well all i can say about HBO's anti-union message in that bts video is that AS A KIWI ACTOR/STAGE/SCREEN INDUSTRY WORKER who isn't being strongarmed by a corporation into saying shit that they agree with
the hobbit laws suck. peter jackson is universally despised. what that man did with warner brothers and the national government to make our laws worse for workers so he could film his bad films here in the late 00s is akin to several crimes.
we WANT union protection! we WANT to be able to strike! i'm a member on the Equity NZ (union akin to SAG-AFTRA) committee for Wellington and the amount of work that's going on behind the scenes at the moment to claw back worker protections from our fucked up local laws is immense.
most of us aren't allowed to strike. most people working at wētā (the big screen production house), as well as on most screen/stage jobs are employed as contractors, so they're taxed exorbitantly, have no sick leave, have no holidays, have minimal protection from harassment or being taken advantage of.
long hours? being burned out? that's the kiwi way of living in the screen/stage industry and it SHOULD NOT be celebrated.
The Screen Industry Workers Act of 2022 has fixed some of that but there's still so much to go. yknow how SAG-AFTRA is fighting over residuals? here, we don't even know her.
i know all this personally and intimately.
i was taxed 39% on my contractor income last year.
only now that i'm a salaried worker can i afford to get my teeth fixed.
i had to get a legal action from a lawyer from ANOTHER UNION to get paid for one of my contracts in 2021 because the production team didn't like how i spoke up about their lax health and safety rules (this was a contract I was nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in the country for my work on, fyi)
sexual harassment is rife. what support is there? basically none. we hope it comes out in the media, or it doesn't change and there's nothing we can do cause we'll get sued into oblivion.
ive worked multiple 12+ hour days with only a tiny break in the middle or none at all. friends of mine have done 10-16 hour night shoots.
i've burned myself out multiple times in five years of professional practise cause that's the expected thing. that's what you do. if you're not working at 150% the entire time then you're a bad arts industry employee.
in conclusion, fuck off with your anti-union message, fuck you for utilising our weak-ass laws and HBO i'm in your walls
if you're in the US, support the Entertainment Community Fund! if you're a screen/stage worker in NZ, join Equity!

What makes a business illegal?
What makes a business illegal?
Avoiding Legal Trouble With a Business Attorney
Using the right legal processes is vital to any business. Without the right licensing and permitting, you may end up in a heap of trouble with local, state, and federal authorities. In some cases, businesses may be forced to shut down, face fines, or even be sued by disgruntled customers. The smart business owner takes the time to do their homework before opening the doors to the public. A business lawyer can help you avoid these pitfalls.
Common types of business fraud
A surprisingly large number of businesses actually break the law. The most common types of business fraud involve an individual taking an item off of the premises without permission, or a company using the stolen intellectual property for nefarious purposes. While the law may not be clear in all instances, there are a few laws that businesses can follow to keep themselves out of trouble.
Most illegal
The most obvious - and most illegal - the business of all is the sale of illegal goods. These types of businesses generally break one or more of the following laws. They may also be violating the country's labor laws, anti-monopolistic practices statutes, and transparency laws. If you operate a business in a foreign country, it is important to know what is legal and what is not.
Examples of illegal businesses
For instance, if you own a trucking company that does not have a license, you could end up with back taxes, fines, and a bad reputation. Another example of an illegal business is the use of shady accounting practices. In western countries, strict accounting practices are commonplace. In a recent case, Enron failed to follow a simple accounting rule that would have kept its balance sheet clean.
Laws vary in different nations
Some nations may also be in the legal business, as in the case of the sale of alcohol. While it is legal to sell alcohol in many places, others tax or regulate the sale of alcohol. In other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, the sale of alcohol is illegal. The legalization of marijuana is another example.
In the business world, bait and switch are the perfect examples of a well-intentioned scheme that results in a customer being wooed into buying a product that is unavailable. There are numerous other consumer fraud schemes.
Avoiding legal trouble
The best way to avoid legal trouble is to get the proper licenses and permits before you open the doors to the public. If you find yourself slapped with a bill for back taxes, fines, or a canceled check, you can always call on a business lawyer to help you recoup your losses. A business lawyer can also give you a low down on the latest laws and regulations affecting your business. Whether you are a small or large business, you need to be aware of the legal pitfalls that can sabotage your success. The more informed you are about your business, the easier it will be to succeed in a changing world. For small businesses, getting the right legal assistance is always the best way to ensure that your business is always on the right track.

I LOVE YOUR WORKS SO MUCH ITS INSANE RAHHH… where does one find your ‘a wolf in chase’ fic??
aww thank you! that's so kind of you to say!
I took Wolf in Chase and Pale Before the Fall down because for a time there was an iteration of them (very, very different I will say) being shopped to publishers but that is now on the back burner.
Please find the Woodford Series PDFs below (I also included the few on AO3 so you have a sense of the proper order of things):
Pale Before the Fall
Pairing: Napoleon/Wellington; Historical pairings (e.g., Wellesley/Kitty, past Napoleon/Josephine etc.) Rating: T to M(ish) Summary: After Waterloo, through a cunning lawyer and some finagling, Bonaparte manages to end up in England instead of St Helena for his final exile. Of course things don't stay quiet. There's an old murder. A stodgy Duke newly returned from France. A disintegrating marriage. And a couple of ghosts to top it all off. (and full of pretentious chapter titles and what not) Published: 2013-09-27
A Wolf in Chase
Pairing: Napoleon/Wellington; Historical pairings Rating: T to M(ish) Summary: Sequel to "Pale Before the Fall" though I don't think it's too much a necessity to have read the first one. A continuation of something like a friendship. If one may be so liberal as to call it that. Mostly, there are mysteries and a bored (former) emperor who has nothing better to do than drag a certain duke along on his adventures. Published: 2015-07-07
An argument for the wise use of blankets, or, Napoleon dislikes Canova's interpretation of him as Peacemaker (AO3)
Pairing: Napoleon/Wellington; Historical pairings Rating: G Summary: For an anon on tumblr who requested the following: I have only one Napollington suggestion and it is anything including Napoleon being ridiculously angry about Arthur having that naked Napoleon statue in his house. Published: 2019
Unsent Letters**
Pairing: Napoleon/Wellington; Historical pairings Rating: T(ish) Summary A child has gone missing out in the countryside. Wellington investigates. Napoleon is pissed that he's not invited along for the ride. It is a series of letters between them as shit gets weird. Published: 2018? I think?
**Note: Takes place ostensibly in the same universe as Pale and Wolf except that I also borrowed heavily from the rewrite that was being shopped around. So some characters who died in the OG are alive in this version. Treat it as an au of an au. I'll note that this is probably my favourite of the lot. Key differences: Georgiana Preston is alive, it's someone from her past who was murdered. Napoleon ended up half-dead on a river bank due to a fairy king trying to slice him open. Mary did some weird fucked up magic to heal him. Is he now like...weirdly sewn into the land? Maybe. Don't worry about it.
Wrack and Ruin (on AO3)
Pairing: Napoleon/Wellington; Historical pairings Rating: T(ish) Summary A letter from Joseph Bonaparte relating to the oft' cited and mysterious Jersey Devil brings Napoleon and an always less-than-amused Wellesley to New Jersey. Published: 2017
Usual disclaimer that these are quite old and absolutely not up to snuff compared to my current writing (I cannot emphasize this enough). But if you're interested, feel free to dive in.

the parallels between jake and addy’s childhoods are so so interesting to me. they were both molded by their parents at a young age to act a certain way and to have specific expectations in their lives.
ever since he was a child, jake heard about wellington avenue from his father, and how it was the "best of the best". he was raised with three homes, the perfect nuclear family, and the kind of popularity that comes from belonging to a rich, affluent family. and he was told by his father and society at large to expect that and more as he grew up.
as he got older and became more conventionally handsome, his father started to tell him what kind of girl he should look for: someone sweet, submissive, beautiful and willing to see his success as her own. she had to be the perfect accessory for his perfect life, one filled with the kind of accomplishments expected of the son of a rich, prominent lawyer.
as for addy, she was moulded into the perfect accessory of jake's dreams by her mother. the only time she showed addy affection was when she was prepping her for beauty pageants. as a little girl desperate for her mother's love and approval, addy turned herself into a beauty pageant and homecoming court kind of girl. and along with her mother's desire for the perfect daughter, addy saw the way her mother struggled with her relationships, and the way ashton was praised for marrying a handsome lawyer. the importance of the perfect appearance, and perfect family, was drilled into addy too. she was too young to be the wife of a lawyer, so she chose the next best thing: the son of a rich lawyer from a perfect family.
jake and addy could have followed down the paths set up for them, and jake was more than willing to do so (and even felt entitled to it), expect that addy had someone in her life who was able to see through the perfect family façade. both ashton and katherine riordan understood that the "perfect family" was detrimental, but katherine let scott continue to push his ideals onto jake after alex died. and ashton actively tried to convince addy that there was more to life than hanging onto jake's arm.
if katherine had done for jake what ash did for addy, then this story could have been very different.

And here we are! My Rusty Quill Gaming crochet blanket. It was made for the fanzine titled Look Out! Lots of Magnificent Gifts by The Ones Who Got Away ( @towga ). And I couldn't have done it without the incredible help of my friends @sugar-peanut-cat, who crocheted a significant portion of the squares, @mori-stuff who helped me find good quotes to use and made sure they were well and truly accurate to the source, and of course @apolloborealis who ignited my excitement for this blanket, helped me with choosing colours for the over 200 episodes, and last but not least made the center square with the highly impressive embroidery of the Rusty Quill Gaming logo. Thanks folks!!!

Late progress pics
Tumblr media
ID: a 20 squares wide and 23 squares long solid granny square crochet blanket based on Rusty Quill Gaming. Diagonals alternate between being multi coloured with quotes on the squares (representing all 218 main campaign episodes as well as the Ancient Rome sidequest, ordered from left to right, top to bottom), and being solidly white, grey or black (alternating by diagonal between those three). In the center is a four by four sized black square with the Rusty Quill Gaming logo embroidered on it. Blue veins run across the blanket, increasing in density near the bottom and especially the bottom right corner. There are noticably more quotes filled in near the top than near the bottom. End ID
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ID: two close ups of five by three squares. The first shows the top left corner of the blanket, the visible episode squares are:
1 - We start in the skies above London
2 - Bertie! Wellington!
3 - Go make more of yourself
11 - He's happy enough
12 - Keeeesh (which is an alternate spelling of quiche)
21 - If we die, it's on us
22 - Maybe he just forgot to breathe
23 - Does anyone speak morse?
The second shows the top right corner, with episode squares:
9 - I cast prestidigitation
10 - A friendly Other London hello
18 - I shall make a cringe roll
19 - You cannot give a skeleton scurvy
20 - I'm gonna make another cringe check
29 - Single Female Lawyer
30 - Sacrifice of the self. End ID
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ID: the first is a close up of episode 179, a lavender square with three overlapping quotes. Where the words of the quotes overlap, they are embroidered with both or all colours. The quotes are:
It's good to have you here. (In black)
Okay, good. (In pink)
Good to have you back. (In white)
The second shows three by three squares, with in the center episode 181, which is the same deep blue as the veins and reads: It's okay to hope. From it, blue veins spread in all directions. To the top left is a purple and pink square without a quote, episode 171. To the top right is 172 - See you on the other side. End ID
Tumblr media
ID: a four by four square consisting of black squares. On this the Rusty Quill Gaming logo is embroidered. A beige banner with the text Rusty hangs over a gear with the text Quill. Beneath it in a bright red semi attached font, with a fancy starting letter id the text Gaming. Behind the gear, to the left stands a grey microphone with red sound lines coming off it. A grey quill stands diagonally in the center back, with the tip resting within the G from Gaming, and the other end of the feather partially covering and ending above a red twenty sided die without numbers. End ID
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ID: image one is a three by three grid with a fair amount of blue veins. The quotes are:
168 - Alexander Jalexander Nalexander

187 - My turn.
Image two is a closeup of episode 50, a yellow square with an aqua outline reading: Sometimes you have to try. End ID
Tumblr media
ID: the three by three squares in the bottom right corner of the blanket. The blue veins are coming in dense from up and left, and converge on the edge of the final episode square and final blank square. The blue veins are not able to break this border. The final episode (218) reads: There's always hope. To the top right of this episode is 208, which reads: Almost lost ya. End ID

Mr. Bennett Addenbrooke occupied substantial offices in Wellington Street, Strand, and was out when we arrived; but he had only just gone "over the way to the court"; and five minutes sufficed to produce a brisk, fresh-colored, resolute-looking man, with a very confident, rather festive air, and black eyes that opened wide at the sight of Raffles. "Mr.—Glasspool?" exclaimed the lawyer. "My name," said Raffles, with dry effrontery. "Not up at Lord's, however!" said the other, slyly. "My dear sir, I have seen you take far too many wickets to make any mistake!"
LOL. The drawbacks of being famous while doing crime
On a side note - when you consider the time Bunny and Raffles are living in, it's not so strange that Raffles assumed he wouldn't be recognised despite being a well known cricket player. Media is so much more visual these days, photos and videos are everywhere, and it's all much more accessible too. Pop a name into any phone or computer and, if the name is not too common, it is very likely you will find at least one photo of them. But, while illustrations were of course used and photography was getting a bit more common, in the late victorian/early edwardian age the far majority of media back was still text based. An example: this was the front page of the Daily Mail on 23 June 1897:
Tumblr media
So. Much. Text. And you would need to visit a library or archive to find older editions of what was published, and even then, they would be sorted by date and publisher, not by subject. It's for these very reasons that Sherlock Holmes keeps his own newspaper cuttings archive. Raffles' name would likely be well known - but, except for those who had personally met him or were dedicated fans, not his face. It's damn hard to recognise a face from a description alone, after all.

HUGE ACE ATTORNEY ANALYSIS!!!
I know this probably means nothing but everyone can sense a familiarity of the sprites to their mentors etc. But I noticed a lot of the breakdown sprites actually look alike too, For example!!! Franziska, Miles and Manfred (Von karma), all share similiar breakdowns.
In Manfreds breakdown, both of their mentors, he begins to pound the desk, and also clutches at his chest, shaking violently. If we link this to franziska, her breakdown sprite in court is really similiar, she starts shaking too and even grasps onto herself, although outside of court she’ll burst into tears, and also hold herself. Miles, meanwhile, pounds the desk and his eyes look enraged. Sure the similarity isn’t too similar, BUT if we look at his outside of courtroom breakdown sprite he actually holds his elbow. Obviously we dont call them exactly breakdown sprites, only certain lawyers and witnesses have them etc. But to me these are the moments they break a little bit. So the real part of it all -
Franziska holds herself to comfort herself, even if it looks like she is clawing at herself, desperately. Like she might also be refusing the truth of whatever’s been said. As she also shakes her head while holding her arms. Manfred holds his chest by shock and anger. Meanwhile, miles “out of court breakdown sprite” is holding his elbow, feeling insecure and hidden. Not looking at the player.
Ignoring the three of them, there’s other types of breakdown sprites. For example !!
- Trying to harm themselves in their breakdown (Matt Engarde, Brushel and Richard Wellington)
- Laughing (Damon Gant, Kristoph, etc)
- Shaking
- Crying
These are the main ones anyway.
Another breakdown sprite i’d like to talk about is Athena’s, who’s we see often as she’s the only lawyer to possess one. (I believe, well other than Kristoph)
Her breakdown sprite is also her shaking, can be seen as a comfort type of thing where she’s known for trying to calm herself down but she ends up spiraling. We see it in dual destinies a lot, the perfect portrayal of a panic attack. She trembles and tries to cover her ears.

Do financial planners play a role in helping clients prepare wills?
Do financial planners play a role in helping clients prepare wills?
Considering the many benefits that an estate plan can provide, it is important to discuss the topic with a financial advisor. Not only will they be able to explain the basics of an estate plan, but they will also be able to help you make the most of your assets by recommending the right type of account and products to suit your needs. They will also be able to explain the tax benefits of different options, including retirement accounts and life insurance policies.
Care insurance policy
As a matter of fact, some clients will plan ahead with a Long-Term Care Insurance policy to ensure that their loved ones can continue to receive health care in the event of a disability. Others will wait until they are in need of care, but either way, the estate planning process is an important step. A financial planner can help you decide on the best type of account and make recommendations for changes to your existing accounts.
Working with an advisor
One of the benefits of working with an advisor is that he or she will be able to keep you informed of any changes in the law that could impact your plan. This is particularly important, as the law is constantly changing. An advisor can also make sure that your beneficiary designations are valid and up to date. This is important because changes can result in unwanted outcomes.
Estate plan
Another benefit of having an estate plan is that it can help reduce probate costs, which can be a hassle for a large estate. The process of preparing an estate plan involves a number of steps, including appointing a personal representative who will be in charge of the estate and filing the required taxes. This is usually done by an attorney.
Financial Advisor
Financial advisors are also able to recommend the best insurance products and make sure that your accounts are titled correctly. It is also a good idea to choose a financial advisor who is up to date on changes in the law, including tax law. This way, you will be able to benefit from the latest information on how to minimize your taxes.
Recommending other estate planning items
Financial advisors may also be able to recommend other estate planning items, such as a Medical Directive, which is a legal document that authorizes someone to make medical decisions on behalf of an incapacitated individual. This is a particularly important part of an estate plan, as an incapacitated person could not make decisions for themselves.
Finding the right advisor
When choosing an advisor, it is important to consider the quality of their services and their level of experience. Financial advisors who have been in business for longer periods of time tend to be better equipped to identify your financial needs and provide you with the advice you need to achieve your goals.
Benefits of having a financial advisor
The financial planning process is a highly complex process, but there are many benefits to having an advisor to help you plan for the future. This could include retirement planning, college funding, estate planning, and asset protection.

which culprits were executed?
disclaimer i know nothing about actual law and did no research for this post which i feel fits the spirit of the franchise so i will not apologize for it. also i did not include perjury charges because no one has ever been charged for that in these fucking games
ideas under the cut because spoilers or whatever and also there's so many of these bitches oh my fucking god
frank sahwit: no, i don't think so. he killed one person in a panic, and aside from that he was just a petty burglar. probably a decade or two in jail, but he's getting out eventually (plus, we did see him in the imprisoned turnabout, and he seemed to be doing just fine)
redd white: unfortunately, no. blackmailing most of la and killing mia is probably not an executionable offense :( i'd imagine life in prison, if not 50 years or so. depends on his lawyer, honestly
dee vasquez: i'd say no. yes, she blackmailed people and had mafia connections, but she killed hammer in self defense. a good few decades behind bars, and then she'll be back to producing movies with the same dramatics as always (someone is probably going to keep a closer eye on that, though)
yanni yogi: prooooobably not? he killed hammond, yeah, but was at least slightly coerced into it, and based on his confession in turnabout goodbyes, probably plead guilty this time! fairly certain he'll just get a life sentence
manfred von karma: hell yes. he killed a man in cold blood over what most people would consider an inconvenience, covered it up for fifteen years, assaulted maya and phoenix (which they probably pressed charges for), and probably forged evidence (he definitely got jeff master's confession under duress, at least, even if it was orchestrated by blaise). even beyond all that, though, we know he's dead by bridge to the turnabout (maybe earlier, i don't remember off the top of my head)
damon gant: yuuuup. he killed two people, forged loooooots of evidence, blackmailed the chief prosecutor, and did so all as the chief of police (except the first murder, i guess). he's gonna hang for that
richard wellington: nah. similar to sahwit, he was a petty criminal who killed someone in a panic to keep his other crimes a secret. he'll be out of prison in like 25 years
mimi miney: this one's tough, but i think no. did she kill thirteen people? yes, she did. however, the first twelve were because she was overworked and exhausted and made a mistake, while the last one was something she did out of desperation to keep her secret from getting out. she's probably got a good 20-30 years behind bars, but she'll get out eventually
acro: nope, nope, no way is he being executed. he intended to kill regina, sure, but definitely not russell. i'd imagine the rest of the circus vouched for him at his trial, too. on top of that, he's already disabled. probably got a solid 20 or so years in prison, but that's it
matt engarde: shockingly (maybe), no! he's an all-around godawful person, but kidnapping a girl and hiring an assassin (and then blackmailing said assassin) probably doesn't warrant the death penalty. i imagine he would've asked for life in prison, too, given the... situation he was in regarding de killer
dahlia hawthorne: canonically executed, which is a big plot point. don't think i need to elaborate here
luke atmey: no? he killed bullard because he was being blackmailed, blackmailed ron delite because he was being blackmailed, and then was also a phantom thief. don't think he's gonna die for any of that
furio tigre: i'm gonna say no. he killed glen elg, was a loan shark, had ties with the mob, and assaulted phoenix, but i imagine that just got him a hefty prison sentence
godot: absolutely not. he's canonically disabled and only killed misty to protect maya. if anyone's getting out of this with just a fine, it's him
kristoph gavin: empathetically yes. forging evidence, killing two people, attempting to kill a third... he's getting the noose, no questions asked
alita tiala: don't think so. she killed meraktis, but he did try to kill her first. also had ties to the mob, but the kitakis openly hate her now, so i don't think that matters as much. three decades in prison, tops
daryan crescend: HARD maybe. he killed letouse, blackmailed machi, and smuggled the cocoons, but he's also a celebrity and a police officer and was being kinda blackmailed about the cocoons. depends on his lawyer and how hard interpol pushes for his execution. i could see it going either way
ted tonate: no, but he probably is getting a life sentence for killing arme, assaulting apollo, and setting off a bomb in an occupied courtroom while a trial was in session
florent l'belle: i don't think so, no. he can only be charged with killing kyubi since perjury isn't a thing in ace attorney, so he's probably got 50 years to a life sentence, since he did kill the mayor of a village and also caused environmental damage with all the fucking perfume (he did get sued for that one, though).
aristotle means: gonna say no here. just because he accepted bribes and instilled his students with shit values doesn't mean any of that is necessarily a crime (the bribes thing might be but hell if i'm gonna check), so it's really just killing one person that he's being charged with. his sentence might be longer depending on klavier, though, since he was expressly close with constance courte and is well respected in the legal system (as well as an actual fucking celebrity)
the phantom: if simon blackquill was gonna hang for killing metis and stealing a psychological profile while pleading guilty, there's no fucking way this guy's escaping the noose
marlon rimes: canonically, no! that death was a full-on accident, and phoenix argued for him to receive help instead of conviction. he'll be fine
pees'lubn andistan'dhin: given that they were going to execute a nine-year-old for this crime, yeah he's gonna die
roger retinz: don't think so, no. troupe gramarye was fucked up, and he continued the trend, but i don't think he'll die for it. depends on who prosecutes his trial though, since he framed trucy for it and she is the little darling of the legal system (who is not very involved in the legal system)
geiru toneido: probably not. she killed taifu on purpose, sure, but over a misunderstanding. i'd imagine she'll be fine and out of jail in a few decades
paul atishon: god i wish, but no. being a politician an asshole isn't a crime, and i don't think archie buff's death is something he'll get the death penalty for
ga'ran sigatar khura'in: i have NO IDEA if she'll be executed or not. she's responsible for countless deaths (and lots of treason), yes, but she IS still royalty. i'd like to say yes, but that's not something i'm super confident in
pierce nichody: probably not, given that gloomsbury's death was an accident and he didn't succeed with killing ellen. depends on if the sprockets press charges, given that they're pretty rich and influential
jacques portsman: don't think so. i'm fairly certain that faith's murder and his involvement in the smuggling ring don't add up to the death penalty
cammy meele: nahhh. she's involved with the smuggling ring again, but she killed hicks in a panic. she'll probably be fine
lance amano/ernest amano: you have no idea how desperately i wish i could say these fuckers got the noose, but i unfortunately can't. organized crime + a fake kidnapping + involvement in the smuggling ring + a few deaths =/= execution
calisto yew: yeah i'd say so. she killed at least two people, was involved in the smuggling ring, was a member of a vigilante group, and attempted to shoot kay. lang and edgeworth are getting her in the noose if it kills them
quercus alba: yuuup. part of the smuggling ring, killed people, abused his diplomatic immunity, had a cross examination that lasted too long... he's gonna hang for that last offense alone /j
horace knightley: i would not think so, but i could be wrong! i think the biggest thing in regards to his execution would be if "di-jun huang" pushed for it, but roland killed him so it's a moot point anyways
patricia roland: yeah. everyone involved in the ss-5 plot is gonna hang, no questions asked
dane gustavia: i'm going to tentatively say yes? given that he caused the is-7 incident, which led to the dl-6 incident, which led to... many things, plus the fact that he fled the country for a while, he's probably gonna hang for that. could be wrong, though!
blaise debeste: dear god yes. not only did he kill jill crane, he was involved in ss-5, forged a shitload of evidence, has made many people "disappear" (they're probably all dead), and not to mention sebastian :( he's gonna hang and i'm gonna enjoy it
simon keyes: probably not? given that he's only directly responsible for one death and was a victim of circumstances, i imagine he'll get a life sentence, but nothing more

Letter from Napoleon to Madame Soult
Paris, 20 January 1810
I received your letter of 14 January. I am angry about the nasty rumours that some confused lawyers have spread about your husband. I have only ever had cause to praise the zeal he has shown for my service and the signs of attachment he has given me.
A very brief missive that, however, tells a long story. Because those “nasty rumours” concerned Soult’s alleged attempt at making himself king of Portugal. And apparently they had disconcerted Louise Soult in Paris so much that she decided to adress the emperor in person about them.
Her letter probably ran along the lines of “Hey! People are talking bullshit about my husband. Make them stop!”
Those rumours had been spread mostly by the entourage of Marshal Ney (yes, yes, those two again), who had sent Jomini to Schönbrunn in summer 1809 with the special mission of informing Napoleon of Soult’s alleged wrongdoing, but also by some of Soult’s own generals, whom the “circulaire Ricard” had made highly suspicious. When in early 1810 Argenton, the French officer who had secretly spied for Wellington and tried to deliver Soult’s army in Oporto to the Brits, was captured and trialed in Paris, his lawyers used those rumours in order to bolster his defense. (Argenton was judged guilty and shot anyway.) It’s these “confused lawyers” Napoleon talks about.
He’s also not being honest here. Because he had sent Soult a furious letter about the “roi Nicolas” affair from Schönbrunn at the time - while also putting Soult in command of several army corps (Ney’s among them, much to the latter’s fury) and soon making him Joseph’s new chief-of-staff. So, very mixed signals, to say the least.
But he clearly was not willing to discuss them with Madame Soult. Louise’s letter had at least forced Napoleon to give a sign of support for Soult, and as such, I guess it was not a bad move.

Lewis Sheridan Leary (March 17, 1835 – October 20, 1859), a harnessmaker from Oberlin, Ohio, joined John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, where he was killed.
His father was a free-born African-American harnessmaker. He was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His paternal grandparents were an Irishman, Jeremiah O’Leary, who fought in the American Revolution under General Nathanael Greene, and his wife of African, European, and Native American descent. His great-grandfather, Aaron Revels, fought in the revolution. Through Revels, he was a cousin to Hiram Rhodes Revels, the first African-American to serve in the Senate. His brother was a North Carolina politician and lawyer, John S. Leary.
In 1857, he moved to Oberlin. There he married Mary Patterson, an African-American graduate of Oberlin College. He became involved with abolitionists in Oberlin, which had an active community. He met John Brown in Cleveland.
In 1858, he participated in the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue, when fugitive slave John Price was forcibly taken from the custody of a US Marshal to prevent his being returned to slavery in the South. He was not among the 37 men (12 of them free African Americans) who were indicted and jailed for their actions. As a result of negotiations between state officials (who had arrested the US Marshal and his party) and federal officials, only Simon Bushnell and Charles Henry Langston were tried; both were convicted and served light sentences, in part because of Langston’s eloquent speech in their defense.
He may have been the first recruit from Oberlin to join Brown’s army. He left Mary and their six-month-old daughter Lois at home. Accompanied by John A. Copeland, he went to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, to join Brown. He died eight days after the attack from wounds suffered in the conflict at Harper’s Ferry. Copeland was captured, tried, and executed. After his death, the abolitionists James Redpath (editor for the New York Tribune) and Wendell Phillips helped raise money for Mary and Lois Leary’s support and the girl’s education. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

The Blue Castle, Chapter 19
Stirlings return! Not sure how to mark Uncle James here, but I'll call it -1 for the lawyer business (already took a point for him trying to use a medical professional to try controlling Valancy's behavior), and another for confronting Valancy here. Though him getting thrown out the window almost seems worth a positive point...
Ah, Dr. Stalling. I can definitely relate to the 'ask a question and it comes out the stupidest way possible' situation, but I find it interesting how Abel and Valancy had such opposite first experiences of meeting him. And I love how Abel handles him here.
Cousin Georgiana. Even though she's doing the same thing as Uncle James and Dr. Stalling (trying to talk Valancy into going back to her mother), Valancy's forbearance inclines me to be merciful. Also, I can believe that she's actually acting out of concern for Valancy's safety and well-being, not just about how her behavior reflects on the family. In fact, I'm going to give her a positive point for (presumably) giving Valancy the culinary advice that she requests.
Scoreboard update: No changes to order, but it's the first score change since chapter 15.
Mrs. Stirling: -40
Cousin Stickles: -14
Uncle Benjamin: -10
Aunt Wellington: -9
Uncle James: -8
Olive: -5
Uncle Wellington: -4
Byron Stirling: -2
Aunt Isabel: -2
Cousin Gladys: -2
Cousin Betty: -1
Aunt Mildred: -1
Aunt Alberta: 0
Uncle Herbert: 0
Second Cousin Sarah Taylor: 0
Second Cousin Jane: 0
Cousin Georgiana: 3

Seriously questioning the NZ general public for their vote to install National. Here’s some highlights of what our new government plans to do (how much they will actually manage who knows, but several of these are listed in their first 100 days plan):
Stop free prescriptions
Scrap Fair Pay Agreements, which allow unions to strike industry-wide deals that establish a “floor” in terms of pay and conditions
Stop benefits from being index to median household wages (except for superannuation) so; unemployment, jobseeker, and disability payments. People on job seeker payments are $50/week worse off while those on disability are worse off $60/week
Will allow landlords to once again evict tenants without cause, alongside scrapping a range of other regulations it argues have decreased rental supply and pushed up prices 🙄
Axe the $14.6 billion light rail project in Auckland (as they plan to spend a similar figure on seven highway projects instead)
Cancel the $7.4b “Let’s get Wellington Moving” project. Two of LGWM’s most significant projects included the introduction of light rail in Wellington from the city centre to the south coast and the “pedestrianisation” of the Golden Mile precinct. National want to instead… build another traffic tunnel….
Eliminate the Māori Health Authority, Te Aka Whai Ora.
Scrap Health Star Rating for food.
Repeal Labour’s Resource Management Act reforms, and introduce a fast-track consenting regime…. Because making rash decisions around resource consents sounds like a solid idea 🙄
Get rid of The Clean Car Scheme, which subsidises part of the purchase of electric vehicles and hybrids.
Remove the Medium-Density Residential Standards (the 3x3 “sausage flat” law) that are designed to prevent urban sprawl….
Axe taxpayer funding for Section 27 cultural reports that are used in sentencing. Section 27 of the Sentencing Act 2002 provides an avenue for lawyers and defendants to explain personal circumstances that can influence a just sentence outcome, such as social failures faced by the defendant or any support available to them.
End funding for Labour’s “Community Connect” programme, meaning many of the public transport discounts that currently exist will be axed.
There’s more but I am just about done. WTF NZ 😭
