Halleck in 1855 and after his death, married George Washington Cullum in 1875.
William Gaston Hamilton (1832–1913), a consulting engineer of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company
Laurens Hamilton (1834 – July 6, 1858), an 1854 graduate of Columbia College, who died at the age of 23. He had served for one year as a private in the Seventh Regiment of New York, and drowned accidentally while serving as part of a military escort aboard a ship returning the remains of President James Monroe to Richmond, Virginia.
Alice Hamilton (September 11, 1838 – September 15, 1905)
Shout out to Laurens Hamilton for accidentally drowning, really taking after his grandfather.
John Church died on July 24, 1882 at 89 Stockton Cottage, on Ocean Avenue in Long Branch, New Jersey due to jaundice and catarrh. His funeral was held at Trinity Church.
William Stephen Hamilton
For the sake of my own entertainment, I will be calling this man Stinky bc he probably smells like my dad (shout out to my dad for having the worst genetics). So Stinky was born on August 4, 1797. He entered the United States Military Academy in 1814, then resigned in 1817.
He moved to Illinois, living in Sangamon, Springfield and Peoria, then in 1827, moved to the lead mining region around the Fever River.
He was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives from Sangamon County in 1824. He sponsored a bill that imposed a statewide tax intended to fund road repair and maintenance, proportional to property value, to be paid in labor or money. The bill passed, but was met with opposition, and was repealed in the next legislature.
Stinky served as an aide-de-camp to Governor Edward Coles, and worked for the General Land Office as Deputy Surveyor of Public Lands. He was also an incorporator of the original Illinois and Michigan Canal Company.
In 1827, he served during the Winnebago War in the Illinois Militia as a captain. He commanded the Galena Mounted Volunteers under the command of Henry Dodge.
After the Winnebago War, he moved to the Wisconsin Territory and established Hamilton’s Diggings, later Wiota in 1827. It was later turned into a fort during the Black Hawk War, entitled Fort Hamilton. Juliette Kinzie described the conditions in 1831 as “shabby” and “unpromising.” She also described the foul language used by the miners, the “roughest-looking set of men i ever beheld.” Theodore Rodolf contrasted the settlement’s rough exterior with small, finer details in 1834. He particularly liked the fact that Stinky had the writings of Voltaire at Hamilton’s Diggings.
Elizabeth Hamilton visited her son at Hamilton’s Diggings during the winter of 1837-38. During this time, Stinky also owned the Mineral Point Miner’s Free Press, before he sold it to a group from Galena, and it became the Galena Democrat.
Stinky volunteered in the militia again during the 1832 Black Hawk War. He was often in charge of the militia’s indigenous allies, including many Sioux and Menominee. He was sent to the Michigan Territory to recruit more indigenous allies, leaving successfully with several more parties.
In 1842 and 43, Stinky served as an elected member of the Wisconsin Territorial Assembly, from Iowa County. He lost an 1843 election for Wisconsin Territory delegate to the US Congress. In 1848, he lost another election for the Wisconsin Constitutional Convention. He was generally unable to achieve political fame.
Gold was discovered in California in 1848, and Stinky was there by 49. However, this would prove a disappointment and he later regretted the move. He told a friend he would “rather have been hung in the ‘Lead Mines’ than to have lived in this miserable hole.” This seems to be an accurate description of California.
Stinky never married and presented a rough, garish appearance. Which, good. Fuck beauty standards.
Stinky was ill with dysentery and “mountain fever”, which was likely cholera, for two weeks before he died from “malarial fever resulting in spinal exhaustion terminating in paralysis superinduced by great bodily and mental strain.” He died in Sacramento, California on October 9, 1850 at 53, and was buried in Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, in a section named Hamilton Square. RIP Stinky, the real MVP.
Eliza Holly!
Eliza was born on November 20, 1799. You can tell her apart from her mother because Eliza is her full name, and Elizabeth is her mother’s. She was a sick infant, and Alexander frequently worried about her. He was staying with the children without Elizabeth once, and he wrote, “Eliza pouts and plays, and displays more and more her ample stock of Caprice.” Eliza did not attend Hamilton’s funeral, but saw him with the rest of the kids on his deathbed.
She married Sidney Augustus Holly on July 19, 1825. He was a merchant from a prominent family in business and local government. They lived at The Grange (not James Alexander’s), and remained close with Elizabeth for her entire life, who described Eliza as being like her father.
“You don’t know how important you are to me. You step in the steps of your father’s kindness, and the more you are with me, the more I see that you are like him.” -Elizabeth Hamilton to Eliza Holly
She moved in with Elizabeth in East Village, Manhattan at 4 St. Mark’s Place along with AJ and his wife.
Her husband died on June 26, 1842 and moved in with her mother to 63 Prince Street in Lower Manhattan. This was previously the house of jAmES mONrOe and Samuel L. Gouverneur.  She and her mother also moved together to Washington D.C. where they lived near the White House on H street and entertained many guests. Eliza continued to care for her mother until her death in 1854.
Eliza potentially influenced or expedited the creation of John Church’s biography of their father, and chastised him for his overdue writing.
Eliza died in Washington D.C. on October 17, 1859, and was buried in Westchester County, New York, at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery with Angelica and later James Alexander.
Philip Hamilton (the Second) “Little Phil”
Little Phil was born in New York on June 1 or 2 in 1802. According to his son, Phil “manifested much of his father’s sweetness and happy disposition, and was always notably considerate of the feelings of others, and was punctilious to a fault in his obligations.” He was also almost six feet tall. Idk how.
Because of the poverty that afflicted his family after his father’s death, Phil “was denied those advantages accorded to his elder brothers, and had, in every sense, to make his own way.”
Phil practiced law in New York, and served as an assistant United States Attorney during the 1830s under James Alexander. He achieved notable success as a prosecutor in the case of pirate Charles Gibbs.
Phil moved to San Francisco during the Gold Rush in 1851 to practice law as a partner of his brother-in-law Robert Milligan McLane. He returned to New York after one or two years.
He assisted the Underground Railroad in helping enslaved people escape at least once by concealing them in his cellar until they could resume their travel to Canada.
At the end of the Civil War, Hamilton served as Judge Advocate of the naval Retiring Board at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and “led a quiet life” after 1865. He characterized his career as a “hard, up-hill professional life” working with a “very great” number of the poor and most of his time was “given up to unselfish acts”.
He married Rebecca McLane, who died on April 1, 1893, and they had two sons together, Louis McLane Hamilton (1844-1868) and Allan McLane Hamilton FRSE (1848-1919).
Louis served in the US Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in the 22nd New York Militia in June 1862, then the 3rd US Infantry as second lieutenant in September 1863. He served with the Army of the Potomac, and was brevetted twice fer gallantry, including the Battle of Gettysburg. In July 1866, he became a Captain in the 7th US Cavalry. On November 27, 1868, he was killed in the Battle of Washita River, being posthumously brevetted to the rank of Major.
Allan was a psychiatrist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His books included a biography of his grandfather, The Intimate Life of Alexander Hamilton.
Little Phil died “comparatively poor” on July 9, 1884 in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Rothschilds envolvidos na Independência do Brasil; Jacob Rothschild visto com Marina Abramovic (Macumbeira e “guia espiritual” de famosos de Hollywood); Drogas; Rituais Satânicos de Crowley (Sangue, Esperma e Leite)
1: The Rothschilds in Brazil
For almost two hundred years, Rothschild has been involved in the financial development of Brazil. The relationship dates back to the time of Nathan Mayer Rothschild, who issued a loan in 1825 to help Brazil secure its independence from Portugal. Further loans helped to develop railways and infrastructure and as agents to the government, Rothschild helped Brazil maintain its standing in financial markets. Nathan's London banking house, N M Rothschild, dealt in bullion and foreign exchange, and his remarkable successes in these fields earned him the contract from the British Government to supply Wellington's troops with gold coin in 1814 and 1815, leading up to the Battle of Waterloo. He issued 26 British and foreign government loans between 1818 and 1835 and in 1824 floated the Alliance Assurance Company. Nathan's involvement in Brazil can be traced to his connection by marriage to the firm of Samuel, Phillips & Co. (archive files XI/38/215A and XI/38/215B): Samuel Moses Samuel was married to Nathan's sister-in-law Esther (née Cohen).
2: Financing the new nation Nathan Rothschild in London, although otherwise cautious about South American investments, took an early interest in the new state. He was probably considering a loan to Brazil as early as 1823, but the first loan in 1824 was managed by a group of smaller contractors consisting of Baylett, Farquhar & Co., Alexander & Co. and Wilson, Shaw & Co. Nathan may well have discretely supported this group, because in 1825 he managed a second, larger, tranche of the loan, amounting to £2,000,000.  The loan was secured on customs revenues. When the South American speculative bubble burst at the end of the 1820s, Brazil managed to preserve a degree of solvency. This was in large part due to Nathan's financial innovation in raising a loan of £400,000 in 1829 specifically to service Brazil's existing debts. This bond is thought to be the first of its kind. 3: Railways The Rothschilds had been involved in the development of railways around the world and Brazil was no exception. As early as 1858 they issued their first loans to Brazilian railway companies, the Bahia and San Francisco Railway Company and the Don Pedro Segundo Railway Company, followed by the São Paulo (Brazilian) Railway Company in 1859. Further loans were issued to these companies over the years, and the Western of Minas Railroad was added to their number in 1893. The railways opened up Brazil's interior: immigrants poured in and coffee planting expanded enormously. […] 4: Henry Lynch (1878-1958) Henry Lynch was N M Rothschild and Son's representative in Brazil from 1919 until his retirement in 1957. Palin, an employee of the bank in London, describes Lynch in his memoirs Rothschild Relish  (1970): "This great character, a member of an old-established Anglo-Brazilian family, was a partner in an import and export business but more importantly for us he was the agent and representative in Brazil of NMR. He was a bachelor, tall, with a complexion which deepened during the years I knew him from pink to purple, fond of good living, and occupying a unique position in Rio, where he was sometimes said to be more the British Ambassador than the British Ambassador was. Knowing and known to everybody who was anybody in governmental, political, financial, commercial and social circles, he always seemed to me to be supremely well fitted for his job." Lynch became indispensable to the bank, and was dedicated to the promotion of British interests in Brazil. He sent the bank regular and detailed information and advice on commercial, political, and economic matters, and was a conduit to the very highest levels of Brazilian government. His correspondence files for the years 1919-1940 discuss inter alia proposed loans; loans being sought and issued elsewhere; and developments at the Banco do Brasil. 5: Coffee […] As a result the bank participated in the 1922 loan to Brazil intended to help finance the stock-piling of coffee. With a £9,000,000 loan secured on 3,000,000 sacks of coffee, the government had to protect this economically vital commodity. In 1924, as agents for the Brazilian government, Rothschilds sought out insurance for the coffee, gathering information about fire protection in the warehouses across the state of São Paulo.

Performance do olhar

A mesma morte? A mesma dor?

GLENN LOWRY: By the 1970s, performance art had achieved a level of notoriety and even acceptance. However, because many artists used their bodies aggressively in their performances, it was often perceived as masochistic and sensationalist. [...] MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ: I was standing there in the middle of the space,[with] this table with objects I put the objects on the table very carefully chosen, because the objects was for pleasure, and there was also the object for pain and objects that can bring you to death. GLENN LOWRY: Some of the objects included were a rose, a feather, grapes, honey, a whip, a scalpel, a gun and a bullet. MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ: In the beginning, the public was really very much playing with me. Later on it became more and more aggressive. It was six hours of real horror. They would cut my clothes. They will cut me with a knife, close to my neck, and drink my blood, and then put the plaster over the wound. They will, carry me around, half-naked, put me on the table, and stuck the knife between my legs into the wood. And, even somebody put the bullet in the pistol, and put in my hand and see if I were pressing it, her hand against my hand, if I would resist. But, I remember after six hours when the gallerist come and say this piece, it's finished that I start being by myself and start walking through the audience naked and with blood, and tears in my eyes, everybody run away, literally run out of the door. I remember coming to the hotel that evening, looking at myself in the mirror and seeing really big piece of white hair.

Jantares 'Spirit Cooking', Marina Abramović e a Elite Oculta
https://www.teoriamaxima.com.br/2023/06/jantares-spirit-cooking-marina.html?zx=764023c2f4d29330

https://href.li/?https://revistatrip.uol.com.br/tpm/marina-abramovic-e-sua-jornada-espiritual-pelo-brasil

The Diary of a Drug Fiend.

A Bíblia e as Drogas

Oracle of Delphi

The rest of this chapter (Acts 16.16-.40) is packed with interesting concepts and teachings, so we’re going to go slowly and try to gain as much understanding as possible from the text. We begin with Paul’s encountering a woman possessed by a spirit of divination. In the Greek this is literally the spirit of Python, which is not surprising when one considers the location of these events.
https://english.elpais.com/science-tech/2022-12-07/the-sacred-drugs-of-antiquity-fact-and-fiction.html
Carlos Wagner has written an exciting book that synthesizes the current body of knowledge about the role of psychoactive substances, and also presents insights from neuroscience on how they affect the mind and body. The use of vision-inducing substances in spiritual rituals officiated by priestly elites enabled them to maintain their own power and prestige through stories, rituals and images. The myths, visions, sorceries, oracles and trances that persisted over four millennia can and should be viewed in the light of mythical plants like ambrosia, soma and haoma, and real ones like hellebore, dogbane, cannabis and poppy.

rui grew up in an outer suburb of wellington with their parents. their father was very abusive and when they were nine he went to prison. after that rui and their mother moved in with an aunt that would go on to have a great influence on rui.
she was a big lover of antiques and restoration and taught rui how to restore things, and how to find true gems when thrift shopping. rui loved these activities and it gave their mother time to herself. rui learned a lot of handy skills, from upholstery, sewing and some wood working, as well as how to paint and developed an eye for interiors.
it was also during this time that they got into beauty, especially after reading vintage vogue issues their aunt had. their aunt and mother encouraged this interest and it lead to rui wanting to do beauty pageants, which they did at 12. they didn't win but did place highly and the fascination with beauty pageants began.
they would do pageants regularly, often placing highly, and their first win was at 16. unfortunately this win placed a lot of pressure on them and in the pursuit of another win developed an eating disorder. they took a hiatus from pageants for a while to recover. funnily enough, when they came back to pageants at 18, they won again, but were able to cope better.
after high school they went to university to pursue law, and it was during this time that they met their first love. rui was utterly enamoured and was sure they would last forever, especially when the two graduated. however, their partner's fear of intimacy and commitment reared it's ugly head and they broke things off abruptly, breaking rui's heart.
they worked in wellington for a while, then in sydney, before finally relocating to new york. they try to find time for pageants but work makes it hard. they still buy old things to restore them and remain in close contact with their aunt and mother.

March is #WomensHistoryMonth. This month we are featuring BIPOC transgender and gender non-conforming women from history.
✨ Carmen Rupe (10 October 1936 – 14 December 2011), was a transgender activist and drag performer from New Zealand.
✨In 1966 Carmen was arrested for wearing women's clothing. This led to a landmark ruling stated it was not illegal for people with legal documents that said they were male to be dressed in traditionally feminine clothing.
✨ Carmen ran for mayor of Wellington in 1977 and although she was unsuccessful, New Zealand's first transgender MP, Georgina Beyer, cites Carmen as being a leading role model for her.

⚖️ #WomensHistoryMonth Spotlight: Patsy Mink was no stranger to discrimination. Patsy ended up at The University of Chicago Law School in 1948––as one of two Asian students and one of two women––after repeated rejections from medical school due to being a woman. Two years after graduation, Patsy moved her family home to Hawaii, where she fought for the right to take the bar exam. Although she passed the bar, no firm would hire her due to her interracial marriage, so Patsy started her own practice, becoming the first Japanese-American woman to practice law in Hawaii. When Hawaii became a state in 1959, she began campaigning for a seat in Congress. When a second congressional seat was made available in Hawaii, she won, making her the first woman of color and first Asian-American woman to serve in Congress.
In Congress, Patsy advocated for gender and racial equality, affordable childcare, the environment, open government, and education equity, feeling the latter as the best route to equality and social justice. With this, Patsy became an author and sponsor of Title IX, and it's follow-up, the Women's Educational Equity Act. Title IX mandated academic and athletic equity, stating: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Patsy has several revolutionary but lesser-known legislative accomplishments, including sponsoring legislation to create bilingual education, student loans, and special education. And her stance on equity helped block the Supreme Court confirmation of G. Harrold Carswell––paving the way for Justice Harry Blackmun, who wrote the majority opinion on Roe v. Wade.
After Congress, Patsy held several elected positions in her local government, eventually returning to Congress for another twelve years as a solid liberal voice for the country. Patsy Mink's fight for education equity is still a fight today in the aftermath of Trump-era Title IX rollbacks and instating amendment protections for LGBTQ+, pregnant, and parenting students.

Weeks 1-3
Hello Mom, Dad, Jack, Angela, Jackson, Danny, Courtney, Maureen, Alex, Bennett, and Drew:
It has been 8 years since I studied abroad in London and boy has time flown! In some ways, 2014 feels a world away - President Obama was in office, Scotland held a referendum on its independence, "Happy" by Pharrell Williams was the song of the year, and "social distancing" was something we did when a random family member showed up to Thanksgiving.
Not only has the world changed since 2014, but our lives have changed. There have been new careers, homes, degrees, marriages, and of course, two of the cutest babies you've ever seen. For me personally, I graduated Amherst, moved to New York City, went to NYU Law, founded a bakery, passed the bar, started my job, and met a really nice guy in an all cash bar in Brooklyn.
And while, for all these reasons, 2014 feels a world away, a strange familiarity struck me as I joined the security line at JFK and looked down at my ticket. As I dug through old photos and found the one I was looking for, I laughed at just how much hadn't changed.

London 2022
Before we get into the good stuff, we have to address the elephant in the room. Duchess - where is the old blog? As it turns out, signing up for Tumblr with a college email you lost access to 6 years ago was a bad idea. Unfortunately, the customer service agent I explained the situation to was less than enthused by my story (and equally unswayed by my royal title). For a trip down memory lane though, click here:
A short 6 hours after taking off from JFK, I Ianded in London Heathrow and practically skipped onto the Piccadilly line. Neither my 23 pound suitcase nor 2 hours of sleep could bring me down; I was back! Jake had landed a few hours earlier and made his way to his new (ultra-trendy) office in King's Cross. I opted to work from the Tin Shed (my favorite coffee shop) until it was time to check into our flat in Notting Hill. When we finally met up, we were smiling ear to ear, thrilled to be back together and in London.
Tumblr media
New neighborhood
The next day, I ventured down to my office at 20 Fenchurch Street, affectionately known in London as the “Walkie Talkie building”. My firm set me up with quite the space, complete with free tea, snacks, and “sweeties”. They also filled me in on a sneaky back door entrance to the Sky Garden at the top of the building (think: Top of the Rock), which always had a queue outside!
Tumblr media
Cahill office at sunset
After our respective workdays, Jake and I explored London together and discovered some great pubs (Churchill Arms, Duke of Wellington, The Cow, The Castle, White Lion), restaurants (Mazi, Sushi Atelier, Pizza East, BiBo, Gloria) and all around cool hangouts (The Ned, The Pelican).

On one of my favorite post-work adventures, I snuck out of work a bit early to explore the Museum of Natural History and see the iconic townhouse from the Parent Trap.

"I have class and you don't!"
I then walked to my new favorite pub, The Grenadier, which is hidden in a mews off of Knightsbride High Street (a "mews" is a small street, yard, or cul-de-sac, often cobblestoned). I sipped a glass of rosé and read my book until Jake joined and grabbed his first and last gin and tonic of the trip. It was the perfect evening (except for the gin!).
Tumblr media

Our first Saturday in London was sunny and jam-packed. We grabbed breakfast in Notting Hill at JuiceBaby and ventured through Hyde Park to my old digs in South Kensington! My apartment in Courtfield Gardens brought back fond memories of my semester abroad, where I met some lifelong friends (hi Cailyn and Maria!).

2022
After a photoshoot in front of the door and street sign, Jake and I hopped on the Tube to Borough Market and grabbed gyros at Gourmet Goat (one of our best meals in London). We then ventured back west to grab pints at The Churchill Arms and The Windsor Castle (two great spots) and dinner at Dishoom, a highly recommended Indian place in London. We split the Okra fries, Chicken Tikka, Raita Yogurt, Mattar Paneer Ruby, Garlic Naan, and Chicken Biryani, savoring every last bite. Dishoom is rumored to be coming to New York and Jake and I will be the first in line when it does!
On Sunday, we met up with one of my college roommates Meghan and her girlfriend Wa for breakfast at Boys n Berry in Fulham. We visited her adorable new apartment nearby (also a Mews) and were thrilled to have overlapped in London.

After breakfast, we grabbed a double decker bus to Wimbledon and met up with the Parker family! I was thrilled to reunite with them and introduce Jake to Phil, Shelagh, Lulu, and Sam. After an all-too-excitable catch up in the entry of their house, Phil and Shelagh drove us to visit Hampton Court, a favorite palace of Henry VIII.
Tumblr media
Entrance to Hampton Court Palace
Not only is the palace breathtaking in its grandeur, but utterly fascinating to tour. We wandered through the Kitchens, Cumberland Art Gallery, Great Hall, Apartments, and Gardens (wow!), learning about the Tudor court, Henry VIII's reign, and the unfortunate fate of each of his six wives. Phil and Shelagh said they went to a music festival here, which would be worth a return trip!

As Shelagh explained, Henry was "quite pudgy" and it's not hard to understand why...

Henry VIII's version of PB&J on crackers
After Hampton Court, we returned to the Parker's house for dinner and drinks, trading stories of our travels (Phil and Shelagh had just been to Utah), lives (Lulu was finishing her masters and Sam had just released a hit song on Spotify), and the history between our families. At one point, I asked Phil about the first time he visited America and he explained that Poppy picked him up from JFK and drove him directly to a helicopter ride around NYC. The Coluccis proceeded to keep him up for 48 hours straight with trips to the diner, tours of Flushing, and a wedding (sounds about right). After hours and hours of laughter, it was time for Jake and I to venture back to London. We left their house full, in more ways than one.
Hampton Court Palace ended up being to perfect precursor to my night out to see Six the Musical, a modern retelling of the lives of Henry VIII's six wives. In true British fashion, Meghan and I grabbed pre-show pints and stood outside Theodore Bullfrog, a pub near the theater. We met up with Wa (who was venturing from her job in Richmond. Yes, THAT Richmond from Ted Lasso) and took in the show, which was fantastic! We grabbed a final final at a Heritage SoHo, which spelled like the Fondue restaurant in Mont Tremblant.
That week, Jake and I settled into our routine of working and meeting up after work to explore. On Saturday, we checked off an item of Jake's London bucket list - a Premier League football game. The process of getting tickets is quite complicated because there is no secondary market for them. But Jake managed to score amazing seats to the Fulham Bournemouth match on Saturday!
That morning, we woke up early and grabbed a quick breakfast in Notting Hill before venturing south-west to Fulham. We had a bit of a difficult time getting into a pub, as home pubs were members-only and away pubs required away tickets. After pleading with a bouncer that we were Americans with no real allegiance, we joined the buzz of fans in the King's Arms. A few pints, rosés, and orders of chips later, we walked through Fulham to the stadium. The stadium, known as Craven Cottage, is absolutely fantastic! It's the oldest stadium in London and filled to the brim with charm. I got quite the kick out of watching Jake go through the ticket entrance.
Tumblr media
Jake in the Turnstile
We took our seats for the match and quickly realized we were right next to the away section. The Bournemouth fans were LOUD, boisterously chanting, mocking the "library" of Craven Cottage with "shhh"s, and throwing a series of middle fingers and F-bombs our way. It was hilarious!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pitch
At half-time, the score was 2-1 Bournemouth and we joined the throws of other fans in the corridor of the stadium, which was right on the Thames. In the second half, Fulham drew a PK and tied the match up at 2-2. We had an absolute blast, singing “Come on Fulham!” all the way home!
Tumblr media
Jake and I on the Thames in Craven Cottage
On Sunday, we picked up Jake's new Barbour (an early 30th birthday gift) and made our way to the Treehouse Hotel, where Aunt Nancy was staying for work. We grabbed breakfast in their rooftop restaurant, catching up on our first few weeks in London and her incredible job. In true Kiley / Colucci fashion, we talked for so long that the staff politely asked us for the table back.

These first few weeks have been nothing short of fantastic and Jake and I feel so lucky to be here! Until my next post...
Cheers,
Maggie
